Why You Should Vote For Anura – 10 Facts

By Uvindu Kurukulasuriya

Uvindu Kurukulasuriya

Thirty years ago when I was a university student, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and I were on opposite sides politically. There have been many occasions since then when I have not been in agreement with positions he has taken. Today, I stand with him.

It’s become almost cliché to say we’re living in turbulent times. What’s less obvious is what this turbulence stems from. We need to ask why, despite so much upheaval, those in power refuse to let it reshape the world.

What’s new in examining our time is the profound confusion and uncertainty about the forces at play, both globally, regionally, and locally. On one side, we have the defenders of the status quo, and on the other, the agents of change and transformation. From the micro levels to the macro and to the planetary scale, this uncertainty about where the world is heading affects both the dominant structures and those challenging them. To begin understanding what’s happening, we must try to unravel these uncertainties. There’s no longer a clear framework to explain reality or guide action. The old grand ideological theories have become obsolete, leaving us without a solid method for formulating new approaches. Those invested in preserving the status quo simply cling to authority, and resist change. Nevertheless, forces advocating social transformation not only recognize the need to break free from these constraints but are actively engaged in challenging the overbearing, corrupt and oppressive structures. The ongoing clash between those protecting the old order and those pushing for progress is precisely what is happening and this is why the National People’s Power (NPP), led by Anura, has seen such rapid growth.

For the past 15 years, Anura and the NPP leadership have been deeply engaged in addressing critical questions and developing fresh perspectives. However, as we evaluate the present circumstances, there’s an undeniable decline in theoretical frameworks. No clear guidance or genuine attempts to resolve issues exist. This erosion of confidence has led to widespread mistrust, confusion, and a pervasive sense of despair.

We’re currently witnessing a pivotal moment in history, driven by significant structural shifts. Ranil Wickremesinghe, often dubbed the “Ping President,” claims to be an economic savior with unmatched global connections. However, it’s crucial to remember that he was handpicked by the Rajapaksa family, who fled during the uprising to protect themselves. [Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa, another presidential candidate, made statements with YouTuber Eraj Weeraratne a year and a half ago, remarks that many seem to have conveniently forgotten.]

Over the past 16 years, in numerous private discussions with Anura, the recurring themes of instability and uncertainty have surfaced time and again. From these conversations, I can attest to his quality as a listener and his unwavering dedication to reshaping the outdated ideologies that once dominated his party. Since assuming leadership, Anura and his team have proposed significant social reforms in Sri Lanka, and now, the pressing task is to turn those reforms into lasting reality.

Here are 10 key reasons to vote for Anura:

* Anura avoids presenting an unrealistic vision of an idealized state.

* Anura doesn’t believe that a classless society is tenable.

* Anura accepts that civil society will always face conflicts, struggles, coercions, and wars.

* Anura knows people can be influenced by corruption and the consumer economy, and he is not overly idealistic.

* Anura understands that we are moving towards an open society where transparency is key and believes in combining openness with privacy laws.

* Anura continuously studies the problems faced by different social segments in society.

* Anura recognizes the importance of a contingency approach to political and societal situations.

* Anura understands the need to create minimum conditions for all people to live decently and knows that while problems like exploitation can’t be eradicated, they can be controlled.

* Anura is aware of the threats and weaknesses faced by women, other genders, the disabled, the elderly, and children in society as well as their strengths and how to provide them an opportunity.

* Anura, as I’ve observed over the last 16 years, is always willing to learn from others and listen to anyone, making him a humble and approachable leader.

Rather than boasting about personal achievements or claiming to have fulfilled promises, Anura has built a strong network of experts from various fields, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, who remain loyal to him. This network is a true reflection of his success. I genuinely believe Anura is one of the most humble leaders Sri Lanka has seen, and that he will never allow power to cloud his judgment or change his character.

Have no fear, vote for Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 21, 2024, with absolute certainty!

Their ancestral livelihoods thus assured and kept
In the face of the global upheavals, so dreadfully felt
With their small houses and gardens so prettily kept
And with their great desire to keep him forever

    So thus comforted
    He rolled on his back
Purred like an engine and never looked back
Then he sat on the chest of the man of the soil

Uvindu: Another compelling reason to vote for AKD
      .

