Who Cares About The People?

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

“We the People”, is a unique preamble of US constitution where people are mentioned in the first person. Although it has no innate or legal connotation, those three words express a fundamental truth, i.e., every act undertaken by the government in power, whether in terms of the constitution or otherwise, and the very existence of the government in power, implies that they are at the mercy of the people. Whereas, the svasti of Sri Lanka’s 1977 constitution, mentions people in the third person. “The people of Sri Lanka … having entrusted to and empowered their representatives …”, it goes on. This relegation of the people to third place is reflected in the ongoing tug of wars, one between the government and the opposition and the other between the latter and Presidency. The two wars have completely ignored the immediate interest of the people, which is primarily economic.

Aragalaya, as articulated by an awakened young generation of all ethnic, linguistic and religious groups, represents the united voice of the people. It condemns wholesale the entire family of parliamentarians, who, while enjoying the salaries, perks and privileges given to them by tax payers and occupying the legislature for more than two years, ended up bankrupting the country and brought unbearable sufferance to those who empowered them. The people are now occupying the streets and maidans and calling “Gota Go Home” and “No 225 in Parliament”, are blaming all of them and demanding a systemic change. It is more than two weeks since the Galle Face Green became the epicentre of aragalaya. Already one life had been lost in Rambukkana, but otherwise it had remained relatively peaceful. But for how long?

The longer the political instability continues, harder and costly would become solutions to the economic woos. The President has finally admitted that the approach to IMF should have been made much earlier. Even then, the economic situation had deteriorated so rapidly since that belated meeting with that institution, it is doubtful whether its assistance alone would be sufficient to reverse the decline. Tightening monetary policy to keep inflation in check, increasing direct taxes to repair government budget, and introducing flexible exchange rates to check currency speculation and blackmarket operations are necessary but not sufficient. Those measures were recommended by local economic experts long before IMF came into the scene. Those recommendations were totally ignored by an obscurantist President and an inept government. An inbuilt aversion towards expert knowledge, rational thought and demonstrated truths had been a constant trait of the GR-MR dyarchy.

Finance Minister Ali Sabry seems to be upbeat and expressed confidence of “soaring support” for Sri Lanka’s struggle. In the meantime, China has reservations about restructuring its $2.1 billion debt in accordance with IMF’s plan. But IMF’s assistance for bail out is dependent on that restructuring. In other words, the government’s economic revival strategy is running into difficulties because of its bungled foreign policies. From information available in social media, it appears that the dyarchy is being pulled part in opposite directions by India and China. In sum, the inconclusive political tug of wars, delay in IMF bailout and foreign policy difficulties are combining to exacerbate the sufferance of the people. Does anyone care about them?

Economic recovery requires more than US dollars. Influx of foreign currency may help easing the current shortages in consumer essentials. But long-term recovery requires much more fundamental changes in what the country produces how it produces and where does it sell them. Apart from the three measures recommended by IMF, a long-term economic plan with intermediate targets is absolutely essential. Such a plan and targets would obviously mean structural changes in the economy. Aragalaya’s demand for systemic change cannot be accomplished without that structural change.

To draw up such a plan and implement it requires a government founded on principles of meritocracy, pragmatism and honesty. These were not qualities that ruled governments in the past and they are in serious deficit at present. Hence, aragalaya demands a fundamental and wholesale change in the art of governing the country. Instead, the wheeling and dealing that is currently going on between the opposition and government, and within each of them in turn, makes one to suspect whether the cause of the uprising is going to be betrayed and status quo would prevail at the end. With such an outcome economic recovery would be long way off and people would continue to suffer.

What would be the fate of aragalaya then? Would it shift to another level with more direct action and different tenor? The President is basically a soldier in civilian garb and he and his family patriarch, the Prime Minister, are Sinhala Buddhist nationalists supported by elements from within the religious hierarchy. The clan has too much to lose by surrendering to the demands of protestors. How will the confrontation end? That is the sixty-four thousand dollars question.

