What Are We Waiting For? Lock Down Sri Lanka For 3 Weeks & Reappraise The Situation

By M.M. Janapriya

Dr. M.M. Janapriya

A new corona virus is rampaging across the length and breadth of the globe killing thousands. As of 16th March 2020, Covid-19 has infected over 174,000 people in over 100 countries and killed over 6700 patients. This was declared a pandemic on the 11th March 2020 by the WHO by virtue of its wideness and speed of spread.

Corona is a respiratory virus. It spreads by inhalation of droplets containing the virus either directly from air or by transmitting through one’s own hands by touching the virus containing areas like, guide fences, bus seats, teller machine buttons etc and touching his or her facial orifices. Once infected older and already health compromised individuals are at the highest risk of dying. Some younger ones too may succumb. THIS VIRUS KILLS. SO TAKE THE INFECTION VERY SERIOUSLY.

Despite the WHO advice about frequent hand washing, usage of alcohol gel hand sanitizers, self isolation, quarantine of people coming from infected countries etc., the virus is spreading relentlessly. Sri Lanka has over 160 suspected cases and 35 confirmed cases. We do not know how many of them have left hospital being cured and how many have died. I take no news as good news. As there are no deaths reported on National media I take it that so far no one had died of the disease. This is too good to be true all the same.

Sri Lanka got bombarded with large numbers of people from countries like South Korea and Italy. I understand some sufferers from Italy apparently have taken paracetamol and travelled over 800 miles to board a plane back to Sri Lanka from a non-affected area. Also we saw on television how difficult it was to take these people away to be quarantined.

We are a wonderful country full of ill-literate, pig headed, self-conceited individuals and know it all thugs who are impervious to reason and pay scant regard to law. Hence it is difficult to control the spread of this disease by advice example and precept. We need more stringent measures to contain the disease. This is no less than strict control of movement of individuals in addition to other advice as mentioned earlier.

A friend of mine sent the diagram below by sharing on Twitter. It is a very strong message,

The first picture shows how ineffective no restriction is. Even full quarantine as is normally done (contacts etc,) is only slightly better than non-intervention. Moderate distancing i.e. keeping away from crowds, buses, trains and supermarkets etc. has a very significant impact on reducing transmission. Just look at extensive distancing. It plateaus the curve extensively.

With all this evidence around Sri Lanka is still tinkering around the edges. Even Royal Thomian annual cricket encounter and the tamasha was allowed to go ahead. Is this sheer insanity or something else?  Motive is unclear. I only hope it is not political. Come on guys, lock down Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and reappraise at the end of it. We will see the back of corona!!!

Adrian, Not only virus infected, but Raneel chatted with Shireenthi at match there as her SB sons are Thomians. Even in hell, they will go for the last buriyani. Even if elections are forced on people, they have head option of not going. GR seems to be acting in a sensible manner.

Deadlier virus is Gotad-19. This virus kills, so take the infection very seriously. Covid-19 started in October 2019 while Gotad-19 virus started in November 2019. Covid-19 infected seven million people globally while Gotad-19 infected seven million people in Sri Lanka. Extensive distancing from Gota-19 will save the country. Common guys lock down Sri Lanka for ever and resign to your fate.

      M M Janapriya,

Thanks. What are We waiting for? Until the saffron clad imbecile monks, who got the senior monk treatment in their backs as child monks at age 7, and the Cardinals and the Ulama and the priests give the go ahead?

Lock down for three weeks and sort out the infected from the infected.Right now, the infected are spreading to the uninflected.

What do you do when the measured mean IQ of the populace is 79, and many prostrating to monks?

    • 6
      1

      M M Janapriya,

A president who tries to appease imbecile students and imbecile administrators, in a Land where the mean measured IQ is 79.

Commenting on the Royal-Thomian cricket encounter, where a First Officer of SriLankan Airlines who was found positive for the virus has attended, President Rajapaksa today said he asked the organisers not to go ahead with the cricket match.

