Why Is Gota So Stubborn?

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

I have never met the President but have friends who have, briefly at social occasions. They say he a pleasant fellow, well-spoken and with a smiling countenance we are familiar with from media photographs. Then why oh why does he dig himself into ridiculous holes and refuse to climb out after it is made clear that he has made a big mistake? I am referring to matters that are of no profit to the clan, therefore attribution of disreputable motives is not an explanation. I have four important matters which in the order they surfaced are:

Gota

1. The policy commitment that 70% of Sri Lanka’s electrical energy will be from renewable sources by 2030. Look, renewable-source energy is marvellous; if we replace every joule of fossil based energy by renewables we would be angels. But 70% is pie in the sky! If pigs could fly and elephants had wings we could have 70% (some nut-cases say 80%) electricity from renewables by 2030*. Even infant system planners know that the target is skewwhiff; but Gota won’t budge.

2. When the pandemic swept in he made Army Silva, who knows about as much about epidemiology and virology as my grandmother knows about quantum-computing, head the national covid task force. Ok, maybe at first Gota thought that he could go in with panzer divisions rolling and guns blazing, but soon enough it was clear that scientists must be in charge. Sure Army Silva etc. must be around as factotums to execute orders, but blokes who understand the subject must be in charge.

3. The completely unbelievable idiocy that every farmer, scientist, newspaper columnist and agronomist is tearing his/her hair about is the complete, wholesale and immediate ban on inorganic fertiliser and (?) agro-chemicals. This pronouncement is so weird that people are at a loss! But he has dug in and refuses rectify this giant gaffe. In Tamil they say “Nan pudicha muyaluku moondu kaal endal, moondu kaale thaan”. (I trust every educated Sri Lankan understands rudimentary spoken Tamil). Surely Gota knows it is a blunder. Why does he not correct it?

4. One big and possibly fatal matter is the foreign policy rock on which he seems determined sink his ship. Readers need no elucidation re the UNHRC, EU, US Congress and Indian knots he is entangling himself in. Worst, he is making Sri Lanka an embarrassment even to the Beijing leadership.

Why so many unnecessary cock-ups? It’s not as if the Paksa-clan was making a buck. People allege nothing like that regarding these four boo-boos. Four glaring but correctable blunders! Is he still misled by monumental donkeys in Viathmaga? The sway of snake oil vendors over the President brings to mind mad-monk Rasputin and Tsarina Alexandra. Honestly I haven’t a clue why he has put his neck in these four nooses and is pulling the ropes all by himself. Can any of you bright chaps explain these weird occurrences?

*Depending on technical advances and less daft presidential decrees, it is possible Sri Lanka can exceed 50% renewable sourced electricity within two decades. For now let us focus on at least 30% by 2030

WITH THEIR COMEBACK; WHAT BECAME CLEAR IS MLECHCHA POLITICS have ruined entire structures.
Besides, this has nothing to do with him or anyone being stubborn, but it is totally based on lack of experience and knowledge. So called man was adulated to be a”deliverer” score far behind the skills of “Sorysena”- as for me, it is similar to an example where an untrained pilot was appointed to do the job in a stormy weather. Or put it another way, an untrained vascular surgeon was expected to save a life from a patient suffering from a severe heart ailment.
–
And there are thugs and alleged high criminals on the street, that can have a big heart towards the poor. This means not necessarily that they can become good politcians. When it goes to do some good work with vaious kind of administrations being fully involved , it can only sabotage entire structures. Those thugs can do some good work but it is limited. Not all ministries and administrative bodies should not be attacked as ” they are all corrupted”.
–
And Gota and the like bunch have no such ” sure instint/Fingerspitzegefühl as a good politician”. Blant lies and acts based on lies would not last forever. The man who got the nomination to be the PE candidate was a illegal, so that the MaCo should be charged with an imprisonment not less than 10 long years.

It is not the stubborness but stupidity and lack of experience.
      :
How can he have the least sensitivity towards the nation, going back to the manner how he then treated former Army commander, FM Sarath Fonseka. Entire world stood against Rajakashes, louding that ” we had srilanken leaders, but criminal men of Rajapakshe nature were not produced in the past srilanka”: And also people around the globe would not forget the manner 52-day parlament and how those POHOTTUWA criminals behaves in that so called most noble place in a state. With all being known to the people, nevertheless to get them back to power should be connected either with the total ignorance/gulliblity or people total unawareness.

