Updated: NPC Results: TNA 30, UPFA 7 And SLMC 1: “TNA Secures A Great Victory Today” – Sumanthiran

6th Update at 5.40 am Sri Lankan time –

“The TNA secured a great victory today at the Northern Provincial Council Elections despite heavy odds – blatant violations, voter intimidation and violence against its candidates. We bow to the resilience of our people. – TNA 30, UPFA 7, SLMC 1” TNA MP MA Sumanthiran told Colombo Telegraph.

5th update;

The Tamil National Alliance pulled off a surprising win in the Government ally EPDP dominated island of Kayts off the Jaffna Peninsula a short while ago, beating the UPFA by 4753 votes.
The Jaffna islands are traditionally strong support bases of the Government’s key ally, led by Minister Douglas Devananda.

4th update;

The TNA secured 27620 votes, the UPFA obtained 7063 and the SLMC received 199 votes.

The TNA took a very early lead in the race for the Northern Provincial Council when it clinched the races for postal votes in the Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mannar and Vavuniya Districts gaining on the ruling United Peoples’ Alliance.

In the Vavuniya Postal Vote Results, the TNA obtained 901 votes, the UPFA received 323 and the UNP received 65.

In the Vavuniya Postal Vote Results, the TNA obtained 901 votes, the UPFA received 323 and the UNP received 65.

1st update:

The Tamil National Alliance took a very early lead in the race for the Northern Provincial Council when it clinched the races for postal votes in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts gaining on the ruling United Peoples’ Alliance by a margin of 1096.

In the Mullaitivu District, the TNA which is the main opposition party in the Northern Provincial battle obtained 646 votes to the ruling UPFA’s 146.

The United National Party secured 02 votes.

In the Kilinochchi District the TNA received 756 votes to the UPFA’s 160, while the UNP managed one postal vote of the entire valid votes in the District.

Postal votes are traditionally cast by Government Servants who might be serving outside a home district. Postal voting results do not necessarily reflect the final result of a poll.

Mullaitivu is the former LTTE stronghold in the Wanni where the final battles of Sri Lanka’s separatist war was waged. The UN claims 40,000 people died in the final days of the battle along the Mullaitivu coast, an allegation staunchly denied by the Sri Lankan Government.

Northern Tamils went to the polls today to elect their provincial legislators for the first time in 25 years.

It will go around as violet, green and white is the colour of
      the women’s liberation movement.
Violet means Sahasrara“one is all and all is one”
Purple Rain- nothing exists as wholes and parts in their natural context.

Lets wait and See how the TNA will function and if they will deliver.. As the Northern voter wants to get On with life the Local TNA campaign was Jobs and economic prosperity, But for the Int LTTE emigres their campaign was the Creation for EElam.. So we will see which voters the TNA will work for??? But they won.. But let me tell Some of these fools here who are Quick to criticise the Government especially MR.. Most people knew the TNA will win and given the History the UNP will come in a second in the North .. But MR is the First Sinhala Leader since Sir John who travelled to the North to campaign for his party.. who are Tamils.. Not even JR did this during the DDC.. and All the Nationalist elements in his Government Threatened to work out if MR went ahead with the Elections.. But he Did.. which no other Sinhala leader would have done

You can go bum lick MR and he’l give you all you need to lick. Now let your singala government take care of you like they took care of the people in walleria. :)

Racists have not won fathima fartshima, they want freedom can’t you see.Go back into history and read about the jaffna kingdom. You muslims are different history. You came as traders and were allowed to marry local women and settle down but retained your religion. That mistake you made in stubbornly clinging onto your religion is going to cost you dearly in the future like what is happening to the rohingyas in burma.

Give up your religion if you want to live with the sinhalese.Unlike the tamils who had their own country and can claim it back, the sinhalese won’t tolerate your religion because they know you are on weak wicket.

      • 0
        0

fartshima, another alternative you can do instead of changing your religion, change the koran like the way the old testament which said to kill everyone who does not adopt christianity,to the new testament which is oozing with love for everyone, but conversion is done now through subtle means and not the sword.

So get rid of the old koran that says to put to death the infidels and unbelievers and write the new koran that states that if you slap a muslim he should turn the other cheek. If all the religions have the other cheek business we won’t have anyone taking advantage of it and the world will be a better place. Now what has happened is that people are afraid to give the other cheek lest they get another slap.

If you really believe that this koran and bible were the words of god and not written by shrewd humans you are also a idiot like your uneducated and gullible ancestors.

As long as you either don’t change the koran or change your religion you and your descendents can kiss goodbye to living in harmony with the sinhalese bhuddhists of this small island.

PS.Another problem with the koran is that it prohibits birth control.Sinhala bhuddhists will have nightmares that you will one day outnumber them.So delete it in the new koran.

