Why I Support Ranil

By Mangala Samaraweera –

Mangala Samaraweera MP

It is indeed a quirk of destiny that the very person who initiated the ‘Ranilta Be’ ( Ranil can’t) poster prior to the Presidential election of 1999 should now be writing this article explaining why I believe that Ranil Wickramesinghe ‘can do it.’ My reasoning, however, behind both these actions remain the same. In 1999, during President Kumaratunge’s re-election bid,we recognised Ranil as a strong and formidable candidate whose credibility needed to be questioned as a part of the strategy to secure the second term: in 2013, he still remains, in my view the  only formidable liberal democratic alternative to the chauvinistic, increasingly authoritarian Rajapakse kleptocracy.

The whole country is suffering today for choosing a leader based purely on his populist appeal. Despite  being aware of the many inadequacies of Mahinda Rajapaksa to become a  national leader and his lacklustre performance as a cabinet minister for nearly twelve years, the SLFP unanimously endorsed Mahinda as the Presidential candidate simply because of his appeal to ‘the gallery’. In the absence of a political track record based on intellectual or governance excellence he was marketed as a genial ‘action man’ and even his moustache had to be projected as a symbol of his leadership qualities during the campaign.

Eight years into the Rajapaksa Presidency, the country is at last waking up from its hypnotic slumber to the stark realities of electing such a inept and inefficient person to lead the country. The economy is in shambles, the rule of law is confined to the pontifications of the President and his secretary brother,  the family tree has embraced all branches of the state machinery including the treasury, cheap public relations gimmicks come in the guise of good governance and the regime, recalling Nehru’s famous statement of nationalism being ‘ the last resort of the scoundrel’, is unashamedly fanning the flames of communal and religious disharmony in order to distract the attention away from the increasing hardships the people have to face despite the end of the war four years ago. The country is also facing international isolation and the President seems very keen to form an axis of pariah nations with his newly found friends in Belarus, Uganda, Swaziland, Sudan etc. Sri Lanka is not only moving in an authoritarian direction but it has also become a fully fledged kleptocracy. Under the Rajapaksa regime the President is now not only the commander in chief of the armed forces, he is also the editor in chief of all media in Sri Lanka.

As the Campaign Manager for Mahinda Rajapksa in 2005 (when many of the present vociferous acolytes of the ‘Chintanaya’ were working against or sabotaging the campaign), my conscience says that I too must share the burden of guilt for paving the way for such a disastrous leadership. In fact, I apologised to the nation from the Kalubowila Hospital in January 2009, the day Lasantha Wickrametunge was killed. Four years later, my resolve to undo this great wrong I have done in supporting Mahinda in 2005 is even stronger but I feel I have to be more cautious in my support for the next presidential candidate as the country cannot afford yet another populist autocrat. Once bitten twice shy!

The next person whom we entrust the destiny of our country must have the experience and the vision to boldly change the catastrophic direction in which the country is heading today. We need a leader who has the courage of his convictions to abolish the executive Presidential system: a leader who can establish a meritocracy in place of the nepotism we have today; a leader who is not tainted with corruption and a proven track record in economic and administrative management; a non communal leader who can give leadership to a multi ethnic multi religious Sri Lankan identity: a leader who can rally the international community behind our country’s development. In short the next leader of Sri Lanka should be an effective, efficient and invisible leader a la Lee Kuan Yew ( the man not the system) and not an ubiquitous demagogue smiling down at you from every bill board in the country. The only leader who fits the bill in the present arid political landscape in my view  is Ranil Wickramesinghe.

