As those of you who do me the honour of keeping in touch with my columns know I have been a critic of American capitalism and imperialism, but on one point I have been firm. America (and some other liberal democratic countries) are less racist, bigoted, and culturally primitive on these matters, than Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Japan and Islamic majority states. (I use the word racist for racial, ethnic or religious differences).
This thought came back to mind again today (7/11). The US had, and re-elected for a second term a black president (though hated by intellectually challenged pro-Trump people) and now elected a person of colour of Indian Tamil origin as vice-president. It has now also elected its second ever Catholic president; Kennedy was the first. Can you imagine the day when a Muslim non-Buddhist will be president of Sri Lanka or a Tamil not a Sinhalese prime minister? If you can imagine the day your imagination is more fertile than mine – good for you.
Nor can I foresee the day when something like Black-Lives-Matter which mobilised tens of thousands of whites, unfolds in the majority community in Sri Lanka against carnage such as the 1983 massacre or violence against Muslims. MIRJE (Movement for Inter-Racial Justice and Equality) was led by Father Paul Caspersz a Burger Catholic and his principal lieutenants were a Tamil Catholic and a raceless Marxist. The radical monk of recent times, Sobitha Thero with whom I have worked did not actively intervene against anti-minority pogroms – apologies to the late Thero if I am wrong.
On an allied matter, once again I renew my call for a National Cabinet to defeat covid. Biden has risen above partisanship and gone all out in a quest for national unity. He is facing a far worse covid and other challenges. By National Cabinet I do not mean “national government” but something like Churchill’s War Cabinet to meet an existential challenge after which parties resume their identities. There have been, and probably there will be no takers for my suggestion. Gota, Mahinda, Sajith and Sampanthan are too small minded to see the point.
I sent a shorter version of this as an email to some people with the note “The purpose of this email is to motivate you to never condone racism in Sri Lanka and not give up the fight to defeat it. There are things on which we Marxists can form alliance with liberals”. I had three responses reproduced below. (My comments are in parenthesis in italics).

Even a liberal minded Muslim may one day). This county (US) is so steeped (sic!) in religious bigotry. You have little understanding. Granted Americans are much more liberal; mainly because they are a nation of immigrants. Sri Lanka, India etc have a mainly indigenous population. On another issue: See what’s happening in France. By allowing huge Muslim immigrant population they are now taken over by them. There is no ‘French’ identity now. Police fear going into Muslim areas. I’m not criticizing any group but Europe is being taken over by the Muslims and being radicalized”.
(India is a mixed bag; its most famous Prime Minister was an avowed atheist and a Sikh has been Prime Minister. Two Tamils, several Muslims and Sikhs and a Malayali Dalit have been Presidents.

It isn’t sensible, for us as a Nation, to dig too much into the past. In much smaller units, it may be that we could quietly take pride in the achievements of some of our ancestors, but making claims that we are descended from persons who left North India more than 2,500 years ago is puerile. Also, this passing on to our progeny that they have to conform to certain hitherto accepted bloodlines should not happen. It may seem to come naturally to us, but we’ve been given brains to THINK!

When we were kid, we obviously had no Internet to get quick information. With the election results coming in, I looked at Wikipedia entries for many States in “America”. They all started off telling me which tribes dominated each area. Admire their honesty, but also, let’s be shocked at how cruelly the Natives were treated, after the founding of the United States.

We cannot undo all that. Let us resolve to ensure social justice for all citizens, starting from where we all are now.

It took USA more than 222 years since Independence to produce an African American (15% of the US population) president. SL has plenty of time!
India had Dalit and Tamil presidents but the president is only ceremonial in India. The PM calls all the shots. No Dalit or Tamil has ever become PM.
Agree about SL. But there are 2 sides to a coin. When did a Muslim become the leader of TNA? When did a Buddhist or a Hindu become the leader of SLMC? If there is no inclusion within parties, how can there be in SL!

It may be that the Senate Elections are the most unfair of all – and anomalies there are what skew the results so much that candidates who don’t win the popular vote have ended up becoming President. And then,the Sinhalese look at the names only of the smaller parties, and declare them racist. As no other country on the earth, US has proved it sofar, that there are no barriers if you are talented to achieve your goals. Europeans moved out of europe for America have succeeded their goals and dreams. This means not that the racism is no longer there, but as I see it today, it is much lower than we experience in srilanka. Alone the manner srilanken buddhist monks are placed above in the society, attack minorities publicly… but nothing seems to work against… Puiblic perception has been made in favour of sinhala fundementalists: They obviously care much less about truths. Alone that DR SAFI saga alleged to have worked on infertality of the female patients… which was a FAIRY tale to mislead the nation and harvest the votes. But media did not act adequately, so that the public would be able to differentiate the truths from the blatant lies. BMJ made it clear, no a surgeon or panelist would be able to stay pressing the falopian tubes of the patients while such surgeries are perfromed. Why not srilanken doctors come forward to clear the doubts of the masses ?????.. May be Rajakashe mafia would kill them or let dissapear.. if any govt doctors would fearlessly add their thoughts revealing the truths..

Prof Kum! You are a teacher in Engineering and as such you know the importance of using numbers to compare. What is your yardstick in assessing the extent of racism practiced by the people in each land? I know of no International Standard in this regard although there are papers published in Perceived Racism Scale. Sri Lanka elected the first woman Prime Minister and so did they elect her daughter twice as President. Does that alone qualify Sri Lanka to be described as a country as less gender primitive? Those who champion for women’s rights in Sri Lanka would answer the question with one big NO. Just because of certain electoral performances in US would it be correct to take the same view when considering the harassment of ordinary black citizens of US, especially police brutalities?, I am told that in a particular University in Sri Lanka, there was only one Tamil from the Eastern Province amongst a group of Sinhalese students in that batch of students who did not know any other language other than his mother tongue. The others helped him using even sign language. Will Prof Kum ever say Sri Lanka is less racially primitive?

This comment (No.1) points to the crux of the matter: industrialized, advanced capitalist countries are socially more progressive, despite class and racial frictions due to economic disparities. The dislocations caused by neoliberal globalism have further aggravated these tensions as we can currently witness in these societies. Yet there also prevails a countervailing force: a sense of an overarching national identity transcending narrow affiliations to ethnicity and religion. This is possible because of pluralist values and the acceptance of diversity whether based on ethnicity, religion, gender or sexuality. Though heavily industrialized, totalitarian states like Russia and China are not progressive in this regard. There is discrimination against Muslims and the LGBTQ community. So what matters is a sense of a single, shared civic identity based on participation in the democratic process. This is what we lack in Sri Lanka too – despite 90 years of electoral politics. A member of a minority community becoming the President or PM is unthinkable until we develop a civic culture leading to an overarching Sri Lankan identity. Right now we don’t have Sri Lankans in this country: we only have people who are exclusively Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays or Burghers. We have a long way to go.
