Will Man Transform Into Beast?

By A. M. Majeed Muzammil

The political leaders as well as ultranationalists in Sri Lanka seem to be suffering from severe amnesia syndrome. I fail to comprehend as to why they have conveniently forgotten the Muslim political leaders’ iconic contribution to gain independence from the British and are bent on perpetually torturing the Muslim community.

Hon. late T.B. Jayah who played a historical role in the struggle for Independence in the State Council would be turning his grave if he knew how the Muslim community is being systematically marginalized, criminalized, and traumatized by ethno-religious nationalistic forces and that too with the blessings of every successive government which ruled since 1948.

Hon T.B. Jayah was a visionary leader and during the pre-independence era, thought the majority community will safeguard the minorities’ interests – specifically the Muslim community – thereby extending unconditional support towards the introduction of the “Dominion Status Bill” – a Sri Lankan bill sponsored by the late Mr.S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, even at the risk of sacrificing advantages and benefits to his community.

The colonial regime challenged the national leaders to come up with a joint demand for independence and said that “unless all communities come together we cannot grant independence since we are the custodian of the interests of all”. The pivotal role Hon. Jayah and the Muslim community played became crucial during the negotiations for Independence. Had Hon. Jayah, or the Muslim community, sided with the British at that time or had he joined G .G. Ponnambalam who famously clamoured for a “Fifty-Fifty” (50% of the seats for the Sinhalese and 50% for the minorities) stance, the granting of Independence to Ceylon would have been postponed.

Being a truly patriotic citizen, Hon. Jayah spoke for three hours on the Soulbury Report and the White Paper of the United Kingdom Government to pave the way for full independence. It was on this historic occasion that the then Leader of the House in the State Council, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike paid him high tribute when he said: “Credit for the attainment of independence should undoubtedly go to T. B. Jayah for his historic speech in passing the Dominion Bill”.

If he were alive today, he would no doubt be heart-broken to see his vision of the Muslim community living harmoniously and peacefully in a pluralistic mother Lanka, shattered and up in flames, both literally and metaphorically, speaking.

I further wonder if the Islamaphobes are aware that their present Kanatha Cemetery was once a grazing ground and stables for the legendary M.C. Abdul Rahman’s horses as well as parking space for his fleet of horse-carriages. M.C. Abdul Rahman was the 1st Muslim member of the Legislative Council of Sri Lanka in 1889, and being a philanthropist, he donated the Kanatha cemetery to bury dead non-Muslims as a gesture of goodwill. Never in his wildest dreams would he have thought that it would one day be used to cremate the dead bodies of Muslims against their wishes and in direct violation of their religious rites.

In fact, as a spiritual man himself, Abdul Rahman surely would be cursing in his grave, all those who are responsible for roasting the cadavers of the COVID-19 Muslim victims at the very place that he donated. What a gross travesty of justice!

Where were these so-called ultranationalists and bigots who now victimize the Muslim community, during 30 years conflict with the LTTE when Muslims fought valiantly on the ground with our “Tri Forces heroes” against the Tamil Tigers?

Have they forgotten how Muslim officers did their duty to their nation by playing a pivotal role in defeating terrorism? Colonel Tuan Nizam Muthaliff, Commanding Officer, Military Intelligence Corps was a mastermind behind many successful DPU operations including several ops in the eastern province. He befriended Karuna Amman, a former top LTTE military commander, and was responsible for splitting the LTTE.

Another notable figure was Col. Fazly Lafir, one of the founding officers of Sri Lanka Special Force, who died while leading a rescue mission after the LTTE over-ran the Mullaitivu military garrison in 1996.  He was posthumously awarded Parama Weera Vibhushanya, the highest award for military valour. Colonel Lafir was a key figure behind the evolution of SLA Special Forces, which played a key role until the very last minutes of the Eelam war.

Colonel Tuan Nizam Muthaliff and Col. Fazly Lafir who paid the supreme sacrifice to the motherland too would be turning in their graves to note that fellow Muslims are being routinely rounded and hounded by racists and even their dead bodies are being desecrated.

If Dr. Meththika Vithnage, Dr. Channa Perera  Dr. Anil Jasinghe and other Ministry of Health’s Technical committee members who are vehemently opposing burial despite the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines that categorically permits both cremation and burial for the disposal of Covid-19 related death bodies, are so confident of the ground-water contamination theory, why cannot they openly challenge Prof. Malik Peiris, Prof. Vitharane, Dr. Paba Palihawadana and Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe for an open debate to nail down the issue?

It is by now a known fact that neither is there scientific data to support the claim that COVID-19 can spread through dead bodies nor is there any credible evidence of microbiological contamination of groundwater from burial which causes health hazards to the living.