He said a decision was taken to suspend the big match between the two schools but he allowed it to continue following the requests of the students and the school administration. “They insisted to go ahead with the match,” he said.

“The result was a virus infected First Officer of SriLankan Airlines attending the cricket encounter. Today, some of the SriLankan Airlines staff members have been asked to undergo the self-quarantine process,” he said.

“They insisted to go ahead with the match,” he said.
        .
Insisted my ass. Everyone know that GR’s word is law, he has let the nation down by allowing this match to go ahead. He has put class above country. I’m saying this as an old Royalist myself. Other nations have banned international football matches but Sri Lanka cannot ban a piddling cricket match between to overrated schools. Pathetic performance GR, we expected more of you.

          2

“Piddling cricket match between two over rated schools”. Typical outpouring due to inferiority complex of a gamaya, educated in a maha vidyalaya. This is the second oldest uninterrupted cricket match in the world. These two are the two top schools in Sri Lanka whether anyone likes it or not. GR had no option than to comply.

          • 2
            1

The two have not been the top schools for nearly half a century.
One is an overcrowded nuthouse where the principal submits to threat of transfer to an outstation school by a politician against disciplining his son. It is full of bullies and the Prefects’ Room is a den of vice. Children rely on private tuition to enter university.
The other has never been rated highly as an academic institution. It has its share of scandals, but discipline wise is perhaps better than the other.
Mahavidyalayas produced some of the greatest scholars since the 1950s.
What one has made one’s self is more important that where one was sheltered during the day.

I see you and SJ agree on some things at least.
And no, I never attended either school.

              1

Well said Vedda. I’m very pleased to agree with you. Speaking English, playing cricket, attending Royal, these are the ways that our morons measure a man’s honesty and ability.

          • 3
            1

Nonsense Gnana, read my posts. Do you find the broken English that you use?
            .
Royal is not a top school, it hasn’t been one since the Sixties. What can you expect with 8,000 pupils in two shifts? Any parent who has the means would send their son to a private English medium school rather than to Royal.

            • 2
              1

              Adrian,

They, Royal trains 8,000 imbeciles in two shifts?

May be Gota figured too many imbeciles I have to battle against, and let them have the Coronavirus-19.

The only problem is that the 8,000 imbeciles will spread across the rest of the country.

              • 1
                1

Amare do you think the infection figures are understated?

                • 1
                  0

                  Adrian,

Of course they are understated, because the testing is not comprehensive, unlike in South Korea.

Another indication is the geometric progression of the numbers reported daily.

The nature of this virus is such that somebody gets infected, will shed virus to others, fir about 7 days, until they realize they are infected.

They have to lock down for 3 weeks and sort out the infected from the uninflected. This is not a time for appeasements.

Well, the Royal-Thomian match of the imbeciles, was allowed. There are many who arrived from abroad who are at large.

      M M Janapriya,

The president GR should have imposed the ban on the imbeciles on the Thomas-Royal cricket match. There should not have been a request, by the imbeciles. One of the schools in question is the bane of our country. They have produced so many leaders, who have taken this country backwards. Not forward. This is just one MORE example, of the imbeciles, mean IQ 79, who have not yet understood, the virus.

Do the imbeciles know the difference between a virus and a bacteria?

Is the president GR trying to be popular, Jana-priya with the imbeciles, mean measured IQ 79?

      M M Janapriya,

1,200 more potential infections from abroad, They all should be quarantined for 3 weeks.

Measures are being taken in collaboration with Sri Lankan diplomatic missions in India to bring back some 1,200 Sri Lankan Buddhist pilgrims belonging to 22 tour groups, the Foreign Relations Ministry said today.

Pilgrimages will only spread to the virus.

RE: What Are We Waiting For? Lock Down Sri Lanka For 3 Weeks & Reappraise The Situation?

Waiting for Saffron clad imbecile monks to give instructions.

Despite Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Rohana Pushpakumara having requested the Buddha Sasana Ministry to suspend the annual pilgrimage to Sri Pada, the Chief incumbent of Sri Padasthana Ven. Bengamuwe Dammadinna Thera said on Monday that the pilgrimage would continue until the Vesak full Moon Day in May, as usual.