While many people would agree with me that Ranil would make a good if not an excellent leader for our country, some question his ability to win a Presidential elections quoting the umpteen number of mainly staggered elections won by the PA/UPFA since 1994. In a winner takes all electoral system where the odds are heavily stacked against the opposition, especially at provincial and local government elections, the UNP has suffered many setbacks just as the SLFP did prior to 1994.  While the party leadership must be held accountable for such defeats, the party electoral organisers are equally if not more accountable for the electoral failure in their respective seats. However, Ranil Wickramesinghe in his personal capacity has proved himself to be the best vote catcher in the UNP during this period. In fact Ranil scored the most amount of votes for the UNP  in recent times in the 2005 Presidential elections and he was short of a mere 126,000 votes from outright victory and only short of 23,000 votes from a second count. Just as Ranasinghe Premadasa won the 1989 Presidential elections thanks to the JVP enforced boycott in the south , Mahinda Rajapaksa grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat in 2005, thank to the LTTE enforced boycott in the North.

Not only has Ranil continuously scored the highest preferential votes in the Colombo district but during the last round of Muncipal and local government election Ranil as the District leader along with Ravi Karunanayake spearheaded the Colombo Muncipal Council election campaign resoundingly defeating the government campaign led  by the President,Namal and even Gothabaya who campaigned shamelessly in violation of not only the election laws but also the Establishment Code for civil servants. In many of the electorates led by party dissidents who want to oust the leader for not winning elections, the UNP vote fell below 25%, most notably Tissmaharama where the UNP got a mere 20%.

A united party with a well oiled election machinery which can deliver the UNP block vote to the ballot box is a sine qua non for victory. In order to do so we urgently need is a genuine commitment for victory  by our leadership as a whole. We first need to energise the party rank and file at grassroots level as the UNP still has, despite the mass scale defections, the largest single party base. In order to do so, the leaders at the second and third levels must  not only want to share the spoils of victory but also to share the pain of successive defeats and energetically  implement the reorganisation programme of the UNP leader in their respective electorates. Fifth columnists both within and outside the party must be exposed and a disciplined party is yet another prerequisite for victory. The UNP has also an added advantage in Ranil Wickramesinghe’s leadership: he has the most astute media sense and is one of the best political campaign coordinators I have met since working with Chandrika Kumaratunge in 1993.

The next Presidential candidate must also be able to win the trust and confidence of the Tamil and Muslim communities who are feeling increasingly marginalised under the present regime. The minority vote base will be a key deciding factor at the national level and as such we should not take the minorities for granted. We must reposition the UNP on the founding principles of the late D.S. Senanayake based on his vision for a multi ethnic society. In this context too, I believe that Ranil Wickramesinghe will be much more acceptable to the minority communities than many of the other Presidential aspirants both within and outside the party.

The recent provincial council elections have also given two strong messages to the rest of the country. The people of the North have proven beyond any doubt that the Rajapaka regime is not invincible. Despite the blatant violations of election laws and the use of the full might of the military to disrupt the elections, the northerners proved wrong those who say voting is futile believing that the government knows to win elections at any cost (computer ‘jilmart’ etc.): the people came out in numbers to vote and the government suffered a resounding defeat. In the South, where many UNP supporters refrained from voting on flimsiest of excuses from the weather to the capacity of its leaders, the northerners in some places walked miles in the absence of any public transport in the scorching sun to register their protest against the government.

The silver lining of the results of the Central and North Western province is that it clearly shows that the government is not as strong as they would like people to believe in the face of a combined opposition onslaught. For example, the combined opposition vote in Puttalam is 40.9%, Matale 40%, Kandy 44.2% which shows thar victory is within reach at a Presidential / General election in these districts. There is distinct need for wide opposition platform going beyond ideological  and other personal differences and the common candidate must be able to command the UNP block vote, the minority vote and the increasingly disgruntled SLFP vote base. The JVP and the Sarath Fonseka factor must be also made to understand the importance of coming together if they are genuine about wanting to defeat this evil regime. A third candidate at the next Presidential election will certainly be a mere appendage of the Rajapaksa campaign to split the opposition vote and as such, would surely be considered a ‘fifth column’. Ranil Wickramesinghe already has created a space for such a common platform in ‘Samagi’  based on 10 points where all those who oppose the authoritarian direction of this government can come together. Although, the question of a common candidate for the next Presidential Election has not even been discussed, the leader most of these vastly differing parties will be most comfortable with is Ranil Wickramesinghe from all the possible contenders in the horizon.

