Tuk Tuk Drivers’ Sexual Harassment Gives Women & Tourism A Rising Headache

Several women who have recently fallen victim to sexual abuse especially at the hands of sexually frustrated male tuk tuk drivers, have taken to social media to vent their frustrations, as the epidemic continues to grow uncontrollably on the streets of Sri Lanka.

Both foreigners and local women have fearlessly stepped forward to share their sickening experiences some with startling video evidence.

A Policeman when contacted by Colombo Telegraph and who spoke on condition of anonymity said “yes, I do agree that this epidemic is on the rise. Unfortunately the Police force does not have enough manpower to tackle this type of crime. The number of registered three wheelers on the roads of Sri Lanka is now well over a million vehicles.”

This rampant curse that women in Sri Lanka are forced to endure needs to be curbed immediately, as it is fast affecting even the tourism industry in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is fast getting widespread criticism globally firstly for the harassment women continuously face on the streets of Sri Lanka and moreover where the local government law enforcing officers go on to deal with such complaints in a lackadaisical manner.

A land like no other, the miracle of Asia or whatever fancy name Sri Lanka wishes to call itself, it will certainly have to curb this menace soon before the tourism sector is severely affected.

Meanwhile two ladies who were subject to harassment by three wheel drivers recently had the courage to film the two perverts in action and in doing so created huge public awareness and a plethora of social media responses in Sri Lanka.

One woman wrote that she was made to feel extremely embarrassed when the three wheel driver was masturbating during the journey she took on her way to drop off her three year old in school.

In the second instance the lady whilst travelling in her own private vehicle was taunted by a three wheeler driver who continued to make gestures driving alongside her vehicle. The tuk tuk driver whilst pointing to his genitals with one hand was using his other hand to maneuver his tuk tuk through the winding traffic.

Writing to a group on Facebook known as EPFS Community Vraie Cally said “I had to take my daughter to nursery today and hailed a Trishaw on the street. It didn’t take me long to realize this man kept touching his penis (over his clothes). At first I wasn’t sure. But once he started doing it with more frequency, I realized that he was masturbating.

I assertively asked him which stand he was from. He said ‘Saranankara’.

I was thinking of all the things I could do, but also couldn’t work out how to do any of those things with three year old with me.

So I took out my phone and held it high enough for him to realize we were talking pictures. The second I did this he stopped. But we were only a few seconds away from the nursery. When I got off the Trishaw I could clearly see he had an erection.

I paid him Rs130 for the hire and got off at the nursery. I didn’t want to fight with him outside the school. I stayed there for a few minutes before taking another to come back home.

Those 10 minutes in a Trishaw felt like an eternity.

I came home and realized that I couldn’t let him to get away with what he did. I made a complaint at the Women’s desk at the Dehiwala police station and was thankful for how empathetic they were given how upset I was. I cried for a good 2 minutes before I could even speak to the officer.

For all the strength I have, it’s sometimes very hard to work out what to do in response to situations like this. Especially with traveling with a young child.

I am glad that I did take pictures of the vehicle number plate. This will help locate him.

I am not sharing this sympathy. I’m okay now.

But I was reminded today of how terrifying it is to be a woman in Sri Lanka. How vulnerable we are in situations like this.

And why we need to bring people like this to justice. I don’t want anyone else to have to go through the same.

Writing on another Facebook group known as ‘Voice of Change’ a lady named Anoka Abeyrathne wrote, “This happened in broad daylight on Galle Road, Bambalaptiya. While I was waiting for the lights to change, this trishaw driver tooted at me. When I didn’t look, the tooting became even more incessant. Once the lights changed, he drove alongside me and made a gesture asking for my phone number while pointing at his genitals. I ignored and tried to drive away, but he kept following me. I began videoing him and then he tried to crash into me, run me off the road and made crude explicit gestures. Fearing for my safety, I drove towards the Bambalapitiya Police Station. He probably realized that and turned off into a side road and disappeared.

I had just finished a meeting with another meeting planned. This whole experience left me speechless. I called my friends who showed up and helped me sort it out.

This is not ok. Sri Lanka really needs to streamline and improve law enforcement and the legal system. The fact that this guy did not care that it was not broad daylight on Galle Road, nor that I was videoing him, shows his regard for both women and law.”