@Thiru can u tell us why the pro-LTTE factions in Tamil Nadu well-endowed Emigtres based in the West. The so-called ‘Trans-national Government of Tamil Eelam’ (TGTE) and Global Tamil Forum (GTF) have issued statements a few months ago to Boycott the Elections, and not to participate in these elections??????? and at the same breath shout for democracy????? well it shows the Northern voter as stopped taking orders from the Int LTTE emigres.. And in a Complete U-turn the TNA suddenly issued silly statements praising Prabhakaran manage to get the support of the Int LTTE emigres??? who then in a complete u turn said we support the TNA.. after the Tamils of the North did not listen to their Boycott

SJV Chelvanayagam and Prabhakaran did the same. CVW is not different!

The Tamil Homeland wins showing the entire world that the SL Tamils are a distinct Nation in Sri Lanka who has all the rights to self-determination. This election is actually a referendum for the Tamil people to show the world that the SL Tamils have all the rights to take the Kosovo-Sudan-Scotland path.

      Fathima Fukushima:

What a sore loser you people are? Despite the worst of intentions not to or delay the provincial election, MP was cornered and had very little choice in going ahead with the election. He may be the President of SL, but he had exhausted all the shots. He has no more bullets to shoot. To you Fathima (or whoever you are), go and have a cup of tea to cool down. The Rajapakse regime had four years to win over the hearts and minds of the Tamils but it simply screwed itself. Instead, it widened the cracks further by antagonising the Tamils further. MR would be one frustrated and angry man – the dream of being in total control over the entire island seems to be eluding him, particularly by the Tamils.

Fathima Fukushima. Who and what the hell are you? You speak of war and consequences so blithely. You are a disgrace to whatever community you belong to. Remember that ‘war widows’ are not only in the North and East; many soldiers left widows in the South as well. The Tamils do not want war. I hope the GOSL reads the electoral message clearly and responds with intelligence and empathy to the minorities.

The army and EPDP tried all the dirty tricks to cheat and intimidate the voters but they stood firm and supported TNA to show their disatisfaction and distaste towards the colonialists. The army and EPDP also printed a fake edition of local daily, Uthayan, to say that TNA withdrw and Ananthi, their candidate joined the UPFA. This was in desparation to mislead the voters.

Thae governor Chandrasiri and Col Hathurusinghe acted like viceroys of Rajaoakse kingdom but people cannot be fooled for ever. Only sensible thing for the government to do is to grant a genuine Federal System to Tamil speaking people who will administer their areas in their local language. Both men must go and civilians must be appointed in their place.

CONGRATULATIONS to the NEW CM and his TEAM TNA from the great majority of the inhabitant population who are only looking to a better future for their offsprings in particular, in the current peaceful environment created after a great deal of suffering and sacrifice.

Tne New CM has a great challange now,

Does he go along with the great expectations of this great inhabitant population of Srilankan?.

    or

Does he embark on implimenting the LTTE Proxy Sambandan’s “Manifesto”?.

Yarl Devi, is only 50 or 60 Kms away from the once great city , of Jaffna.

A9 is all set to go express all the way there.

These two projects not only add a few extra notches to the 20 % plus growth in the North, but provide convenient and economical access to the non vellala poor when they need to come down to Colombo.

    These are all Chinese funded.

With senior TNA Vellalas already on record as saying “No Chinese will be allowed beyond Vavynia ” and “No land to build Expressways to Jaffna “, can the Vellala CM overide their demands and allow the implimentation of these projects?.

Will the new CM allow the Central Govt to carry out other economic developments to uplift the non Vellala poor and bring their per capita to be on par with South especially the Vellala residents on CM’s home turf?.

Will the per capita of the people from the ex Tiger areas who embraced the new CM will be the same as the Vellalas in Jaffna, when the Vellala TNA present their their next CM candiate in 4 years?.

      0

      Mr. Sumanasekera,

Will the government work with the NPC to carry out these projects? There has to be consensus, consultation and co-operation on these and many other issues. The Tamils have given their unequivocal verdict- a united Sri Lanka and devolved governance in the NP. Both are quite compatible. All castes in the north have backed the TNA and its potential Vellalah CM. the Tamils in the north have united as never before in this democratic exercise. They stand as one people and have expressed their yearnings as one. They delivered their damning verdict on the government approach and the role of the quislings in the scheme of things. The ball is in the government court. If the government does not play a fair game and fails deliver what the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka, living in the north desire, it will be answerable to history. Let us all learn our lessons at least now and discharge our duty to this beautiful and resplendent isle- the mother to us all.

      Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

        Dr Rajasingham,

Does the Vellala CM’s “Manifesto” mention anything about cooperation with the Govt in developing the infrastructure and helping the non Vellala inhabitants to lift their living standards?.