However, he said that it was up to the Budda Sasana Ministry to decide whether to suspend the pilgrimage or not.

The prelate who is also the chief incumbent of the Pelmadulla Raja Maha Vihara and the Chancellor of the Uva-Wellassa University said that Buddhists had visited the sacred mountain in the past with great sacrifices and even risking their life, without fearing natural disasters, threats from the wild animals and diseases.

“In fact many of them died of wild animal attacks and various diseases then” the Thera said.

Speaking to the media, he recalled that people in the past had visited the sacred mount, after handing over all their assets to their relatives, as they did not expect their return home.

He observed that people made these sacrifices in order to invoke the blessings of the Buddha and the God Saman and asserted that had they feared diseases or viruses such as the current coronavirus, people wouldn’t have been climbing the sacred mountain for so long.

He described Sri Pada on the peak of which Buddhist believe Buddha had left his footprint, as a place where Buddha’s supernatural power prevails.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr0Cqlf5xK4

Buddha can’t stop the virus!. Only imbeciles believe that.

Let the annual pilgrimage to Sri Pada continue. Corono virus cannot fly more than 5 feet.

        • 3
          2

          Buddha’s Amma,

The Coronavirus may not be able to fly more that 5 ft, but can float in the air for about 30 minutes, until the next victims inhale it. Some of the viruses will fall to the floor, and when the imbeciles, mean IQ 79, prostrate to the monks, will be picked up by them, to continue the transmission.

Yes. The imbeciles measured mean IQ is 79, and just because they went abroad do not change this fact.

      Are the politicians any better?

What do they do? Prostrate to imbecile monks. One imbecile monk wants to continue with the pilgrimage to the Butterfly mountain, they mislabeled Sri Pada, and others Adam’s Peak.

Other imbeciles continued with the Royal-Thomiaan cricket match, and the appeasing President, gave in.

A Land like-no other of imbeciles.

What is more dangerous for srilankens ?

      a) CORONA SARS VIRUS 2 AKA COVID-19 or
      b) MAHINDA RAJAPKASHES ‘s CRIMINAL POLITICs

I believe, the b), Mahinda Rajapakshe and his criminal gangs misled the gullible in this country for such a long time, to allow his PRINCES to allow the crown. This man, has never had .. come to the levels of philantropic nature of retired US and UK Leaders.
      :
We have people living in destitute levels across the COUNTRY but BP Rajapskhes abuse state funds in VOLUMEs fo their wellbeing. That MURDEROUS woman Shiranthi Rajapakshe is reported to be abusing over 20 vehicles if she is to move her BUM from A to B. …… See people are not blessed with FACE masks… today…. it is all like in Zimbabwian … Mugabe activities. ‘

HIs younger brother -Incumbent president of the island nation is HELPLESS…. unfortunately, Gota is under threat.. even an uneducated man, if lived decades long in the STATES or any other developed countries, he or she should have been well awre of the better systems and well disiplines… that is not a wonder…. but if they have no power to go for implementation of good systems…. what is the point of HIM being the LEADER ?

Nothing wrong with what Dr Janapriya has written.

This is a time when decisive action is needed. This is a time when we need a strong man in the hot seat. Read the riot act, and wield the whip.

As the writer says, “We are a wonderful country full of ill-literate, pig headed, self-conceited individuals and know it all thugs who are impervious to reason and pay scant regard to law.” This is the perfect time for ‘The Enforcer’ to ensure no nonsense. We are all for it.