Meanwhile in Mirissa the tourist city down on the southern coastline is soon becoming notorious for the abuse of foreign women at the hands of local tuk tuk drivers.

Besides fleecing tourists through exorbitant trip fares female tourists have been subjected to severe sexual abuse at the hands of them.

Recently on the 8th of March 2019 a tourists named Karen Hsin was abused when her vaginal area was groped when entering a way side eatery. This is despite being in the presence of a male tourist she was accompanying.

Karen Hsin went on to post on Facebook “My assaulter hid inside the passenger seat of a tuk tuk but my friend went inside the tuk tuk to prevent him from driving away. We had to cause a scene in order to get the attention of two traffic officers. They stopped by to see what all the commotion was about, and even then, the traffic officers didn’t voluntarily call the actual police for me.. This was my first experience with the sexist and dysfunctional Sri Lankan justice system. The man who assaulted me might never be indicted because I’m only in the country until middle of March. But I did everything in my power to report him. I chose not to be silent. I’m sharing this story because I need to let those men know I’m not afraid of them. I also want to bring light to the unfair, dysfunctional and sexist Sri Lankan police officers I dealt with; and hopefully to get some closure myself.”

Earlier Sri Lanka as a country drew huge criticism when On Christmas Day 2011, a Russian female named Victoria Alexandrovna was gang raped whilst her boyfriend Khuram Shaikh Zaman a Briton was murdered.

In another incident in October 1999, an Indian woman named Rita Manoharan was also gang raped and murdered along the beach at Crows Island, a suburb of Colombo.

Meanwhile the Cultural Intelligence Center USA who spent over a decade studying behavioural patterns of over 100,000 people globally identified that people segregated into ten global clusters where behaviors’ of people living in those respective regions are driven by values inculcated during their formative years.

The cluster that Sri Lanka falls within is identified as a region where a hierarchical system plays a major role in the day to day lives of its people.

An expert on this subject when contacted by Colombo Telegraph said “this is why women get harassed, taunted, bullied and abused in these regions more so than other global clusters. It has become the norm. The system needs to change and that is why it is important that Law and Order should play a major part to apprehend perpetrators, name and shame them in public and jail them if necessary. However this is a huge problem that needs to be driven into a system that would take perhaps years to materialize. Sri Lanka badly needs a culture change where gender equality plays a huge role and where women need to be revered for the role they play as a mother, wife, sister, friend and a co-worker.” (By Janaka Ranaweera)

For this perverted Yakko culture to change the political culture must change. When you have frustrated, sex starved, vulgar, politicians in power who represent the uncivilized type then this kind of life goes on.
The law does not take these acts seriously because the law itself is in league and does the same things.
One can go on and on about Sri Lankan culture and it will not change anything.

The best thing i can suggest to all would be tourists to Sri Lanka is please stay away from the God forsaken country. There are better countries in Asia to visit with a much better culture in many aspects such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia etc.
Visit the above and you can see the wide gap that separates Lanka from the rest.

Once seen and experienced is to never forget.

” Stay away from Sri Lanka a land of much regret. “

Oh yeah, stay away until bloody UNP led Good Governance Government is gone.
This vulgar culture is a production of the UNP government.
Before they came into power, Sri Lankan society was never in this position as there was law and order in the country.
Maithri and Ranil led Good Governance government which came into power in 2015, openly promoted hard drugs, designer drugs, alcohol, teen sex, public obscenity, sexual abuse, pornography and male and female prostitution, which are banned by Sri Lankan law.
Once this government is gone forever, Sri Lanka will come back to its NORMAL STATE in 2020.

Oh what a stupid statement blaming the sadistic sexual pleasures of the males of the species on this government! This Champa lady has forgotten that the drug epidemic was introduced during the previous Rajapaksha regime. She has forgotten how former Prez Rajapaksha flew in his helicopter to prevent the drug kingpin Lansa being taken in by the Narcotics cops. She was suffering from Amnesia when the Russian female was gang raped by a PS member, an ardent supporter of Namal and the Rajapaksha clan. If we get them again, druggies will thrive and there will be no end to sexual masochism exhibited by their supporters.

