First Entrance
There are two global trends that are being observed in relation to Buddhist monks these days. The first of them is very interesting. The first of them is the Buddhist monk peace walk (Walk for Peace) that is going on in the United States of America. Vietnamese Buddhist monks are walking thousands of miles carrying the message of peace of the Buddha, are receiving the respect of the American public without any racial or religious discrimination.
And the second trend is the indecent propaganda campaign with a hidden or overt political agenda being carried out by a handful of monks in Sri Lanka. There is a distinguishable difference between the Buddhist monks engaged in the above-mentioned American Peace Walk and the Sri Lankan monks.
The difference lies not only in the purpose of the monks actions in the two groups, but also in their attitudes and behaviour, which are obviously distinguishable.
Second Entrance
The above introduction then leads us to a discourse by the Buddha. Let us listen to the Buddha.
chakkhunā saṃvaro sadhu – sādhu sotena saṃvaro
ghāṇena saṃvaro sadhu – sādhu jivhāya saṃvaro
kāyena saṃvaro sadhu – sādhu vācāya saṃvaro
manasā saṃvaro sādhu – sādhu sabbattha saṃvaro
sabbattha saṃvuto bhikkhu sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
(Dhammapada – Bhikkhu Vagga Gatha 361-2)
The above-mentioned Buddhist teaching from the Dhammapada states that; Right is restraint in the eye, restraint in the ear is right, right is restraint in the nose, restraint in the tongue is right. Right is restraint in the body, restraint in speech is right, right is restraint in the mind, everywhere restraint is right. The bhikkhu everywhere restrained is from all Dukkha (suffering) free.
Such recommendations would certainly be expected of monks who exemplify ideal behaviour in practice. In other words, according to Buddhist teachings, a virtuous monk is expected.
The term ‘sādhu vāchāya saṃvaro’ means that a monk should be restrained in the words he uses. But when looking at Sri Lankan society, even lay politicians do not make the kind of ill-bred statements that some contemporary political monks do. A monk at Mihintale displayed the most indecent instance of such bad behaviour.
When looking at the Buddhist order, such tendencies have emerged since ancient times. In short, many precepts were imposed during Buddha’s lifetime due to repeated breaches of expected monastic disciplines.
Third Entry
The emergence of abusive priests in religious institutions throughout history is not a rare occurrence. It is an undeniable reality for all religions. The topic of abusive behaviour by such religious leaders has come to the fore again in Sri Lanka with a powerful cabinet minister of the government adding the adjective ‘wild’ to a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk. The minister aimed his criticism at the behaviour of the monk in charge of the Mihintale Viharaya, a sacred place for Buddhists not only in the North Central Province but also in Sri Lanka as a whole. It is well-regarded as a historical and archaeological site in general. The minister directly stated that the behaviour of the monk was ‘wild’. (Those representing the minister argue that he did not make comments targeting the Mihintale monk due to political bias.)
The reason for this verbal altercation between a minister and a monk is not a matter of the Dharma. It is basically a statement made by the Mihintale monk regarding a term included in the education stream. The monk alleges that introducing a facility to access an inappropriate internet website in a textbook belonging to the new education stream will cause great harm. However, the monk has protested against the so-called website using obscene language that would be difficult to include even in an article of this kind. The minister’s criticism came after that.
There is a traditional view that monks have the right to instruct the rulers of this island, either through the Dhamma or by pointing out good and bad. Let us accept that tradition for a moment. But is the Mihintale monk’s comment an appropriate exhortation for a monk? The question is now being discussed by civilian society. It should not be forgotten in this discussion that Mihintale is a sacred place that is revered as the place where Buddhism was introduced to this island.
There are more than two hundred and twenty-seven (227) Vinaya rules that govern the conduct of Therawada Buddhist monks. There are numerous other guidelines that address how monks should conduct themselves in relation to lay followers. These make it clear that monks are expected to uphold standards of behaviour that are more exemplary than those required of laypeople.
