United We Stand, Divided We Fall – The Standing Challenge To Our Divisive Politics!

By Rev. Fr. S. J. Emmanuel

Rev. S.J. Emmanuel

After the Easter Sunday bomb blasts in the Christian churches and tourist hotels, we took time in identifying the evil forces behind the attacks as well as trying to see why they targeted Sri Lanka.

But we all were united in shock and grief and our arms went wide to embrace one another in grief.

Although the government and the security forces shamefully started searching and blaming one another for lapses, the people as a whole with their religious and civic leaders of all color showed a massive solidarity and compassion for one another. We are all proud of this momentary peoples-power that cried out – United we stand, divided we fall.

Warning of our 1st Prime Minister

During the 450 years of colonial rule different sectors of our population may have suffered many forms of injustices or were disadvantaged. Hence one can easily imagine the resurgence and enthusiasm in 1948 among all sections of the population at taking complete control of themselves and their destinies. It was in  understanding the mood of the people that Mr. DS Senanayake , the first Prime Minister and popularly acclaimed Father of the Nation, gave the solemn warning – United we stand, divided we fall.

Temptations of egoistic majoritarianism

This wise principle of survival and prosperity for Ceylon as one nation of a multiethnic multi-religious communities was soon forgotten or was marred by an evil principle of egoism – Ceylon only for us –  us meaning, only the Sinhala Buddhist majority! The other ethnic groups and religions had to survive as sub-ordinates!

The evil doer was not a foreign element as happened on Easter Sunday. It was we ourselves setting aside the good of peaceful-coexistence, which would have brought strength and prosperity to all, giving into narrow selfish politics of division.

Politicians take over the game of divisive politics

Dreams and hopes of a bright new future were in the hearts of all people as people. But evil intentions have entered first into the minds of the English educated elite politicians who shared power with the whites during the penultimate phase of the colonial government. Replacing the white regime was for them an internal settlement between whites and themselves. Nevertheless the majoritarian democracy started well even with a divisive national flag and disfranchising of the Indian Tamils. No protests and no terror!

But soon it became a mobilization of the grass-roots of our population by Mr. SWRD Bandaraniake, who in 1927 proposed Federalism for Ceylon, but now to rise to power with his  ape anduwa and Sinhala only within 24 hours- a call well  responded by the monks, veda mahatyas and ralahamys of the grass-root population!

Nationalism of the majoritarian democracy.

Let us not be short-sighted in our reading of Sri Lanka’s post-independence history and identify only the LTTE terror, forgetting/overseeing the many mob-terrors and the state-terrors which preceded the birth of the LTTE. They were all connected as actions and reactions. After every divisive move by the majority and its governments, there were the non-violent protests of the Tamils, met by mob terror and military terror from 1960s. Finally state-terrorism gave birth to Tamil-terrorism of the Tamil youth which culminated in the 29 years old war between the government forces and the LTTE.

Even after  ten years cries of victims not  heard

Now that the war ended ten years ago, with heavy casualties to our population and left thousands of victims crying even today for restoration of normal life, the efforts of the two governments from 2009 till now, towards healing of wounds and restoration of peace and reconciliation are very minimal. And this shows the mutual suspicion of divisive politics has not ended.

Fulfilling accountability and responsibility

We who seek international assistance not only for prosperity but also for war, should also welcome international help for reconciliation. 27 donor-countries gave finance and weapons to the then Government for the war against the LTTE. They have repeatedly called for post-war accountability, reconciliation and peace. But we reject their call as interference against our sovereignty.

Seeking prosperity of the nation

All along Sri Lanka and its leaders have sought prosperity of the nation at the expense of national unity, forgetting the fact true prosperity can thrive only in a robust unity of the population. Neither the selling of our geographical strategy to the super-competing powers US-China-India, nor the island’s touristic resources to the world of tourism will bring true prosperity and happiness unless top priority is given even at this late stage to accelerate our efforts at building a united nation of Sri Lankans.

Passivity of religious and civic leaders had helped divisive politics

Although it is the minority, even within a majority of the population, which takes up extremist views, unfortunately the majority have been passively following the sad events. Because the Easter attacks targeted a places of worship, the religious leaders came in full force to the front. But in the history of very sad events in our  history, they too remained passive and distanced. Politicians can only whip up the weaker sections of our people by emotional slogans. But it is the religious and civic leaders who have the potential and the organs to enlighten people and warn them of the dangers of divisive politics.