      Spring Koha,

Mr. Janapriya: You say: ” Sri Lanka got bombarded with large numbers of people from countries like South Korea and Italy”. Is that “BOMBARDMENT” a thing to be “UNEXPECTED” or “ASHAMED” of? All those “Large Numbers” are our own “CITIZENS” and there could be many more “STRANDED” out there in many other countries. In a situation like the spread of “COVID 19” globally, and knowing very well that “Large Number” is our own citizens, shouldn’t we have , expected and planned well ahead of time to receive them in our soil? Apart from “Expectations”, really we should have made arrangements to bring them back as soon as possible. If we had such “FORWARD” thinking set of people in Authoritative positions, this mess at the Airports and the rest of the country would have been “MINIMIZED’ to a very large extent. Now having “MESSED” it up, the worst is still to put in place “PLAN OF ACTION” in an ad-hoc basis , considering what to do “Day by Day”. Is that the way a ” RESPONSIBLE” and “ACCOUNTABLE” Government should work. The WAY it is being done is totally unacceptable and irresponsible. For you information, the Prime Minister of Canada, addressed the Nation on March 16th and ASKED all the Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents to come back IMMEDIATELY. To facilitate that Four Airports in the country have been opened for International Carriers to operate. In comparison, listen to our President’s address to the Nation. He want’s a “Strong Government” of his “OWN” to fulfill his promises. Isn’t he “Performing” that “NERO”S ROLE” Please listen to it attentively and understanding the “Hidden Agenda” contained in that “Written Speech”.

Man… It is easier said than done..

They may be illiterates , But they they need to earn a quid on daily basis to feed the Missus and the Kiddies.’

They don’t have Deep Freezers, They don’t shop at Cargills.
They go to the Pola to buy Gotukola and the Keermin with a bit of Dhall..

It is the Corona Carriers from overseas who carry on like Pork chops about how hard it is now to live in Srilanka, after spending a few years in South Korea , Milano and Napoli, who need to be Locked Up and Locked Down.

Then we have the Elite , Anglican , Vellala , and Wahabi Party alliance who are already on the war path, condemning the use of Armed Forces for trying to protect the poor inhabitant population from our well off Corona Cariying Cousins who are leaving their A/C Houses and posh Bathrooms to spend the New Year with their families .

May be their families are okay with it ..
But the Government has to protect the poor innocent inhabitants ,who live in clusters around their Italian and Ottoman inspired , architectural houses.

This is where I am getting a bit confused about this Literate and illiterate business…

The government already has shut down the air port. That is a good move. Next step should be the locking down the areas like Chilaw, Wennapuwa and Negambo. Then can go for a total lock down of whole country if situation gets worse.

The President belatedly addressed the nation, with it being the second most irresponsible speech made by him after his video conference with SAARC leaders.
In the video conference he “assured” the SAARC leaders that he would go ahead with the Parliamentary Election!!!!!
In his speech to the nation, he accused those who came from overseas for reckless behaviour and spreading the virus.
I think he is childish in passing the blame to others.
Those in question were able to protest against quarantine as at the time the government has not made the quarantine compulsory.
It is now pretty obvious that the government was in sleeping mode until there was a public outcry through the media for compulsory quarantine.
According to the President, Sri Lanka has not reached the point where a countrywide lockdown is necessary.
As of today, there are 44 COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka.
According to the Army Commander, there are 2258 people in 16 quarantine centres while a large number of people who arrived from overseas dispersed in the country evading quarantine.
I wonder how many more people will be infected and quarantined, for the President to declare a countrywide lockdown.
It is common knowledge that the sooner the lockdown is in effect the better the chance to curb the spread of the disease.
In Sri Lanka people mostly use their hands to eat. As Sri Lanka is a small country, the spread of the virus is easy.
One of the Ministers says that the government is unable to offer relief to the poor as promised at the election stage.
Well, according to his President, the government is willing to WASTE 10 Billion Sri Lankan Rupees to hold the General Election, while the entire world including his own people are very concerned about the deadly Coronavirus.

