What I Wish To See In The NPP

By Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda –

Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda

I have come to realize that without a “System Change” there is no solution to the present day crisis. The prevalent system is established not to serve the interests of the masses in our land but to serve the self-interests of the greedy politicians. Hence such a system-change can happen only if a people-friendly political party takes over the reins of power in the country by dislodging those currently wielding power.

In my view, NPP is the party which can bring about the desired change at this time of history. My preference for the NPP over other parties as the agent of anticipated change is not because that it is the best political party but because it is the party that can be trusted more than others. Furthermore, it is my wish that it becomes more people based than now for the sake of the present and even future generation in our land.

In my view, the way for NPP to become a better agent of change is by widening the space for people’s participation. The main reason why I was attracted to the NPP is not because of its capacity to capture political power but because of its vision to develop a “people’s movement” in the country. As such, what I wish to see in in the NPP is the development of more and more traits of a radical people’s movement within it.

In establishing the “Kottasa Saba” NPP has already provided a space for actualizing people’s participation in governance. However, one should not be complacent that the expected outcome will be automatically realized by mere establishment of such a structure unless steps are taken to empower those responsible for running such structures.

Such empowerment of the masses is an essential prerequisite for achieving the anticipated change. My suspicion is that the people who now rally round the NPP, would have been indoctrinated by ideologies contrary to that of the NPP unless people are ideologically conscienticized all efforts of the NPP can be counterproductive.

It is possible that such programmes for empowerment are already at work. More people will benefit if those experiences are shared with the others. There are other political groups as well which are trying to work out the concept of “People’s Councils”. Such efforts have to be appreciated because they are moving towards the same end.

Some of the activities that Kottasa Saba intends to introduce after acquiring power, can be worked out even prior to acquiring power. Let the Kottasa Sabas practice people’s power now itself to protect and conserve the resources of people, resources which the poor are already being deprived of.

Obviously, this is not an easy task. Therefore the NPP intellectuals, already at this stage, ought to intervene and empower those engaged in steering the grassroots processes.

For instance, Kottasa Saba can do a research on the natural resources available and as to what resources such as the Negombo lagoon, the sea and the coastal areas in the western province are being threatened by planned or unplanned and haphazard development activities. In such a context what is demanded of the emerging leadership is to initiate action to protect and conserve the resources available for the present and the next generation.

One of the grave challenges that every political party has is finding a solution to the national question. The major conventional parties handled the situation up to now by cooking up a story with which they hoodwinked both the Sinhalese and the Tamils.

NPP as a ‘people friendly’ party cannot follow the same path. It believes in the responsibility that has been undertaken to work for the well-being of all communities. In this regard I am aware that the NPP has already gone a long mileage. It has already visited several Tamil areas and held discussions with community representatives.

But in my view the difficult task of educating the mind of the Sinhala masses which has being polluted by the Sinhala power seeking politicians has not being sufficiently addressed.

May I suggest to the friends of NPP to engage themselves in a fruitful discussion on this matter.

    Dear Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda,
    .
Thank you very much for your assessment of the NPP which I have only just read. I was guided to it by spotting a link provided here:

    .
It so happens that I am a person who makes many comments on Colombo Telegraph, where my positive attitude towards the NPP is well known. I spotted your article a few hours ago on Colombo Telegraph. Why then did I not go in immediately? It may have seemed, from the title, to be too modestly personal. I have now read it through, and thanks.
    .
This explanation of my delay in responding is just to say this is probably the reason for others not yet having responded.

Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda: Thanks for the short but illuminative essay. I have been attracted to NPP in comparison to all other political parties that we have had enough experience in the Governing functions. For the last few decades, all politicians affiliated with those that governed and are still in “Business”, have proved more than efficient to be of “Political Trickery”; lack of “Substance”; “Cowardice” resulting in failure to “Deliver” what was “Promised” and to meet the “Expectations” of the people.

As you have briefly stated, NPP has become a “Peoples’ Movement” and no doubt it has to still further develop into a “Force” of “Check and Balance” entity. I think that “Structure” at the grass root level of “Kottasa Saba” is a welcome move and hopefully it will become a “Driving Force”.

As regards “Operational” aspects, NPP has already acquired power in most of the “Co-Operative Societies” at village levels. It is heartening to see those organizations that have started operations are showing their performance well (devoid of “Corruption”) in a people-friendly manner. It is up to NPP to give adequate “Publicity” to these “Achievements”, so that their “MISSION” will install “Trust” and “Confidence” in the minds of the general public. Unfortunately, this has not received the attention of the NPP yet.

continued: It is very important to place before the people more of NPP’s “Economic Policies and Strategies” at this moment. This subject, in my opinion, has not been adequately and properly addressed so far. The NPP speaks of “S & M Entrepreneurship” as the main “Engine” of the economic propulsion under their administration. No doubt they explained this adequately at a “Seminar” held in Colombo. But, the “Message” has not gone across the country at large viz. to District and village levels. This is what I got after speaking to some of those “Small” entrepreneurs at local levels.