Of course, it is the government’s fault. Public obscenity was not allowed in Sri Lanka before “Good Governance Government” came into power. This government completely ruined country’s culture.
Check police records before uttering rubbish. Drug menace was introduced by UNP’s Free Trade Policy in 1997.
According to the records of the University Psychiatry Unit of the General Hospital at Colombo, in 1982, for the very first time, 2 Sri Lankans were admitted to hospital for heroine addiction and in 1983, the number has gone up to 92.
No government took any tangible measures to curb heroin as our leaders were busy in combating terrorism. Then drug smuggling became LTTE’s No. 1 income.
All your examples are isolated cases. Give me one example of this nature expressed in this article.

            Champa ,
It was Chandrika who was in power in 1997 . The gang raped Russian
woman in Hambantota district took place in 2011 . The sexual
harassment of women in public transport and on streets have no
recorded history . This article about the plight of women in Srilanka
only need to be an eye opener and not blinding ones own eyes with
anything one’s hands can get into ! It’s in the culture of getting used
to taking certain issues as a way of life and some people are even
proud of this epidemic . I remember Fouzi as the minister of transport
once introduced a women only bus in Colombo and the service was
discontinued as women didn’t support the service . The truth is some ,
not all , women enjoy the fun of being groped never minding in private
or public ! Today , more and more women are cheating on their
husbands and boy friends for sexual and financial reasons . And the
same thing is true on men . It’s all only on the print to hate it but deep
inside , if there’s an opportunity they go for it . Men preying women
who are taking children to school is one common occurrence and
nurseries are one such hot spot for sexual perverts and weak women
fall prey . Too many husbands and wives who are abroad without their
partners for employment is another trigger for this widespread menace.
And there are too many ingredients in this soup , so Champa , take
caution before readying your stone throwing ! Things have come to light
largely because of the play has escalated into female tourists and it is
happening at an alarming level that they even got murdered . I remember
we had a culture of lowering our eyes when we see a young woman with
her husband on the road and now that’s no more !

Ok, I see a typo here, it should be read as 1977, not 1997.
(I have a bad habit for not reading twice before posting comments.)
However, as everybody knows, and you don’t know, UNP introduced Free Trade Policy in 1977.

It could be a mistake but It’s not a typo definitely . Typo on this one
would have looked different . We can forget that , it happens .
Anyway , thank you for reminding that a party called UNP exists and
it is that party that brought in economic reforms . You are a Genius !
Hope you will be publishing more interesting ones that attracts many
here on the forum , like this one and get many thumbs up as on this
              one !

                whywhy
It is not a mistake, it is a typo as I clearly said the drug menace was introduced by UNP’s Free Trade Policy, before adding which year.
It is general knowledge for anyone that free trade policy was introduced to the country by UNP in 1977.
It was you who made the mistake by thinking that Chandrika was JRJ who introduced destructive free trade policy to Sri Lanka.
As clearly mentioned several times, I don’t write for thumb ups.
If I want thumb ups it is so easy as I just have to write in support of terrorists and UNP and also against Sinhalese Buddhists and Maha Sangha. If I do that, I will get lot of thumb ups.
I pity you for thinking that introducing drug menace to Sri Lanka is an economic reform.
About UNP, how could anybody forget the destruction they brought to Sri Lanka and the treachery they committed against the country.
Another reminder about UNP, they are the current ruling party, so they exist.

                  Champa ,

Burt has saved my time . This is not about politics . The issue is
with the culture .I just don’t want to be dragged into endless
prattle often missing the point . It is not difficult to see that our
country at different ages had been in the habit of being addicted
to psychoactive drugs like ABIN and GANJA illegally , Ganja is
still in cultivation illegally and is being caught on a regular basis
somewhere in the country . Tuk Tuk incidents are only a few of
a massive sexual harassment of women in all walks of life in the
country . And all culprits are not drug addicts . It goes from school
children to Temples , wherever women hang around . Festivals ,
shopping malls , markets , you name it , it’s there ! The issue here
is , it is out of control and we let it go international ! Finding a
solution is what is needed and not trying to find excuses by
passing the ball to someone else’s court while such a court does
not exist . Controlling the menace is the need of the hour . I am
in a position to defend the country by pointing the finger at many
other countries that I have visited but would that justify the
culture that has taken root in our country ? I have seen it in many
countries but not at this scale and not at the cost of women’s
                  dignity or men’s dignity !

