Why Do “Educated” Youth Join Extremist Terrorist Movements?

By Chandre Dharmawardana

Dr. Chandre Dharmawardana

It is often asked  why educated youth “coming from good homes” join extremist organizations. Simple  references to “brain washing”, or the stupidity of the young are no explanations. There is no scientifically recognized   process called “brain washing”. It is also  naive to assume that  educated youth  join the IS (Islamic state)  to go to heaven and get their 21 virgins! Many youth radicalized in British Universities ended up fighting for the ISIS. At least one of the Sri Lankan Muslim Kamikazi had a British training, had four children, a flourishing business and lived in a million dollar home in Colombo. A British education in a narrow subject like “information technology” not touching any  broad scientific or cultural subjects, given in a British “red Brick” university can have no effect on already acquired belief systems. Don’t our “most educated” ministers go to Tirupathi, India,at the drop of a pin?

These radicals are no different from the young intellectuals of an earlier generation who believed in a simplistic theory of capitalists versus the workers, and how the workers would unite to bring down the capitalists and create a classless society where even state power has disappeared! They believed that “THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS” –  so we had  Stalin, Mao Tse Tung,  Pol Pot, Kim Il Sung, countless Left-Terrorist Maoist-Guevarist-Naxalite groups, and Wijeweera’s JVP in Sri Lanka  killing innocents to achieve their “objective”. This objective is given a historical destiny by dialectical materialism formulated as “historical materialism”. Contrary to the predictions of historical materialism, these movements have only produced ghoulish Gulags.

Similarly, these “brain-washed” young Muslims are educated in the Islamic fundamentalist view of the world consisting of Muslims (good), and infidels (bad).  Many educated Arabs do not believe that the 9/11 World Trade Center attack was done by Arab Kamikazes. They think it was a put-up job by Jewish groups and the Bush government to give them an excuse to attack the Oil Rich Middle Eastern countries on the economic front, and to relaunch  the Crusades against Islam. This is the rationale for the  counter-attack on luxury hotels frequented by Westerners, and on Christian Churches.

Just as Dialectical materialism calls  for a revolution leading to a  necessary final state which is an article of faith of Marxists, Islam defines that history must necessarily lead to the Islamic state after a Jihadic step. The “holy war” replaces the revolution of the Red Comrade. The historical destiny taught to young Muslims by impassioned Arabic Teachers who have come from the Middle East is as simple and clear as the JVP five lessons. Their role is to establish the Islamic State, with everyone practicing the Sharia law which encompasses not only morality, but economic activity as well – a complete ideology is sold.

Just as  many Sri Lankans, or even ministers are over-whelmed enough to readily accept ideas cooked up  in the West, because they are from the West,  these young people are also over-whelmed by “renowned” and fiery teachers from the Middle East who paint a glorious picture of the old Caliphate.  The idealistic young Muslim has a clear jihadist mission, taught to him by these fundamentalist “international teachers”. Achieving  this designated  noble cause,  the Islamic Caliphate  in the name of Allah becomes their mission. Achieving this  END is justified by ANY means whatever. It is a sacrifice that they make, in much the same way as  “rathu sahodarayas” (red comrades) are ready to fight the capitalist army and die in the process of the revolutionary capture of the state by the “working class”.

The young university students who readily absorbed the “five lessons” of the JVP, although almost stupid in content, attempted to overthrow the legitimate government because the message fitted in with their pre-conceived notions. These notions were about  the need to change the economic framework by “hook or crook”,  hammered into the Sri Lankan youth by the LSSP and CP politicians who came prior to the JVP. The tremendous disparity between their power and state power seemed irrelevant to a just cause.

The early Marxists in Sri Lanka  had fomented  the trade unions to rise in militant “hartals”, hoping to capture power. They were sure of being the “Bolsheviks” who will  replace the “Menshevick”  government of Bandaranaike. So, the LSSP, a revolutionary party  did not worry about  popularity at the polls. Dr. Osmond Jayaratne, and Engineer C. B. Wijedoru, both central committee members of the LSSP assured me that Language Parity  was a policy strategically crafted to the revolution using unions with more than 50% Tamils, and not designed for elections. When they abandoned the “revolution” and joined Mrs. Bandaranaike, they jettisoned  parity and embraced  the majority language, as one language is more efficient for the classless, divisionless, unethnic  communist state.

In the case of the radicalized young Muslims, they too hope to change what they see is an utterly immoral world. The world must conform to the draconian morality taught to them by the fundamentalist Arab teachers. Martin Luther had found such a moralistic message xplosively successful in an earlier era. These young people find an outlet to their moral and idealistic energy, and an identity thorough these extremist organizations. Their parent’s  society has failed to provide them with valid idealistic objectives suitable to the 21st century, and allowed  extremist teachers to infect them with a new passion. This process is not “brain washing”, but more analogous to the spread of an infection of virulent memes.

The Ilanaki Tamize Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) declared in 1949 that the Ceylon Tamils –  a mere 10% of the population – must have an “exclusive homeland” in Ceylon, and that their struggle is to establish their own Raj where “they will manage their own affairs”. The leaders were wealthy  “upper-caste”  land owners of the North, but living in Southern Ceylon, and in the best parts of  Colombo. They blamed the southern politicians (them excluded) for all the problems of the North. This was an an inflammatory, racist and exclusive ideology crafted to attract the fervour of the youth, with some of its leaders identifying with the Chola empire.  The move towards Swabasha with the cry of Sinhala ONLY became fuel for further  polarization.  By a strange twist of history, Vaddukkoddai, a town named  ‘Batakotte’  till the dawn of the 20th century because it was a Sinhalese garrison town  against Chola invasions,  was the venu of the Vaddukoddai resolution. It called for  separatist  armed struggles to achieve  “Eelam”, the ethnically exclusive Tamil homeland.