A compelling reason to vote for AKD is that EXPECTATIONS raised by him to combat corruption and bring about accountability with all round good governance are so high that in the event he FAILS TO DELIVER at least HALF the expectations, the 2022 ‘Aragalaya’ which resulted in the political demise of Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be a walk in the park since his probable election will most likely be the LAST THROW of the dice by the ANGRY electors. Therefore he will be COMPELLED to deliver. This is apart from the very short honeymoon period he will be given.
      .

I hope AKD realizes that a MAJOR component of good governance must be a truly INDEPENDENT ‘Constitutional Council’ which must also bring the MEDIA under its ambit without infringing on media independence. AKD would have observed the utter PARTIALITY/ABUSE of sections of the mainstream media in the run-up to the Presidential Election. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
      .

I also hope that AKD will HONESTLY bring JUSTICE to the MINORITIES.
      .

    ‘Twas the night before elections

    ‘Twas the night before elections
    When all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring
    Not even a mouse

Ginger the cat, pranced through the house
    And sniffed out each candidate
    And meowed out loud
He wanted to know, which of which candidate
    Would eat him for supper
He considered it, and gave out a shudder

    He sniffed out the first
    With the Westernized scent
    And gave out a yowl
    And scattered out fast

    He saw in his vision
    His beloved trees
    Being torn down for buildings
    The Indians to appease
Hungry and thirsty, he would still not be forgotten
And sold to China for a good many dollars

He went to the next room
    And sniffed out the second
Who had the name of Sri Lanka, drawn on his collar
He purred for a while, and licked his big paws
    The decided move on
For he was not sure how

      Cont.

He went to the third room
      And sniffed on the third
Who had the sweet smell of Lanka
On the sweat of his brows

Visions of happiness ran through his head
For he saw the many houses, where he would be fed
Trees he could climb and forests galore,
      And people with happiness
      In their beloved Lanka

Their ancestral livelihoods thus assured and kept
In the face of the global upheavals, so dreadfully felt
With their small houses and gardens so prettily tended

There are many commentators raised that it is obvious that Barrack Obama, and Cameron are elected as leaders without previous experience and there is no need to tell us now. I am sure most of the comments came against Anura of NPP pointing out experience compared to Ranil. This is not only in this forum but also in supporting the candidates in Sri Lanka to cheat voters in this election and many voters believe that. So, now many accept that Experience of an individual is a not a pre request for a president of a Sri Lanka.
I would like to highlight to some facts about the past Presidents and what they did when they become Presidents of Sri Lanka.
UNP came in to power after winning a parliamentary election in 1977 with 140 seats in Parliament. They brought a new constitution in 1978 and in 1977 they brought Prevention of Terrorism Act. In 1981 Jaffna library was burnt and in 1982 had a Presidential election and UNP won this election. In 1983 July 1983 Riots killed thousands of innocent people and burnt thousands of businesses were destroyed.
Are we proud of JRJ now?
Another Good example is Mahinda Rajapaksa. He became President in 2005. There was a peace talk between LTTE and UNP government from 2002 and 2006. There was no progress in the talks.

I regret the editorial leadership of Colombo Telegraph coming out openly and bluntly asking people to vote for AKD. By such blatant propaganda you compromise the political independence dignity and good name of a respected and trusted website. True to its credit CT has always generously carried all points of view mine included, and we are grateful for this. However one wishes the CT editorial board itself had refrained from showing its hand by indulging in crude political propaganda.

Prof. ANIE. I fully agree with you. I am not a fan of the others either. CT and UK Shame on you to sink down to the bottom. All of them are made of the same chemistry. Only miracles can save SL.

      Dear Professor ANI Ekanayaka,
I am hesitant to contradict – challenge – you. Nevertheless, I have made up my mind to spill – spell – it out.
In fact, I formulated the same thought, in the form of a comment, the day – 18th – I saw the article. Then, on a second thought, I deleted that.
      Reason:
Uvindu Kurukulasuriya has presented his thinking, as an individual.
As a dutiful citizen, he has shared with us his view on NPP and on Anura. His association with CT, should not deprive him of his right to independence.