Blame the judges who bent the law. Without their help and direct participation, politicians cannot intervene in the law.
There are rotten eggs in the judiciary then as well as now who are not hesitant to twist some cases to appease politicians in order for quick promotions or future gains.
It is the duty of the Chief Justice to discipline his judges by rotating them frequently.

I live on the same planet you live.
Were their any complaints of this nature at the time?
Or, have you seen tuk tuk drivers behaving like this?
The reason is, when there was a strong political leadership in the country, people were scared to break the law.
The same people who were disciplined then, now follow bad leaders, who bend and alter moral standards.
Under the current President and the Prime Minister, Sri Lanka has failed spectacularly.
The toxic leadership in Sri Lanka is busy in selling the country to foreigners with overt and covert deals, while the society has become stateless. Allocating 60% of our lucrative shipping industry to foreigners is the latest, on top of calling for bidders for building the profitable Eastern Terminal of the Colombo Harbour, for which China, India and EU competing with each other.
Colonialism and capitalism have taken center stage as a means to earn commissions for ruling politicians.
When the Indian-trained-LTTE terrorists plunged the country into a 3-decade-long terror era, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa saved the country from ruthless terrorists within a short span of 3 years.
28,708 + 40,107 servicemen didn’t willingly sacrifice their lives + limbs, eyesight and hearing to see our country losing to foreigners or anarchism taking over our society.
This hybrid toxic leadership will definitely be changed by people at the first available election.
However, that doesn’t mean that people will replace them with Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as an alternative for Mahinda.
Mahinda Rajapaksa is a living legend. Gotabhaya or Basil can’t hold a candle to him.
It is time for Sri Lanka to go for a new leadership and take a new direction that has not been tried before, in order to restore our refined Sinhalese Buddhist society and develop the country based on the same pillars of sophisticated ancient Sinhalese civilization.

White is white and Black is Black as long as one doesn’t add another
colour to each of them . Only a neutral mind can understand the
various confounding conditions that lead to this kind of behaviour
and this is in the culture because it’s a widespread epidemic
engulfing all walks of life . Rulers must act to stop this menace but
attributing the menace to politics and singling out one party won’t
help take anyone anywhere near a treatment . There’s a good news
that the man who made these sexual advances is reported to have
been arrested . So , people and most importantly the victims must
react against anything that violates their dignity , respect and
honour . Perpetrators must be named and shamed . The police have
been freed to act . That’s an achievement although it’s not one
hundred percent up to the mark.

You are right about the “frustrated, sex starved, vulgar, politicians in power”.

Not long ago, a Minister was reported to have fallen down from the floor of the hotel he was staying in Australia and was seriously injured. How did that happen? You would have thought that he was drunk after a few shots of free liquor paid for by the Tax Payer. No. The guy was trying to get into the adjoining room where a female was staying through the Balcony behind the room and misjudged the space between his balcony and the Balcony next door and crashed down. Didn’t he fully deserve what he got? But, he was still lucky because his hospital bill was Fully paid by the poor Tax Payer, through the President Fund

    CT,

in this land of 2,500 year-Old civilization, did the tak tak drivers learn from the politicians, as the politicians had no regard for the law, constitution, honestly evamplified by the President, Ministers and MPs, who had their own kicks indoors, while these drivers could not afford it, had to have their kicks while working at the women’s expense.

The good news is that the tak tak drivers do not seem to care about men.

Thank you CT for highlighting this latest curse (after the crooked politicians and drugs) to Sri Lankan society.

The cops would certainly like to take the easy way out by claiming they are understaffed but simple logic tells us that they haven’t done even the basics in handling such criminal activity like giving the public a hotline to call on and report such matters ! Not every tuk driver is a pervert so who is asking for a cop each to monitor a million tuks ? Come on. Instead the cops have said they cannot press charges. What crap it this ? Weird cops

A former Chief Justice was caught with a married woman lawyer inside a car in a compromising position somewhere near the parliament a few years ago. If people in such a high position behave like that, what can you expect from tuk-tuk drivers? Everything is rotten here from the top down.