It is also imperative that the UNP be reorganised as a non violent ‘resistance movement’ if we are to democratically challenge this regime. The Rajapaksa regime have introduced informants and fifth columnists to all opposition parties and networks and even certain media institutions who appear to be sympathetic to the opposition are manipulated by the defence secretary. As Ahmed Salah,a key activist in Egypt and one of the key architects of the Arab spring says, early attempts to challenge the regime did not succeed because of the regime’s infiltrator’s within. The only way to fight infiltration was to run the activities like a resistance movement.

As William J. Dobson writes in ‘The dictators learning curve – Inside the global battle for democracy’ ( essential reading for anyone who wants to understand what is happening in our country in a global context), ‘the model for a successful democratic movement wasn’t a democracy; it was a military operation.’ As Gene Sharp, a leading thinker on the strategy of nonviolent conflict observes in ‘From dictatorship to democracy’, democratic movements, even if non violent, need to be as strategic as a military unit might be.

In this context too, I believe that Ranil Wickramesinghe is the only person in the UNP at present, who has the resilience and the strategic presence of mind to face the ruthless onslaught against the next Presidential candidate who will dare to  challenge the dynastic dreams of the ruling family.

Despite all the views to the contrary , these are the reasons why I believe Ranil can lead this country out of this quagmire of hopelessness.Ranil can do it and Ranil will do it  but all of us must stop being armchair critics and extend a helping hand.

‘.. The only leader who fits the bill in the present arid political landscape in my view is Ranil Wickramesinghe…”

Golden words of truth unfortunately buried for decades to the detriment of the country and its people. Hope at least now people will realize it.

It is only an improvement in Education at grassroots level that will bring about a change in Government. It is easy to sway ill-educated voters with appeals to their Emotions, rather than with appeals to their Intelligence.

Ranil Wickramasinghe is a DICTATOR in the UNP. He is not honest or an intellect tho he may appear to be so the hairdresser Mangala. Ranil’s performance during the illegal impeachment of the CJ shows that he is not a strategic thinker nor can he make a coherent argument..
Ranil is actually worse than Mahinda Rajapassa who is Lanka’s first military dictator in waiting and has rotted Lanka’s POLITICAL CULTURE in the country and naturalized dictatorship, cronyism and intellectual and moral corruption within the 2 main political parties..
Today it is possible to say that Sri Lankan politicians are the SCUM OF THE EARTH because their leadership is CORRUPT to the core.
What is worse is that COLOMBO CIVIL SOCIETY – singularly lacking in imagination or principles – has perpetuated the myth that there is no alternative to Ranil in the UNP.. Of course Sajith is a big moron but Ranil got rid of many of the smarter people by humiliating and manipulating them.. Indeed, Ranil’s AUTHORITARIANISM and dictatorship within the UNP has been supported by a myopic, self-serving Colombo intelligentsia…

Mangala Samaraweera is paying penance for what he did to Ranil when he was misguided in supporting CBK and MR then. He has realized his folly and is determined to make amends now. I believe if Mangala can make up his mind to support Ranil after caricaturing RW as Mr. Bean and spreading ‘Ranilta Ba’, now Mangala realizes the Frankenstein Monster he helped to create in MR. If Mangala can make up his mind to support Ranil, I fail to understand why the Moderates cannot do so at a crucial juncture to save this country from Family Bandism that will further ruin this country. It is absolute Hypocrisy of those anti-Ranils to tolerate the Corrupt UNP members in the Cabinet of MR, but not some one as Ranil a non offensive, decently behaved, Honest Educated Gentleman as Ranil Wickremasinghe as the Leader. I can understand the rabid JVPers in the country having such an attitude. But cannot certainly understand why the UNPers and the SLFPers continue to do so as there is no difference between these two Parties anymore. I hope and trust sanity will prevail among the masses, once MR will be forced to Devolve Power under the 13th Amendment to the TNA next year 2014 for MR’s own survival.