I think the President and his Ministers have mixed up lockdown with curfew.
When there is a lockdown, the essential services such as healthcare, garbage collection, water and electricity supply will continue while groceries and pharmacies are also open.
The Health Minister’s response to the current situation in Sri Lanka is that a nationwide lockdown is not possible as most people engage in daily hired work.
Her response to this crisis implies that she had not considered and prepared for potential epidemics, pandemics, and other potential critical situations.
When she and the President take on their respective positions, it becomes a part of their responsibility to intervene and propose policies that promote the well-being of the citizens.
It is the President’s, Health Minister’s, and other officials’ duty to take drastic measures to ensure that Covid-19 could be contained in order to flatten the curve.
To do this, the government should allocate a budget to help those who will be impacted financially when there is a lockdown, so that people are not forced to work and jeopardize their health and the health of others.
In addition, the government should close down restaurants, but leave grocery stores, pharmacies, hospitals and garbage collection intact, as these are considered essentials.
Other countries are prioritizing the health and safety of their people, and we should, too!
Sri Lankans are looking up to government leaders for guidance and support during this difficult time, so let us not leave them stranded and helpless.
I urge the President to show the same concern to common-man too, that he showed the kith and kin or politicians whom he brought down to Sri Lanka from overseas, prior to the close down of BIA for 2 weeks.

People seeking to win an election often use emotional words to trigger voters. All party should get together and use the election fund to health care this is a tonic to the health, if not the virus is more aggressive than power, shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. Coughing in the election time is not a respiratory ailment. It is a criticism many foreigners has escaped the before screening procedure what is learnt today in the country

As the President has Rupees 10 Billion in hand (as election expenses) plus the ADB funding for a sum of USD 600,000 and pending grants, declaring a state of emergency and lockdown is all possible.
Being a Sinhalese Buddhist country blessed with indigenous medicine that goes as far as King Rawana’s reign, Sri Lankan President can take the following measures to address the issue:
    (1)Societal-wise
a)The government should come up with a relief package for non-privileged and underprivileged people through Divisional Secretariats during the lockdown.
    b)In addition to that, a business relief package should also be offered so that the private sector employees, including hotel, retail and restaurant sector, will receive their full wages;
c)Those who engage in essential services during the lockdown should be offered a risk allowance by their respective employers (eg: CMC to garbage collectors) including healthcare, grocery and pharmacy workers.
    (2).Religious-wise
As done in the town of Vishala which was plagued with a disease during Lord Buddha’s time, the Ratana Sutta should be recited in every temple as the power of this discourse is contained in the sound of words. Temples, which lack resources should be assisted by the Ministry with funds.
While so-called Buddhist leaders lag behind, responsible Buddhist priests have already started reciting this discourse in the Independence Square, Dalada Maligawa, and SriPaada..
As the only country in the world which is blessed with practicing Buddhism, Sri Lanka could offer the entire world the protection, promotion of health and aversion to illness and danger by way of chanting Ratana Sutta.
    (3.)Healthwise
As there is no cure in the Western medicine, the government should offer free hela osu and disease prevention hela medicine to curb the spread of coronavirus. One Ayurvedic Centre in a far away village has already started this.

        Old codger
Haven’t you ever heard that there is a connection between the body and the mind and that the well-being of the mind positively affects the body?
That is what a pirith chanting would do to anyone. It heals the mind so that people can recover from illnesses.
The psychological nature of one’s mind is directly related to his or her ability to fight against any disease.
The soothing effect produces by piritih can cause a deep emotion and relief in people’s minds.
I suggest a pirith noola be tied in the hand of all Sri Lankas at this time of fear and pain to give them the mental and physical strength.

        • 3
          3

          Champa dear,
Yes of course there is a connection between mind and body. I doubt even after what you smoked, your mind would have left your body.
In a spirit of scientific inquiry, please enlighten me whether your pirith nools are any heavier after chanting than they were in the grocery? If so, what is the correct pirith strength for Covid-19?
If pirith nools are so effective, why do so many devout Buddhists (including monks.) rush to Singapore for their ailments?

              Native Vedda,
I have no doubt, champa should have good customers in recent times. Those who practise the oldest…. is not easy… now his/her tone sounds to be somewhat different.
I always, stood against Champa for her blind belief in that BP Wimal Ponnawanse, but today, the very same Champa stands against Gotler ? How come. :::: may well be the new customers…
May CHAMP be blessedw ith CORONA free customers… since her soul is now changed.