Educated Tamil parents with liberal values could not  understand why their well educated children joined violent Eelamist racist movements.  In the end the parents themselves were infected by the same bug, when  the majority reaction  erupted into a  horrific pogrom in 1983, and escalated into  brutal war. Notably, Jeyaratnam Wilson’s political writings had evolved from its empirical approach to a separatist stance  within a dozen years, moving to support a view of Sri Lankan history about Tamil homelands that he would have vehemently rejected in an earlier decade.

The same phenomenon exists in the highly literate world of Judaism. The young fundamentalist Jews in Israel fight and kill to build Zion. They too are driven by an utterly medieval, jingoist Judaism  that underpins  Likud  ideology. The “moral right” of the Zion or the Caliphate, the dialectical necessity of the communist state, or the rights of an  Eelamist  historical claim, these   overshadow  mere human rights or, say, Palestinian claims to existence. Leaders of Zionist terror organizations like the IRGUN, e.g., Menachem Begin and Benjamin Natanyahu, became prime minsters with US support.  Another terrorist group, LEHI,  proclaimed that the “Armed struggle is the duty of all Israel; every Jew has to be a warrior. Religion … raises the armed struggle to a ritual above any other facet of human endeavour. Hallelujah with machine guns”! The Zionist terror, at first directed against the British, was later directed against the Palestinians who suffer  enormous aggression but remain protected from the UNHRC by the Western powers. A more just British policy could have produced co-existence between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Palestinians have mounted equally horrific counter-terror  groups like the Hezbollah who are funded by the Arab states. All these terror organizations easily recruit their educated youth to engage in terror. A leader of the LEHI, Yitzhak Shamir served as a prime minister of Israel. The end  justifies the use of violent means for those in the faith.

The Zionist terrorist movements against the British arose during a time when Nazism with its credo of violence  arose in Europe, misrepresenting  Drawinian evolution and using it as a theoretical underpinning. This misrepresentation of Darwin, initiated by literary men like Tenyson who pictured nature as  being “red in Tooth and Claw”, is scientifically incorrect. Darwinian evolution works when a large number of genes and cells  COOPERATE to take advantage of fitness landscapes, and not when acting by competition.  I have discussed this at length in my book “A Physicist’s  view of Matter and Mind (World Scientific), Chapter 3” and elsewhere in that book.

Dr. Jane Russell, in her ever topical, sadly no longer available  book  “Communal Politics Under the Donoughmore Constitution, 1931-1947 (Tisara Publishers) ” writes that  nationalist leaders like SWRD Bandaranaike and GG Ponnambalam were glowingly referred to as “pocket Hitlers” by their respective  admirers in the two ethnic camps. Prabhakaran with his Child soldiers wearing Cyanide capsules graduating into  Kamikaza cadre was the final product of one such nationalism. Its Hindu ideology,  nourished in ultra-conservative Jaffna Christianity makes Shiva into a  destroyer and the Christian God into a partisan Shiva.

Societies that fail to provide for the idealism and rebelliousness of  youth through opportunity  in adventure, in the  arts, sciences and professions become the theater of extremist ideologies. Just as  young plants need protection against insects, weeds and extremes of weather during their early growth, young nations need  protection. Even flourishing “open societies” cannot allow subversive forces supported by external money  to crush the traditional structures in their societies.

Sri Lanka had evolved a compassionate society that gave refuge to all faiths since Asokan times, with near equality to women and “lower castes”, when compared with other ancient societies.  No heretics were burnt. The END, however desirable, could  not justify  THE MEANS used to achieve the end, since the righteous path was the essential element of Buddhist and Jain doctrines, and in forms of  Hinduism that evolved under teachers like Nagarjuna.  Lanka’s  rulers  gave asylum to Catholics and Muslims in the face of Dutch-Lutheran repression. More recently, the nation’s ancient  wholesome  values were jettisoned  in favour of virulent  doctrines coming from the political left, and from the political right which uses religion to anchor  its claims.

The Irish and Tamil diaspora fed and fomented  the Irish and LTTE violence. The US and its NGOs feed and foment disaster capitalism in young nations and interfere with their elections by propping up US favorites. In such operations, the  ‘manifest destiny of the US’  overshadows all human rights. Similarly, the fundamentalist oil sheiks build Mosques, Madarassis and push fundamentalist agendas causing dissension in Myanmar, Sri Lanka or elsewhere, while heaping the blame on the  “intolerance” of the majority community.  These ideologies   reject dissent and  open discussion. They  threaten  to eliminate the other by force.

But many politicians, tempted by money and  influence, allow the camel into the tent,  and then it is too late.

It is a combination of several factors.

    1. Brain washings

    2. Peer Pressure

    3. Parental pressure

    4. Social injustice and discrimination (Example LTTE)

    5. Protecting their culture , religion, and nationalism

    6.. Intelligence

    7. Hopeless situations

    8. Honor

    9. Heaven and 72 virgins ( not 21 ) for eternity.

Had the homo sapiens, remained as Primates in Africa, with 48 chromosomes, instead of the current 46 chromosomes, there would have been no religion and no suicide bombers.