Going beyond mere expressions of “United we stand” to reduce divisions

Let’s hope and pray that the shock and grief of Easter Sunday, be not limited to mere expressions and meetings of solidarity, but give us the courage and wisdom to shift our paradigm of thought and action from a divisive style of thinking, language and decisions to one of uniting all as a multiethnic and multireligious people, enjoying the richness in each and healing the wounds of one another.

One and a half Million including Fr Emmanuel achieved prosperity thanks to Pirahapran.
They were the main helpers of Dr Ranil and My Three Sira to topple the Previous Regime and give us Yahapalanaya.
Fr Emmanuel’s diocese even promised USD 4 Billion to Dr Ranil through our the FM Mangala ,to do Yahapalanaya on us.–

After 4 and a 1/2 years we now see the results , with Kochchikade , St Sebastian and Zion Church in tatters ,
45 Foreigners blasted to pieces with 200 our loca innocent Catholic brothers, sisters, moms ,dads and even children , And over 500 maimed with life threatening injuries.

Still Dr Ranil is yet to give the Diaspora and their local Agent the TNA, the Homeland so people can be united and stand as one, as Fr Emma has requested.
That prevented Mangala getting that USD 4 Billion from Surendran..

But Dr Ranil and his UNP Cabinet didn’t seem to have any problem bringing Prosperity to their Supporters.
Here are just a few Examples.

UNP Ex Finance Minster, the best in the World for that matter, when the Yhapalanaya came to Power lives in a Multi Multi Million Condo , and now is the new Real Power minster.
Turkmems Floating Power House Deal is going to make him a multi Billionnaire soon.

Dr Mahendran from the Diaspora became a Billionaire with his Son in Law in just 6 Months of Yahapalanaya.

UNP Sujeeva became a Multi Millionnire with just one Car Permit which he sold to a Wahabi. according to my Elders.

UNP. Minister Bathudeen has bought a whole Island , spanning 3500 Acres for 250 Million, Plus a massive Block of Land and property in the heart of Colombo.

Eastern Governor Hezbulla’s Son has got LKR 500 Million worth of Shares in Sharia Private Uni in the East, although the UNI is a donation from the Saudi Wahabis..

Sumane’s response to Fr. Emmanuel comes out like a jackal howling at the moon. The supposed terrorist has no bitterness or anger, does not even mention Islam even though his own religion suffered the most. Sinhala Buddhist Sumane goes to town with a litany of self-serving whines.
If terrorists have such attitudes and SinhalaBuddhists are like Sumane, let’s have more terrorists.

You have some weird notion of prosperity.
There are members of the middle class who think that life far from home is paradise.
But for most of the refuges life is far from prosperous.
Have you ever spoken to any Sinhalese or Tamil toiling in Europe or Canada?

“…accelerate our efforts at building a united nation of Sri Lankans.”
Whatever happened to the Tamil national politics of GTF/S.J. Emmanuel? From genocide discourse to human rights excesses to forget and forgive and from federalism to ‘united nation of sri lankans’ – 10 years have done wonders. No wonder these diaspora orgs have lost traction among the Tamils. Let us not forget the Sri Lankan nation state was bound to fail from its inception. Its history is only marked with bloodbaths (the worst being Mullivaikkal massacre) and resulted in Tamil genocide, so why still harp on upholding this nation state and non-existent unity?

      Thamizh,
“Its history is only marked with bloodbaths”
      ———
You are right. From 3rd century BC, Sinhale experienced bloodbaths due to invasions by barbaric Dravidians. They killed millions of native Sinhalayo. Dravidian invasions stopped after the arrival of Portuguese. From that point onwards, Portuguese, Dutch and British WPs became responsible for bloodbaths in Sinhale. They too massacred native Sinhalayo with the help from Demalu and Malays who were hired to serve in their Armies. After independence, Rohana Wijeweera, Velupillai Prabhakaran and Muslim extremists are responsible for bloodbaths.

” State terrorism gave birth to Tamil terrorism of Tamil youth ”

You have equalled state terrorism with the liberation struggle of Tamil youths which you now call Tamil terrorism. Well done sir. Why didn’t you say this when you were supporting LTTE.

    Well Said Rev. S.J. Emmanuel,

i endorse every word you say in this article.

This is the general impressive Tamil narrative and just yyou llook at the past through narrrow Tamil lens.

. The Tamils are happy about this narrative and take it round the world.

The blame is in the majority Sinhalese leaders and Tamils expect the entire world to support their just cause.
    .
But is it complete? Are the Tamil elites blameless? Could you build up a nation just by the joint efforts of the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim elites?

What about the peasants, workers and the poor among all communities? Were they not the majority?

Let us build up our nation from the grass roots rather than finding scapegoats?