If I haven’t noticed it in the CM’s long Manifesto ,please be honoured to restate it here to enlighten the ordinary punters.

        • 0
          0

          Mr.Sumanasekera,

Here are some excerpts from the TNA manifesto that answer your query:

          * “In addition to continuing to pursue a just and lasting peace we will actively engage in addressing the immediate and current concerns of the people”

          * ” A comprehensive programme for the development for the North and East including the creation of employment opportunities for the youth will be undertaken with the active support of the Sri Lankan State, the Tamil Diaspora and the International Community”

          * “To achieve the above self-reliance it is imperative that we need self-government. We have set out a two state constitutional process to secure this. Whilst we do our utmost to play a positive role in promoting self-government for the Tamil-Speaking
peoples in the North-East, we will carry carry on with our political negotiations for meaningful sharing of powers of governance”

          * “TNA would engage with the Sri Lankan State, International community and the Tamil Diaspora to address the issue of long term investment and aid to the province”

Despite the legalese and propaganda verbiage permeating the TNA manifesto, its intent is quite clear. It is ready to work with
the government of Sri Lanka to resolve problems and further development. This is the overwhelming mandate that has been given to the TNA by the northern Tamils.

Development will naturally include many aspects including infrastructure.

The non-Vellahlas are upwardly mobile people now and are not an oppressed people any more. They are also probably a majority now.
The Vellahlah poor are also a disadvantaged people today. The toddy tapper who lives close to my house and helps out in my fruit-vegetable garden, told me yesterday that he had voted for the TNA. This despite posters pasted by a candidate from the UPFA calling out the toddy tappers to vote for him! This toddy tapper who regularly works for me, has a daughter who is cashier at a bank and a son who does building contracts.

The non-Vellahlas are part of the vote bank and cannot be alienated. Even if subtle acts of differentiation are yet prevalent in society, outright discrimination is rare. Further, it is becoming more and more difficult to identify who belongs to which caste.

Caste issues are a dead or almost dead horse, people occasionally try to flog!

          Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

This is what Mr.Sambanthan is reported to have said after the results of elections for NPC were announced,
“The democratic verdict of the people is clear. Within the framework of a united, undivivded country they want to live in security safeguarding their respect, and dignity with adequate self rule, to be able to fulfil their legitimate political, economic social and cultural aspirations. The TNA is committed to the achievement of their objectives and expect the government would also extends its fullest cooperation”

Mr.Basil Rajapakse has also expressed similar sentiments.

Sangha is lurking in the shadows. Soon you will hear demands to abolish Northern Provincial Council or seek Supreme Court ruling to void the election results. This would be repeated until UPFA wins all 38 seats. Don’t worry about the costs.

Veddha,i agree with you that the sangha will also pose a problem, but the guys i mentioned will be a bigger problem.

Gotapaya is the defacto president while modawansa and chimpanzika are the thompson twin mouthpieces of mahinda.Chimp is a bit quiet now because he is cheesed off with mahinda after being kickd out of the electricity portfolio.

So these guys are in effect the monarchy of srilanka consisting of king mahinda and prince in waiting gota and basil.Mahinda and gota’s brain put together is equal to basils,so basil is keeping quiet about his feelings because he can see the consequences of these two idiots actions pandering to sinhala bhuddhism and trying to bully hindus while 18 nautical miles away there are over 1 billion hindus and 250 million dravidians.

The monarchy has always traditionally highly respected the advice of the sangha, but advice only it will be.Monarchy has never allowed the line to be crossed where the sangha will make the decisions except briefly with SWRD the ponnaya monrch and he paid the penalty for that.

The rajapaksha monarchy are not ponnayas and when they tell the sangha to shut up they will or else…..If they tell the sangha to open their mouth then they will,if they tell them to now shut it they will. The line will not be crossed with this mob.

India is now wise to this game of using other mouthpieces for what the mahinda wants to say,and everytime modawansa, chimp, gota and sangha open their mouth and mahinda is silent they will call up GL or somebody and give them a blast about consequences.

Then there will be silence for some time and slowly it will start again with a squeak and if no response from india build up to a crescendo. When india wakes up it will be back to a squeak.

It is important we remember that the group that won this Northern Province elections has contested under the banner of ITAK, the leaders of which party has issued the infamous Waddukodai resolution on May 14th, 1976 that urged then Tamil youth to take up arms and insisted never to lay it down until Eelam is won. We should not forget that no former or current leader of ITAK ever retracted the vile statement that lead to all the terrorism by LTTE.

Ado Hora patriot Hooo! Learn to accept defeat and keep your gab shut at least now. Wait and see the TNA will establish Law and Order in the North and Develop the Northeast with the state of the Art facilities that the South will be left behind as under Developed. Let it be Schools, Hospitals, Hotels. You name it they will have the best. Further they will receive Funds from the Tamil Diaspora, for the TNA to utilize for development unlike the Southern Politicians who will pocket the bulk. Although MR govt. boasted after the War that they could get the Diaspora to bring in $500 billion not a cent was sent.