Keeping that Buddhist ideal in mind, when listening to the verbal attack of the wildly insulted monk, it is clear that it is very much contrary to the monastic discipline. The monk proudly mentions with a smile on his face, a vulgar vocabulary that should not be used by a monk. Now, in response to the offensive reaction by the government minister, the monk has attempted to file a police complaint, calling it an attack on the entire Buddhist order, not just on himself. (He also says he is preparing to file a complaint with President Trump.)
This is not the first time a monk has behaved in this way. Not long ago, a monk was sentenced to prison for insulting the court by using obscene language. Another time he entered a meeting at a Colombo hotel and physically assaulted a monk who was holding opposing views. That monk is currently out on bail after being convicted for a second time on charges of racial incitement. A political monk who was participating in a protest movement slapped a police officer on the cheek, causing the senior officer’s official cap to fly into the air. Another monk in the group was caught on camera getting a tattoo on his arm, in violation of the monastic discipline. The late Minister Mangala Samaraweera referred to them not as true monks but as a ‘sect of yellow-colored monks’ (kahakada).
Fourth Entry
The political monk in Sri Lanka is no stranger to society. Since the days of the ancient kings, Sinhala Buddhist monks have intervened in politics in various ways. The Sri Lankan monks’ traditional political participation is discussed in the book ‘භික්ෂුවගේ උරුමය’ (‘Heritage of Bhikkhu’) published by Dr. Walpola Rahula Thero. In his research work ‘History of Buddhism in Ceylon: The Anuradhapura Period, 3rd Century BC – 10th Century AD’, Dr Rahula provides a lot of historical information for that monks’ political heritage. Contemporaries of Rahula Thero, monks like Udakendawala Siri Saranankara, Bambarande Siri Seevali, and Narawila Dhammarathana were also active in the freedom struggle in India. It cannot be hidden that those famous monks were active in politics. But the important thing that today’s monks should not forget is that those monks never went beyond the limits of monk behaviour and used inappropriate words. Or did not engage in inappropriate political activities. The ‘Vidyalankara Declaration’, a historical milestone in monk politics in Sri Lanka, is the glorious culmination of the work of those monks. The character of Udakendawala Siri Saranankara Thero, who was among those monks who was active in politics until his death, teaches a lesson about the behaviour that a monk should follow if he does politics.
I would like to present a political example set by Venerable Udakendawala Siri Saranankara Thero for the understanding of all monks involved in politics. Under Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake, who was in power between 1965 and 1970, the United National Party was defeated in three by-elections held on the same day for three constituencies (Balangoda – Bentara, Elpitiya and Bandarawela). The political defeat of Mr. Dudley Senanayake was reported as the main news in the ‘Attha’ newspaper the next morning under the headline ‘Dudley does not have all three(“ඩඩ්ලිට තුනම නැහැ”). Angered by that headline, Venerable Udakendawala Thero protested over the phone to the ‘Attha’ consulting editor, Mr. H.G.S. Ratnaweera. Thero’s argument was that reporting in such language was apolitical and inappropriate. The Venerable Saranankara did not stop there, and when he heard that the ‘Aththa’ editor B. A. Siriwardena and features editor Sirilal Kodikara, who were responsible for the headline, he came to meet the two giants of the media world (Siriwardena and Sirilal) in order to condemn their actions. As soon as they heard that the monk was coming, Siriwardena and Sirilal fled through another door and stayed in a tavern at Borella junction to pass the time. (This writer was informed about the incident by B.A. Siriwardena, the editor of the ‘Aththa’ newspaper and the newspaper’s feature writer, Sirilal Kodikara.)
Fifth Entry
Many Buddhist monks live modestly and devote themselves to the well‑being of the Buddhist community. Those who remain close to the people do not reside in luxurious mansions or travel in modern vehicles. Instead, they often carry out their duties by using public transport or walking from place to place. Their speech and conduct are humble and composed. They refrain from insulting others, avoid inappropriate language, and do not sing praises on political stages. They live in accordance with religious discipline.
Good behaviour is a common quality that society expects. The world‑renowned dog Aloka, who accompanies the monks participating in the American “Walk for Peace” receives admiration from people—without distinction between human and animal — because of its gentle and exemplary behaviour.
Even an animal is respected for its gentle behaviour, so monks in public life should also act with discipline, showing how calmness and restraint can have a meaningful impact.