Please note Vattakottai already existed in your ancestral homeland Tamil Nadu.
Obviously when your ancestors the Erivirar mercenaries came here looking for trouble from Tamil Nadu they probably had named this place being Vatta Kottai, – Circle Fort. Here is some detail:

Vattakottai is a small Village/hamlet in Agastiswaram Block in Kanniyakumari District of Tamil Nadu State, India. It comes under Leepuram Panchayath. It is located 15 KM towards East from District head quarters Nagercoil. 6 KM from Agastiswaram. 729 KM from State capital Chennai

Vattakottai Pin code is 629401 and postal head office is Azhakappapuram .

Panchalingapuram ( 2 KM ) , Kanniyakumari ( 4 KM ) , Agastiswaram ( 4 KM ) , Karumpattur ( 5 KM ) , Kovalam ( 5 KM ) are the nearby Villages to Vattakottai. Vattakottai is surrounded by Agastiswaram Block towards west , Nagercoil Block towards west , Rajakkamangalam Block towards west , Valliyoor Block towards North .

Nagercoil , Panagudi , Padmanabhapuram , Vadakkuvalliyur are the near by Cities to Vattakottai.

This Place is in the border of the Kanniyakumari District and Tirunelveli District. Tirunelveli District Valliyoor is North towards this place . It is near to bay of bengal. There is a chance of humidity in the weather.

Vattukottai or Vaddukoddai is a circular (Vadda/vaddu) masonry structure or fort (Koddai) for defence. Calling by the Sinhala word Batakotte does not have any logic because there is no Kotte/Fort without Bata/garrison whereas the Tamil word Vaddukoddai has a very clear and logical meaning. Chandre Dharmawardana is a fraud who is trying to mislead a few innocent Sinhalese to believe his concocted stories. What he should remember is that he can fool some Sinhalese but not others.

Prof. Chandre Dharmawardana (a Chemistry-Physics researcher) is NOT a Social Scientist or an etymologist or a linguist and neither is he a Tamil/Sinhala scholar who has done research in the Tamil/Sinhala languages. All what he has done in his website is his own creation or assumptions. Reading Prof. Chandre Dharmawardana’s racist articles is very similar to reading another article of that crackpot Racist Professor Nalin Silva.

“Native Vedda” refers to Vattakottai in India. There are all sorts of ChenKottai and other …kottai all over the place.
What have they got to do with Vadukkodai of Sri lanka?
To find out its early name, look at 19th Century Ceylonese records, 18th and 17th century Dutch records and Maps. The American Seminary and School at Vadukkodai had its name-board as BatiKotte Seminary.
The Dutch maps show the names compatible with Batakotte and never a Vattakottai. Read the dispatches of the British government agents like Lewis, Denham Horsburg and others.

If the name had been Vattikotte, the Dutch would have written it as Wattakottai as they did for the because V = has an F sound in dutch. Hence the W is used as in Wigneswaran.

The fact that there is a Vattaakottai in India, and a Dharkottai in Odisha, or a Chenkottai somewhere else, etc, etc are irrelevant and these are complete red herring.

This is the kind of distortion of history that the Eelamits resort to, to claim that
The North was their exclusive Tamil homeland.

            Vattakottai or Battakotte?

If you happen to go to the Kannyakumari beach in Tamil Nadu, you will find another Vattakottai, a circular fort standing surrounding the wide seaside. Looks like the Sinhala-Buddhists have built another Sinhala Battakotte in Tamil Nadu as well. The meaning of Vatta or Vattu in Tamil is round or circular and the meaning of Kottai is Fort. If you see the Portuguese records, they have miss-spelled most of the Sri Lankan names. Calling Vattakottai as Battakotte is not a big mistake when compared to many others. What the Dutch did was, they simply followed what the Portuguese did in misquoting and mis-spelling and even the British followed the Dutch for some time. The Sinhala-Buddhists like Prof. CD are trying to take the maximum advantage from those European colonial mis-spellings/mispronunciation and coming up with huge assumptions and definite conclusions.

By looking at a misspelled Portuguese map, he is coming to conclusion that the Tamil Vaddukoddai is the Sinhala Batakotte. To understand why the Portuguese misspelled these words, one must analyse the 16th century Portuguese language before coming to such controversial assumptions and conclusions. One reason for this may be that the 16th century Portuguese language did not have the proper phonemes to denote the voiced grapheme of Tamil/Sinhala languages.

There are several Garrison Forts around all corners of Sri Lanka. Why should anyone call only the Vaddukoddai Fort as the Garrison Fort or Batakotte? (This was not the only kotte where Bata was stationed). Vattukottai or Vaddukoddai is a circular (Vadda/vaddu) masonry structure or fort (Koddai) for defence. Prof. Chandre Dharmawardana is a fraud who is taking full advantage of the Portuguese mispronunciation and is trying to mislead a few innocent Sinhala Buddhists to believe that the Tamil Vattakottai was once a Sinhala Battakotte.

          Native Vedda,
There is a map of Sinhale at the Beeldbank National Archives, the Netherlands. According to that map about 85% of all villages in Yapanaya in the early Dutch era, were in fact Sinhala. Demalization of Sinhala village names had taken place with the arrival of Demala adminisators,’the amilders’, during the Dutch period of rule. The place name Batakotte is in that map.

Nice observation. The first tip off was given by the Muslims themselves. So, how can the SINHALA RACIST NETWORK claim that information to muck head Gnanasara who was getting leaked info from the Muslim rival groups to score high points as if HE IS VERY INTELLIGENT MONK-ey who warned everyone….So, the I TOLD YOU SO is going about all over the place. Even Wijedasa Rajapakse bugger has become the MOST INTELLIGENT Politi-Zion who warned about the “ISLAMIC GROUPS” . The list he gave was drafted by some “HUBBU-Grave Worship” type Muslim informer (May be Azad Sally and Riyaz Sally team, as all the names in his list were NON-HUBBU groups. These groups are in conflict with Saint Worshipping Hubbu gang. So, he just took he list off the hand from these informants and just had it read without giving any evidence about any illegal activity. His body language clearly says that it was not his INTELLIGENT MIND that found out. BTW, he cannot lie to his own CONSCIENCE can he…. That realization is very evident in his MUCK FACE and HIS FILTHY CORRUPT MONEY FED Body Language.