Hindsight is a good indication to predict the future. The leader of the opposition does not possess the killer instinct to rule a country like Sri Lanka. Most of the population are so gullible and would fall pray to a mere promise of nothing. This inherent weakness is a result of the philosophy practised for years and the realisation of it; is discussed extensively in these forums. The present rulers are taking advantage of this in style. If Bollywood was ever to chose an award for the best political actor for deception, the Sri Lankan Ruler deserves it without any opposition.

The author was wrong once and could get it wrong again.

Will Ranil stop supermarkets being forced to buy sub standard army grown vegetables, look at just tomatoes, in the past we had beef tomatoes and vine tomatoes as in civilised countries now look at the rubbish left to rot on shelves?
Will Ranil also sort out the Colombo road works mess, with messy work started in different locations but none finished?
Complicated pattern block paving messed up by inexperienced workers.
Go to Bangkok or Singapore to look at roads and public transport?

Very well said and argued, Mangala. Another great trait of Ranil that will serve him as a good leader is that he has a perfect sense of emotional management. He has because of this survived with Buddhist calmness and tranquility all the unfair assaults by his enemies both within and without the party.

Well, Ranil’s liberal democratic credentials are fine. Being an alternative to the chauvinistic and authoritarian Rajapakse kleptocracy. is also ok. Why then people not voting for you?

Its crearly Ranils association with TNA isnt it? If you are indeed “liberal”, the first thing you need is to reject chauvinist and cateist TNA first. Its not Rajapaske who left Ranil and UNP in a cesspit. It was TNA wasnt it? Get togeather with the govt and sink TNA to an oblivion. Then Ranil might have a chance of winning.

    Dear Mr M.

Why I cannot support Ranil is that the general Malaise that has seized the nation with intelligent people fleeing the land, the north and east almost shorn of its middle class citizens, the flight into exile of several journalists, the obvious subversion of the rule of law democratic and academic processes, the removal of social spaces for democratic discourse and the intimidation of dissidents highlights the need for existing political parties, as well as new ones that may emerge, to understand the influence that organizational structures and their internal processes have on the generation, sustenance and functioning of a tolerant, inclusive, pleasant, helpful, happy and non violent society. In this respect I search in vain for a political party that has the following structures that I think are required for the above. The processes can be looked at later if necessary.

    1. A founding member or group of founders not exceeding twenty in number who are clearly identified as such and a constitution drawn up by such founder or founding members which shall stipulate that such founding members shall form the governing body to be replaced on their resignation, retirement or demise by persons chosen by consensus from the members of the electoral college.

    2. A membership that is selected on the basis of a subscription to the clearly stated political ideology of the party amongst any other requirements as may be stipulated in the constitution.

    3. A well thought out and widely discussed policy framework and electoral manifesto drawn up and approved by this membership well in advance of any election and maintained as a party document that is constantly developed through discussion.

    4. An electoral college to which those who wish to represent the party are admitted after having satisfied the party as to their moral integrity, ethical values, familiarity with the parties policies and program and exceptional behavior in the past and they will be trained in parliamentary procedures and processes and the skills required to advance the policies of the party in parliament. Needless to say those with criminal records and a demonstrated bent towards violence, immorality and unethical behavior will be prohibited from applying to or being accepted to this electoral college.

    5. The electoral college will train candidates for different elected bodies.

    6. The electoral college will submit its list of recommended candidates for each electoral body to the membership for approval.

    7. A shadow parliament which will respond critically to every move of the government clearly articulating the parties alternative and the reasons why the party advocates these alternatives.

    8. A proper media arm that will consistently advise the public as to its activities and position on current issues and the actions that it advocates.