By the way can you tell me where you can get some Humble Pie?

“inhabitant population who are only looking to a better future for their offsprings in particular”
This is true people will not care about politics if they have the opportunity to live as equals with pease and an oppurtunity to succeed in life.

“peaceful environment created after a great deal of suffering and sacrifice.”
This is crap and you know it, there is no peace when women and children fear to go out alone, parents dont know when their children will be kidnapped and still dont know what happened to their loved ones.

“Does he embark on implimenting the LTTE Proxy Sambandan’s “Manifesto”?.”
Does’nt the run-up to the election and the election tell in no uncertain terms how hollow the humantarian operation was? If TNA are LTTE proxy and people voted overwhermingly for TNA it means the people were with LTTE and state was was for domination and not liberation.

Hats off to the Tamil population who have told Rajapakstan that they cannot be bought by roads, airports or trains but they value peace and dignity and until they receive that the central govt is not welcome.

      “With senior TNA Ve….”
You tried this and failed miserably, tried this card, tried to say TNA was LTTE proxy and when realised people were still with LTTE, tried to bring in KP and even said the CM candidate gave harsher sentences for LTTE than sinhala judges and still failed.

The question is when are you guys going to accept facts for what they are and then go forward as one country?

Congratulations to the TNA and its candidates. It was the expected result. The voter turnout is impressive. It is an overwhelming endorsement of the TNA. However the question what this endorsement implies will be debated from many perspectives in the months and years to come. The recent CPA survey, preceding the polls provided a pointer as to what the people want. However, this may not turn out to be what they get. Like the five blind men who were asked to identify an elephant by feeling different parts of it, interpretation of these results will widely differ. I hope there will be at least some deaf men around to tell the blind men that what they were identifying were parts of the elephant- the whole.

I also hope the government will discover the much needed wisdom it lost sight of as the end of the war receded and cooperate with the newly elected NPC to serve the people of the north well. The interests of Sri Lanka and the interest the world which are increasingly focussed on Sri Lanka demands this. However, this may be too much to hope, considering the warped thinking that underlines our politics.

The results of the NWP and CP elections seem to be not in accordance with general public mood. The margins by which the UPFA is leading and will probably win by, are bound to raise many eyebrows. The analysis and interpretation of these results in the coming weeks, may uncover the mystery.

ha,ha,ha,the thugs have such low IQ and you are talking about wisdom,Dr.Narendran.Now they will go hammer and tongs at the TNA,tie up their hands, give no funds and precipitate the separation of the north.

      Dr,

So you are giving your interpretation about CP and NWP results demanding everybody to accept that? You also seem to infer that Northern Tamils have made a choice with wisdom and the government doesn’t possess that wisdom, eh?

NP, CP and NWP have made certain choices. They will reap the consequences accordingly.

      • 0
        0

        Hela,

Of course the government has proven itself to be stupid and very unwise on many issues connected with the whole island. Their lack of wisdom in matters pertaining to the north, has paved the way for the present results.

The government, by defeating the LTTE has made such an election possible, despite its initial reluctance to hold it. Thank God it did or was made to. If not, it would not have had the opportunity to gauge Tamil public opinion. This opinion must be respected, if Sri Lanka is to prove it is a democracy, it claims to be day in and day out.

I do not in any way say the TNA has acted wisely in many fronts in the post-war era. But they have made slow but steady moves towards more inclusive national politics and acted very wisely in nominating Justice Wigneswaran for the CM post. Although the TNA manifesto was not what it could have been in words and tone, it underlined a ‘United Sri Lanka’ and ‘Devolution of governance’ in the NP within that concept.

The Tamils have endorsed these two principles overwhelmingly. Further, the recent CPA survey has underscored what the Tamils in the north aspire to- a better, prosperous, progressive and peaceful life.

The government should reciprocate and permit the TNA to perform and deliver through the PC system the needs of the people in the north as best as it could. This will be the acid test for the TNA too. The Tamils do not ask for anything more or anything less.

Moderation in word and deed is the need of the hour.

I can concur with most of what you say Dr.N. while taking this opportunity to congratulate the TNA on it’s expected victory.
But what can be done if the Provincial Government’s plans to execute it’s manifesto policies becomes illusory without the necessary allocation of the funds by the government as another commentator has made out in this forum?
The government’s finances are in such a mess that it can divert the attention of the people of the South very effectively by creating a dysfunctional situation for TNA administration from making any progress on the social or economic front by forcing it to explore adventurist projects instigated by outfits like the TGTE etc. That is the problem.