The politics of Sri Lanka should isolate from the Religions because Sri Lanka is a country of multi races, multi language, and multi religions because both politics and religion together did more damage to the country and it became more violent politics and violent religion completely destroyed the governance, rule of law, justice, increased corruption, increased underworld crimes, war, dictatorship and increased poverty and bankruptcy.

Upali Gjanayake: Thanks for quoting from the Dhammapada to describe who a ‘Buddhist Monk’ is.
Do you or are you justified in calling these ‘ Abusive Monks’, “MONKS” of Buddha Dhamma, just because they wear a ‘CHEEWRAYA’ ( that saffron cloth) and ‘Shaven Heads’ (most of them grow hair and shave it to different styles)?
The Buddha Dhamma followers must STOP identifying and naming these people ‘Monks’ and instead introduce them in the society as ‘ VOYEURS’.
In my opinion, the politician who named them as “WANACHARAYA” has given a good start to the silent Buddhists, so far, “Feraed’ to call them as such. Let that naming be a wake-up call to all followers of the Buddha Dhamma.

They are both wrong for using slang language to express their opinion on an important issue.
A Buddhist monk expressing his resistance to educational reforms is not a reason for a government Minister to slander him. The tipsy government should learn to recognize and uphold the freedom of expression and opinion.
/
Douglas / January 17, 2026
CCChampa: You say: ” A Buddhist monk expressing his resistance…… slander him”. Do you know what he said in his resistance? Here it is.
He ( the Chief Priest of Mhinthale Wlawahanguna Dhammarathana) said at a media briefing: ” These reforms teach the children the activities of the ‘LGBTQ’ community, such as Appa Play’ and ‘Gal Katu Gehilla.” You know very well what these ‘terms’ mean.
Is that the way a ‘Buddhist Priest’ or even an ordinary ‘Civilized’ citizen expresses his ‘resistance’ to the reforms at a public forum?
So what else to call him other than a ‘Wanachariya’? This Minister didn’t use the correct term. It should have been ‘WANACHARAYA’.

Reading and understanding are two different skills.
Did you read the first paragraph of my comment that started with “They are both wrong…..”?
Do you know the meaning of “slang language”, and its application to describe adult cults, identities, social groups and taboo subjects?
I agree with you, they are “ugly words” because Sri Lanka’s family-based society believes that homosexuality is an ugly, wild, inappropriate and uncivilized kind of behaviour that threatens marriage, family and reproduction.
If Harini’s education reforms are implemented, 10-year old girls and boys in Sri Lanka will be identified by those “ugly words” by their classmates, face isolation, and some may even commit suicide. Moreover, the 10-year olds who are at pre-pubescent or early pubescence growth stage will be easy targets for “Pdf-files” including Hebephilians.
Knowingly or unknowingly, the Buddhist monk has given a reality check about what to expect.

Do YOU know the meaning of “slang language”?
Slang is nothing obscene or insulting.
Slang is a form that words and phrases mute themselves in social use.
It may be frowned upon by some purists.
But it is functional language.

Prime Minister Harini, who happens to be the Education Minister, became a target for several reasons, including self-made choices.
1. From the very beginning, Harini made it clear that educational reforms were personal to her.
2. She threatened to implement educational reforms despite opposition.
3. Educational reforms were presented to the country in an abrupt, authoritarian manner.
4. Public consultation was not sought during the preparation of educational reforms or prior to its implementation. There was no engagement of parents, teachers, religious and community leaders and Parliamentarians in the process.
5. There was no clear goal or vision in the educational reforms.
6. Harini’s educational reforms demonstrate the lack of competencies and abilities of those who formulated and implemented it.
7. Sri Lanka’s family-based society was shocked when they learnt that Harini’s educational reforms were aiming at luring 10-year old children towards homosexuality. The public instantly connected it to her strong history as an LGBTQ rights’ activist and regarded it as an arrogant personal attempt to replace Sri Lanka’s traditional values with LGBTQ values.
.
On a separate matter, politics have ruined Sri Lankan society and robbed its happiness to the extent that people no longer smile with tourists or offer hospitality which were a hallmark of our culture some time ago.
/
Douglas / January 17, 2026
CCChampa: Your tabulated comments from 1 to 7 are blatant lies. Reference ‘1’, Harini never mentioned that these reforms belonged to her.
For your information, these reforms are one of the promises made in the NPP manifesto. A committee of educators and other prominent people from the field of education was formed to formulate the proposals. These proposals were made public and invited public opinion. It was only after that process that these ‘Modules’ were prepared and presented. Do you know how many ‘Teacher Training’ sessions were conducted?
The ‘Protests’ were a calculated move that erupted as a result of the inclusion of a ‘Web Page’ in the Grade VI ‘English Module’. Now the CID has identified ‘SIX’ who masterminded this scam. Till then, everything went on very well, and all these ‘Pandits’ were nowhere to be seen.
Re. your comment on tourism – that is another concocted story -” the people no longer smile with tourists or offer hospitality”. How then did the tourist arrivals surpass all the previous years and record 70,000 in the last month alone?