Sri Lanka’s economy is in tatters due to mismanagement and the Fitch International Rankings has downgraded Sri Lanka from B- to CCC in international transactions. A pandemic with no end in sight, the poor people impacted by lockdown, are now out of employment and struggling more than ever, to survive without any means of sustenance.

To deflect the public attention from these socio-economic woes,  the government is simply playing politics with the dead  to agonize  the Muslim community despite the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations office in Sri Lanka, United Nations special experts and regional human rights groups including 58 member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), separately writing to the government calling for the policy to be changed to ensure COVID-19 victims are handled with dignity and human rights of all are protected.

Moreover, the influential Chapter of Buddhist Monks, Amarapura-Ramanya sects too requested President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to permit the burial of the remains of Christians and Muslims who die of Covid 19.

Be that as it may, all international organizations’ appeals and public demonstrations staged against the forced cremation both locally, and in America, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Australia, Japan, Geneva and Qatar, and elsewhere have fallen onto the government’s deaf ear. It is akin to playing the violin to a deaf elephant. In Tamil there is a saying, “you can wake up a sleeping person, but you cannot wake up one that is pretending to be asleep”. So be it.

The mental anguish and trauma of the victim’s families will indelibly be etched in their minds and will certainly remain forever. Nearly 100 dead bodies of Muslims have been forcibly cremated so far and their family members’ curses will befall sooner or later on all the perpetrators who will definitely meet the consequences and severely experience what he or she has viciously done to others.  This is the Universal Law of Karma!

In conclusion, I feel it would be Kala Suri Mohideen Baig who sang an innumerable number of Buddhist devotional songs that would be affected the most, and would no doubt like the rest be turning in his grave at Kuppiyawatta Muslim Burial Ground in the knowledge of the 20 day old Muslim baby boy Shaykh who was heartlessly and inhumanely denied further testing, and was later incinerated. He may well be contemplating lines from his immortal song – the famous Buddan Saranan Gachchami: “Minisa Thirisan Wayeedho”, Will man transform into beast?

    No Sinhalese hates or dislikes Muslims (despite political goons trying to create it). They love Muslims (the most peaceful community of SL) and value their contribution to SL. More examples include Sir Mohammad Macan Marker, Sir Farik Cader, Mohommad Nisham, AHM Fowzie (whatever politics he did), MH Maharoof (whatever politics he did), Mohammad Mutalif, etc. Sinhalese are ever grateful for these Muslims too.

    The cremation decision has nothing to do with hating Muslims or disliking Muslims. Just look at the number of Sinhalese who patronize Muslim businesses today? Millions. Nothing has changed.

    Do not turn the cremation issue into a religious or communal issue. It is not. It is just government policy. You cannot satisfy everyone (unless you run an ice cream charity instead of a country).

    Sinhalas love Muslims and wish them safety, well and good health always. May the Merciful One be pleased with both Sinhalas and Muslims, both his children, and keep them safe.

      Gatam,
      .
      How do you know that SINHALESE in general would not hate muslims ?

      Are u narrating fairy tales ? Not to widen the wounds further, but why not we discuss the truths openly ? Why were then innocient muslims attacked and demolished their livelyhood after easter sunday disaster ? This would not have been the case in a civilized culture/Europe.
      Do we need further info to realize that EASTER SUNDAY DISASTER was a plan of RAJAPAKSHE MLECHCHA FAMILY ? Calling themselves sinhala buddhists, but to attack tamils with iron sticks and “alawanguwa” in Pettah were not overlooked by entire world in 1983. This is the rascal culture they are used to. Not to minorities, they attack also anti-Rajapakshe sinhalayas in public. That shows the levels of civlized nature of sinhalayas in the country. Rajapakshes love those facists and any kind of high criminals, that is what they are kept above in crime friends corners of the country. යකාගෙ හැටියට තමයි විමානය ගොඩ නැගෙන්නෙ ? The wimanya is built today, with almost everything is set upside down. Nevertheless, crime friendly majority would not utter a single word against oil price reduction concession yet today ? Prices of dails needs have gone up in 25% to 80%, but they have been singing the housanas pleasing racism friendy Rajaakshes. If you have any contra arugments please add !

        continuing.

        That is why you just need to recheck if it is right to generalize your comment. Looking back, I feel our sinhalayas are the most racial in that region. Or going beyond jewish hatreds against palastinian arabs. Tattamamas would do anything and everything not knowing the ABCD in any problem, but being ignored about any real issues. They are born pinguththarayas, living in robes, but continuing their racism promotions from dawn to dusk. There is a monk called ” KOTUWE HAMUDURUWO and Madagoda Abhayathissa” these tattamamas only promote sinhala right wing politics. Just imagine if they are well aware what they are talking about !
        They dont care the little about minority rights. But I love a tiny portion of monks, that practise true buddhism.