So you want our rapists Tuk Tuk or otherwise to break the world record.
What a pathetic self you are.

What is the purpose of putting things in perspective.
Are you going to tell the victims that they should bear with the rapists because the country has not yet reached the rape threshold of the American, Brits, …………. have set in the real world? Therefore you want to encourage more rapes enabling this island to reach parity with other countries.

If women are being raped in other country it is their problem. It does not mean we have to tolerate rape, murder, crimes, war crimes, ………………………. in this island until it reaches parity with other countries..
What a stupid heartless brainless person you are.
Go blame LTTE, Diaspora, GG Ponna, Sambandan, International Community, the West, UNHRC, UN, …………………… for crimes committed in this island especially the ones against women and children.

        Veddah,

‘What is the purpose of putting things in perspective’

You utter moron Veddah did I say anything about encouraging rape? Read my last sentence you imbecile.

Here is something to help you

Verb. put something into perspective. (idiomatic) To compare something with a similar thing to give a clearer, more accurate idea. You can put your worries into perspective when you realise how many people in the world are so much worse off than you

Consider the sexual crimes in SL taking into account the size of the population. You will find that a far greater number of such crimes are committed elsewhere.

          You heartless moron.
Ask any woman if she wants to put herself through sexual harassment, rape, ….. and other ordeal just to put things in perspective, you will know the answer. They don’t give a damn about what is happening outside this island. They want safety, security, dignity ………… intact and from your own people first.

Are you willing to subject yourself to a session of rape and sexual harassment so that others can study, compare, and put some perspective you stupid heartless moron.

We do not have to learn/know how bad rapists elsewhere are or how frequently women are being raped, its none of our business, our focus should be how best to reduce rape, sexual harassment, and stop it eventually.

Are you going to announce to the world of rapists in this island that they have not quite completed their quota for the third quarter of this year and they should catch up with their task, which was calculated on the incidence/occurrences of rapes outside this country.

Women are not interested on your perspective and shove it wherever you see fit.

Tell us did he ever work for the people he claimed to have fought for?

In most three wheelers the side view mirrors are focused at the passenger seat , allowing the driver a clear look at the passenger and not at the road . They are a law unto themselves, and an absolute disgrace. The politicians however, could not care two hoots about the uncontrolled menace they have unleashed on the public .

  • 12

There is no point in blaming the politicians who has no idea what is going on in an ordinary citizen’s daily life, of course. We have to blame the police who do not take necessary steps to stop these nonsense. Despite these idiots never follow road rules, tries to blame the other drivers. Even bus drivers whether it is private or the SLTB are the same. I have decided to get down my vehicle and give them a punch regardless which community he belongs to. In fact I have done that once and thanks to the police and my aids who understood the situation and took my side. what else to do when the authorities do not do their duty? These cheap tuk-tukers have to be taught a lesson. Most of the time, these tuk-tukers show their arrogance when I travel with my family so they come to know which community I belong to and try to take advantage. But from my part, I need to show them who I am, not care about whichever community they belong to. Wrong is wrong, be it a Muslims, Sinhalese or Tamil..

One of the reasons for these drivers to become pimps/drug peddlers etc. is that there’re are more than enough Tuk Tuks in the country so when frustrated without income in the evening they resort to do bad things to earn money.

This leaves women to suffer, especially in the evening as Tuk Tuk drivers may take all the women are such & try to do a business.

So limit the number of Tuk Tuks on roads & make more buses available on roads & maintain the bus service through out the nights as well even with double charge.

To deal with the menace of anti-social perverted tuk-tuk drivers it is high time for the government to explore ways to follow a
standard policy to test their suitability on the following basis.
      1) At least passed the GCE examination; with ability to
      communicate in Sinhalese,Tamil and English.
      2) Person of good character with no previous convictions for any
serious offence for a previous period of 5 years.
      3) Familiar with all the places, roads, routes to and from
hospitals, schools, police and railway stations at the shortest
      possible time and distance.
4).Display the vehicle number wih his driving licence prominently
so for the passenger to read.
      5) The meter to be illuminated during night time to enable fare
      readable.
      6) The transport department to ensure that licences are only
granted to those without a history of drug addiction or
      alcoholism.

