Who Can Fathom The Mangala Sutraya?

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“The very punchent and plucky cyber news site, Lanka E News, that has stupidly been banned in the island by a stupid President, says that that destruction of Ranil Wickremesinghe is being done on the lines of a Mangala Sutra”

Kid’s Adventure

Try to find the hidden. This is like a kid’s mystery-finding adventure. Is it merely the attempt by some younger ministers to get to the top quicker, coming under the wing of a leader closer to them in age? Is it the frustration on the part of some plotters who  have been obstructed in an attempt to make ill-gotten money? There are rumours about one of these ministers having had mysterious money come into a private account from Saudi Arabia. Is it a surreptitious operation of some of those of the former regime who have been dodging court in great style? And, of course, one cannot miss the old allegation about Mr Maharajah paying others to eradicate Ranil Wickremesinghe. To be sure, one never knows; maybe one day we will know. Hope that day of enlightenment isn’t too long away. In terms of the country, it is important to know.

Achievements

In a recent piece of mine, I viewed  this current episode as the final blow of the counter revolutionary forces. Despite unanticipated tribulations and the absence of  parliamentary numbers Ranil Wickremesinghe and his team has achieved a lot toward the yahapalanaya promise in the revolution that took place in 2015. It is plain mean to deny all that. The government is  also unmistakably on the path of bringing in the desired structural change in our economy from an import – dependent one to an export – oriented one. Goodwill among the global leaders had been restored and with that came a gradual removal of barriers to our exports like GSP Plus and fish exports. Our tourism and economy began looking up despite the debt backlog. Tourism boomed until the Easter attack.

Wickremesinghe’s Values

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s embedded values of secularism, anti-racism, genuine reconciliation and modernism had been playing out very well in the political landscape of our island. As a personage this man may be foxy; but that is a requirement for leadership in politics. However, have you ever observed Ranil exhibiting hate toward even his political opponents? To President Sirisena who has openly vilified Wickremesinghe? Even to the ones inside the UNP who are hell-bent on ousting him? Honestly, I am not exhibiting an emotional affinity to Wickremesinghe. I am writing out of observed empirical events. It doesn’t matter what we say so long as what we say is thus substantiated by empirical fact. Conversely, any accusation not borne out of evidence must be dismissed. Ranil Wickremesinghe is a good and humane leader- a man of class and calibre who must be protected from the dirty plotters around him. He stands as one of the few dying remnants of leaders above the mass of crude and greedy parliamentarians that Sri Lanka has, unfortunately, had to bear. You shove him away, and you only encourage the evil men and women to overwhelm our parliament. Bad money has a way of putting out  the good.

Shoving Away

Well, this shoving away is what seems taking place within the ranks of the very party that Wickremesinghe had shielded and led to victory after about two decades of debilitating years for the Grand Old Party. The laughable irony is that his internal critics keep telling us, hypocritically, that for many years Wickremesinghe could only be in Opposition. The very punchent cyber news site, Lanka E News, that has stupidly been banned by in the island by a stupid President, says that that destruction of Ranil Wickremesinghe is being done on the lines of a  Mangala Sutra. The reference is to Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera. Mangala has shown a strong penchant to be a King -maker and now he is busy trying to make Sajth Premadasa king. Mangala should be ashamed to remain in his vital portfolio while plotting all the while against the Prime Minister. So, should the other plotters like Harsha De Silva, Eran Wickremaratne and the Sajith adulant, Ajith Perera. These guys seem to be busy all day doing what they should not do and avoiding their ministerial duties. Only Sri Lanka can tolerate this state of affairs. Ranil, for one, is biding his time until these nincompoops piss out with the wearing away of time.