Read 1 & 2 points in my comment. They are connected.
Show me the proof that the JVP/NPP tipsy government invited “public views” on educational reforms.
Hundreds of errors in the new curriculums proved that the reforms were not evaluated before its implementation.
Harini’s tech-based educational reforms were not drafted during the JVP/NPP tipsy government’s one year short tenure. It was there long before they came into power and it has been tried to push forward through male leaders before, but to no avail. Then, the external forces behind it brought an anti-Sinhalese, anti-Buddhist, anti-cultural traditions and pro-LGBTQ government into power.
The LGBTQ link in the 10-year olds’ curriculum was not accidental. It was deliberate. It is common knowledge that when someone, in this case a child, logs into a website, he/she will see other recommendations.
Also, there are racial policies in Harini’s educational reforms such as excluding Sinhalese History, Buddhism, marginalizing rural schools and closing down 1150 rural schools where the pupil population is less than 50 disregarding the fact that it is the financial difficulties that prevent parents from enrolling children to those schools.
/
Lester / January 18, 2026
Champa,
It is likely that Harini was paid by some NGO or other special interest group to promote the LGBTQ agenda. This happens in the West as well, albeit on a much larger scale. It is one of the reasons why Donald Trump won the last election. Children in US schools were being intentionally exposed to LGBTQ material. When parents protested to the school officials, nothing was done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXxH9A4l1UU
It is going on in the UK as well. Children are encouraged to question their gender and other such nonsense.
It is good that this monk spoke out. As I said, there is a vast sum of money pushing this LGBTQ agenda.
/
Lester / January 18, 2026
Let’s be blunt: Trump could do much more to stop the LGBTQ agenda. Instead, he is focused on deporting South Americans, who are hard-working, Catholic, and pro-family. He is funding an agency called ICE, with $75B USD over 4 years, to specifically deport “unwanted” immigrants using such silly excuses as a parking ticket. Why not use ICE, call it “LICE”, to go after the LGBTQ people and their business establishments? It is proven in the medical literature that the rate of venereal disease among this group of people is higher than that of the average population.

Darling,
“It is one of the reasons why Donald Trump won the last election. Children in US schools were being intentionally exposed to LGBTQ material”
What is worse, a President who has engaged in child abuse or or “Children in US schools were being intentionally exposed to LGBTQ material” ?
Since you yourself were deported for certain activities with minors, does that mean you’re LGBT ?

NF,
Sri Lankans aren’t true Buddhists. This also applies to Lanken Safronists. The civilization is so fabricated that people live in a fantasy. They are just adherents of a religion known as Sinhala Buddhism. Most of them don’t care about the five commandments (avoid killing animals, avoid stealing, avoid lying, avoid drinking alcohol, etc.). Those who make great attempts to identify as Buddhists and stand out in society are the real hypocrites. I believe it has become part of the Sri Lankan culture. Most people do not ask “why” in their daily lives. This is the muck of Sri Lankan daily life. Perhaps hurting others is widespread in any country with a high poverty rate. Nonetheless, this is not Buddhism.

“I believe it has become part of the Sri Lankan culture. Most people do not ask “why” in their daily lives.”
It is good that you tell the truth that Sri Lankans are not true Buddhists. But I don’t believe that it has become part of the Sri Lankan culture. This brutal culture started only from 1948 after independence. Before the independence, most of the Sri Lankans bothered about Buddhism. During the period of British, Tamils and Sinhalese worked together, many changed to Christianity, had education in western countries. Sri Lanka was ruled by various European governments and before that there were rule of Kings (Jaffna Kingdom, Kotte Kingdom, Kandy Kingdom).
So, Sinhala Buddhism is a creation of the power politics of Sinhalese leaders which currently kills the civilisation of this island. If the Sinhalese decide to continue with the same Sinhala Buddhism, that is a disaster for civilisation of this island.