              Dear Native,

This Old Kodger must have studied at St Thomas Guruthalawa and become a member of Dr Rani’s UNP Elite , Anglican , Vellala and the new addition Wahabi Faction. .
They don’t know the Rathana Sithra or the Pirith Nula, which have served the Spiritual needs of our great majority for over 2500 years.

I heard this St Thomas was a follower of that great English King Hendrick the Eigth, who had a penchant for chopping the Heads of of his Beloved wives in the London Tower..

Have you been to the London Tower , Native?..

                Dear KAS,
Is this Ratana sutra the one about glyphosate?
I wish we had a Tower to send buggers like Ratana to. Oh sorry if I hurt your feelings. Venerable buggers. BTW, since you don’t know who St. Thomas was, you are absolved of being a Thomian.

I have plenty of time to be in form

“They don’t know the Rathana Sithra or the Pirith Nula, which have served the Spiritual needs of our great majority for over 2500 years.”

Did you mean Rathana Sithra or Rathana Suthraya?
I never heard of Rathana Sithra.
You are typical Sinhala/Buddhist (a recent political identity) with no knowledge of Buddhism, Buddha’s teaching and related prayers. Neither do I expect you to have any knowledge of Buddha’s teaching nor do I believe you follow Buddhism, like your Mahanayakes.

                Excerpt from Rathana Suthraya:
                May there be happiness
By the firm determination of this truth, may all suffering cease
By the firm determination of this truth, may all fears cease
By the firm determination of this truth, may all diseases cease

“who had a penchant for chopping the Heads of of his Beloved wives in the London Tower..”

I have no idea who this king was, however it sounds like he must have taken multiple birth in this island all at the same time for example Gota, Mahinda, Chagie, Shavendra, Kamal, Fonseka, ………………. Dias, Karannagoda, ….. Pillayan, Karuna, VP, ….. Rohana, Somawansa, ….

              Leelagemalli,
You should not use uncouth language just because you can. Champa uses her real name and is a respectable grandmother. She is a caring person even though even I don’t agree with her ideas. Who are you?

See how they go foward today… BPs have not yet done their job properly regarding focusing on each and every one arrived in the country from Italy and all other highly affected countries.

          Champo,
no, you lost your face, since BP Wimal ponnawanshe became the nation’s laughting stock ..
Yet today, bp WIMAL weerawanse would have been dismemebered to the manner Jamal Khashogi faced, it, there would be masses in this counhtry to joy day long.
Wimal pnnawanse should be kept away from human assoiciation for his cesspit tohave misled the nation on and on.
The bugger is not a match with so called WIYATHMAGA led groups, but Gotler is made silent by his powerful brother repeating ” I made you a president, not you yourself, … without my support, you would not have become a president”…. now the rotiya is overoasted, so that nobody could even touch. Let balligeputhas to ruin this nation, …. not only by Covid -19

“ill-literate, pig headed, self-conceited individuals and know it all thugs who are impervious to reason and pay scant regard to law”
This aptly describes the royal-thomian idiots (some examples are Ranil, Ravi and Sajith) whose brains are covered with cowdung and who cannot think intelligently about the inherent dangers. They should think about the mental agony they are now undergoing. Virus cannot be compared to World war 1 or 2 which they claim was not enough to abandon their match. Good for them!

I am amazed that 300 persons from the China (the Covid-19 epicenter) were welcomed into the country with no quarantine. But when persons from Italy came in, they were treated so rudely, that they rebelled against the harsh words they were welcomed by. They had come back to the Motherland frightened and after a long flight. There should have been professionals to reassure them and guide them through the procedures – not sarcastic anti-colonial jack-boots.

there are learned articles on lessons from corona. first lesson is that you cannot prevent corona by saying that this is a sinhala buddhist country. all have to get together to eradicate the manance. this ;lesson for GR and G thero et al. did they utter a word about national integration and reconciliation. if they think that this country belongs only to one group of people then they could be considered as self defeating in the arrest of the epidemic.
    Dayal.