Sajith – an Instrument

Sajith Premadasa  is only the instrument of these conspirators. Sajith should realize that one day, given he is is in power, such conspiracies can assail him as well. Why I say Sajith is an instrument is because the Minister of Housing has not achieved anything out of the ordinary all through his years of being a minister. For one thing, Sajith has been stuck to a narrow tunnel area, which is the Ministry of Housing. He hasn’t, consequently, had the opportunity of learning and demonstrating any skills in navigating the vicissitudes of choice -making. In a tunnel there are no choices; but only a given straight-jacket to move on. Here, at housing ,what has he to do? Get treasury money allocated and off he goes getting a contractor to build. No government in the world has made a dent in housing this way. The young minister is even disregarding the fact that with a growing population and limited available land, building single-story units is ill-advised. Besides, it all means a serious opportunity – cost in more crucial areas like health, education and

infrastructure.

Patali Champika Ranawaka

As a contrast Sajith just seem what Patali Champika Ranawaka is doing in his Ministry of Megapolis. Patali also building houses but his model isn’t a drain on the treasury or economy. There is a return in the way of repayment. Patali has now set out on using our old canal systems in Colombo to improve public transport. This project will also contribute to tourism. During Dutch times these canals had been built just for transport and cargo. The kind of work Patali does entails knotty decisions and skills of optimisation. While Gota merely decorated Colombo, Patali is adding to the nations’s worth.

On the other hand Sajith is focused on populistic measures like building 1135 Chaityas and Daham Paasalas. These constitute the old style politics of yesteryear that are inimical to our economy. Prompted by Dr Harsha, Sajith now talks of Keynesian economics. Even the Wickremesinghe government uses Keynesian economics when appropriate.

Is Youth an Issue?

Of course Sajith Premadasa is young. But Ranil Wickremesinghe is 70 years and younger than Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mahathir Muhammed built Malaysia when he was in his early seventies. Ranil Wickremesinghe still has a lot to contribute to our economy and society. His vast experience, his global contacts, goodwill among all communities, his strong focus on the economy- are all very important. Much development has already been achieved during the last four years by way of his Gamperliya  and Private Enterprise Sri Lanka. Ranil’s attempt to energise the length and breadth of the island with the spirit of entrepreneurship is a step in the right direction.

Conclusion

With more numbers in parliament and another term, Ranil Wickremesinghe will deliver. Sajith Premadasa should extend  his learning -time a little longer and assist the leader to modernise and prosperous Lanka. Developing the economy is the precondition to the our society’s survival; its neglect will harbour unbelievable calamity and dysfunction in all areas of  social life.

Shymon you are not in this world .

Who was behind the Turkish Barge power project scandal ? Not poor Ravi K, although he is a rogue too.

It is a Mahendran 11( not the real Mahendran ) but close enough, a man living mostly at Cinnamon Lake Hotel , and a guy who was a desperate student at Royal College now a millionaire and number one racketeer and a guy who uses Royal college sports connections 24 hours a day !

He and your Ranil share some deep secrets . Find out Shymon from Australia ? Know the truth and the truth shall set you free from all illusions !

      Kolla,
Shyamon certainly has facts with him & it is very clear that he is defending (covering up) those facts. In any case, what will he do once everybody in the party come to an agreement to support Sajith, the eventual decision? Will he follow TNL to support GoRa? By the way, who is running TNL; is it Shan or his daughter Ishimi? What is the difference between one family dynasty (Ra..kse) over another (Wijewardena + Wickramasinhe)? I think that it is these family “parasites” that provide reasons for Marxists to exist!

“Ranil Wickremesinghe’s embedded values of secularism, anti-racism, genuine reconciliation and modernism had been playing out very well in the political landscape of our island. “
    \
May be, but his inability to make even slight improvement of the economy makes him a ‘lame duck’. The man is incapable of creative thought and action, by birth. He can’t help it.
Now that he is hitting 70 years of age (with nearly 45 in politics), it is high time he retired and gave someone else a chance to show their colours.
    \
But Sajith P hasn’t got the brains either, other than preaching his mad father’s name.

mangala has always backed the winning horse. He loves ranil, but does not want to back a loser.Shyamn must understand the ground reality.Ranil has no chance against gota.It is sajit or gota.which does shyamon want.Come out into the open and tell us out of the two whom you prefer.

ps.It is a well known fact that some sort of deal is being made by ranil with gota.If not why did he go and meet gota.So shyamon wants gota to become the president.so he keeps on attacking sajit.