Another clear example of how politicians should not have stirred the bee nest is the INCUMBENT president’s statement to a Tamil gathering in the north yesterday.
.
According to the president, those who visit North Buddhist temples do so because they “hate” them, not because they observe Sil. These inflammatory public pronouncements made by AKD as president impacted all Buddhists in the country.
This might have grave consequences in the coming months. That should not have been uttered by him. He is often making foolish public statements, but this time was too much. It has harmed SINHALA Buddhist fundamentalists across the country.

The symbols of gentleness and awareness are actual attributes of conscious humans.
I believe that our motherland’s incubment President and his cabinet ministers, who are filled with hatred and jealousy, should finally learn it from the rescue dog “ALOKA,” who is presently participating in the “walk for peace” in the United States, a 3000 km journey across America. The President’s recent public remarks in front of minority Tamils in Jaffna are further dividing the majority Sinhalese.
–
The message is pure, and looking at people’s emotions gives me goosebumps. Everything calmed down, and the purpose of life began. It is a genuine cleansed message about peace in a world that is overwhelmingly opposed to peace. These two dozen monks and a dog named “ALOKA” are trekking around the country waking people’s psyches, regardless of religion, race, or socioeconomic class. These safronists are genuine in their mission of global peace. The silent presence of observers tells the globe that people are being moved by these types of sacrifice marches.

Most of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Monks are abusive. They are above the law because of the constitution. The question is do you need such to special status to Buddhism in the constitution which allow them to abusive? Why the NPP government afraid to such abusive Monks?

.
Jan 12, 2015 — Religious leader forbids building of anti-Islamic idols that might resemble human beings, after winter storm in north of country.
Even many forms of music are haram:
“One of the earliest and most influential anti-music treatises, On the Condemnation of Instruments by the late-ninth century ascetic Ibn Abi al-Dunya, is largely a collection of the sayings of the Prophet and the early heroes of Islam against music. These indicate, among other things, that the widespread use of musical instruments will be one of the signs of the End Times, that Muhammad had been sent “to annihilate the stringed instruments and the reed-pipes,” and that he would put his fingers in his ears when he heard the sound of the shepherd’s pipe (the zammara or mizmar).”
It is not some historical obscurity. ISIS has a history of attacking musical concerts.

AKD’s stupd public pronouncements have a stronger impact on Sinhala Buddhists who travel across the country to observe Sil. I believe AKD should have considered it before. He frequently makes such public declarations without thinking twice. This time, however, I believe it was excessive.

The incumbent president, cabinet ministers, and many others who support the existing government should consider twice before expressing anything incendiary in public. That will undoubtedly assist them avoid agitating people’s feelings concerning a variety of issues. If the JVP truly wishes to rule this nation, they must first learn to tolerate a great deal. This is why I THOUGHT people should be completely deceitful and ignorant for giving their votes to Jeppos, who have not yet matured enough to appreciate others’ beliefs. Politics in democracies should be built on fundamental principles such as respect for others’ viewpoints, whereas dictatorships do the opposite. A lack of wisdom can demolish everything like a glass wall shattering into pieces.

I believe the name rainbow was coined to describe their movement because many people are used to seeing only “black and white” but there are other colors in the spectrum. Similarly, there are variations in gender distribution among the animal kingdom, including humans. And the fact that males with the x-charactor and women with the y-charactor are visible morphologically and genetically when we study hereditary syndromes such as XXY and XYY, among others, in biology. Despite the fact that we are in the twenty-first century, the majority of our people are not interested in facts. When you look at a cross-section of contemporary culture, you will notice that the majority of people are not interested in science or biological facts. This happened in my social circles.
The average citizen in a modern society does not waste time debating myths and astrology, but they do prioritize Western treatment when faced with life-threatening health difficulties. However, in our country, even if a patient is diagnosed with a life-threatening malignancy, they prefer to believe in ayurveda medicine and other sorcery-based cures rather than seeking treatment from Western doctors. By the time they reach the doctors, it is too late to save the lives of the patients they have encountered.