        2) Person of good character with no previous convictions for any

80% of our M.P.s cannot pass that test. So how can you expect tuk tuk drivers to meet those qualifications?

CT should go on printed edition to reach common mass. A fix for these all has to come from the mass.

When Samantha Power was there, she said small media contributed a lot to Coup reversal. Main media is corrupted and money oriented. A real News media can coroner them, if that is launched with some administrative efficiency.

The commentators pointing their finger at Political Culture is absolutely correct. This is all trickling from there.

I have empathy for the Lady with the Baby who got in to that Tuk Tuk , where the Driver was trying to ejaculate while driving.

But the Second Lady’s actions are mind boggling.
Even holding the Iphone while driving in some Western Capitals , the driver automatically gets a suspension plus cop a hefty fine too.
    .-
This Lady in contrast have the time to open the camera and capture the Masturbation Indecent Exposure frames of a Tuk Tuk Driver in Bamabalaitiya.
This is all while Driving probably her Hybrid Toyota.

This is absolutely an obvious danger to the fellow road using especially our Dalits who are known as pedestrians..
Who wait long minutes to cross the Galle Road in Bambalapitiya.

As for the Driver’s Masturbation allegation, I don’t think it is a big deal because there is no signs of the Willy being exposed.
The Driver can tell the Colombo Magistrate that he has a bad rash in the genital areas, which needs constant attention.

BTW it is not a bad idea to send these young Tuk Tuk Drivers back to School.
Dr Ranil’s Education Minister young Akila, who was in the other Colunm I am sure will organize a nice crash course based on Public Relations, Sexual and Ethical Behavior.

The last being the most important, because that is what hurts the Tourists most.
My Missus and her Friend have experienced it recently when the the Tuk Tuk driver had LKR 800 plus on his Meter for a Trip from Town Hall to Wella Gardens even before it reached Ramachrishna Temple..
When queried why the Meter was turning over so quick and fast, the Driver’s answer was because he was driving the Tuk Tuk fast to avoid the Traffic and help the ladies get home quick….
How is that as an example of for our new Hip Culture under Yahapalana Morals?…

Did you realise you are growing into a fully fledged moron?

“The Driver can tell the Colombo Magistrate that he has a bad rash in the genital areas, which needs constant attention.”

The judge should order the driver to go for a STD check up and ban him from operating three wheeler for one year, and order the wife and his mistress to undergo medical examination.

” When queried why the Meter was turning over so quick and fast, the Driver’s answer was because he was driving the Tuk Tuk fast to avoid the Traffic and help the ladies get home quick….”

I thought you care for the poor inhabitants of this island. Do you earn a living adhering to “An Honest Day’s Work For An Honest Day’s Pay”? Then why complain? You have a wife? Its a news to me. Who is this unlucky Vellala woman?

” As for the Driver’s Masturbation allegation, I don’t think it is a big deal because there is no signs of the Willy being exposed.”

Do you think the moron will stop at mastrubating? Their willi works faster than their brain.

Fixed Interest has done the best in the last Six months, And I switched at the right time.

Mate why do you want to get into Tuk Tuks with those perverts, when you can get a nice owner driven Budget Pick Me..
You can even talk to them in English to find out how Dr Ranil and is Yahapalanaya is going.

        Sorry to tell you mate.
It is not a very good feed back,,Please don’t ask what they told me..

The government better do something about it right now, before this nation gets a bad reputation like India. If we want tourists to come here, we HAVE to make it a safe destination, or we can say goodbye to tourism and one of our top revenues. These are scumbags, who have no respect for women, nor know how to behave like decent human beings. Shame on our nation if this gets out of hand.

In the process of finding a solution to the problen, the administrators should consider curtailing the frustration of the motorists in general. Before jumping into into negative conclusions about the tri-shaw driver one should be aware that there can be many frustrated women drivers around the cities. By the way Tuk-Tuk is a tourist attraction. It is better to curtail the presence of frustrated women drivers.