        I would offer alms to the kind of monks, until I die oneday while all other Tattamamas (90 % of buddhagama monks) just thieves in robe costume. They dont know what they are talking about. Kotuwe hamuduruwo is a joker. He behaves like a superstar but begging every euro of ones living in Italy or Dubai. Now having built his palace, he has been enjoying and pleasing COLOMBO ladies. This is what I got to know form reliable sources.

          Maybe Gatam lives in another country, and doesn’t know what goes on here . Or pretends he doesn’t know.

        You are getting distracted. Rajapaksas are crooks and murderers. I agree. But don’t use that irrelevant thing to make an unrelated point.

        There are no bad feelings among Sinhalese for Muslims. Absolutely none. One extreme example. Even two hardcore racist Buddhist monks (with filthy mouths) have come forward to demand burial for Muslims.

    Tylical Muslim manipulation of facts.Laffir and mulatiff are malays. Descendants of mercenaries brought by the British. Lot of muslims that helped the army were malays. They have no options but to side with the sinhalese. Even T. B jaya is a Malay. I know a few malay rugby players from school. They drank, smoked and dated sinhalese girls. They dont believe in the Koran, Allah or Mohammed. Wasim thajudeen was malay. Got his comeuppance for screwing outside his religion.

      Not true.

      Most army secret service, LRRP and DPU members were Muslims from Jaffna. Remember they were evicted out in 1990? Obviously their names and heroics cannot be openly celebrated. They had the advantage of the northern dialect. So they were very valuable.

      Muslim writers and politicians are wedging maximum between Tamils and Sinhalese to make the Sinhala Buddhists to relent for their demand.
      Muslim politicians, being part of Muslim-Sinhalese Governments for 70 years, taught the Sinhala Buddhist masters how to be corrupted, using Riyal Bars. Why can’t they bring some more of that, so the exchange problem too will be solved, as a side benefit.

    Muslims being a minority group should have sided with other minorities in SL . Instead they benefited from the Tamils sufferings.
    The majority made use of them to deny basic human RIGHTS of the Tamils. They especially the Muslim Politicians do behave selfishly i.e supporting the 20th Amendment that had created a dictator with great powers and be above the laws of the land.

      What happened in Black August 1990? At least now those who occupy Muslim lands in Jaffna must hand them back to rightful Muslim owners.

      Naman,
      What bloody human rights that majority Sinhalayo have denied to Demala Tamils who were brought to Sinhale by colonial rulers as slaves and abandoned in this country. Be grateful to Sinhalayo for giving you guys citizenship with equal rights to live in this Paradise Island instead of chasing back to the cesspool from where your ancestors were picked up by colonial rulers.

      It is not majority Sinhalayo who are denying basic human rights of Tamils. It is your own Malabar Vellala Tamils who oppress low caste Tamils (Dalits) denying their basic human rights. Do Vellala Tamils allow a Dalit to drink water from a well belong to them?

      “The majority made use of them to deny basic human RIGHTS of the Tamils.”

        “Be grateful to Sinhalayo for giving you guys citizenship with equal rights to live in this Paradise Island”
        Will you be grateful if you yourself are treated as an equal citizen by the Malwatta hamuduruwos?

    During British rule, Tamils, Muslims, Malays and Burghers were in the British camp and massacred Sinhalayo. In 1915, Muslims joined Brits and started anti-Buddhist riots in Gampola by attacking a Buddhist procession. Brits used that as an excuse and massacred Sinhala Buddhists using Tamils, Muslims, Malays and Burghers. Same thing happened after 1818 and 1848 liberation struggles launched by Sinhalayo.
    Did any Tamil, Muslim, Malay or Burgher face firing squads of Brits for fighting against Brits? No. It was Sinhala Buddhists who faced firing squads.
    Did any Hindu Poosari, Muslim Mullah or Christian clergy face firing squads of Brits for fighting against Brits? No. Several Buddhist monks faced firing squads of Brits.
    Tamils and Muslims who were in the British camp jump in to the band wagon of Sinhalayo when they realized that British are going to leave.
    British did not give Independence to Sinhale because Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim or Malay politicians agitated. They left because Briton got bankrupt after WWII and Sinhale became an unprofitable venture.

      EE,

      The 1915 incident unfortunately did happen but it died down faster than it started. Most killings and burning of Muslims were done by Sikh soldiers the British brought to quell the violence. The British too had a score to settle with Muslims in 1915 after getting a beating in Turkey.