I think it is the frustrations built up by the up and coming young who are imprisoned in the own countries with strict visa regimes by the western countries.
Many people feel offended by being confined to ones country.I felt this anger at the very hotel at the Cinnamon gardens where our expatriate relatives gottogether and some are white people who are my relatives. I remember a group of Sinhalese youth, seems to be very rich, had a go at my German relatives, showing their disappointment that a Westerner could easily come to Sri ,but with all their money finding difficult to get to any Western country on a similar visit. I invited their leader to join us at our circle and introduced them to my foreign born relatives and they were thrilled and they paid for all the drinks.
I promised them that when I go back to UK will lobby our politicians about their frustrations felt by the up and coming youth. This was so in North Arica where there was a such a massacre. This is so in Africa too and they take revenge on the poor Christians, innocent whites settled in their countries and now the tourists which represent the West and we Christians are innocent victims. In the Western countries the security services are waste of space and money and we have equally ignorant politicians who can’t see beyond their noses.
The hostile youth leader told me that it is their dream to see places like Paris,London and Rome but they are restricted with many visa requirements. Last night I had a drink up with colleagues from UK and they fully agree with me.
I blame the third world leaders too for this sorry situation reason why their people are protesting till their crooked leaders are all ousted.

    Dr. Chandre Dharmawardana,

RE: Why Do “Educated” Youth Join Extremist Terrorist Movements?

    “Educated” in what?

    In their unproved convoluted ideologies?

The earth is about 4,630,004, 000 years old.

For most of the time, for 4,630,000, 000 years, God was busy with other tasks, and then suddenly around 4,000 years ago, God suddenly decides to appear in the driest parts of the Middle East, not in Africa where the Primates and Home Sapiens originated, not in Asia where there were advanced civilizations, or in China, and all of a sudden the narrative given to the Jews, Christians and Muslims, is Divine and the eternal truth.

The youth are “educated” in the above narrative, and the Earth is Flat, the Sun goes around a stationary Earth, and Heaven is above ( is the Earth rotating?), where some of these “educated” are youth trying to get 72 virgins, when their dead bodies are on Earth, the third rock from the Sun, and what are they going to do with the virgins, with no body?

“Religion is the opium of the masses'” said the Philosopher Karl Marx.

Time to educated these youths in Philosophy, instead of in Theology and scriptures.

This attack came out of the blue. The Muslims were not making demands, nor threatening the country in any way, they did not have any issues with the Christians either. So it is a huge mystery why this country was targeted, and why these despicable people killed so many innocent Sri Lankans.
We have to get to the bottom of this, hold every criminal responsible for this massacre, and give them the harshest sentences.
We also have to cauterize this cancer before it spreads.

It is admirable that the entire country has united and cooperated with the investigations, as we try to get over our shock.

      Chitra,

As you rightly said why this sudden violence? End of this year the Presidential Election is scheduled. Once the President is elected, other than from the Rajapaksa lot, which is likely to be Ranil Wickremasinghe, not only the Rajapaksas have lost for ever but also these Islam Fundamentalists who are hoping to convert this country to a Islamic State in another twenty years. To do that they have to continue their work which they started under the Rajapaksa regime. Therefore this violence will help them to get the Rajapaksas back in governance. Have you not seen the advert where Gota very forcefully says that he will wipe out Islam Terrorism if he is appointed as the President, displayed in a paid advert by Dakkili Maharajah on Sirasa. Gota has proved himself with Greece Yakas now these are the Islam Yakas that Gota has created.

Please do say if you do not know anything.

Sinhalam, via Hindia, very well knew about the whole thing, from the incipient stage, even to the attacks.

Sinhalam, via Hindia, were very well aware that the attacks were suppose to take place predominantly in Tamil areas, and any destruction, if any, would not be to Sinhalese.

The attackers changed their plan, or may well have spoofed Hindia.

However, Rajapaksas very well knew about the attacks, and they did not attend Easter prayers .

Either way, Hindia and Sinhalam thought benefits to be reaped outweighed the destruction to be wrought on Tamils.

      Because,

Tamil-Muslim enmity, so north-east merger will not get vocal and Hindi desperately wants this.

No need for Sinhala rapist thugs (the so called Sinhala armed forces) removal,
      permanently Shoving political solution,

Above all in the pretext of terrorism etc. shoving all these HR issues and possibly war crime probe etc.

The Sori Lanka intelligence had turned blind eye, because of (coming) opportunity for looting Muslim wealth, just like all Sinhalese governments and people looted wealth from Tamils under pretext of terrorism, by abducting wealthy Tamils or their close relatives and ransom demanded for release, or else they were either carbon-dated or thrown into jails under terrorism charge without any due process.

It has already happened to the wealthy muslim business man, whose bank locker was raided and the Sori Sinhala Lanka intelligence already spread the news that money, diamonds etc. were all found in the man’s house.

If you have followed the development of attacks carefully, it is Hindia first reacted by condemning the attacks.