In SL, the Tamil speaking citizens started their “Aragalaya” more than 60 years ago. In a multi lingual multi religious society trying to suppress the minorities by Sinhala Buddhist Nationalists started the process of downward spiral. In order to come out of the severe economic depression, we need the minorities to feel secure in SL. Using the Army and the violent Buddhist Monks to make Tamils’ life terrible.
Stop these actions in north and east of SL asap

            I know what you mean.

The problem is that they don’t seem to limit their traditional activities to such as spiritualism, practicing local Ayurvedic medicine, parting Buddha’s authentic teaching, …… not politics. According to South Indian myth oral tradition Buddhism lost its role influence in that society because the monks tried to wield enormous control over the kings.

They must not be seen taking side one way or another. That is my humble opinion.

The racism practised by the yellow pets has been tolerated and encouraged. The racism practised by the the Tamils was also allowed by the politicians of both ethnic groups and used to get votes. Does anybody have the guts to do what Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore did. He locked up without trial all such groups. If that was done in Sri Lanka things would have been far different to current mess. Language issues should also not be tolerated. If Ceylon had done what Singapore did we would have reached amazing heights. Instead we did the exact opposite. SO what needs to change? Bring back Ceylon a secular nation no Buddhist mumbo jumbo if the yellow pets object throw them in jail no trial any body else want to join them they are welcome. Even a mahanayake should not escape. Bring back English education and make it the sole official language in government and the universities. If anyone objects they can go sit in a jail cell for the rest of their lives. That is how Singapore became what it is and Ceylon ended up a renamed beggar island.

Sorry, Thamizh never practiced racism, they were only fighting for their just rights and to safeguard their ancient homeland from sate sponsored Chingkalla racism and Islamic opportunism and extremism. These are the two main causes for the country deteriorating. Have you ever heard of any mainstream Thamizh politician advocating the marginalization of the island’s Chingkallams and Muslims? They have never. However, the Chingkallams and Muslim politicians do, especially of Thamizh. It was a Muslim politician under the Srimavo regime who introduced standardization to deliberately deny Thamizh youth higher education and it was during this era, that the marginalization of Thamizh in the Trincomalee and Amapari districts began in earnest. We all know how the behaviour of many Muslim politicians towards the Thamizh in the east and Mannar, only came to an end after the Easter bombing. The irony is that 99% of the Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors as they love to call themselves, are South Indian origin ethnic immigrant Thamizh converts to Islam but now in the name of their religion are denying this fact and indulging in anti-Thamizh activities.

Totally true. The Sinhala chauvinist ideology is inherently obscurantist. From its belief in a supposedly glorious past as per the Mahavamsa, ignoring the fact of technological and cultural stagnation, to persistent obeisance in the present day to ignorant clergy, astrologers, witch doctors, and politicians, its adherents are intellectual pygmies, as demonstrated by the Viyathmaga gang who advised the President.
Now that it is necessary to talk to the IMF, it is indeed ironic that only a Muslim and two ex-Yahapalanaya administrators can be trusted. I wonder why the President didn’t use CA Chandraprema and Channa Jayasumana, his preferred agents in Geneva?

      Naman,
“In SL, the Tamil speaking citizens started their “Aragalaya” more than 60 years ago.”

You are wrong. Racist Tamil politicians started their separatist ‘Aragalaya’ in 1920s while Sinhale was ruled by British and they smuggled arms from India to fight against indigenous Sinhalayo.
If Tamils do not feel secure in Sinhale, how the hell Tamil population in Colombo keep on increasing? Dalit Tamils in Yapanaya feel more secure living amongst Sinhalayo than living in Yapanaya where they are ill-treated by V Tamils. Even when the war was going on your politicians felt secure living amongst Sinhalayo in Colombo with their families.

Please do not tarnish the image of Sinhala Buddhists who accommodated Stateless Tamils in their country and gave them citizenship with same rights enjoyed by indigenous Sinhalayo.