      It was Sinhalese who appealed to the British to stop harming Muslims. As per the 1815 English-Sinhala Pact the British had to pay heed and they did.

      Both sides were at fault in 1915. You cannot blame one.

      Didn’t you read about the Muslim man who twice donated his best elephant to the Kandy Buddhist temple? He was shown on a currency note.

      Don’t forget the 1883 Buddhist-Christian riot in Kotahena. Same ethnicity.

      Although Malay soldiers (were forced to) killed a large number of Sinhalese in Wellassa they eventually joined the Sinhalese. That was a brave choice which you would not make.

      Mughals and Sinhalese were together against the common enemy (Hindus). SL had a few Muslim kings and queens during that time. Rajapaksa bulldozed a historical site of one of them in 2020 because the prince and the queen were Muslims!! That Muslim prince is worshiped as a regional god (Gale Bandara Deviyo) in Kurunegala by Buddhists even today.

        GATAM,
        Don’t try to whitewash Muslims. Sinhalayo know the behavior of Muslims very well. You know what Sinhalayo say about the rotating ‘Thoppiya.
        In 1915, Muslims started the problem by throwing stones at a Buddhist Procession. How the hell these ‘Para’ Muslims saved by Sinhala Buddhists do such a thing. British massacred Sinhalayo using ‘Para’ people claiming that it was an uprising against Brits by Sinhalayo.
        Muslims worked for Brits as spies and helped to catch Sinhalayo who gave leadership in uprisings against Brits.
        1883 riot same ethnicity but between Sinhala Buddhists and Sinhala+Dravida Christians who got swollen heads because they had the backing of Brits. 1883 riot was started by Christians by attacking a Buddhist procession.

        “SL had a few Muslim kings and queens during that time.”
        What time are you talking? I am not aware of any Muslim Kings. Can you name them? To my knowledge Sinhalayo did not accept any one who is not a Buddhist as a King. Nayakkars became Buddhists and took Sinhala Names.

    If King Senerath who saved Demala Muslim refugees from Hindusthan when they faced persecution by Portuguese come to how the descendants of those Muslims he saved:
    • Carried out terrorist attacks and killed hundreds of civilians and ruin the economy;
    • Vandalize Sinhala Buddhist heritage sites in the Eastern Province;
    • Bury Muslim dead bodies in Sinhala heritage sites and claim that they are Muslim burial grounds;
    • Encroach land belong to Temples;
    • Destroy wild life sanctuaries and build settlements;
    • Plan to convert Sinhale to a Muslim Caliphate;
    • Train extremists who might turn out to be terrorists in Madrasas;
    • Occupy land belong to Sinhalayo who left Eastern Province due to LTTE Tamil terrorism without returning to rightful owners;
    • Occupying business premises in towns in the Eastern Province that belonged to Sinhalayo without returning to rightful owners

    He will go to Portugal and ask them to finish the job they started.

    This is what the usual Muslim writers’ cry baby logic. For what in the heaven T.B.Jeya was dying for freedom if Muslim politicians are going to sign 20A & turn the country into another Hitler’s Hell? Hakeem explained his assistant did that to get Royals to force cancel the 30 years ago proposal to split Kalmunai into two localities as it is too big. He said voting for 20A was a justified action to save Kalmunai from Tamils so he refused to fire the MPs unlike others in SJB. T.B. Jaya didn’t remember to turn in the coffin to other side & sleep, when you did that kind of shameless action. Or Is that was that time Muslim politicians’ anti-West-ant-American action to struggle their best to separate Ceylon from British’s fair and just administration? You were sleeping when your Ministers like Hezbollah, Rishard, and Hakeem bring Riyal gold bars to turn Kattankudy in to part of Arabia and stuffed some of them into the mouth of beggar Royal politicians and corrupting the Sinhala Buddhist. Instead this cry baby logics, bring in some more Riyal bars; SBs will change their policy?

      Muslims were never sincere to any body-not even to themselves. They were spies against the Tamils expecting something in return, but now they are eating the humble pie.

        This was not overlooked at the time, that underaged Rhyzana girl was beheaded in Saudi few years ago.
        :
        Muslim ministers had only enjoyed their foreign trips- along with Rajapakshe man – Dilan PERERA.
        .
        Do you guys think, if Ali Sabry was then appointed as minsiter of Justice, would he have reacted saving that girl s life ? No…. They let any abusive men to ruin their community. Remember ALi Sabry s public statements shortly before Gotler s election ? I thought Ali Sabry is uneducated unlernt rascals born to muslim community. His is similar to a servant boy of Rajapakshe family.