Weather it is a Sinhala elite educated in Royal/Ananda, Vishaka/Devi Balika, Peradeniya/Colombo, Oxford/Cambridge, Harvard/Yale, etc or the uneducated Sinhala village coconut plucker/toddy taper, Vatti amma, or trishaw driver, there is hardly any difference when it comes to habits, attitude, behavior, and thinking. They all have the same low mentality and narrow mindedness. Sometimes I feel that the coconut pluckers are much more intelligent than these so called ‘Educated’. It is their inherent nature.
Prof. Chandre Dharmawardana, Prof. Nalin Silva, Dr. Dayan Jayathilake, Prof. Asoka Bandarage et al are some of the Best examples of this kind (so called ‘Educated’).

A very thought provoking anysis. I fully agree with the writer’s thesis.

Vaduckodai resolution is the father of LTTE, 50-50 the grandfather and Dravidian separatist sentiment in Southern India is the great grandfather. Jaffna library and 1983 gave LTTE a shot in the arm.

My strategy to counter this madness over ethnicity and religion based pockets in this small island is to tell them in no uncertain terms that
    1) Tamils are all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival
    2) They have to choose between a separate Homeland OR the right to live anywhere, they are mutually exclusive
    3) Emphatically stress that a Homeland will entail relocation of +50% Tamils presently living outside North East.
    4) Educate the Tamils that a federal structure will leave +50% of them as second class citizens.
    5) Tamil desire to live in the south is their own enemy as this tacitly admits a kind of superiority of the Sinhala Buddhist society at the back of their minds.
    6) Warn the Sinhalese that a federal Sri Lanka will need huge military resources to keep it federal.

HINDU/CHRISTIAN TAMILS AND BUDDHIST/CHRISTIAN SINHALESE SHOULD NOW UNDERSTAND THAT WAHABI THREAT IS NO MORE IMAGINARY BUT R E A L.

“I said Vaduckodai resolution is the father of LTTE.”

The LTTE (VP) assassinated Alfred Duraiappah the former Mayor and independent MP from Jaffna on 27 July 1975.
BTTAKOTTAI resolution was passed on 14 May 1976.

Therefore VP and LTTE were the joint fathers of BTTAKOTTAI resolution of 1976.
Some say the NEW TAMIL TIGERS was formed in 1972.

However the BTTAKOTTAI resolution was dead on its arrival.

Perhaps VP’s sperm had an inherited chromosomal abnormality, a hormonal imbalance, dilated testicular veins or a condition that blocks the passage of sperm and deformed it, ….. hence the early demise of the resolution.

        Jayawickrema is a “constitutional expert”.
Just as a Dentist would trace all illnesses to bad teeth, constitutionalists would trace all national problems to the constitution.
Britain has no constitution. But look how it has practiced state terror on Ireland since the 1920s, and state terror on countless colonies till the 1950s, on the tiny Falklands Island, on Chagos Island in the 1980s, and then joined the US in pouring bombs on Libya, Iran and Irak (which was claimed to have weapons of mass destruction).

The LTTE was formed because the TULF thought it could create a set of “boys”, or brown shirts like those of Hitler, but found that the TULF could not control them. The “boys” decided that the TULF leaders were “traitors”,a nd followed the advise of the tamil Poet “Kasi Anandan” to make sure that no traitor died a natural death.
It was, I think, SJV Chelvanayagam who claimed that GGPonnambalam was a traitor to the Tamil cause and began the labeling game.
Remeber that the first Communal clash was instigated by GGPonnambalam in 1939, long before the constitution that Jayawickrema is talking of. If nor for the word war II, the Communal clashes of 1956 and onwards would have started in the 1940s.

The dialectic was Hegel’s idea; Marx took it and applied it to economics. Whereas for Hegel, the endgame was the State, for Marx it was the overthrow of the State, e.g. the transition from capitalism to socialism. For the Wahhabis, the endgame is also a State, albeit an Islamic one with a caliph, that has historical precedence. As with Hegel, the State is the ultimate manifestation of the “Divine” (the Absolute). In this kind of society, individual rights are secondary to the collective good. So-called rationality and freedom can only be gauged within the context of obedience to the State. As the author has correctly noted, the highest “law” of the Islamic State is Sharia. Even though moderate Muslims are not necessarily opposed to Sharia, they may prefer less violent means to achieve it.The author mentions Darwinism. Darwinism is a good model for capitalism. Capitalism takes scarcity as a given, but unlike Marxism, uses Darwinism as a mechanism for the allocation of resources. Darwinism also serves as the basis for the evolution of capital and the growth of markets. Ultimately, Darwinism is what lets markets be free, as opposed to centrally planned. As to why a young person may reject capitalism and fall under the spell of theocratic dogma, the reason probably has to do with alienation. As Marx noted, the proletariat, under capitalism, is a means to the end, not the end in itself. He is always expendable. The allure of an ideology like Wahhabism is that it greatly exaggerates the role an individual can play in helping to make such an end materialize. Having fully subscribed to such a notion, said individual is even willing to forgo his personal liberties and future fortune for the “cause” and turn to extreme methods to do so.

” Having fully subscribed to such a notion, said individual is even willing to forgo his personal liberties and future fortune for the “cause” and turn to extreme methods to do so.”