Whenever or why ever it started, it ended at the bottom of a lagoon. All that’s left is “Tamil Eelam” clothing on Amazon and defunct LTTE propaganda websites. The big mistake, as I told terror supporters on CT, was the use of suicide bombers. You cannot strap C-4 to the bum and convince sane people there is any merit to the fake freedom struggle. It looks like even the main propaganda outfit, tamilnet.com, finally gave up.

When RAKSHAspakses FALL OUT honest men (EELAM Tamils) get their dues. News article:

Now Prime Minister Mahinda wants the president’s wings clipped and his own power enhanced. Hence, his interest in bringing back 19A with “certain amendments.”

Incidentally, Mahinda’s call for clipping the powers of the presidency came a day after a rift with his younger brother came out in the open.

Apparently, there were differences between the two on the appointments to the new cabinet. Gotabaya’s preferences were reportedly not to Mahinda’s liking. Since the president’s choices prevailed, the miffed prime minister stayed away from the swearing-in of the new cabinet ministers. The following day, Mahinda recommended the revival of 19A.

The rift between the two brothers has only widened since.
While the Rajapaksa brothers are busy sniping at each other, their hold over power is weakening.

Did M A Sumanthiran, R Sampanthan or the Yahapalanaya new constitution proposed authored with their collaboration by parliament select committee envisage a ”United, Undivided Sri Lanka”, in the preamble and thereon??!!
So what seems the problem or issue??
Unless, the future SL governments start “tinkering’ around the basic law, like in 1970,
        1. Removing the section 29,
        2. The Upper House – Senate and
        3. Remove the right to appeal to Privy Council – to implement their “STYLE of HOME GROWN” justice, which no doubt has failed!!!
Hopefully they have learnt the hard lesson and may be ‘hopefully’ no repetition!!!
In that case, there need not be any fears AS LONG AS ALL ARE EQUAL CITIZENS – MUSLIMS, SINHALESE, TAMILS, BURGHERS, MALAYS, INDIANS, SINDHIS, PARSIS, MOORS ET ALL!!!

We haven’t heard even a murmur from Mao’s b***s carriers. I wonder why?

Does Mao’s b***s hide everything wrong with Siri Mao’s policies?

It was known from last year the country is on deteriorated state all those who call expert in politics did not know any solution Visionary people face the same problems everyone else faces; but rather than get paralyzed by their problems, visionaries immediately commit themselves to finding a solution
none had that creating recovery founded principles

I agree about visionaries in general.
But which visionary do you have in mind here?
      Hallucination is not vision.

      Hi RBH59,
“Golden statement” likened to, ‘Bolting the Stable door after the Horse has bolted’??!!
All except the 6.9 million and acolytes knew that as far back as Mid November 2019!!
Basic EDICT of any Visionary is “THINK BEFORE YOU ACT”; NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT SPILT MILK!!
How could one do that, especially after the SL Rs. 5000 cash, Biryani Bath topped by ¼ Bottle GAL??!
In fact they (6.9) did not want to “hear, see or speak” (BURIED THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND – VERITABLE OSTRICHLIKE) about the lack of visionary ideas, whom they favoured to vote to power, since the moment they heard about ‘VISTAS OF PROSPERITY AND SPLENDOUR’ from the “Maha Mole Karaya”!!??
God only knows how many times he practiced to pronounce those words, before his mirror, he uttered the ‘Untruths’ to inveigle the masses!!??
Now best not to complain, but sit out and wear it out!!!
That’s what the GOTA GO HOME ARE DOING!!!
Trying, send incompetent President, PM, 225 ill-found occupants of the August assembly, HOME, packing LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL to seek salvation for Sri Lanka!!