            Uthungan,

I have always considered the 13th amendment a big bag of tricks. However, it is no doubt a starting point of sorts. The MR government has to tap into yet unexplored wisdom to make the system work. The TNA has to first use the 13th , as it is, to do what can be done. It is going to be a trying time for the TNA both in terms of the 13th and their own lack of administrative experience. The TNA should try every possible way to work with the government. Since it takes takes two hands to clap, the MR government should reciprocate. The TNA and the government will also have a problem in controlling the extreme elements in their fold, who are ready to create more confusion and arouse animosities, at a drop of a hat. The TNA for starters should permit the NPC to operate as an independent body and give the space for justice Wigneswaran to exploit his advantage as a non-political, judicious and learned person, both untainted and unglorified by the past.

It is going to be a fire walk of sorts which will burn us Tamils or prove our mettle. The CM-elect has an immense responsibility on his shoulders to bring us out of this fire walk intact. He should not repeat the stupidity and knee-jerk reactions of Varadarajperumal, in a bygone era. It is not Tamil pride or self respect on test. , but Tamil intelligence, wisdom, pragmatism, doggedness, determination and far sight. Non-volence in words and deeds, regardless of provocations, should be our guiding principles.

    A win for democracy

Yet, it is a defeat to the country with mono ethnic, racist separatism taking hold in the North. The idealogy that justifies, numerous massacres in places like kokilai, Nayaru, Bindunugaswewa, Arantalawa, Kathankudi etc and the ethnic cleansing of other ethnicities (so called outsiders) like the 75,000 Muslims so that Sri Lanka Muslim Congress does not feature in Jaffna & Kilinochchi districts while receiving 6,000 votes from the entire North…..has been endorsed by the Northern Tamils.

At the same time 20-25% of the voters rejected that idealogy which provides a ray of hope…..A huge responsibility falls on 7 elected councillors to further the idea of inclusiveness their voters expressed(hope the remaining SLMC councillor realises their predicament in a mono ethnic Tamil supremacist idealogy).

The struggle for the country’s survival continues…..

IF war, murders, bomb blasts, abductions, child soldiers, etc. continued in Jaffna district, this would NEVER have happened.

e.g. At the 1994 election EPDP won 9 out of 12 seats.

Peace and Tamils don’t go together.

If I may be permitted to remind you recent ethnic cleansing didn’t start with LTTE but with citizenship act of 1948. The hard working upcountry Tamils were made stateless overnight and deported back to India after toiling and dying in this island for generations.

The Tamils were only following your footsteps and LTTE was the manifestation of this inhuman act.

During the war Gota cleanse the capital, attempted to send all Tamils from Colombo and suburbs back to Vanni, it was the international outcry which stopped this mad dog.

The Mahawamsa itself talks about cleansing, and Vijaya myth symbolises and justifies Sinhalaese Ethnic cleansing of Native People.

      • 0
        0

        Vedda,

I would also like to remind you that Tamil legislators supported the citizenship act.

The act didn’t ask all upcountry Tamils to go. It recognised their contribution to some extent and sought to re-balance a massive historical ethnic re-engineering (I might add in genocidal proportions) perpetrated by the British invaders.

The upcountry Sinhala peasants permanently lost their lands and are suffering todate as a result.

Do not lie about what Gota did. He never touched Tamils living in Colombo. His actions were aimed at temporary residentns staying in lodges during the conflict period as the related security risk was proven time and again. All Tamil suicide bombers were such temporary residents. It was a court ruling that stopped it (please give the due credit to the judiciary).

The evolution of Sinhala nation is primarily through coming together of the native tribes of ancient Sri Lanka. Your ilk decided to go to the jungle on a normadic hunting lifestyle and we decided to build permanent habitation and do farming.

“I would also like to remind you that Tamil legislators supported the citizenship act.”

Yes of course they did in return for crumbs, a class/caste compromise. However, the act should not have been initiated in the first place. It was not Ponna who drafted it, he simply went along with the Sinhala/Buddhist majority. The act itself was a betrayal of the working class.

The act made almost all the hard working people stateless. If this was not cruelty then what was?

          ” re-balance”

Its funny you should use this cute word which is being popularised by Washinton Consensus, and the anti west Dayans and anti imperialsist Helas are merrily using it.

I too want to re-balance, want you to go back to your ancestral homeland India. Would you now round up all your people including your Tamil brethren and put them in boats back to India?

“Do not lie about what Gota did”

The Courts ordered this hangman Gota to stop his practice of apartheid.

“The evolution of Sinhala nation is primarily through coming together of the native tribes of ancient Sri Lanka.”

If so when are you going to amend school texts books and remove Vijaya myth from curriculum, advise your Sinhala/Buddhist so called historians (I prefer Novelists) not to perpetuate the myth in daily writings?

          Your hypocrisy knows no bound.