This also applies to the Red Comrades. Some of us who were young in the 1960s and 1970s remember people like Shanmugathasan (Chinese wind CP) and Merrill Fernando (Revolutionary LSSP) going about saying that socialism MUST be achived by the Bullet if not by the Ballot”, and that the “revolution is JUST ROUND THE CORNER”.
But their movements died a natural death, and the vacant political space was filled in by the JVP which was inspired by Che Guevara’s tactics of rural revolution. Another group of people linked initially to the LLSP(R) decided to try to capture the minds of the rural agricultural worker and set up MOLINAR (?) which tried to motivate the rural workers against “agrochemical multinatioanls” as the militant issue, and worked to rope in those who were trying to popularize traditional varieties of seeds etc. to their side, by de-emphasizing the Marxism part.
Their interest in the rural agri-sector was a mere front to organize the rural workers under a Marxist banner, as had been attempted in Kerala.
One of their projects was to set up an agricultural college in the North. However, much of this was eclipsed by the rise of the JVP and the LTTE.

Capitalism takes scarcity as a given, but unlike Marxism, uses Darwinism as a mechanism for the allocation of resources. Darwinism also serves as the basis for the evolution of capital and the growth of markets.

Isn’t this the popular but incorrect version of Drawinism that the writer Dr. Dharma had criticized? He says that the struggle for survival is not capitalist competition, but involves cooperative actions of many to take advantage of fitness.

This is more akin to Capitalist countries coming together to formulate trade agreements, WTO etc? I don’t know how modern evolutionary theory is used in economics.
Von Neuman and Morgenstern used Game Theory to formulate a modern mathematical version of economics. Friedman and others tried to justify free-for-all capitalism and neo-liberalism, but today most economists believe that their theoretical methods were founded on erroneous and poor mathematical concepts.
Fredrich von Heyek said essentially the same thing in his address after receiving the Nobel prize.
Modern evolutionary theory is based on how complex dynamical systems negotiate fitness landscapes.

This is all playing into the hands of the Rajapaksa’s. Since they could not get MR to be Prime Minister, and the courts ruled against him, it seems the former Sec. of Defense has put his hat into the ring, at an opportune time. Now is the time to show the people that only HE can handle the terror attack that came out of the blue. Again we have to wonder exactly what kind of evil may be behind this terror attack, what ulterior motives they may have, and why they picked on our nation. Whoever the devils are, they have done the Rajapaksa’s one big favor.

      Hi Chitra

Isn’t it wonderful to be living in florigen soil and use the human tragedy to push a political point.

I may not agree with Mr. G.R fact of the matter in hindsight you have to agree Sri Lanka was much safer place when he was the defense secretary. So don’t get the facts get in the way justify the end.
One finale observation are you suggesting Rajapaksa’s had a hand in organize this heinous atrocity. Not surprising some in US still believes Israel and George Bush carried out 911. So you are in good company.

      • 3
        0

Such a Hasbara like response. Was Sri Lanka “a much safer place” under GR? Perhaps you are ignorant of the fact that journalists were killed, threatened, harassed, and some fled for their lives, under GR, dissidents were kidnapped in white vans and never seen again, and people lived in fear. It seems No one knows who is behind this horrible massacre, and it could be anyone.

It is a time for conspiracy theories and false rumors, to keep the people in fear. The Rajapaksa’s are not the saints you like to portray them to be, the country lived in fear, and they were voted out. Israel is capable of breaking international laws, and that includes human right abuses, excessive violence against unarmed civilians, bombing of civilians structures, all condemned by the UN, so let’s not pretend Israel is incapable of any type of violence, the fake outrage does not fly.

        • 0
          1

Remember that the Rajapaksa era was an era of war and post war. Think of what happened in Europe after each of the world wars, and how many people disappeared, and how many journalists who said the wrong thing disappeared?
Think of how the Britsh dealt with revolt in Kenya, Palastine and Ireland etc even just recently in Kosovo etc., by the West
Although this does not justify such evil, politics under war and post-war conditions cannot be judged by peace-time standards. However, just as England got rid of Churchill, it was absolutely correct to get rid of the Rajapaksas and put in a new set of leaders<.b. But they have proved to be incompetent in both the economic and security fronts, failed to draft a constitution which has no ambiguities, but they are seen to be the most successful of rogues who have lined their own pockets, even robbing the central bank, and even conveniently forgetting who pays the rentin the form of kickbacks for their million-dollar condos.

The worst crime of the Ranil – Sirisena-Sampantha-Hakeem-Ranawaka combine is that they have paved the way for the Rajapaksas to come back. The public can well conclude that the known and successful devil is better than the incompetent devil who is only good at plundering the nation and exposing the nation to terrorism.

So logical for you isn’t it now you can front up to the devastated families and explain to them for the good of the country 250 lives its ok.

Here is why Israel has always been a suspect:
In September 2001, The New York Times and Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that four hours after the attack, the FBI arrested five Israelis who had been filming the smoking skyline from the roof of a white van in the parking lot of an apartment building, for “puzzling behavior”. They were charged with illegally residing in the United States and working there without permits. The Israelis were said to have been videotaping the disaster with what was interpreted as cries of “joy and mockery”.[58][59] Police found the van and a search revealed $4,700 in cash hidden, along with foreign passports and a boxcutter which aroused suspicions and led to the detention of the occupants. The men were held in detention for more than 2 months, during which time they were subjected to interrogation and lie detector tests, before being deported back to Israel; one of the men (Paul Kurzberg) refused to take the test for 10 weeks, and then failed it.[60]
The five men worked at the company Urban Moving Systems, owned and operated by Dominik Suter. After the men were arrested the FBI searched their offices and questioned Suter, however Suter fled to Israel before he could be questioned further. Eventually, Suter’s name appeared on the May 2002 FBI Suspect List, along with the Sep 11 hijackers and other suspected extremists.[61][full citation needed]
According to a former CIA chief of operations for counterterrorism Vince Cannistraro, there was speculation that Urban Moving Systems may have been a front for an intelligence operation investigating fund-raising networks channeling money to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. On March 15, 2002, The Jewish Daily Forward claimed that the FBI had concluded that the van’s driver, Paul Kurzberg, and his brother Sivan, were indeed Mossad operatives, who were in America “spying on local Arabs”.