Another fact to be pointed out is NPP’s dismal failure to “EVOKE” peoples’ “ENTHUSIASM” in the “NEED to get involved in the Governing Functions. No doubt, all speakers at the mass meetings make “Eloquent” and “Firey” speeches and we find a very attentive audience. But do any of the speakers, after giving all the “Information” ask the audience to “GO HOME and THINK” of what has HAPPENED to them all these years? Do the speakers “PROPEL” the audience to “ACTION” to CORRECT the course to a BETTER FUTURE for them and the generations to come? That CALL must be very much LOUD AND CLEAR more than the information they fire out. What is happening now is “SABA THOMO SATHUTIN VISIRA GIYAYA”. (the meeting ended on a happy note).

Seems that I am in the sceptic minority, while most, apparently, have come to the conclusion that NPP are the saviours, having lost faith in other mainstream parties. In fact, I wonder the reasons for Fr. Iddamalgoda to decide the NPP as ”…the party that can be trusted…”. Didn’t we trust other parties in the past based on the rhetoric?
We have ‘palath saba, pradeshiya saba, gramasevaka Kottasa’, etc etc, so what is to say that ‘Kottasa Saba’ will work better? What happened to ‘gam udawa’, GR’s ‘talk with the villagers’?, Isn’t this another such exercise? Why not make it simple & reduce all the bureaucracy? In UK, there is the constituency MP & the County Councils which controls the police, bus service, fire brigade, license taxis & responsible for all public services in the County & each town has a mayor at town level. I am at a loss to understand all these govt. offices in SL which only seem to be adding unnecessary bureaucracy

The priority is economic growth, so, what is the NPP strategy? How is the development funded? I would like to see the NPP ‘shadow cabinet’, the names & their qualifications. That way, I will know if the NPP intellectuals are any better than the Viyathmaga bunch & what to expect.

Raj-UK: Please do a little more analytical study on the “Political Culture” of both the “Central and Provincial” Governance of Sri Lanka

For your information, those “Kottasa Sabas” are not an entity of the Local Government system. Those are purely political organizations of volunteers set up by the NPP. Same as their “District and Central” Committees. All members are “Volunteers”.

Also, please don’t mix apples with oranges.

The world has changed and keeps changing since the dawn of civilisation
and countries are changing at different levels , at different times and
according to different capacities . In our recent history , JRJ took us on a
journey to catch up with the economies of the rest of the world while
maintaining a position of Non Aligned of which India too was a member at
the time . Publicly we were non-aligned and in private pro – West ! So was
India , publicly non – aligned and in private pro-Soviet (at the time). Now let
us come to the point ! JVP / NPP on one side and all colours of traditional
politics on the other side ( according to JVP/NPP itself ) . They are shying to
talk about Socialism themselves in public , if system change is their main
target , they must explain it Black and White and face the Real Music ,
meaning , Ranil & Co mustered its courage to exhibit who they are standing
with . No point in wasting time on corruption , dynasty , nepotism etc, etc
because Ranil knows how far REASON can travel with conscious minds .
The best example is , yes good crowds , very good speakers but how much
determined and organised the crowd is ? Look at the faces of the crowd and
the sound of Enthusiasm ! 75 % or more of the crowd , neither determined
nor organised . This is quite a message in my take .

I wonder what “leelagemalli” makes of NV’s video which shows Mahinda Rajapaksa as once more King of Lanka.
        .
LM’s emotional responses have so little to do with Logic and reason that he will rejoice. If he at least lives in Sri Lanka, his clowning would be acceptable.
        .
He is full of praise for people like Ali Sabri (who has been placed in a corner). The video is only two minutes, please see it.

If civilization is to continue in even the most pathetic way, we must ensure that it is not the Law of the Jungle that survives.
        .
It is not now the “strongest” who will survive, but the most cunning, secretive and vile.
        .
Is LM vile? No. It’s just that he lacks the intelligence to see where he is heading. All decent citizens must awake! If you don’t, we become no better than other animals.

          Dear S M ,

cunning little kitten about the video . Kattankudy is one of
his favoured locations to holidaying ! !

    N V ,

I believe I have already cleared your doubt in my comment but within a limited
space . My first three lines speak little but volumes , saving time and energy .
Let us look at it this way , take for example a hospital in the UK and Srilanka !
In the UK , you have a hospital appointment , you get to the relevant department ,
report to the reception of your presence and you are requested to take a seat and
wait for your turn . What happens next ? Your GP comes TO YOU and Guides You
Through To His Treatment Room . Now let us match the situation to our God
GPs ! They won’t budge an inch from their seat ! You will be taken to their feet !
This is what I simply meant by ” different levels and different capacities . ” I was
mindful not to say ” different Shameful levels and Shameful capacities .” We are
a country full of Gods . Your video link , some of the photos were already on
social media but thank you for your link . Please note , I never tried to focus on
the Quality of Moral Excellence of Any of Our Leaders ! You will never find it
anywhere in the country ! All my comments and replies to comments are based
    on that understanding .