          Dear Rajash,
          :
This is becoming clear to even school going children today.
          :
Media mafia works fo rthe agendas of Rajapakshes. So making fake public perception is much easier to them. Just imagine, ” SURASAVIYA” was one of the good projects established by Prevoius GOOD GOVERNANCE govt. To that time, then oppostion, SLPP men were very against SURASAEVIYA… but today it has become the main life line for the people regardless of their status. The very same was with the OIL FORMULA introduced by Honourable Mangala Samaraweera going by world standards…. in Germany, it is being changed every minute.. not monthly.. so oil price reduction conessions we enjoy almost each time.
Tha tis the case also in neigbouring countries.
Ridiculously enough, LOCAL media together with RAJAPAKSEHS criminals, they promoted their anti-oil formula innuendos…. even if RAJAPKSHES filthy loads would drop down to the media.. they had been protests.. even SIVURU WEARING fake monks took the lead to support them…. with this being the reality in srilanka….. not a glimse of hope seen about the future of th ecountry…

      “Why Is Gota So Stubborn?”

……… because Sri Lanka is not 7/11 ……. when Mars Bars move off the shelves he has to restack them.

As head of state, SL ……. he doesn’t have to do that ……. he can just be ….. and do nothing.

Horses for courses …….. Isn’t this what people wanted? If not why elect him?

BTW Trump was stubborn too …… never admit fault and take a backward step …… Roy Cohen’s coaching.

It’s not about a nation …… but how a man is perceived.

Good ol’ Basil has a keen eye for Yankee politics …….. perhaps, not for language ……….

“BTW Trump was stubborn too …… never admit fault and take a backward step …… Roy Cohen’s coaching.”

What did Trump achieve within his 4 years ? Make him a clown to US-EU allies. I experienced, not many wanted to talk about him, because his estranged behaviour was not welcome by any civilized cultures.

        2

Exactly as Nimal said Trump too wanted his BS implemented but the Congress, judiciary and public checked him. Now the party and supporters are left defending him and his policies one such policy is “elections were hijacked”. Where as with Gotha Economy melt down is Wimal,s fault, fuel price hike – Gommanpilla, Covid – health ministry, lock down – epidemiologist, But war victory is solely his, same as Trump take all credit and leave accountability to rest. Now the Rajapaksa cabal and those 7 million who promoted such guy as Iron Man /strong man /Hitler will have to defend his policies. The architect behind this, Basil left country without notice so that he does not need to face questions and probably return as the new avatar “to save Lanka again “.

          Native,

There was a Russian poet …… who had some clever lines …… he published them in a book named “Nostalgia For The Future” …. I think

          I found him …….. https://www.nytimes.com/1996/04/27/style/IHT-in-new-russia-a-sellers-market-for-poets.html

“Children are the periscopes of the buried dead”

“Why do we always crawl backwards towards humanity …….. our arses looking like human faces”

Then ……. “Mary is pregnant again …….. yet again, the world is not ready”

That line reminds me of our present predicament …….. as a people/society we are not ready. ……. Rajapakses are not aliens fallen from the sky: they are a reflection of our society ……. the distilled essence of us as a people.

This is who we are, at this point in time.

You might think other people/societies are better, but not really. …….. America is a free country alright but a very unfree society …… where one is compelled to conform like robots ……

There is no country I would like to live than SL ……. but it drives me nuts!

When I think of SL …….. there is a civil war going in my head …….. which I can’t win or even lose!

          So I travel.

Everybody seems to want to get away to someplace
          Get away from themselves
I got a feeling if they found that someplace
They’ll want to go some place else.
Do we really want to go to Mars?
Do we ever really want to try?
I got a funny feeling if we get up there

Gota believes he has a responsibility by his people. They wanted a “strong leader” who would lead a “hamuda aanduwa”. When such a leader says something he must abide by it, never yielding an inch, especially to “minority community:” politicians.
    .
And so he plays his part.
    .
Where this is going to end, God alone knows, but Gota will consistently be firm.
    .
Two bits of evidence that Kumar is entering dotage: he’s getting fond of Gota. Says, ‘he’s a pleasant fellow, well-spoken and with a smiling countenance’, and then expects Sinhala_Man to understand rudimentary spoken Tamil.
    .
And I’ve been taught a lesson by my elder daughter. She picked up Tamil, and was locked up by the Police. So, I’ve never learnt any Tamil.
    .
I know the contradictions in the above paragraph, but it is something like the truth. It causes me much grief. There never was a need for guys like us to learn Tamil.
    .
Cicero, may the gods indeed destroy Gota!