      Prof ANIE
“I regret the editorial leadership of Colombo Telegraph coming out openly and bluntly”.
Shouldn’t we put this in perspective? CT backed the opposition to Mahinda Rajapaksa since it’s inception, and got banned twice for its trouble. It opposed Gota too. Nobody complained. Now CT plays a different tune, to which it is fully entitled. One doesn’t have to vote JVP if one doesn’t want to.

        .

According to JVP Tompachcayas, BIA and Mattala will face capacity problems in their services.
            .
Fools like SM do not seem to guess the above calculations. Like the supporters of Gotha in November 2019, these liars and their supporters are brainwashed as nothing can help them.

I left Sri Lanka through BIA today after 8 days . there was no crowds . I ve seen a few FB posts with 3 or 4 sahodarayas posing. what plane loads……….

but I must say that the country was very peaceful, unlike other elections. only posters were on abandoned buildings,

Either way I’m am not sure what will indeed happen.

            Thank you dear a14455.
I don’t think JVP will take power. If people are going to swallow the pill, it’s up to them to sink deeper. I have no sympathy. They will cut their neck by their own.
I am very worried whenever even thinking about the power being grabed by 89-facists. Tomorrow, we will know the outcome.
            .
Today, almost everywhere we can’t believe how they kept the peace. It is all because of RW and Tiran. They restored normalcy in a country peoples were caught by anarchy.

      ANI! ANI! ANI !…
      Uvindu has answered OTTO
      “One day
      the apolitical intellectuals
      of our land
      will be interrogated
      by the poorest of people.
They will be asked what they did
      while their community
      was extinguished,
like a sweet fire, small and alone.

No one will ask them about their fashion sense,
or their long lunches at the faculty club.
No one will want to know about their absurd
attempts to discover “the meaning of it all.”
No one will care about or even understand
      their economic outlook for
      “the current recession.”
They will not be questioned on
      Greek mythology,
nor their new age remedy for
      feelings of alienation.

They’ll be asked nothing about their
post-modernist justifications for apathy, concocted as self-serving lies.

On that day the simple folk will come.
Those who had no place in the
      papers, books and poems of
      the apolitical intellectuals,
      but who produced their
      food and clothes, built
      their homes and cars,
      who cleaned their
offices, raised their children, and cooked
      their meals,
      and they’ll ask:

“What did you do when the poor

      suffered, when tenderness and

      life burned out in them?”

      Apolitical intellectuals,

you will not be able answer.

      A vulture of silence

will eat at your guts. Your own misery

      will pick at your soul.

      And you will be mute

      in your shame.”

    PART ONE
    .
I’m in Bandarawela, and making this comment here:
    .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O3msqsQuV0
    .
President Ranil Wickremesinghe on ties with India, China & more
    .

at 00:45 on 21/09/2024. I’ve been adopting this policy of being very precise in identifying time and place to counter what I see as manipulating our people right on election day.
    .
Many things are strange! I call upon others to point out to me anything that they find questionable about what I say.
    .
Note that it is just after midnight on the 21st. Having propaganda meetings/rallies/etc after midnight on the 18th was totally prohibited by the Election Commission to allow us, the voters, time to think out what we wanted to do with our ballot papers. No propaganda on the 19th, 20th, 21st.
    .
This is the Law of the Land. No election propaganda on election day, and two days preceding.

    • 0
      5

      PART TWO
      .
We will have the results of the elections trickling in on the 21st night (voting ceases at 4.00 pm) and the final result will be with us on the 22nd.
      .
I don’t expect a close result; there will be no SECOND COUNT. As Ranil says here, few mark Preferences; I do, and let me tell you how they will go!

      .
My Preferences, this is how they will go! No Xs (kathires) used; that would immediately invalidate my ballot since I’m voting for more than one candidate.
      .
My choices: 1. Anura Kumara Dissanayake 2. Sarath Fonseka, because he’s reasonably honest 3. Panini Wijesiriwardena, because he has the same first name as me.

Strange that India has sent both Palki Sharma and Vandana Mennon to interview Ranil.

Many have told me: “Because he’s the current President”. And how did he become that?