    9. A scientific propaganda wing that engages in marketing the policies of the party and in the task or projecting a vision of what the nation would look like if the policies advocated by the party are implemented.

    10. A cultural wing which will encourage the development of cultural forms of expression that are compatible with the policies of the party and disseminate these cultural forms through the holding of regular cultural events through which the party can engage the citizenry.

    11. An Academic wing that will identify, develop and advocate technologies and behavioral models that are compatible with the policies and projected national vision of the party.

    12. A human resource development and training school which will train people in how to conduct themselves and how to relate to each other in order to realize the policies advocated by the party.

If your UNP goes in this direction please do let me know.

      WOW! Mr. Nirmalan Dhas,

Could not agree with you less.

You have laid out what the silly UNP needs to do. In order to have a shot at victory.

Unfortunately, my guess is your wise sugggestions will be ignored.

Both leading parties are family run, highly corrupt groupings. They are more than happy to continue with the status quo, if they can.

Both parties exist for cronies and for their henchmen.

Sri Lanka is cursed by these two parties. Sri Lanka needs real change.

      Cheers!

Agree with MS Ranil is far better option than the incumbant despotic family rule.

There will be a marginal progress in Sri Lanka with such a change.

However, Sri Lanka needs a seachange. Not a useless marginal change.

I see no leaders either within UNP or SLFP who can deliver such real change. These two organisations are inherently corrupt.

Ranil might be better compared to despotic MR. Yet, he is a product of the existing corrupt Sri Lankan political culture. Not a good thing at all. When we are looking for change.

Nepotism will continue even under Ranil. Though to a lesser degree. Just look at UNP’s so called hillarious, totally non-representative Working Committee.

Sri Lanka has excellent talent for leadership. These two leading corrupt political parties choke all such talent from emerging.

So that, they can hold on to this disastrous status-quo. We must change that.

    Cheers!

Ben Hurling.Ranil and MR are in the same class. Make no mistake, it is from the frying pan to fire with either Ranil or Sajith.Let us get rid of the UNP,SLFP,JHU,SLMC and all the other monkeys in this parliament and start afresh

Ranil can definitely do it if we can make the grassroots yakkos go and vote intelligently. It has always been the media that has brainwashed the voters into thinking that MR is patriot and Ranil a traitor. MR is nothing but a lying crook who played his cards right and was successful in bribing the LTTE into preventing the Tamils from voting. Nothing lasts forever and MRs days in the sun will end one day.

Sir! If Ranil is the best option to fight the President at the next election , why did you support Sarath Fonseka at the last election? What we do see today is, the gradual disintegration of the UNP due to intransigence of RW . Fighting and shooting in broad daylight between factions of the UNP on streets will surely exacerbate the downfall of the UNP.
Definitely this is bad for democracy.
    Is Premadasa better than Ranil?
Perhaps he may get more votes but he will be a worse President if he is ever elected.
    Why?
He has no vision. He has no policies. He has never made a serious talk on serious topics to the best of my knowledge. He is good at speaking only to the gallery. His sole aim is to become the President of the country.Has he ever talked on good governance, human rights, or rights and problems of the Tamils or Muslims?
Then, Is Sarath Fonseka the best option?
I honestly believe we never ever should elect a military person to the highest job of the country He will be a ruthless ruler and democracy will be his anathema.
    So, What’s the option left?
A FRONT OF ALL POLITICAL PARTIES (Of course SLFP won’t come but many members of it will join) should be formed with the objective of forming a PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT FOR TWELVE MONTHS in order to pass a new constitution which , inter alia, abolishes executive presidency, and proportional representation system and guarantee democracy, good governance, human rights, independent judiciary and justice for citizens

Forget about the RW and whether he should continue as the leader of the UNP.

Just open your eyes and observe how many people (see the list) were forced to quit as party leader in the UK until young dynamic David Cameron was elected to the head of the party by party membership and then to office of the PM by the people in Britain.