SL can do what it wants TNA will be a winner either way. If it gets the funds necessary it can have a clean and well managed PC, it has the people with knowledge and intergrity. If it goes the otherway it have the people to beat the crap out of the govt in a court of law and also to present a credible case to the international community why it needs independence. So the choice is Colombo’s.

Why is MR reluctant to share power with TNA. As a lawyer, MR should know what is meant by self-determination. What will be the next course of action of BBS? Word of caution to the hysterically esctatic Vellala supporters here.

Only 62% of the 710k voted,

Take out the Vellalas in Colombo and outer who went to vote, and the total inhabitant vote is less than 400k.

310,000 mainly the poor rural didn’t approve the LTTE proxy Sambandan’s “Separtist”” Manifesto offered by the Vellla CM.

Is that a clear message to the TNA that life for these poor rural people is more than providing their children and their youth to the TNA to fight a another battle on behalf of the good looking people with good intentions in the Diaspora?.

While TNA asked the Tamils to grant them only two-third Majority, the Tamils have granted them five-sixth Majority even with various odds going against them to participate in the voting! The maturity of Tamil voters is mindboggling. The Sinhala government’s multiple manoeuvres to topple TNA did not materialize. The Tamils have taught a good lesson to the enemies and the traitors.

It is Crystal Clear that the Tamils have granted LEGITIMACY to the TNA to be their SOLE REPRESENTATIVES to carry on with their Election Manifesto promises!!

sumane scroll up and read a comment given by Dr narendran wherein he says that the TNA manifesto states unitary state and devolution. How can you reconcile with separation as you claim a unitary state. Therefore tamils in the north have accepted a unitary state.

As for the 62% only vote that you deride, you should look at it from the correct perspective. If the tamils wanted a separate instead of unitary state they would not have gone and voted to show their protest and the voter turnout would have been in the twenties. The world would have taken notice and decided a political solution is not possible and the only alternative is a cyprus, balkans, timor south sudan type of solution. Now you should try to reciprocate the hand of friendship that the tamils have extended and set up a one country 2 people solution.

what about the NCP and Central province turnout which was much lower than the Northern one.How do you explain that. The tamils seem to have more faith in the political process than the sinhalese who seem to have got disgusted of politics and have shown that by staying away.

Hey man talking like a kavum eating modaya again are we?

silly fool look at the stats below for voter tunrout where the UPFA won

      Matale 59.48%
      Nuware Eliya 70.73%
      Kandy 60.66%
      Puttalam 56.9%
      Kurunagala 60.75%

and areas where the TNA won

      Jaffna 67.77%
      Killinochchi 71.81%
      Mannar 71.76%
      Vavuniya 69.11%
      Mullaitivu 70.79%

      (source http://election.dailymirror.lk/english/index.php/maincontroller/area/10)

so as you can see the places where govt won the voter turnout was less than the places where the TNA won

so if you go by your kavum eating theory are you saying that the Govt victory is nothing significant because most places the turnout was
in the first place anything above 50% is a good voter turnout barely touching 61% barring Nuwara Eliya

Yes the Northern Tamils have clearly endorsed the separatist path. Let them proceed on their suicidal path to total self destruction.

Northern Tamils have spoken. TNA asked the Northern Tamils whether they wanted development promised by the Government party or they stood for Tamil Nationalism and Self Determination. By voting overwhelmingly for the TNA, Northern Tamils have categorically said they wanted the latter promised by the TNA. Well and good, let us see whether TNA with their power of “internationalism” (meaning the support of the so-called international community) could deliver on their promises. The ball is now in the court of TNA leaders. Government should now allow them to pursue their goal but stamp out firmly another armed struggle.

Since Northern Tamils have rejected development, Government should immediately stop all development work in the North and allocate funds already set aside for these works to develop other regions of Sri Lanka. There is no need now to extend rail service beyond Kilinochchi. In the first place it was LTTE that destroyed the railway lines and other infrastructures. Why should other Sri Lankans pay for their repair and restoration.

Vigneswaran should shift his residence permanently to the North and live in the midst of his people. He should renounce his Sri Lankan pension and the pay and privileges the Sri Lankan Government would provide him as the Chief Minister of Northern Province. Sumanthiran should also pack his bags and go to Jaffna.

It is also better for all those Northern Tamils who are now settled in Colombo and other parts of Southern Sri Lanka to leave and go to their Northern homeland promised by the TNA.

If Northern Tamils have not learnt the lessons of Nandikadal what can others do? My only appeal to TNA, leave the Eastern Tamils alone. They are not part of your Tamil Eelam homeland. They are a separate people who are an integral part of Sri Lanka and who have from historical times lived amicably with the Sinhalese and Muslims.