LM, SM, all I hope for is that there will be no violence after the election. If the NPP win democratically, so be it. Vox populi vox dei and all that.

              Paul,
              thank you.
I heard that some facists who disappeared after the 89-92 rebellion are returning to their villages today. So those JVP murderers will take revenge on their political rivals in the coming days. I am speechless today. This is what I heard from some relatives from Galle today.

    gamaya,

“It was leased for 99 years” ……. True.

99 years is a long time …… for all the living citizens now …… it’s as good as sold.

“the money was used to pay the maturing International Sovereign Bonds unrelated to the port.”

So Ranil still has the loan of billion or so borrowed by Mahinda, well above the going market rate of interest at the time? ……. And we still have to pay interest on it? …….. Let alone the principal ………

“pay the maturing International Sovereign Bonds”

I thought bonds were paid off by issuing more new bonds. ……. The sale of Hambantthota Harbour netted only a billion or so ……. where did all the other money come from to settle maturing bonds?

The Hambanthotta Harbour is a public asset ……. is there a published document with the breakdown of all the details that the public can access? ……… Or is it a underhand/secret deal like Ranil’s Adani deal?

      cont

After all these belong to the citizens …….. or does Ranil believe that he is far above in intelligence than the citizens ……… there’s no need for the citizens to know?

The state of the country …… and the amounts borrowed left right and centre ……. and his own ludicrous position, he is now in, surrounded by all the crooks ……… doesn’t indicate he is very smart: in spite of what he might think.

In spite of all the training by ol’ Uncle Junious, for his luck, Ranil can’t be cleverer than himself: the man doesn’t see his own glass-ceiling.

He would’ve done far better if he had stuck to his modest capabilities; honestly.

You know what I’m saying is true! :)))

“It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.” —- Charlie Munger

Not really. Bankruptcy leads to debt restructuring. Haircuts, discounts, etc. So, being bankrupt is a blessing in disguise.
      And it’s 300 million, not a billion.

        OC and other true souls,

They should introduce a tax system similar to that used in Germany and many developed countries to strengthen state revenue sources. I am opposed to reducing their PAYE tax (Pay As You Earn)from 36% to 24%. Every citizen should be entitled to contribute to state revenue. Then only the government can fulfill the expectations of the people.
        .
The more you earn, the more you pay in taxes – should be the motto. Tuition sellers, Youtubers and other business people who siphon every last cent must pay their proportional share of taxes. Bigger taxes can accommodate long-overdue pay raises for teachers and police.

    Lest I be misunderstood:
Why You Should Not Vote For Anura.
    * We see just the face of Anura. The body?
    * JVP will hold sway, when it comes to the crunch.
    * Minorities have been left stranded. Anura is quiet about it.
    * Anura belongs to an outfit that some of our best brains suspect.
    The list goes on.

Even after the continuous lies of the Central Bank and Evil Emperor’s, the entire month the Rupee has been falling freely and has lost about Rs 10 for a dollar, without any additional resources remaining with Evil’s Aanduwa to defend it. For the last three years, without there was any real improvement in the economy, Evil was watering the financial resources, borrowing about $20B additional loans, tightening the stomach of the mouthless souls whom the last 30%, and banning the imports which might have encouraged countries to import using the Rupee’s weakness, only to make fake financial deal to make his dream come true, that is becoming as a life time president before life ends, following the Don Stephen’s path, that is buying the Tamils with a cup of coffee. At the last 11th hour, Evil Struck a deal on half-baked FDR on selected loans. He made it so complicated that when they announce it on the day before the election, no analyst will be able to explain it to the voters. But Vasanth Muthali and FSP have filed an action against that deal. So, if it is truly worthless, it cannot bind the new government. Now the Rupee could not defend itself or the Central Bank could not artificially boost it up, so the Rupee and the Evil are meeting their fate at the same time i.e., on September 21, 2024.have become stale.