      Dear S_M:

Gota’s perpetuation that “he has a responsibility by his people” is entirely a guise to his self-serving motives. Commenter Eratne has described Gotabaya’s motives precisely below.

I also think that to a great extent Gota planted and fertilised the seeds of his people’s desires and enriched the outcome to his advantage.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you have said. And I don’t want to say any more in case somebody reads more than is warranted by what I have said.
        .
However, let me tell you that although I don’t know Tamil, I ensured that my daughter had sufficient friends and other acquaintances to ensure that she learnt to use the language effectively.
        .
cugan, I once mentioned in parenthesis that your English was poor. I’ve been a teacher of English, and I was trying to draw attention to what was a fact. I later saw a long comment from you resenting that. I’m sorry I hurt you; that was not my intention. However, you have now used words which have strange connotations.

    “Why Is Gota So Stubborn?”
I am not saying this is Gota’s problem but more times than not they are ignorant and lack proper education.

“If pigs could fly and elephants had wings we could have 70% (some nut-cases say 80%) electricity from renewables by 2030*.”
Whether practical or not there are those that believe it. Did people really vote Sirima to power on her promise to bring rice from the moon??

“When the pandemic swept in he made Army Silva, who knows about as much about epidemiology and virology as my grandmother knows about quantum-computing”
What does the health minister know about epidemiology? If she knew would she make a fool of her self promoting Kurunagala tonic?

3 is the same as renewable energy. Ignorance and lack of proper education to think before making a decision.

“Worst, he is making Sri Lanka an embarrassment even to the Beijing leadership.”
This goes without saying the land of the supreme race is going around the world with a begging bowl. It even went Bangladesh.

If only he would be accountable and responsible to a higher authority like his creator God, he would not be like Lucifer who too wanted to be worshipped like God but was cast out of his heavenly role and became a deceiver and satanic destroyer of humans. The beauty of being obedient and in oneness is that he will receive supernatural strength imparted for his leadership role as well as receive mercy when he accepts his wrongdoing, as the universe is full of energy which when observed in quantum turns to matter. Karmic consequences are then forgiven to be able to live in freedom, instead of having to shamefully cover up past crimes with insecurity. Many rebels perish because of their ignorance. Where to after death matters.

Why Is Gota So Stubborn? It’s simple:

When he mercilessly killed hundreds of Sinhalese youth merely on suspicion, he believed that is the right thing to solve the JVP problem.

His innovative white van technique made opponents disappear in thin air with impunity. He believes that rule of law is conspiracy introduced by the West.

When he killed about 150, 000 innocent Tamils near the end of the war he believed that is the best way to solve the “Tamil problem”.

Majority community applauded these actions of his as the best solution to the problems. They believe that Gota is the man Buddha sent to make Sri Lanka pure Sinhalese Buddhist country. Bhikkus blessed him.

Now that he is at the helm he is convinced many times over that his beliefs in autocratic dastardly actions is the way to solve problems, especially those who oppose his beliefs.

To reconfirm his believes 6.9 million people voted for him.

Is it a surprise that he is stubborn? His convictions, like Hitler’s, make him passionate about his actions, and he knows he will get away with them with impunity.

‘When he mercilessly killed hundreds of Sinhalese youth merely on suspicion, he believed that is the right thing to solve the JVP problem.’

      I think that was Premadasa.

        Paul

        “I think that was Premadasa.”

The Actual killing of innocent Sinhalese started in 1971.

When second mass killing of innocent Sinhalese mainly the youth started in late 1987 it was JR who was running the show until January 1989. It was JR who first introduced the idea of “search and destroy” into security doctrine and provided justification and impunity to the mass murderers, in North and East in early 1980s. Later it was used in the South.

You also need to look at Athulath S**t Bomb Mudali’s (another Educated racist) handling of security matters as Minister National Security and Deputy Minister of Defence from 1984 – 1989.

The state and security forces have been in denial about state sponsored terrorism for a long time. Premadasa was only a minor actor in the entire scheme of things. If you look at the security forces you will find personnel who were involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity in 1971 are later found to be commanding troops between 1987 – 1991, then during 30 years of war.