When you wish to send Tamils living outside of north to Northern part of SL by force, are you willing to accept all SL Sinhalese/Muslim/Tamil parasites spread all over the world back in SL.
What about your brothers, sisters, mothers, nieces; aren’t they all want to escape Miracle of Asia?
You are taking bullshxxxt mate… Because of people like you Nagas, Siri Lanka will only provide ample of economic refugees, housemaids, drivers (Korea) to all over the world in the next 50 years….

      Naga,

Oh…so you are motivated by your regionalism; you can always hug Karuna Amman and his gangs tight, but don’t forget that Sampanthan and Wigneswaran are from Trinco. It seems to me that a small number of people from Batticaloa want to assume the ‘Eastern Tamils’ mantle for themselves.

        Agnos

Check your facts first. Wigneswaran is not from Trinco. He is a Jaffna Tamil and he himself has claimed that he is related to Ramanathan. As for Sampanthan, veteran communist Dr Ramakrishnan once told me that his parents came from Kerala. I understand his children are married to Keralites.

You should also know that all Eastern Tamils are Batticaloa Tamils. “Mattakalapu Thamalagam” (Batticaloa Tamil land)extends from Kottiyaram in the present Trincomalee district to Panamai in the present Ampara district. I should have said Batticaloa Tamils instead of Eastern Tamils.

Batticaloa Tamils have never been under Jaffna Kingdom. Batticaloa and the whole of the present geographical area of Eastern Province were part of the greater Kandyan Kingdom. Batticaloa Tamils had two sub-kings, one in Eluvankarai and the other in Paduvankarai.

Paduvankarai was populated with the Mukkuwa people who originally came from Kerala. They are a matriarchal society and they have their own customs and practices. Mukuwa people had their own law called Mukuwa Law which was even codified by the Dutch. They had their own caste system which is dis-similar to the caste system in Jaffna. My understanding is that Mukuwa people were the first to migrate to Batticaloa from Kerala.Early Mukuwa settlements were in Western Sri Lanka in the present Negombo and Chilaw areas. Mukuwas are a warrior caste and they also served the Sinhala kings during historic times.

Eluvankarai is mostly populated with another warrior caste, namely, Kurukula Khsatriyas. They had their own king and like their cousins Mukuwas are a matri-lenial society. They had their own separate customs and practices. Among them too their is a caste hierarchy which is different to the caste system among the Jaffna Tamils.

You will not find the Vellala caste in Batticaloa. Those who claim to be Vellalas are those who originally came from Jaffna and settled down in Batticaloa town and in places like Mandur. Jaffna Tamils came over to Batticaloa during the British period to serve their colonial masters as the British could not many find English educated persons among the Batticaloa Tamils. Some rich Jaffna people also came over to Batticaloa, bought lands and settled in Batticaloa town. Even former MPs like Devanayagam and Rajan Selvanayagam are of Jaffna origin. Joseph Pararajasingham too was not a pure Batticaloa Tamil (he was from Mannar) and his wife Sugunam has Jaffna origin.

Jaffna Tamils as they do where ever they go dominated the Batticaloa Tamils. There is an under current of great animosity among educated Batticaloa Tamils against Jaffna Tamils. When I was a student I felt the Jaffna domination in Batticaloa. All the high officials were from Jaffna, the judge was a Jaffna man, and in the hospital the doctors were from Jaffna. These Jaffna Tamils robbed the Batticaloa youths their only job opportunities at the Valaichenai Paper Mills because the high ranking Jaffna officials there gave the jobs to their relatives imported from Jaffna. When district wise University admission was introduced these dirty Jaffna Tamils got their children to sit the AL Examination from Batticaloa and entered University on the Batticaloa quota.

Batticaloa Tamils never voted for Tamil Congress or Federal Party until 1956. SJV Chelvanayagam could not find a lawyer to contest in Batticaloa and had to settle for JSC passed Chelliah Rajadurai. As a senior Federal Party MP Rajadurai should have succeeded Chelvanayagamn but the cunning Amirthalingam took over as the FP leader on the latter’s death. The venomous Amirthalingam pitted Kasi Anandan against Rajadurai which made him to leave the party and join the government. The same was the story in the LTTE. Karuna was a brilliant commander and he won many victories for LTTE, But, the LTTE Jaffna leadership never gave him due recognition or place and other LTTE commanders from Jaffna always undercut him. It is also well known that Batticaloa cadres were only given menial jobs by the LTTE leadership. LTTE collapsed as a fighting force when Karuna left with over 6000 battle hardened cadres. Former India’s National Security Advisor MK Narayan told me that it was Karuna’s departure that weakened LTTE and led to its eventual defeat. He said the writing was on the wall for LTTE when Karuna left.