      Shanka,
The rumors that Ranil has intervened to help GoRa to renew SL visa has not proved yet, but, considering the way Immigration Dpt operate, I doubt GoRa had to go that far to get visa. The system is so corrupt that anybody with a few Rs 5000 bills can get it done. Person like GoRa doesn’t even need that; one T call would have done it!

However, I also believe that UNP certainly would have been delighted with the prospect of GoRa’s candidacy b’cos it fitted with their plan perfectly: To offer ticket to the presidency to one of the alliance member – Rajitha or Patalee – and to keep the PM post with Ranil while the elite group maintaining the power of the UNP. UNP elite is now very angry b’cos with Sajith, the elite group is facing the threat of losing their grip over the party along with many “privileges” – material as well as symbolic – associated with it.

Shyamon knows this perfectly well but he is contributing intentionally to the “lie” that Sajith is threatening Ranil. I certainly don’t deny the factuality of the two paragraphs titled “Achievements” & “Wickramasinhe’s Value”. I myself hold the same opinion. What is wrong is Shyamon’s effort fool the public that Sajith is threatening Ranil’s contribution to the next UNP Gvt. Even a child could see that this is a meaningless claim b’cos, under 19 A PM’s position will enhance; not decreased.

        D.P
        Rajitha or Patalee

both have got no chance against gota. Ranil went and met gota first in singapore.

ps.i agree with you after the 19th amendment it is a entirely new ball game.I’am only worried that the country is going to have 2 leaders with more or less equal power.

Hello Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe: You want to know who can fathom the Mangala Sutraya? Of all the “Leaders”, one and the only one who “Fathomed” it best and took steps to “AVOID” those teachings is your “Hero” Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe. A few instances of those steps: (1) “Asevanacha Balanan”. He knew that teaching doesn’t work. So took Gonawal Sunil – the notorious thug and a criminal into his bed and made him a “Close Associate” who ultimately ran the affairs of the entire Education Ministry. Can you deny that? (2) You referred to “GSP +” Please refer to Hansard . When your “Hero” was questioned to give a direct answer to: “Did you or not discuss with EU officials in removing the GSP+ to Sri Lanka”. What was the answer? Here it is: “What is wrong in doing that”? Consequently, more than 200 garment factories were close and thousands lost the livelihood.(3) “Batalanda” affair. Did you get a chance to read that “Report”? If you did or know the facts, you will remove your “Amude” (span clothe) to cover your face. (4) The latest: “The Bond Scam” operated through his “Buddy” – Arjuna Mahendran. Now, it is reported how the accused Alloysious walked into the residence of your “Hero” with a bag full of millions. That “News Agency” is in possession of credible evidence. So far RW has not refuted the report. (5) The Latest: The loss of Rs. 1.2 Billion from the Central Cultural Fund that is managed by a “Board of Governance”. Did you know that your “Hero” is in that “Board of Governance? Yes he is. Twelve Accounts of that “Fund” operated through a bank in Kollupitiya have been “Closed”. Why? Who? Isn’t your “Hero” answerable to the “LOSS” of that Rs. 1.2 Billion? Now he wants to “Shift” that responsibility to his rival “Sajith Premadasa.

I hear, Mangala also has understood that he is caught in the net of his Handler. On the other hand, Sajith Pemadasa thinks they both what indirectly say is they are Suitable Prime minister prospects. Maalik Samarawicrama is saying he feels like quitting because everyone is a party leader and everyone is a Party Secretary. Sumanthiran says he is hanging to Ranil because, Ranil would give him the party Leadership. He also thinks, how does his handler handles all these.

All this Hullabaloo happening around is leaving the ardent UNP supporters confused and in a right royal fix. The party hierarchy should iron out these internal differences fast. I for myself am confused too. If Ranil steps forward and all the others rally around him there is a strong chance that with the majority minority vote he could be a winner and be our next President.

It is very doubtful that Gota could muster the Tamil and Muslim votes. They are definitely not going to vote for Gota and if they do it would be disaster for all of them and they know it. The UNP should be concentrating on defeating Gota and bringing his false nationalistic and patriotic vitriol to the fore and educate the voters.

