WikiLeaks:If Rajapaksa wins, he may destroy everything I tried – CBK

By Colombo Telegraph –

“My only regret is that if my party’s Presidential candidate wins, he may destroy everything I have tried to do in the last 11 years.” Chandrika Kumaratunga said to the diplomatic corps.

The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from the WikiLeak database. The cable is classified as “CONFIDENTIAL”  recounts details of the dinner which was hosted by Outgoing Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for the diplomatic corps on November 16, the evening before the 2005 presidential election. The cable was written on November 17, 2005 by the US Ambassador to Colombo Jeffrey J. Lunstead.

She does not know where she will live. She said ‘Perhaps I will just live in the street.’

The Ambassador wrote “ Outgoing Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (CBK) hosted a dinner for the diplomatic corps on November 16, the evening before the election which would determine her successor. About 100 guests–the entire diplomatic corps, including multilateral and UN agency heads, plus various Sri Lankans who have been close to her, such as Peace Secretariat Head Jayantha Dhanapala and Special Adviser Mano Tittewella–attended. Showing that she was not going to change her style simply because her Presidential tenure was ending, CBK showed up for her 8 o’clock party at 9:25.”

“As guests took their places for dinner sometime around 10:30, Ambassador was seated directly at CBK’s left hand, UK High Commissioner at her right, and Norwegian Ambassador directly across at the head table. CBK commented: ‘Well, wouldn’t the bearded fellows (i.e., the JVP) have a fit if they saw this.’ Throughout the dinner, Kumaratunga opined on various subjects: –‘My only regret is that if my party’s Presidential candidate (Mahinda Rajapakse) wins, he may destroy everything I have tried to do in the last 11 years.’ he further wrote.

Ambassador Lunstead wrote “Kumaratunga said she had heard the theory about a month ago that the LTTE wanted Rajapakse to win, calculating that Rajapakse’s own beliefs, coupled with the ideas of his Sinhala chauvinist allies the JVP and JHU, would show the world that the Tamil demand for independence was justified. Now, following the LTTE call for Tamils not to vote, she began to wonder if that theory was correct. She also thought the LTTE might use paid Sinhalese agents to cause problems after Rajapakse won–burning churches, attacking Tamils etc.–to further bolster their cause. This could lead to ‘UDI’ — a unilateral declaration of independence. –She confirmed press reports that one of Rajapakse’s brothers, a former Sri Lankan Army officer now resident in the US, had planned to fly up to Jaffna along with 300 Army deserters labeled as ‘election observers.’ She had personally ordered this movement blocked.”

“She had reached agreement with UNP Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremasinghe that if he won, she could stay as President through November 23, when the armed forces were planning a send-off ceremony. (Under the Sri Lankan constitution, the winning candidate can be sworn in any time after the election, and must do so within 14 days.) She hoped that Rajapakse would grant her the same courtesy. She did not have any firm plans yet for her post-Presidency life. ‘I want to just relax for the first year.’ Ranil had offered her whatever position she wanted afterward, and wanted the two parties to cooperate in governing. Her reply: ‘I’ve been offering that to you for the last 10 years. It’s too bad you didn’t take it up.’ She does not know where she will live. The security forces have told her that her personal house is not secure, as it is overlooked by a number of other buildings. The government is readying a house for her, but it will not be finished for a while. ‘Perhaps I will just live in the street.’ Lunstead  further wrote.

Placing a comment he wrote “I had expected a more emotional, perhaps even lachrymose Chandrika at this moment. Instead, she was subdued and a bit reflective, and certainly making no attempt to hide her opinions. She made no effort to hide her disdain for her own party’s candidate. She no doubt hopes that a Ranil Wickremasinghe victory will allow her some continuing role in Sri Lankan public life.”

Rajapakse's own beliefs, coupled with the ideas of his
Sinhala chauvinist allies the JVP and JHU, would show the
world that the Tamil demand for independence was justified.
Now, following the LTTE call for Tamils not to vote, she
began to wonder if that theory was correct. She also thought
the LTTE might use paid Sinhalese agents to cause problems

"UDI" -- a unilateral declaration of independence.

--She confirmed press reports that one of Rajapakse's

even lachrymose Chandrika at this moment. Instead, she was
subdued and a bit reflective, and certainly making no attempt
to hide her opinions. She made no effort to hide her disdain
for her own party's candidate. She no doubt hopes that a
Ranil Wickremasinghe victory will allow her some continuing
role in Sri Lankan public life. End Comment.

History has shown that Chandrika was correct in her assessment of her party’s Presidential candidate, but at the same time, Praba had underestimated the capability of MR as a ruthless leader when it comes to suppressing his enemies, at that time only one enemy, LTTE. When one reflects on what happened in the last 6 years, it appears that everything has happened as if it had already been written somewhere in the country’s destined history. Everything which Praba did from 2005 onward went wrong; his several attempts at getting at MR were all futile; he made two determined and powerful enemies in Gota and SF through his abortive assassination attempts at them; his plan to blow up Colombo harbour did not work due to the hostile work of weather gods; his military machinery equipped with chemical weapons could not do much damage to SL army due to the timely action taken by Gota and SF, according to some unconfirmed reports, to neutralise them are only a few of Praba’s failures.
It is the future generations which will have to assess the rest of the history from 2005 onwards!