It will be a long way to go

Let us not worry too much as to who will be our next President or Prime Minister! whoever is,it is the same.

We have to start from Zero and formulate a new constitution by the people and for the people without any interference from our politicians and the lawyers, but how is the million dollar question.

If only we have the will,, we can find a way out!!

“United We Stand, Divided We Fall” does not apply to this miserable shit hole Father.

United we Piss-off each other. Devided we Shit is what we have proved to the world. Also, the politicians have a advantage in sabotaging this country. When businesses go bust, hotels go bely-up and the real estate and property market bubbles pop, guess who has amasses the wealth to gobble off this assets cheaply like the Mahara Raajurru Horra’s did during the previous regime. Yes, the Sirisena, Araliya Traders, Dudley Horrasena, Ponil and all of this gang who benefit from these economic down turn to acquire all of these prime assets for a song. This has been their modus operandi to expand their wealth while the plutocrats demand that the working class to tighten their belts. All these attacks are strategically per-planned by design. Within this covert planning is to plant that Trojan horse for external manipulations by international ‘forces’ to fulfill their vested interests. Consider this Easter Sunday attack an extension of the false flag operation of the “war on terror” and the shock and awe campaign. It’s primary mission is perhaps to contain Chinese expansion.

When DS Senanayaka gave the assurance “Do you want to be governed from London or do you want, as Ceylon, to help govern Ceylon? On behalf of the (Ceylon National) Congress (founded by Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam in 1919) and on my behalf, I give the minority communities the sincere assurance that no harm need you fear at our hands in a free Lanka” did he mean it? Or is it a subterfuge to unveil the Tamil members of the State Council to vote for the Soulbury constitution ? The Soulbury constitution vested political power in the hands of Sinhalese who with 68% of the population formed the majority. The most charitable explanation is DS Senanayake never meant to keep the promise. He simply took the gullible Tamils for a ride. Since in the very year of Independence, D.S.Senanayake blatantly went back on the promise and bared his true colours as an unrepentant champion of Sinhala chauvinism by depriving one million Tamils of their citizenship. Independence for the Tamils has meant slow liquidation of their identity as a Nation that lived in a well-defined territory with their own language, arts, culture, customs and heritage. The moral of the story is that a majority community after tasting power will not want to share it with the minorities. Today, Sinhalese comprise 95% of the armed forces. In the public service, the Sinhalese are almost 90% when their population is only 75%!

    “United we stand”.
    Who is this “we”?
Is it an inclusive or an exclusive “we”?

Racial-religious extremists of the majority don’t want to stand united.
They want to dominate, and domination means not “we” but standing alone on the others.

    Realistic

Sumanasekera’s ranting should be dismissed out of hand like that of an unrepentant Sinhala supremacist. The Tamils have no regrets in bringing Sirisena and Ranil to power. Between two evils the Tamils chose the lesser evil. Sri Lanka has no future if the present political structure that favours the majority Sinhalese. It is useless to cite the destruction of Catholic churches by IS sponsored terrorists when Sri Lankan airforce have bombed churches where Tamils have sought shelter. On Navali church was bombed on 9 July 1995. Earlier the military warned civilians to clear the south-west of its base at Palaly, recommending churches and temples as shelters. At 4.30 p.m. an Argentine made Pucara fighter flew toward the Navali church, 3 km outside the combat zone, and bombed the sanctuary and adjacent courtyard. St.Peters Church in Navali and the adjoining St.Peter’s School where hundreds had sought shelter were badly gutted. 56 bodies were retrieved from the debris, many of whom were women and children. The final death toll in Navaly was about 120. Rescue workers reported that torn limbs and pieces of human flesh were strewn over the area.” So the Sri Lankan airforce set the precedent for the IS terrorists to bomb Christian churches.
On September 15, 1999, Puthukkudiyiruppu a town under the control of the LTTE was bombed killing at least 21.
On September 22, 1995, Nagerkovil school was bombed by Sri Lankan airforce in which bombing – 34-71 civilians lost their lives. The bombings by Sri Lankan airforce is not different from IS bombing.