  • 7
    1

There is a simple solution, people please stop using tuk tuk, use taxi cars, safer, faster and better service. If you have to complain you know very well the taxi company will take action.

Government do not import any more tuk tuks. Show leadership Finance Minister Mangala.

There are easy ways to discipline these tuk-tuk drivers.

Its not changing the pillow, its call community activism. Unfortunately we Sri Lankans do not practice it, if we do it, as we saw during the 52 days illegal government, we will be successful in many issues. If we are to discipline these thugs as you say then politicians will get involved and will block it. In Community activism there is no way a politician can get involved unless the community permits it. In this case they will not.

The number of trishaws on the road must be curtailed. I dont know how this can be achieved but it must be done. There are more trishaws than people in colombo. Most of the drivers make a woman’s life a misery and think they can talk to us rudely and drive like maniacs and expose themselves. They also try to engage the woman passenger in unnecessary conversation and when you dont answer become nasty.

if someone thrashed this bugger…all TUKs will on strike until the thrasher is arrested and the cops will work in favour of them, so for the “change’ why not the public protest by not Riding Tuks until this moron is arrested (charged and licence cancelled) ???

Better to hire tuk-tuk of PickMe, so at least someone taking responsibility. However, PickMe service is such that the service is controlled by the participating drivers rather than by PickMe. So it is the drivers who decide when to be available in PickME, when to accept a trip depending on profits and easy, traffic free routes. So these services are also useless most of the time

  • 8

The tuk-tuk menace is national and must be a political issue.
The wife, daughters, sisters, aunts of politician never use a tuk tuk. They go about in expensive chauffer driven vehicles. Politicians and associates are never exposed to the humiliation described here.
The damage to tourism is immense. Our leaders only care about themselves.
    .
By the way, most tuk-tuks are owned by mafias who lease it on a day-to-day basis. Most drivers do not even earn enough to pay the lease. This is not meant as an excuse for their behaviour.
PS: Most tuk-tuks are into sex trade.

Woman in the first incident is a well known feminist from Colombo. She goes on trips around the world promoting feminism. If you read her full account of this incident then watch the videos, it does not align. My intuition tells me she staged this incident to bring about changes in the laws to benefit women at the cost of men.
Basically following the blueprint of the west. Feminism has caused immense damage to the fabric of western society, but the media wont talk about it (as the media is part of the agenda)
There are too many manginas in this world who fall for women and their lies. You better realise that women have an ability to deceive that is on another level to men. But dumb men always want to be white knights and save the ‘damsel in distress’

Burt, this is what our Sumanee calls as “EMPATHY”. Readers including women in these forum please go through Sumanees comments again and take note of his empathy. (Lankawe style) . Then we have John who seems to be ditched by his girl friend, wife or both. The TV anchor has own/government agenda to settle and is not simply justifying but spreading hatred, which our media is good at. To sum this up when experts like Rajeeva, Laksiri and the rest rest come out quoting about ancient cultural and religious values , agricultural inventions and other bullshit. In short, it is a very sad day where religion, politics and social media (what was created for a purpose) together is now converted into WMD, in taking away innocent lives. We do not need nuclear weapons any more , the destruction of our future generation in already in the process. This will be slow and more painful.People are taking pleasure in others misery and then call it “EMPATHY”

What is so strange about the TUK TUK drivers doing such things ? Our UN peacekeeping forces in Haiti, Indian Peacekeeping Forces in the North and East had done it, the channel 4 tv has telecasted Documentaries of Sri Lankan Forces performed their Heroic deeds on innocent Tamil women old, young and the LTTE women cadre.

We have been deaf, blind and dumb to all the atrocities and group sexual offences our war heroes have committed. Now the Nation as a whole has to stand up and address this most uncivilized and inhuman crimes on our fair ladies.

That is only if we are to call ourselves a civilised people.

All Sinhala pandithayo still wants LTTE for their survival. ah yes I can understand one point when there was LTTE there were no this kind of perverts cause all this perverts joined in armed forces and LTTE took care of them. Once LTTE perished flourished Perverts don’t want to join millitary to do farming and masonry.
So chosen the defacto profession tuk tuk driver.
Srilanka deserves it, sort of high standard output of Sinha le but it stinks