Even after such a nightmare bankruptcy, the country’s leader was trying to win the election by crushing further the suffering ones, with his fake deals. Even uneducated Siri Ma O was trying to take care of the people during the 1970s Oil Crisis, but this one was looking for deals to stabilize his seat. The country which spends most of its budget on defense does not protect the people, so the country is overwhelmed by crimes; yet people have nobody to seek help. A minister used Kuyukthi methods to arrest the children, wives, relatives & friends of the drug addicts, who were already abused & spoiled by the Police, Army and political drug dealers. Media reported from 35,000 to 100,000 were arbitrarily arrested and kept in the overflowing prisons only to prove the IMF that they are implementing the Governance Audit. The Defense team’s and political leadership’s drug dealers are walking to rivals in the midday light with AK-47 rifles and playing duals.

They say in Tamil, “Venthe Punnilai Veal Paachurathu” (Digging the burned wound with a spear to make further suffer the victims”. Then they were parading their Toilet Commodes to panic strike the Sinhala Buddhists Modaya, saying “if we miss you, you will meet each other again on the Gas line!” Do you remember in the 2019 election, the UNP-SLFP Union got together and bombed three Tamil Churches and many Foreign Tourist Hotels to hold the voters on the edge of the sword to make them vote for the UNP-SLFP Union? This man, like he did with 19A, was only negotiating deals with the IMF to install him, as the lifetime Executive of the country. He will never say bye, bye for this greed, but hopefully this election will say bye for him and his greed! For the Toilet Commode Symbol carriers, Chinese may fill with it in the future. But at this time, the belt-tightened Ceylonese voters have nothing for the Commode carriers to defecate in. They will be taught the reality.

Change can lead to growth and breakthroughs.Change is essential for progress, as seen in how America constantly evolves with new leadership every few years. While some prefer the familiar, innovation and fresh ideas—like going to the moon—come from embracing the new. Young people bring energy and solutions, driving society forward. The idea that “the old devil is better than the new devil” reflects a common belief that sticking with the familiar is safer, even if it’s flawed. However, as you pointed out, embracing new ideas, technologies, and leadership can propel societies forward. In the U.S., the system of regularly changing leaders every four or eight years through elections has allowed for fresh perspectives, new policies, and advancements like space exploration.

    Jayaweva!

Out from the centuries of mass Lankan suffering
Out from the dark Colonial and Post-Colonial past
Has emerged from the lost souls of crying Lankan Devas
A Victory to fulfill Lanka at last!

We thank the gods of our ancestors
That they listened to our silent pleas
And we thank the kindly Buddha
For securing us through our needs.

    Jayaweva, Anura!
Jayaweva to the present and past
    Jayaweva to the future
Our Motherland will succeed at last!

“Our Motherland will succeed at last!”

Isn’t it too early to say this? Sri Lanka is torn in many ways. The situation is similar to the fate of a terminally ill patient.

Essential food and medicine are at risk if the next tranche of the IMF is not blessed. If the electricity problem is not managed properly, tourism will be left behind again. If he cannot eat curd with a barber’s knife, he has no allies to support him.
      .
Besides, AKD doesn’t have a magic wand, if he doesn’t get his act together, nothing will help so to speak.
Let s hope the best !

        Ramona,
Won’t new laws be brought to control youtubers in the country soon? Overall, they will have to restructure the Srilankan mainstream media which is the biggest mafia going beyond the levels of drug trafficking. This would be the first step, wouldn’t it?
        .
When will they close the BIA for the criminals who are leaving the country from today (Mafia boss Mahendra Rajapakse, Johnston, Wimal Weerawansa and all other big criminals)?
When will they bring AM to this country regarding so called BOND SCAM ?
When will they bring justice to the victims of the Easter Sunday disaster?
When would they skin Basil Rajapkshe for his Gampaha land robbery ?

When will the Rajapaksas be hanged street corners for the many crimes they have committed in recent years?
When will they bring justice to the victimized Thadjudeen family? When will the investors flow to develop the country?
When will new laws be introduced to crack down on underworld drug dealers and Thugs?
When would they discuss with Dubai which is now the main hideout for all OUR high criminals?

I believe all this will happen in the first few weeks as they have repeatedly promised about them being efficient than any thinkable politicians…isn’t it?
When will they bring more dollars?
Elon Musk and many others will start their investments soon, right?

Let s wait with patience !