What is in the ITAK Maradana resolution and what did the early ITAK strive for, initially?
I am told that there were two versions. The English version was more moderate and looked for federalism, while the Tamil version, said to be drafted by Mr. Navaratnam and endorsed by SJV and EMVNaganatha, was much more extreme. Even the name ITAK was translated as the “Federal party” in English with no reference to “Tamil” or “Arasu”. The later is related to “Raashta (Raj)” which acquires an “a” in front of the “r” as required by old Tamil grammar, and becomes “Arasu” in proper Tamil.
Similarly, the Tamil language handouts given in 1952 in the North are said to be more extreme than those used in English in Colombo.
The ITAK lost badly to the TC of GGPonnambalam in 1952. Ponnambalam campaigned claiming that ALL of Sri lanka was the homeland of the Tamils, and was a member of the Cabinet of DS Senanayake.
The ITAK campaigned claiming that GGPonnambalam was a traitor to the tamils;. The Arasu Kadchi Tamil language campaign is said to have used the vision of an independent tamil Kingdom run by Tamils for Tamils.
So in 1952 there were two faces of the ITAK, one for the English educated Urban Tamils (who were largely supporters of the UNP or the Tamil Congress of GGP), and for the Jaffna Tamils.
GGPonnambalam’s view that the “homeland of the Tamils was all of Ceylon” ultimately implied some form of co-existence with the Sinhalese, while the ITAK policy was to push for living apart, with so-called “Tamil” and “Sinhalese” areas demarcated, and wide powers transferred to the Tamils.
The historian KM de Silva has analyzed all these and how the hardened attitudes developed, in his essay on “Reaping the Whirl wind”.

“The ITAK campaigned claiming that GGPonnambalam was a traitor to the tamils;. The Arasu Kadchi Tamil language campaign is said to have used the vision of an independent tamil Kingdom run by Tamils for Tamils.”
GGP was denounced as traitor for his alleged role in the disenfranchisement of the Hill Country Tamils.
The FP was opportunist in using two names; but it never called for a Tamil state until much after the 1972 constitution.
Suntharalingam used the concept of Eelam after 1956, but that did not cut much ice. An FP dissenter V Navaratnam called for Tamil Eelam much after.
Kingsley de Silva is not the most objective of historians and his biases (despite finding subtle expression in writing) are no secret.

What is the difference between பலம் and பழம் or பளம்?

Have you heard of Pattukkottai (பட்டுக்கோட்டை)?

Deal with the above and I will teach Chandre Dharmawardana Tamil Names from my very limited knowledge.

I am sure someone quite knowledgeable like Native Vedda would have seen the American Seminary Sign Board in pictures, and would know all about the history of Jaffna College.
So putting a twist into this placename, designed to restate history is not going to succeed in this case as there is too much ground data.

      Jaffna College
Jaffna College was initially the Batticotta Seminary and was established in Vaddukoddai in 1823 by the American Ceylon Mission (ACM). The seminary’s mission was to convert the community to Christianity.
The seminary subsequently closed in 1855. In 1871, alumni of the Batticotta Seminary and other local Christians led a campaign to re-open the seminary, and in 1871 Jaffna College was opened on the former seminary site.

When you want to determine the history of a place, or a place name, you don’t do semantics by looking at பலம் and பழம் or பளம் etc. Instead you look at literary records, historical works of Portuguese, Dutch and British writers, sign boards from the period, property deeds from the period, dispatches by British and Dutch government officials etc.
      They all point to Battakotte.

If Vattakottai was the old name, the Dutch would have written it in their maps as Wattakottai as the will not be rendered with a a V in the Dutch language because that is pronounced F in dutch.
On the other hand, the B is correctly rendered as a B in Dutch maps. This can be verified by looking at other place-names in Dutchmaps where V, W and B occur. There is not even ONE record with the name Vattakottai in refernce to what is now called Vaddukoddai in Tamil.
      Best regards.

How about using some common sense, etymology, tradition, usage, ………………. for example what is the difference between Bandakka and Vendakkai (lady’s finger or okra).
How did Vendakkai become Bandakka or Bandakka become Vendakkai?

I want you to think, think hard, …………
What is the difference between பலம் and பழம் or பளம்?

Have you heard of Pattukkottai (பட்டுக்கோட்டை)?

I raise these questions for reasons I will explain later because Chandre Dharmawardana believes he is an expert on everything. I also think you are also falling into his interpretation of his own sham history and linguistic history.

I am worried of these new wordsmiths (that is what they think they are) dragging Sinhala language into disrepute eventually taking the people to national oblivion.

The nationalistically motivated Tamils believe Tamil Language is 50,000 years old, a ridiculous claim which has no basis and their brethren Champika Ranawake believes Sinhalese discovered ZERO.

By the way my amateur anthropologist Tamil friend once told me authoritatively that he believed Battaramulla was an ancient settlement. His etymological research sound quite possible. According to him Paththar Moolai (goldsmith corner) had evolved over many millennia into Battaramulla. I thought it was a fascinating discovery.

Jaffna has evolved into Yarlpaanam- because according to Pandya history many of the residence were practising and card carrying members of yahapalanaya.

        PS
Battaramulla is a suburb of the city of Colombo, situated 5.2 miles from the City Centre at Colombo Fort.