The 3 or 4 commissions (appointed by Chandrika) which investigated (30,000 cases in 1993 or later) Involuntary Removal or Disappearance of Persons between 1987 and 1990, identified many serving killers, of course then Deputy Defence Minister Ratwatte refused permission to charge them.

Gota, Fonseka, Janaka, DIG Premadasa, ……. and many were running death squads between 1987 and and 1991, before and after, a culture origin of which can be traced back to 1971.

I am sorry to bore you with ……………………

    Prof. K.D.

There was one other decision which defied Scientific Evidence, WHO Guidelines and International Practice and which continued for almost one year from March 2020 to February 2021 causing Immense Pain and Suffering to an Entire Community. Repeated Appeals and Pleadings from that Community fell on Deaf Ears. I am referring to the Forced Cremation of Covid-19 victims.

The Decision was changed in late February, last. It is believed that Pakistani PM Imran Khan’s Feb. 23-24 visit and Pending UNHCR Resolution in March 2021 and the need to obtain support of Muslim countries finally led to the Change of decision.

But, though the Decision is changed, the the BASELESS JUSTIFICATION for Cremation remains as Burial can be carried out ONLY in one place in Sri Lanka, and that too, in Far away Ottomawadi in the East, regardless of where the dead bodies are from. Even if one were to agree to the UNPROVEN ILL-LOGIC of Water Pollution, why has No Action been taken, FOUR Months after Burial was allowed, to name other places when so many places have been identified, including Kuppiyawatte in Colombo, and suggested to the Authorities concerned ?

      Continued II

Why do the grieving Family Members from the South, West and other distant areas of the country have to Suffer more in observing the last rites of their Beloved? Does it mean that those behind the Original Decision to Cremate INSIST on causing as much Harm and Suffering as possible to the Muslims? But, it is Not ONLY Muslims who are buried there. So far, till yesterday, the 22nd, 729 bodies have been buried in Ottamawadi, of whom 690 are Muslims, 15 each of Christians and Hindus, 7 Buddhists and 2 Foreigners. May be, another hundred or two more bodies can be accommodated there which could take a week or two. What happens after that? Have those in Authority given any thought to it yet? If not, why not?

The stubbornness of the Rajapaksas is nothing. What is more disturbing is their coldheartedness. For example, they show no concern about the dead marine life caused by X-Press Pearl fire.
    .
X-PRESS PEARL AND DEVASTATED MARINE LIFE
    .
One month has passed since the ship X-Press Pearl caught fire and fish are washing up dead in alarmingly high numbers daily.
According to local and foreign media reports, over 100 dead turtles, a dozen dolphins, three whales including a blue whale and other fish have washed up so far.
Large mammals like dolphins and whales, the “most brainiacs” in the sea, have washed ashore dead. Dolphins and whales are so smart. They can sense the danger, understand situations around them and even communicate with other fish. How did they die?
Even very versatile sea turtles numbering hundreds have washed ashore dead! So sad.
    My estimate is that at least thousands of large fish may have died so far in the deep sea. For example;
When whales die, they start to sink until they rest on the seafloor. Even dead dolphins may sink if their lungs are filled with water. How about small fish? I am even scared to think.
    Cond’……

    • 10
      1

      Continuation…
      .
Eye witnesses say many dead fish and turtles had open mouths. That means, they have struggled for oxygen!!. Too much nitric acid and other chemicals can deplete oxygen dissolved in seawater. Yet, the government keeps quiet about the cause of death. They just have to check the lungs of dead fish in the laboratory and find out the reason.
At least the government should have explored the possibility of increasing dissolved oxygen in seawater in the affected area.
Sri Lankan waters are now a cocktail of toxic chemicals, other pollutants and plastics. These toxic chemical cocktails will definitely be inside our fish affecting their neurological system, reproductive system and immune system. Then there is the question about planktons too.
How many fish were burnt due to high temperature in seawater caused by the fire in the ship? We don’t even know.
Some people are of the view that oceans are so large and also toxic chemicals breakdown when mixed with seawater. I don’t think so, at least not all toxins. Some chemicals take decades to degrade.
The fish corpses are proof that our marine life is dead. It is even highly likely that our future dolphins, whales, turtles and other fish will be born with deformities due to the large amount of chemicals in our sea. So sad!

Many have forgotten or ignored his history. His sole objective of coming into power was to throw away the pending court cases against him, family and other stooges. 6.9 M have given that opportunity to him and the others. He was only the Supplies Officer to the security forces (MIGs) and a Mudalali who had lots of state money to spend on extravagances (say beautifying Colombo). 6.9 M who were frustrated with the Maithree-Ranil combination had no other choice. His stubbornness is the result of his idiocy.