Gota has to be defeated at any cost and it would not be difficult if the Tamil and Muslims votes are denied to him.The UNP has always been seen as a moderately thinking entity and that should hold it in good stead. Gota and the SLPP have shown over the years that they are communistic and divisive. The creation of the BBS was the brainchild of Gota and Gnanasara thero was just a pawn in the game.

To think how a retired Lt. Col with a few dollars in hand and working in a supermarket in the US could now be travelling around the globe either first class or in a suite is just food for thought. There are still gullible voters in our country and it is the task of the UNP rank and file to bring these to the fore on every election platform when the time comes.

Who Can Fathom The Mangala Sutraya? CERTAINLY MANGALA CAN.

      Thondamany….

It seems you are one of those gullible voters we have in our country. The Rajapakse family had to sell Five coconut trees in their garden to fund the third month alms giving of the late Rajapakse patriarch.(Please read about this in the archives of the Sunday Leader for such disclosures, MIG deals and others its Editor Lasantha was murdered).

That was their financial status at that time. Hats off to the late D.H Rajapakse who was in politics along with the late SWRD but did not rob a cent from the national coffers. The same cannot be said of his offspring.

For you to read that Gota was stacking goods onto a supermarket shelf in the US would be hard to digest but that is the fact. I know there is no dignity in labor especially in the US, but for someone who did such a chore to be having millions of dollars to spend today…. is indeed FOOD FOR THOUGHT… my friend.

The gist of writer’s article is in his conclusion where he wishes another parliamentary majority for Ranil with an enhancement to deliver. Can the writer tell us what exactly will he deliver at the end of next Parliament to be elected and towards that end what has he done up to now since 2015 January? Ranil may be “learned” and full of “strategies”, but in actual fact has he reached the people in solving the problems of the populace with a steady progress felt by the ordinary folks? The dwindling value of the Sri Lankan Rupee with respect to other currencies is sore point that Ranil has not been able to arrest during the first term and in fact it has exacerbated . The writer implicitly recommends another term as Prime Minister for Ranil which follows that he cannot be the candidate for the Presidency from the UNP in 2020. Further, when he recommends that Sajith should extend his learning time then he too cannot be the Presidential candidate for the UNP for the same election. Whoever who says and takes the liberty to quote such saying describing the tricks of Mangala Samaraweera as Mangala Sutraya is an abomination. This reference is utterly insensitive and I appeal to the writer to be more sensitive to the sentiments of the population in Sri Lanka. May I ask the writer will the people of Australia, his adopted land, tolerate any form of denigration of religious leaders or teaching of the majority population? These countries while talking of free speech on one hand will prohibit hate speech and in my humble opinion mentioning a Mangala Sutraya out of context, especially linking to a mod minister, amounts to hate and/or inflammatory speech.

the problem with naaki ranil is that he has no place for young people
most of his supporters are naakiyas like himself
the problem is that he is not a winnable candidate as he has no support outside colombo
mangala a wellknown election strategist knows this and that is why he shifted to sajith
the same applies to the younger members who are now supporting sajith they all know that ranil is a loser and losers cant implement the forward looking policies he talks about
for 4 years all he has done is to make promises of what he intends to do in the future but can he do it after he loses the election which is a foregone conclusion
the new fox is a poor imitation of the old fox

Is Dr Ranil waiting till the 11th Hour to finish off Keselwatta Kid who has hijacked the UNP Presidential Candidate Gig?..

I don’t mean that Dr Ranil is planning anything like what his mates did to finish off the Senior..
But I am wondering whether Dr Ranil will surprise everyone by declaring himself as the UNP Candidate. which Dr Ranil has never done before.
That will not only finish off Keselwatta Kid , but also the whole Hog of the PhD Intelligentsia of Dr Ranil’s UNP, which has f******* up the country Big Time..