Native Vedda’s example of “Battaramulla” shows clearly why using only etymology can lead to incorrect conclusions.

It is necessary to look at literary records, maps etc., and see how or what was used by the people. The Name of a place is what the majority of people, people living there and what the rest of the world calls it. A place-name can have two names in two languages,
London or Londre. So if the Tamil people want to call it Vattakottai they can do so, but the Sinhalese can use the name that makes sense to them.
          .

“but the Sinhalese can use the name that makes sense to them.”

Let Sinhalese use any name that makes sense to them. It shouldn’t bother others. However people should be alarmed when Sinhala/Buddhist racists make changes to place names, constitution, security policy, language policy, right to sing national anthem in their chosen language, land policy, religious policies, ……

Like Chandre Dharmawardana his fellow racists have their own hidden agenda to complete based on sham history, sham etymology, sham archaeology, sham literature, ……………. in order to hit the bottom.

These racists will never let the people live in peace.

How about using some common sense, etymology, tradition, usage, ………………. for example what is the difference between Bandakka and Vendakkai (lady’s finger or okra).

How did Vendakkai become Bandakka or Bandakka become Vendakkai? By the way Okra is known as Vendakkai in Tamil Nadu as well. Do you think the vegetable and its name originated from this island, taken to Tamil Nadu by the itinerant Sinhala/Buddhist monks, and the name evolved from Bandakka to Vendakkai over long period of time?

The moral of the story is don’t listen to the racists with a fascist agenda.

Can we get an explanation from the author on how come Cambridge educated Gamini Dissanayake’s name was permanently connected with inhuman activity of burning down the historical Jaffna library?

What kind of educated person would even think about burning down a library?

Sad reality is that all communities in SL regardless of the social/economic status are still living in parallel worlds!

Dr. Chandre Dharmawardana you are a bloody shame…
…ISIS is believed to have one foot in Sri Lanka…thanks to Sinhal racism and corrupt Sinhala politicial leaders ….

….all you can do is pedal further Sinhalese racism twisting the origin of the name of Vaddukottai ..
    ……………..
..and then you go on to state ….”Educated Tamil parents with liberal values could not understand why their well educated children joined violent Eelamist racist movements. “

    ————
how many educated Tamil parents have you spoken to …?
Intellectual Tamils joined and/or supported LTTE in large numbers after JR’s flagship ..the 1983 ..massacre of Tamils.
    ………………
in contrast the Muslims always sat on the fence and and never went through a racial oppression and violence s like the Tamils…..
    ……..
.it is so disappointing and bloody shame that the Sinhalese scholars like you and Sinhalese politicians ….have not learnt anything in the last 30 years and in particua since Easter Sunday ,,,,and are still exploiting the situation and pedaling more racism…..
    ——————-
    God help Sri Lanka
….on the other hand which God?
…even they seems to have given up

[It will be more useful to explore why supposedly ‘highly educated’ persons indulge in falsehoods and distortion of history to serve not-very-noble ends]

Oh it is so simple and that is what one calls “well educated”. These morons who posses some degree or diploma from some cheap unis or technical colleges call them as “educated”. Guy one need not go to any school or Uni to become an “educated” person. If one can use his logic, common sense, rational outlook and fair unbiased thinking then he is educated. Our good for nothing universities are churning out so called “educated men and women” cannot even piss straight. Look at this Chandre Dostharaya who portrays himself as “educated” and just see his lies, imagination, delusions and racism and he takes cover under “educated dostharaya’! There are so so so many like you both in SL and elsewhere who are marauding like educated elite churning out lies, fabrication and hatred. Mother Lanka, I am certain, will do well with our uneducated modayas and idiots instead of these so called “educated dostharayas”! I even wonder whether this dostharaya is in SL or elsewhere.

    Dr. Chandre
” Many educated Arabs do not believe that the 9/11 World Trade Center attack was done by Arab Kamikazes.”
    What do you believe?
Just in case, here are some facts, just some, for your consideration.
    1. There are several groups under 9/11 Truth movement. like Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, 9/11 Truth, Scholars for 9/11 Truth, Scholars for 9/11 Truth & Justice etc. These groups have thousands of members and almost totally Non-Arab. Isn’t it clear that there are MANY Educated Non-Arabs who do NOT believe in the Official STORY about 9/11? Of course, the Educated Arabs and non-Arabs rely on the Facts provided by the Educated non-Arabs from various Truth Organisations
    2. Five of the 9/11 alleged Saudi hijackers were found ALIVE later. Does this tell you anything about the Official STORY of 9/11?
    3. The Internet edition of the Jerusalem Post reported on 12th Sep 2001, “The Israeli foreign ministry has collected the names of 4,000 Israelis believed to have been in the areas of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon at the time of the attack.” Yet only one Israeli was killed at the WTC and two were reportedly killed on the “hijacked” aircraft.
Of course, this report was widely disputed but Bret Stephens, the Jerusalem Post’s editor-in-chief wrote in 2003, “I cannot say. What I can say is that there was no mistake in our reporting.”
There is also the incident involving 5 Israelis, believed to be Mossad agents, who were filming the Burning WTC from a nearby building who were arrested but who were subsequently released and deported to Israel. Doesn’t all this mean an Israeli, obviously Mossad, connection to 9/11?
    4. The alleged master-mind, Bin Laden, was hiding in a cave in Afghanistan when 9/11 happened. He was also sick and ailing.

The last part of my comment is missing. I think, it was something like the following.

“Is it possible for a man in this condition to plan and execute a precision attack like 9/11 on targets, including the Pentagon, thousands of miles away, in the most Powerful and most Secure country in the world?”