The Rajapaksas are behaving as though they are from Royal Family. But none of them went to University for higher studies. That is why two of them ended in the army and the third in the Police force. Yet they are the richest and most powerful family in Sri Lanka, They built a monument and a museum in memory of their father on state land and at government expense. The original estimate of Rs.33.9 million ballooned to Rs.87.3 million when changes were made to the original plan. Unashamedly, the Rajapaksa family is refusing to pay the balance of Rs.47.9 million. Ordinary citizens who rob the government are sent to prison, but nobody dares touch the Royal family.

What the country needs is real democracy where the rule of law will prevail. Where the rule of law and equality of citizens is guaranteed.

The constitution should be secular no special favours to any religion. There was a time when Europe was ruled by corrupt and dictatorial Bishops!

“But none of them went to University for higher studies.”

I am sorry you are confused,
Mahinda and Namal are qualified lawyers.
Mahinda was awarded 3 honourary doctorates for winning the war.
Namal was in the process of completing his PhD in law however the country needed him therefore he has deferred submitting his PhD thesis.

Rohitha studied his bachelors’ in aeronautical engineering at the University of Southampton, graduating in 2011. Rohitha also gained his Masters’s in Engineering degree in Space Systems Engineering, an M.Phil. degree from the University of Colombo, and undergoing his Ph.D. degree in Mathematical Optimization of Space Debris Mitigation and Strategy Analysis according to https://biographymask.com/rohitha-rajapaksa/

Gota completed his MSc in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.
Gota also obtained postgraduate degree in Information Technology from the University of Colombo in 1992. He was warded a honourary DSc in 2009 for winning the war.

Higher education does not maketh man while Manners and wisdom maketh man.

Prof. Kum is asking us as to why such a nice man is behaving stupid, if not unrealistic. They are two different attributes and not related at all. I observe as follows:
    (1) Renewable Energy: Possibly Prof Kum has not heard the saying “If you want to hit spire, aim at the stars”.
    (2) Everyone knows that Army Silva knows nothing of the subject but a useful tool to get things done in a crisis. Some sort of egoistic position must be given for work to be extracted out of the guy, though the legal authority is elsewhere.
    (3) The opinion regarding fertilizers: I think all are wrong. What matters here is the lack of supervision of the quality of any imported item and Sri Lanka has become the junk yard of rejects, including low quality chemical and organic fertilizer. The logistics of a changeover must be carefully worked out instead of reverting back.
    (4) Foreign Policy: We have failed to negotiate effectively and bargain making use of the advantageous position in the Indian Ocean. If we show our mettle all these rumblings are in the shade.
Kleptocracy is the biggest bug bear. Does Kum expect remedies for that?

He is stubborn, because there were Easter bombings by mysterious parties that paved his way for ascension as President. He is stubborn because the wheeler dealer Ranil, saved the rajapaksa family from getting jailed for swindling money & killing the innocent. He is stubborn because Many Buddhist monks & the Cardinal shamelessly canvassed for his victory. He is stubborn because people of this country are stupid & senseless when choosing their leaders & governments.

    Just checking on this:
    .
Partly because there was a reference to the comment by “NV Jen” in the column of “Latest Comments”.
    .
Also to make sure that I had made one comment at least on this article, which I remembered as having read.
    .
We owe a great deal to Professor Kumar David.
    .
Recently, there was an idiot school-mate of mine who asked me whether I get paid by CT for spending so much time here. The fellow, who has globe-trotted a lot, was wanting me to write his “memoirs”! A guy who now knows that he has achieved nothing, really, in life. I’ve been asking him to visit our old schools (three of them for us, only one for Kumar) on OBA AGM days. He won’t. He’s just full of himself!
    .
Kumar won’t visit, either, because as a Marxist, he doesn’t attach any importance to the “alma mater.” He doesn’t need to boost his ego with such seemingly inane activities. I go because I’ve been a GambadaIngirisiIskoleMahaththaya, and particularly because one of the schools is within sight of me.
    .
But the Anglican-priest Headmaster of this school has instructed the Security fellows not to let me into the school. Why? Because he’s cheating, and (although an Old Boy) there is no sign of his having paid up and become “a Life-Member”, which now costs Rs 2.5K!
    .
It shows what a range of values people have!