    1. John Major resigned after voted out and then

    2. William Hague was elected to the leadership by the party members and with his failure

    3. Ian Duncan Smith was elected to the party leadership and then with the defeat

    4. Michel Howard was elected and finally

    5. young dynamic David Camaron was elected to lead the party and the British people elected him to be their prime minister.

What more you want Mr MS

By your own admission you are were not truthful then.
“during President Kumaratunge’s re-election bid,we recognised Ranil as a strong and formidable candidate whose credibility needed to be questioned” hence you coind the phrase “Ranilta be” knowing very well it wasn’t true.

And you expect us to believe you now…? More likely could it be that you think you have a better chance of getting a plum minister-ship under Ranil than any other candidate?

Yes we find it odd that mangala is now following ranil because we all thought that mangala was a front runner ! Any way let the two of them sort it out in a cozy boys only bar ! Mangala says he was wrong when he followed Srima, Chandrika, mahinda and sarath fonseka. Why should he be right now ? Mangala saw any merit in Ranil only when Mahinda sacked him from the government for being disloyal. He and his pal Tiran were conducting a dirty campaign against MR while openly swearing loyalty to him . Mangala is credited with many undemocratic actions when he was with Chandrika including using the lake house and government TV to slander the UNP. He also has never explaind how he accumulated so much wealth when those who knew him before he became a minister know what a struggle it was for him to even pay the rent for the small house he had in colombo.Mangals you are unprincipled and only talking through desperation. We all know you were a fashion designer with very little education or even intellectual abilities. Ocourse you were a ruthless operator who had no qualms in using and abusing government resources for political ends. You also specilaized in slander campaigns the main victim of which was Ranil then. Please get out of the politcal scene which you have dishonoured and abused for so long.

Ranil is the only moderate leader in SL.

He has his weaknesses. Everyone has weaknesses. Look at the Rajafucksas. How many weaknesses they have?

    What are the other options?
    JVP – extremis.
    SLMC – extremist and racist.
    TNA – racist
    Fonseka party – crazy

    Only UNP can save SL.

Then again is there a place for moderates in SL and UNP?

    Sigh!

Ranil is the right choice for UNP in this crisis situation. earlier Presidential elections were rigged and well planed victory for MR. first time when MR was elected Ranil was the winner but unfortunately with the well planned high level arrangement with LTTE Northern voters didn’t vote the election. if their was a free and fair election MR would have been the Opposition Leader and ranil would have been the president.

From the angle of the better of the worst in today’s distorted political culture it can be weakly argued Ranil may be ahead in the UNP, which he, unaware or deliberately, weakened to serve his own personal interests. Mangala defending Ranil blaming “Party electoral organisers” for the successive crop of election failures is admission Ranil’s managerial skills are suspect. The truth is much of the failure of the UNP was due to Ranil’s autocratic attitudes in imposing individuals whom he choses arbitrarily – who eventually become disasters. In the NPC elections he chose a Colombo 7 lawyer who could hardly speak Tamil well in platforms, known for his mediocrity and total absence of grass-roots connections in the Jaffna District. The man simply isolated established and growing UNP strength there and contributed to the eventual embarrassing performance. Ranil wasted a useful National List slot on the man. It must be said, however, the man has been a loyal UNPer for long and deserves even a
Cabinet post but totally unsuitable to be placed in charge of advancing electoral fortunes of the party.
It was also so in the performance of the UNP in the Central Province.
Once again he miscalculated another of Indian origin to be the ideal man to bring in the Estate Tamil votes. A further Nationalist MP slot was wasted on this reticent, Colombo-based lacklustre person who hardly had any influence worth talking among circles of recent Indian origin in the hill country. His only qualification was he was at one time close to the younger unpredictable Thondaman. The bleak performance of the UNP in the CP, unsurprisingly, was absolutely dismal.

Adamancy is one of cold Ranil’s main weaknesses. He should make joint decisions in the choice of leaders country-wide. One’s private preferences -eunuch or not – recedes into the background if the people chosen deliver. If the wrong choice is made critics begin to unearth all sorts of ammunition as attack-ware to point out glaring abuses.

