“Rajapaksa told Ranil, ‘You should have been the candidate. You would have got more votes.’ He said Ranil was very reasonable, a professional politician, but a UNP – JVP alliance was unsustainable,” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.

Ranil arrives Cinnamon Grand hotel to see Fonseka- ‘I don’t know anything about that. That’s all Fonseka and the JVP’
The Colombo Telegraph found the relevant leaked cable from the WikiLeak database. The cable recounts details of a meeting the US Embassy has had with Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on February 2, 2010. The cable classified as “CONFIDENTIAL” by the ambassador Patricia A. Butenis.
“Rajapaksa mentioned several conversations with UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. He had told Wickremesinghe that no one had anything to fear from the government, but that Fonseka was plotting violence. He said Ranil replied, ‘I don’t know anything about that. That’s all Fonseka and the JVP.’ Rajapaksa told Ranil, ‘You should have been the candidate. You would have got more votes’” the Ambassador wrote.
“He said Ranil was very reasonable, a professional politician, but a UNP – JVP alliance was unsustainable. The parties were diametrically opposed ideologically, and there was too much bad blood between those who remember the JVP insurrection against the UNP government of late 1980s. But Rajapaksa cautioned the JVP was very dangerous. He said the JVP had played hell in the villages during the presidential campaign,” the Ambassador Butenis further wrote.
Below we give a part of the confidential cable.

“bised verdict” what a fool are you??? if it is biased verdict you know what to do? Stop blaming others and take serious look at the charges against SF. People awake and not sleeping except those who want to turn the country into military junta.

Henry you are an idiot why then the other judge said he is not guitlly. Why the main Judge didn’t allow him to say his protest.
They should punnished the person who published that lie in the News paper. and no one couldn’t porve that General said that. This is a biased decision. any one can understand it. Since you are a idiot and a fool this story is different.

What are you talking? NO PROOF? Haven’t you heard what he said from his own mouth during a rally in Rathnapura which was aired on adaderana and swarnavahini news? It’s on youtube too. The video had been shown to the judges.

Whole world knows this story in the final stage of war. and very same time aired by foreign medias and some of local medias too. What ever told by General in Rathnapura rally is not a hot news for the world, but it is hot for only believers of SL government tv’s, SLBC and lake house news papers.
Check the world news site on final stage dates and realized the truth.

Very lucky for MR. The decision for not contesting RW was a big mistake. If RW contested he could obtain all UNP votes while JVP and SLFP votes divided between MR and SF. First time it was LTTE, 2nd time it was JVP, bad luck RW.

Lal Kumara / November 19, 2011
Despite all the efforts taken by the govt, they do not have any solid proof to victimize Mr. Fonseka. These reasons prove that Mr. Fonseka is far better than the political thieves, working against him. The nature will look after those people for their sins.

AS LONG AS THE RAJAPAKSE CLAN IS IN POWER, FONSEKA WILL BE BEHIND BARS. WHY? ACTUALLY FONSEKA IS THE PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA WINNING BY 53%. SO IF HE IS FREE THE RAJAS FAMILY WILL BE OUT. THAT IS THE CLEAR AND CUT STORY.
/
Henry / November 19, 2011
Fonseka is where he belongs at least for the next few years. If you are truly sympathetic for his case, as I do, ask him to first keep his damed mouth shut. That is a good start for a few months. Second, ask him to stay away JVP/UNP/SLFP or any other political party because he is a stupid politician like most in the country. We all respected him as a military man and he is good at that. He was totally off the track and became a wild ass when he ran for the presidency. I am sorry. He was totally mislead by crazy idiots like those who are accusing the judges on this page, and stop doing that if you really like him.

Yo henry wots up yo?? Did you just wake up from a 32 years of a long sleep?? You are the stupid idiot commenter I had ever seen makes nothing but stupid ridicules comments.
/
ruwanferdinandez / November 19, 2011
That’s the line people like you and Lal Kumara above, make to satisfy yourselves. How did you count 53%?Was it 40% he was polled +13% commissions his son-in-law gave him for contracts? But where were his fans when he was sentenced? Only about 20 people caused a mayhemA few have left comments on websites as well. but is that it? Listen pal, this is sad, he was a soldier, he did a great service to the country. We should leave it at that. he is not the smartest around to revive our economy. All his adult life he was shooting around holding a gun, for 40 years more or less. He has no economic, finance or political background. When the economies are in trouble, Italy, Greece, they all look for educated, technocrats, not a retired Army commander. We have plenty of kasippu mudalalis to do politics of his style. My suggestion is,he should not suffer this way, he should gracefully retire. He should retire and enjoy his retirement reminescing that glitterring career. What the JVP did by dragging him into politics and to rescue themselves from bankruptsy was criminal. The UNP’s opportunism to use him to face the public after the end of the war, which was disastrous for them (remember Kilinochchi-Medawachchi stories?),was heinous as well. In fact he himself left the JVP by forming a new three-wheeler party. UNP obviously kicked him in the butt.
Rather thbutterring him up, people who care about him seriously should help him come out of this hell. You can say things but for another five year MR is the president and it doesn’t look good for him.His wife has been tricked into stupid politics almost by the JVP too. This family deserves a break, his politics is not very important to the country, they should speak to the president and get out of this hell.If you can suggest a better deal, I will support too but I can’t see any other way out. You need to be pragmatic! You can say what you say and curse the government but this man is sufferring and the stress in the jail will at some point break him up.

Kent / November 19, 2011
He came to politics to save the country for the second time. If he just wanted power he would have done an easy coup to take control of the president but he didn’t because he is simply a gentleman not only a war hero.
War heroes don’t ask for mercy. For a person who walked out holding his bowels to stop hanging from stomach being prisoned for 3 years is noting. What we should shame is not talking anything against this regime that is behind all this. This is pathetic. Shame all you Sri Lankans who lives freely because of him.
/
Henry / November 19, 2011
I agree fully. I constantly pray in my heart for the Buddha that this guy will come to his senses, or someone else with some sanity, not those lunatics who have no sense of pragmatism and continue pore oil into fire, will come forward and talk to president on his behalf and ask to grant this guy pardon. His wife is certainly like him, totally crazy and blind by some stupid JVP political ideology. I was one of the first few people to tell Fonseka to stay away from politics when he was toying around with the idea to run for presidency. I knew politics was not his forte, and certainly at that time of history in our country, and he would end up in this predicament. Sadly I was right.

How is the fate of a General who has retired after 40 years fighting,30 of them against the ruthless terrorists written in that book ofyours? Is it like this? He retires after 40 years with some body parts missing following a suicide bomb attempt, then he is seen as a big fish by some bankrupt political units who fish him into their tepid pot,use him and chuck him out. Then he utters some stupid words and ends up in jail, enjoying his retirement? Isn’t that pathetic? Cursing the rulers will now not help this guy. He needs to associate with intelligent folks, not jilmart pappas and sexually confused people. Some clever guy has to tell him not to suffer, none of his fans stop eating for him, just find a way out of this jail hell.
/
Kent / November 19, 2011
People will rise one day against this. This regime is not for long now. This is a politically motivated verdict. All the people were behind plotting this will all be punished one day. He is being prisoned means we all prisoners.

how many readers accept the presidencial election results. I think non of you, since all knew what happend and keep quite for their own reasons.
By 1300 hours of election day governemnt inteligent informed SF is leading the votes and after 1300 hours 13% votes polled to MR but not a single percent to SF. Is it practical.
Sit with your conscince and live with the truth.
Still goverment knows SF is real president and that is the reason to keep him inside till he die.