I don’t know about all those good deeds of Dr Ranil which Mr Shaymon Jayasinghe has listed for the benefit of the members of the Elite , Anglican , Vellala and the new Wahabi Faction.
My Elite mates in CMB who drive Hybrids and sign Hymms at the Dollar Churches in Colombo even curse Dr Ranil for putting their beloved UNP in the current pathetic situation where dog eats dog and wash their dirty linen in the Public.
Which I think do not meet the Etiquette of the Senananayaka UNP..

And insult their own mates who shared the loot in stolen EPF Funds and Free Car Permits.

Wonder what happened to that purebred Colombo Elite Colt who was the UNP Pin Up Boy in Colombo Central.
He is the only honest UNP MP as far as I am concerned .
Because young Sujeeva was game enough to admit that he sold his Yahapalana Car Permit to a Muslim for 34 Million .
And also collected another 3 Million from PT Boss Aloysious for writing that Book on Yahapalana Bond Trading to educate even those PHD Intellectuals whom Mr Jayasinghr has named in the UNP.

Although, all that in LKR , It is still a heck of a lot of Dosh for a country where the Average Joe earns 20, 000 Ruppiah a month.
And most of the Janes are on Dr Ranil’s Samurdhi Dole..

The infighting in the UNP is unprecedented.  Sajith, Mangala, Kabir Hassim and many others are drawing their knives for Ranil’s throat. Party discipline has been thrown to the winds. Saith is stupid when he claims he is the presidential candidate come sun or rain. Such stupidity will come back to haunt him if by any chance he becomes the Party leader. In this respect hats off to Karu Jayasuriya who has declared in public he will only contest for the post of President if the party decides to nominate him,

Sajith and Mangala little realise that the infighting within the UNP will help neither Sajith or Ranil. It will only help to damage the UNP.

All the Sinhalese politicians are greedy and corrupt, relatively speaking Ranil is above board. I agree with  Shyamon that Ranil cherishes  “values of secularism, anti-racism, genuine reconciliation and modernism…..”The Bond scam took place of Ranil’s poor judgement. Mahendran let him down. He exploited his closeness to Ranil to help his son-in-law Arjun Aloysius.

Ranil is not sensitive to the plight of ordinary citizens. Issue of duty-free vehicle licenses to MPs (225)  and Provincial Council Ministers (455)  was a costly mistake. It drained the Treasury to the bones.  MPs from both sides of the Parliament enriched themselves in selling the permits issued to them. This diminished the image of Ranil as a sensible politician. Another blunder he made was to double the number of members in local bodies to 8,356 from 4,486 again a drain on the Treasury. The cost of maintaining this staggering figure is 3.1 billion compared to 1.billion earlier.

Despite the fact that Ranil is the leader of the UNP for 25 years,  some seniors in the party, including Chairman of the UNP  Kabir Kassam as well heavy-weights like Mangala are openly supporting  Sajith does not speak well of his leadership.

How do you know Ranil doesn’t want to contest the presidential elections? Do you have a direct line to his kitchen?

You should be worrying about an American contesting the forthcoming elections. Are you sure the election commissioner has the right kind of b***s to stop the American?

By the way the American has advised the Election Commissioner to turn a blind eye on frauds being committed during the 2005 Elections by him and his family. The American ordered the Commissioner “Let it Go”.

As you desired, now you have an opportunity to elect a ballot rigging Assgiria blessed American as the next Sinhala/Buddhist Fascist president. Start practicing the Hitlergruß (Hitler Salute), Heil, mein Führer! (Hail, my leader!), …..

    Shyamon ,

It is ridiculous to cover up Ranil and expose Sajith while both have collective
responsibility towards the country . I’m not in favour of any of these candidates
because non can do anything to get the country out of the mess of 71 years !
Do you know what scientists say about where in your body you got more bacteria
when it comes to between your mouth and the wind pipe ? It is your mouth !
Sorry Shyamon , not to hurt you but the truth ! The only luck for Ranil is , he won’t
open his mouth much . I don’t disagree that he is a reasonably talented man with
good qualities but he has to swim in the same one time old Beira which is now
put to good use . I fully agree with you about Sajith’s Housing mania .