Mr. Samaraweera, you would say and do any thing to stay in power and gain power???? You are saying that you lied to the people. You were one person who with Basil ,who gave money to Prabhakaran ,to buy arms to kill our brothers and sisters. Now you are telling us again that you know better than us? Ranil has eliminated any one ,good who would be a threat to him. Get rid of Ranil and I am sure we will find a good leader joining the UNP.
So go home and take Ranil with you please.

If Mangala Samaraweera and LW had their way back in 2007 in toppling this government during the war, Prabakaran would still be alive and we would still be under the terrorism of LTTE.

Mangala said Sarath Fonseka was not even fit to lead the Salvation Army only to turn around and support the very same man for presidency at the next election.

I would not be surprised in spite of what he says here if he were to turn around in a few months time and support MR or the UNP “reformists”.

Ranil does not possess the charisma that is required in politicians of the developing world to give him and his party a chance to win power. The unsophisticated electorate that Sri lanka has will only vote for people who promise them heaven and earth and say it with panache and charisma.

Ranil may be an uncorrupt, educated, intelligent and able leader but he lacks the ability to unite his party and convince the electorate that he is the one who will be able to give them health, wealth, peace and justice.

The UNP ios so fragmented and demoralised I think there is any point in keeping Ranil as a leader and the party members and supporters should consider bringing someone from outside the party to lead them. The TNA did it with Justice Wigneswaran so I can’t see why the UNP won’t be able to do it.

    Mr. Samaraweera

This article was not written by you, because you don’t have the acumen to do so. Most likely your akka wrote it.
Anyway, your opinion at this juncture should be transparently self-serving. The very actions you narrate are those of a self-serving acolytes and now you accuse others of being what you have so capably? How classically Sri Lankan. Only see the shit in others!

Upul – Most leading politicians around the world have good speech-writers around them. Although politicians themselves do not write each and every word their thoughts are carefully embodied in the speech – often corrected by the politician himself. The Kennedys came out with some of the finest speeches in political history thanks to the assistance from their aides like Ted Sorensen, McGeorge Bundy (?) et al. Some of Mangala’s speeches in recent times are quite inspiring, rich in prose and diction. One hopes Rajapakses will be at least remotely lucky.

Very articulate and succinctly put ! When Mangala Samaraweera was instrumental in getting rid of the pavement hawkers from Borella junction, just before Ranil’s shortlived Government took office, I mentioned to a UNP strongman of the time that the UNP should try to recruit Samaraweera.

I was scoffed at but if that was done Ranil’s Government may have lasted longer and certainly Mahinda would never have made it.

I am glad that this has finally happened and that Mangala seems to have learn’t something over the years.

Is the country and opposition so bankrupt that only RW is able to save us. Our leaders have become a cult whereas in other countries leaders come and go. Talent and merit must be allowed to grow and prosper. I agree with the views of Nirmalan Dhas, we need a proper system for political leadership to emerge and develop who will be of good moral character and populist background.

Who else can do with Mr Samaraweera’s support?.

Perhaps the new CM can nominate Samaraweeccra as their choice for the Governor’s post as a santhosam for his valuable services to the Diaspora agenda.

But then would the hardcore Hindu Vellalas accept him?.

Ranil may be a good manager/administrator. But he is not a good politician. He just cannot win elections. This is the sad truth. He is better off in the private sector. Sooner the UNP realizes and admits this, the better for the party.

If Ranil is to win elections, he must shed the Colombo 7 Royal College boy image and attitude like his uncle JRJ. But the problem is that Ranil is too stubborn to admit his shortcomings. Realizing these, MR has run circles round RW. As a politician, MR is light years ahead of RW.

    These are the sad truths.