      (Part I)
      RBH59,
“It was known from last year the country is on deteriorated state ALL THOSE WHO CALL EXPERT IN POLITICS DID NOT KNOW ANY SOLUTION Visionary people face the same problems everyone else faces”
I have a slight disagreement, on your perspective on this matter!
Your premise, ‘ALL THOSE WHO CALL EXPERT IN POLITICS DID NOT KNOW ANY SOLUTION’ isn’t absolutely correct!!
They (the experts such as Harsha de Silva to only name one now; there are plethora of men and women accomplished Sri Lankans, who have voiced their grave concerns and remedial actions, starting from September 2020, when the Parliament was convened after 2020 elections and in public and media) knew it and responded.
It was of no avail, as the government and ‘powers that be’ verily ignored such advice, likened to an animal DEAF, DUMB AND MUTE!!
OR THEY WERE ASLEEP IN DEEP SLUMBER AT THE HELM – YES I MEAN IT; THE PRESIDENT, PM and CABINET, WHO RE PAIDPRINCELY AMOUNTS BY SL TAXPAYER TO DO THE JOB!!
DERELICTIONOF DUTY and they should be forced to refund all emoluments, including fees for attending parliament forthwith to the Treasury, by these renown imbeciles.

      (Part II)
      VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS!!
The CHOSEN ONES, DR LUXMAN, PBJ, CABAL RALA, being too busy to notice the “slide down the slope”, whilst they ‘thought’, they were successfully ‘TINKERING’ with their favourite Modern Macro Economic Theory (MMT) and Printing money and selling the ‘Family Silver’ – the GOLD RESERVES at bargain prices (!!) and the ‘Road Map’, which never evolved!!!
      BAD GOVERNANCE IS THE ‘PROGNOSIS’
State was definitely not in the DIRECTION OF VISTAS OF PROSPERITY AND SPLENDOUR as promised!

I have serious concerns about this golden visa schemes because even during the war years [LTTE lost the battle but won the war because the war contributed to / facilitated, the corruption and looting by the RAKSHApakses and economic and fiscal parlous state of the sinhala land] sinhala land was known as a welcoming place amongst paedophile networks.
Now with the golden visas paedophiles will be lining up to take advantage of the sinhala land minors!!!
The RAKSHApakeses need to be BOOTED/KICKED out as a matter of priority as otherwise they will even sell their mothers for the USD!!!

I want to reiterate the fact that I DO NOT support the Rajapaksas. I only support the Executive Presidency, Parliamentary System and civil and political rights of the citizens. As a country which suffered from terrorism and constant foreign influence and conspiracies, in order to maintain peace and stability, Sri Lanka should continue the Executive Presidential system. We have already witnessed the impact of the 19A and how turbulent the country was under a national government. Political stability is more important than economic stability for any country.
I hail the President’s decision to appoint a Cabinet WITHOUT the Rajapaksas. One thing for sure is, if the Rajapaksas hold an election now, nobody will contest under them. Therefore, foreign governments and foreign and local companies should stop bribing the Rajapaksas.
Sri Lanka’s Government Debt to GDP is 104% in 2021. What the country needs is environmentally sound, homegrown, economic policies. The PM and the government can take steps to restart the economy.

“Political stability is more important than economic stability for any country.”
What a load of BS is that?
When YOU ARE BLIND TO WHAT HAS JUST UNFOLDED IN THIS COUNTRY since week 1 of March 2022, what you say is correct or may be believed by sane inhabitants!!
Not otherwise!!! People are starving, No food, no Gas, No Power to cook!!!
Is this the country you are seeking??
Well, that’s what your messiah, MaRa was also had in mind, when tacitly approved Easter Bombing!

        Mahila
Of course, Sri Lanka’s economic stability is directly connected with the political stability. Sri Lanka doesn’t have any direct channel of export revenue that can stand its own. All major foreign exchange revenues; expat remittances, tourism and agriculture related exports are affected by politics and political unrest. Sri Lanka can introduce at least two new major sources of foreign exchange earnings. Do you think an “interim government with too many cooks” that has no mandate can bring economic stability to the country?
Sri Lanka is way behind adjusting its economic outlook in parallel to remarkably changing geopolitics. Take the Russia-NATO conflict for example. Who thought President Vladimir Putin could initiate his “No Roubles-No Gas Special Payment Operation” with just “two taps”? He stopped natural gas to Poland and Bulgaria, prompting at least 10 European companies to open Rouble Accounts in ‘lightning fast’. With slow, steady and sure steps, he is achieving all his goals. Ukraine is vulnerable at the hands of US arms dealers running the show.