Batticaloa Tamils were not too concerned or affected by the Sinhala only policy introduced by Bandaranaike. Jaffna Tamils were not fighting for their language rights but their fight was to safeguard their privileged positions in the public service. They dominated as government officials, doctors, engineers and technocrats. Introduction of Sinhala was to eliminate the disproportionte ratio of Jaffna Tamils in government service. Sinhala leaders like Bandaranaike were only correcting an imbalance by introducing Sinhala as the official languge. Sinhala people felt what the Batticaloa Tamils felt about the Jaffna Tamils. When Sinhalayas went the hospitals, government offices, railwayt stations etc. etc. they found only Jaffna Tamils occupying important positions.

Ethnic problem in Sri Lanka is the creation of Jaffna Tamils. Jaffna leaders were the first to use the communal card with stupid demands like Ponnambalam’s fifty-fifty demand. Jaffna Tamils are suffering for the stupidity of their leaders. And they will continue to suffer.

I read somewhere, probably at DBSJ’s site, that Wigneswaran had ancestral connection to Trinco. I can’t believe that someone who lives in Australia and benefits from its western traditions, still clings to caste consciousness, regionalism and harbors so much resentment against Jaffna Tamils. I have had many friends from Batticaloa who studied with me at Peradeniya and they have never talked to me in those terms. But it is good to know about some of your grievances whether real or imagined.

      Naga the Nagarajah,

You are mad, bad and an ugly King of snakes, serpents and vicious vipers as your parental name befits you and a dam dirty disgrace to all that is noble and great of and in humanity. Much against any protestations you may offer without evidence to the contrary from even if given by the apparent Rawana like king that is not be trusted, you must be in the direct and/or indirect pay of the familial and clannish so-called democracy in SL since independence from the British who regret not having given Ceylon a similar constitution like what was given to India in the light of the post-independence sporadic-violent and bloody history that is ongoing to this very day and well beyond.

You definitely still smarting and full of vengeance and spite after your of the position you held at the Australian Special Broadcasting Service to Raymond Selvarajah (RaySel). Especially now that they have expanded to a 4 days a week coverage and he has a staff of 4 getting a handsome salary of the Vic Govt. What has become of all your too-ing and fro-ing between India and SL and trying to carve out a niche for your own aggrandisement not unlike that Vet Dr Noel Nadesan to and with whom you’ll have mutual dislike as you’ll are both after the same if not similar fulfilments to your egos and now I am beginning to understand why you did not ever want to meet me in person when I once called you when I was in Sydney.

He has not been well rewarded as he expected for the hospital building he donated to Gotha who was in then interested in eco-tourism in one of the islands off Jaffna built from unaccounted moneys from parts of the Tamil Diasporas. You seem to still barking up the wrong tree for your own rewards if not to satiate your venom and vengeance ignoring the sorry plight of SL since independence and now more crashing headlong into a another downward spiral much against the cautioning of Tisaranee Gunesekera and other eminent and not eminent writers, journalists and members of the international community.

It’s also true that parts of Europe were like that quite far back in time and their influence during colonisation has only allowed our politicians to leave out the best of their legacy and take-on the worst of it and add on more of their greed and stupidity. May I further add that not all of us are born equally as we tend to mostly claim. We are all both mad and bad to some extent but politicians need to be both mad and bad to a greater extent than the average citizen and/or subject. In most other cases we are neither mad nor bad but with poorly developed brains that may have been affected by even the poor nutrition of our grandparents.

Most repeat offending criminals seem to have poorly developed frontal cortex that do not let them think much of the consequences or reign in their emotions. Much of our probs and ills stem from the myth that we are all born equal when the reality is otherwise where one doubts if even identical twins are born that equal. Though our needs and wants may be often similar and/or the same, yet even there people differ due to their genetics, epigenetic, mental developmental constraints, stagnations and retardations due to the bio-socio-cultural milieu and other mematic factors.

Northern Tamils have voted to send message to the GOSL that no amount of money spent for development & upliftment of the lives of Northerners at the expense of the Southerners were not good enough.

Northerners have sent a clear message that they are the sort of people who want to eat the cake and have it as well. Further, they are satisfied with the suffering they underwent for 30+ years and they are with the pro terrorists party…………

What would the Northewrners in the South will have to say?
Armed forces have to be aware though they defeated the LTTE the terrorists mind set of the Northerners have not diminished. The military will have to remain their for a good length of time.

Its time the GOSL to lick their wounds and divert the funds for the North for the development of the SOUTH.

Its truly the Tamil Spring (Or Tamizh vasantham), a vote for peace and federalism within a united Ceylon. This is our very own Jasmine revolution (mallikai puratchi) where the Tamil electorate exercised its franchise in the true democratic spirit. Congratulations Justice Wigneswaran. Please now deliver on the development front. We need investment, jobs and a life of dignity. Vanakkam

      Sri Lankan Tamil

Good point. We need to action not lip service that was given by TNA for last 30 odd years. Poor tamils need some relief. I am sure they do not need another war.