    Rev. Fr. S. J. Emmanuel,

“United we stand, divided we fall.”
Almost all Buddhist Sinhala political leaders understand what he said. They also undertand What is Lord Buddha’s teachings. Most of the Sinhala masses also understand what their political leaders are doing. So, there is no point of talking about what the DS Senanajaka said. Otherwise how could they massacre over 100,000 Sinhala masses and 100,000 Tamils within seven decades. We may have suffered under European occupation for nearly five centuries but never had such a level of intense suffering of the native Sinhala and Tamil speaking people that happened under Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalist rule. What they left to the next generation? Lies, Violence, Corruption, raping and massacre of children. There is no chance for unity.

the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deadly Easter Sunday bombings that killed over 250 people, including 44 foreigners.
To be sure, the Islamic State has a reputation for taking credit for terrorist acts it had nothing to do with. Its claims must therefore be treated skeptically. At the same time, however, there is no gain saying that Islamist terrorist groups in South Asia and elsewhere support the Islamic State’s vision for a caliphate and crave alliance with it. And these groups, in solidarity with the Islamic State, have in the past targeted Christians on Easter. One such group is Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which killed 75 people in Lahore, Pakistan, in March 2016.

    Emmanuel,

Nothing to do with ethnic disunity….all is due to Lankan elite building their capital on the backs of the struggling Masses. Only this time, they took the easy way out and took money from Jihadists.
    _
Can’t believe that in the occurrence of Jihadists and their money roaming about Mother Lanka, and quadrupling their money over our heads, you have to condemn security forces searching and actually catching the Devils. You mean you want the Sharia money to still grow till your pay-masters from St. Paul Cathedral, London have balanced out Their budgets via these Jihadists?

Religions are the main culprits of world’s curse. Blind faith, non-existent Gods, following totally out dated rituals and stupidity are all part of the curse. religion is a money making venture today and exploiting ignorant ,and gullible people. Extreme islam ought to be wiped out if world has to progress. Also the Christian’s conversion strategy of helpless and vulnerable people, the story of “Jesus coming, are you read”, bull shit has to stop. Hindus have to change their silly rituals that were created by Brahmins to safe guard their exclusive interests. High time silly hindus become more rational and more logical. Sinhala Buddhism is a write off, it is better termed “Sinhala Political Buddhism”.Buddhist clergy is only interested in making money, spreading false history, and poisoning the people with racism and violence. Religions, etc are some thing very personal and it has to be within ones heart and in his home and not outside. So why should religions come to the public? Do we really need a ministry for religions? Is there a need for a State religion? Can anyone say what good religions have done to man kind except dividing them and untold violence and misery. There is no difference between racists and opposing religious groups, both have the same mindset. You follow your religion or whatever at home and in private and dont bring it to the public. In public be like any other. Dont exert your religion or faith on others. Of these religions, Islam is the worse because of the word of Non-Existing Allah that told that he is the only God and non-muslims cannot exit. This belief has to be erased once and for all if Muslims could co-exist with others and if not this calamity will continue.

Thank you Fr Emmanuel for outlining the issues we face from the perspective of our history.
Even after the Easter Sunday Tragedy it appears unity is not visible. I fear more tragedy in the future. Ethnic and religious communities less in number are at mercy of those that are more in numbers. Attempt at assimilation and resistance to such approach will lead whole of Sri Lanka to continue to be a failed state. Sangakara had made a wise appeal. I hope all citizens can take such appeal as a base for resolving our problems and achieve peace.

    Emmanuel is that person who said thus;
    Pirabhakaran is Jesus Christ.
LTTE fighters were soldiers of Christ.
Suicide bombers are Catholic martyrs worthy of catholic burial…….
There heresies were propagated by Emmanuel happily enthroned in his status as a priest of the Kingdom of God forever. With one foot officially placed in the Kingdom of God and the other foot poised to be set down on an earthly kingdom called Tamil Eelam at the expense of the lives of Tamil Youth & Children.
All this happened and continue to happen under the cloak & cover of his priesthood.

DOES THESE DEATHS MATTER TO S.J.EMMANUEL?

Must dig into the CT Archives..

I just read in the Colombo Media that Abraham on behalf of the TNA and Mano Ganeshan on behalf of our Hindian Tamil brethren in the Hill Country, have signed a MOU to join as a United Political Front. to fight for their rights. in light of what happened to the Catholics in the South.-

This looks like a History breaking .Agreement in the annals of not only Srilankan politics but also in Social Standings , Social and Religious Etiquette and perhaps even in Living Standards.

I am told that besides Mano Ganeshan, there is another dude by the name of Thondamanny who looks after our other Tamil bros in the Tea Estates.

Will he join this TNA , Mano Alliance?.

I am also told that Fr Emmanuel still has a very large flock in Mannar and Madhu as well as other parts of the East and even in the North.
Do they already belong to the TNA ?.

Will these new ground splitting developments cause problems to Dr Ranil .s New Lankawe Constitution with Federal States, which the UNP is going to promote together with their CTA as the Magic Pill to neutralize the Cardinal in Colombo .
As well as to eliminate the Muslim Terrorists and eradicate their Terrorism?…