Yes, the history of this country is written. I first hear of MR’s coming as a savior in ’90s from a meditating yogi lived in Siripada. I didn’t believe this would happen until MR made it possible. This also reflects the fact that MR is a different bread from Ranil/Chandrika. Ranil and Chandrika belong to a bread that betrayed the country in many occasions. Both have been following the same strategy just like their ancestors to corner their rival bread regardless of the country. Chandrika couldn’t do the worst to the country thanks to timely intervention of courts to oust her. Ranil is still doing the harm he started in 2002, first to the country now to the party.

Chandrica dig her own well by not supporting Mahinda and instead going after UNP to get a place which would never have happened judging from the treatment she got from the UNP Cabinet- 2001-2004.LTTE and JVP proved to the world that suppress of the will of a Nation is not healthy for their survival.
In 1987,JVP,without supporting SLFP-Mrs.Bandaranayaka,didn’t allow majority of voters to cast their legitimate votes allowing Govt.Party of R.Premadasa(UNP) to fill the Ballot Boxes with the help of Armed Personal & becoming the President. Othewise Premadasa would never become a President in this Country. It is history now what has happened to the JVP in 1989-2000.In the same way,If LTTE allowed the Tamil Voters to cast their Ballots as they wish,Still Praba is ruling North & East thanks to Ranil who was going after Western Countries to stop the War in Sri-Lanka.

All the credit must go to Praba , LTTE & Powerful,Rich Tamil Diaspora for not allowing Tamils to vote and my sincere thanks to all of them for allowing Mr.Mahida.Rajapaksa to become the President & wipe out Terrorism from our Beloved Country.

      Mahil.Liyanage-Matara.

Percy Mahendran & Co wants; hype and stay in power. We are stuck with them for the next 40 years

If CBK accepted SF’s 4 year plan instead of Daluwatte’s 8 year plan, today she would yet be prez, she tried but we lost the fight; 3 yrs of hard work in weeks.

Yet, thanks to her and Kadirigamar, 911, Karuna, Ranil (cunning or ponna), SF (refusal to obey Ranil’s Jaffna demilitarising) and Velu’s errors, post 2005 became an inevitable; success reaped by Paksas, instigators of that success JVP were impatient an did not know how to reap the rewards !

CBK was not that dumb as I thought and whoever say that Ranil W enjoying opp leader perks and destroying the party, here is the answer. Velupillai didnt die two years ago, He signed His Death Warrant the moment he wanted Rajapakse to win and thats when he died – he deserved it well.

Feel very sad that CBK made this comments to all diplomats. That is her capacity. What did she do to the country & what is left to destroy? Ranil got better knowledge about politics and economy. But he is not a good leader. What’s happened to his party now? He is not a good team leader. He cannot run a country with his own ideas (Dreams). With Regards to Mahinda and his policies he has done a much better job than others. Unfortunately he is lost track and he believes that he and his family owns the country. If not for corruption he would have been one of the best leaders. I do not blame him trusting and using his family to get the things done. Who can be trusted in a country like SL. He need people that he trust to do the job, but not the way that they are doing it right now!!!!!

As far as i am concern all politicians are greedy for money and power. Their hands are not clean they also give broken promises very few were fulfilled. So dont blame one and other,
Mahinda mama did something and has been doing at the same same robbing too. This is open
secret. So what is next lets us all look for the best.

Mrs.Chandirake B. Kumarantunge, M/S Sunithria Banadarake and Master Anura Banadarake are lost childern of Late SWRD and Mrs B.family.She rule and ruin our island 11 odd years.Since 1994 until 2005 she messup every & each admaminitraive moves during her family-orinted regime. The 1956 SWRD won victory, after he was assinigation by anti-national forces and foreign power politics ;SLFP become family bandism and nepotism orinted politics in Sri Lanka after death of SWRD>.
1994 CBK being to power, she never change 1977 neoliberial polcies pratice by UNP.CBK had similar and Identital mindset of UNP,& she was surroung by old UNPS,in her cabniet.
There were so many unaddress ploblems had been cerated by UNP,JRJ PRMADSA & WIJATUNGE regaim sine 1977.
1 Ethinice ratios had been responability by UNP 1977,79,81 and 1983.
2 JVP terrorist actvitie and 1988/89 massacre of 100,000(one hunderd thouand youth) by UNP regime
3 Revival of Indo-Sri Lanka accord by UNP in 1987.Indian peace keping operation
4 1980 retrnch of over hundred thousand workes from state and semi -state employee from work places.
CBK regime did not addres 1980 striks problems. CBK did not address UNP anti-workes issuses.
5 CBK had no any nationl economic policy or plan to be re-vitalze and re-developement of SriLlanka economy.
6 Anti-LTTE and anti-terrorist her policy was not clear her regime.
6 As a whole she was not punctual and dis- orgnized her administraion beggining to end. .
7 She was in aristocratcy mentality and arragont set of mind as all Banadarakrs as well.BUt NOT late SWRD.
I have to say SWRD was grate social refomer, and he was not feudal, but in Sri Lanka context SWRD was national bourgeois reformer. He led national bourgeois refomers and bulid SLFP as bourgeios politicial party. His childern having no vision of her father politicial mission; REFORM IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT AND DEMAND she(CBK) not relized.