If Ranil cannot lead an effective opposition how can he lead a Govt? If he is not giving effective opposition personalities like Dayasiri/Sajith/Karu..ect positions, how do you expect that he will form a good cabinet? The axis of evil preventing a UNP comback is Ranil ,Colombo Society and the Working committee (appointed by Ranil). When they loose the elections the People of the Rural areas are “dumb”,”Fools” and “ignorant”. When they win elections the Village folk are the most inteligent people.!!! ….. 1977 they were intelligent 2005 they are fools ???????? … UNP is going down the drain due to such foolish thinking!!!

    Dushantha,

There was a time, when Colombo knew best! That was when the Gamayas were modayas and the hamu mahattaya was screwing everyone’s Nonas.

Today, politics is local and Mr. Wickremesinghe does not have the touch or feel of the population at large. This guy has lived on the government ‘dole’ from the time he came into parliament in 77. You think he is ready to give all that up, to understand the masses? He wants the rest of the idiots and crooks around him to do the touching and feeling, and get him the votes. Unfortunately for him, the idiots also mature and figure out his game plan, slowly.

He is now left with the crooks who have no where else to go, because there are cleverer crooks on the government’s side!!!

Dinuk, what ever others say, you are 100% right.I will not vote with Ranil, purely because of his past, starting with Gonawela Sunil, which was a dirty act to pardon a rapist of a young girl,( incidentally this was the first of a series of infamous acts that brought this country to the lawless state that we are today,)the sale of public assets during his tenure as Prime Minister ( What ever people say the act of this Govt in repossessing the sugar industry was right _ I accept the reasons for doing so may be questionable), his lack of continuous interest in any given subject ( it like a man satiated after a bout of sex), his inability to use the parliament as a source to make public the Govt’s mistakes ( accepted that any motion against the Govt will be defeated by the steam roller majority, but Ranil must present a substantive motion so that these wrong deed are on record-Did he ever bring a no confidence motion against the Govt over the prevailing lawlessness?)his not taking a principled stand on many issues, the impeachment of the CJ, the Kunu Balu Sena, the attack on the minorities especially the Muslims and the Christians, his involvement with the attacks on the Kelaniya University Students, involvememt of Ravi on the attacks on the Jayawardenpura University students attacks by Mahinda Wijayasekara on the Ruhunu University Students,he proposed a new constitution which was a pseudo constitution that does not deal with the means to safe guard the tax payer’s money ( that proposal was to counter Sobitha Hamuduruwo, Ranil’s bogus proposal left the MR govt in a happy slumber). You refer to Lasanth’s killing, what did Ranil do about that, he stuck his tail between the legs and ran.Only time he reacted was he was attacked by Vas Gunawardena, where he threatened to go to Geneva ( Is only his skin that is important what about the killings of other individuals?)If Ranil was a leader, then this Govt could have been restrained. Even a mild person like The GREAT DUDLEY SENANAYAKE would have kept this govt on their toes. When he was the Prime Minister, did he act as a leader. The uncouth behaviour of SB Dissanayake, Ravi karunanayake during cabinet meetings would have kept the wanathamulla drug addicts happy but not the cultured. My next thesis will WHY RANIL SHOULD BE THROWN INTO THE DUST BIN OF HISTORY.

Ranil as a leader- big joke.He runs away when there is a proble.During his period as the PM he was away nearly 60% of the time.He sabotaged Sarath Fonseka’s election campaign. That was at the latter stages when he found SF doing well.Even as a Leader of the opposition, how many time did he join the people who were demonstarting against the Govt-only once in the last 8 years.
I remember his election campaign vs CBK he acted as if he was the President. Why did he not hold a post mortem on Athukoral’s death.

UNP on the whole is been taken for a ride by Mangala. He knows jolly well that Ranil is not going to win in the future too. His modus operandi is to keep Ranil as leader for the moment, and at a latter stage to slowly introduce Cbk as the common candidate.
    Thereby undermining UNP’s total resolve.
Faster the UNP gets rid of Mangala the better it is.