This comment has no relevance to the article. I don’t even know whether this will be published. I am posting it anyway. May 9 is Russia’s Victory Day. At the rate the US and its allies and partners boost supply of heavvvy weapons to Ukraine and also western leaders openly encourage Ukraine to attack Russia, there could be some incidents. This is a just an observation. Mr. President of Russia, you are in my thoughts, if you know what I mean. I found out why my ancestors were ‘interested’ in the Northern region, particularly Russia. They have even given an apt name to the region. I am still waiting to write about the history of Crimea and Southern Ukraine.

      Hi Champa,
      Your claim,
“I WANT TO REITERATE THE FACT THAT I DO NOT SUPPORT THE RAJAPAKSES’”?????
This is a claim, WHICH IS HARD TO BELIEVE, WHEN YOUR STATEMENTS ARE RESONATING AND REPLICATING THAT EXPRESSED BY THE PRIME EPITOME OF THE R BROS. INC., – PM – THE CAUSE OF THE PRESENT FIASCO!
He was PM for what?? SLEEPING AT THE HELM OF GOVERNMENT, until it crash landed???
You are a JOKE AT THE BEST to have spelt the same thing that imbecile is saying and repeating as if in a case of SLEEP WALKING!!! HIS FACE LOOKS AS IF HE IS IN DEEP SLUMBER, EVEN WHEN HE IS BEING INTERVIEWED BY MEDIA!!!
If you cannot EVEN NOW UNDERSTAND that, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL STABILITY GO HAND-IN-HAND FOR A SUCCESSFUL COUNTRY, you are doomed.
Fit only as an ‘acolytes’ and ‘boot lickers’ or at best, CARERS OF ‘SLIPPERS’ of IMPOSTERS?!

“Economic recovery requires more than US dollars. Influx of foreign currency may help easing the current shortages in consumer essentials. But long-term recovery requires much more fundamental changes in what the country produces how it produces and where does it sell them.”

I will add to the second sentence the following: The country must produce more than what it consumes, and produce an exportable surplus of goods and services. People of the country are living beyond their means. People have got used to entitlements and subsidies. The attitude of the people also needs change. They are part of the corruption and inefficiencies that the country faces.

Dr.Ameer Ali ends his essay with the question…….
How will the confrontation end? This is the sixty four thousand dollar question.

Dr.Lionel Bopage, on the other hand, in an essay titled Srilanka:Typical Propaganda Regime, elsewhere on these pages seems to answer the question of Dr.Ameer Ali by writing………
Make no mistake! They are preparing groundwork to isolate the protest movement so that they could militarily crush the youth once more.
No doubt Dr.Bopage harks back to 1971 and the response of the Govt:then to crush the JVP!

I am afraid 1971 and the present day protests are not comparable. The present day protests are based on different politico economic corruption of the Rajapakses which has appeal to all classes throughout the country.

My view is that the Rajapaksa clan will meet their Waterloo in the forthcoming days.

We can build a new dispensation with only what we have. What we have, mostly, are rotten to the core politicians of all affiliations, prepared-to-go-as-low-as-required professionals/intelligentsia who act on whims and fancies of those politicians, hapless voters as in any other nation, etc. We don’t have many, Dr Alis, Mangalas, etc. who genuinely long to build a better country for every one live in there. Some genuine leaders could emerge from the transition, though, it is difficult and doubtful when you look at the post-independence history and the avenues available for such to happen in an environment of constitution, elections and army ready to act on politicians’ orders.

I’d like an “all communities lived together, happily ever after” ending. But, I am not so hopeful. I hope we will end in a better place than before though. I am not hoping the horse trading and underhand deals will not end us up in a worst place.

Some dogs have no feelings. Likewise, Rajapakshes would never look at the grievances of the very people.

If they came from REAL WALLAWWA, things would not have been like that. As any predecessor did, BPs looted it to the core.
      .
