Although the word “woman” has historically been associated with domestic responsibilities, family security, and social relationships, in the modern era women have moved beyond these traditional boundaries and become a powerful force for economic development. Today, female leadership in entrepreneurship is not only a reflection of social change but also a direct contribution to the economic progress of a country. The concept of “Women and Entrepreneurship” has become an important discussion in society as women transform economic activities through creativity, sensitivity, and long-term vision.

Entrepreneurship is a journey that combines risk-taking, innovation, resource management, and the identification of market opportunities. Women bring unique strengths to this field, particularly their ability to recognize social needs and manage multiple responsibilities effectively. By balancing both family life and professional life, women demonstrate that leadership is determined not by gender but by capability, dedication, and commitment.

In developing countries such as Sri Lanka, female entrepreneurship plays a particularly important role. Women are increasingly participating in rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and making significant contributions to sectors such as food processing, handicrafts, agribusiness, tourism services, and digital businesses. These ventures not only increase household income but also stimulate local economic activity and development.

Despite these achievements, women entrepreneurs continue to face several challenges. Limited access to finance, lack of collateral, social barriers, restricted networking opportunities, and insufficient technical knowledge often hinder their growth. In particular, the inability to provide collateral or necessary documentation when applying for financial assistance from banks and financial institutions remains a major obstacle. At the same time, digital transformation has created new opportunities for women entrepreneurs. Through social media marketing, e-commerce platforms, and online payment systems, small businesses can now reach not only local markets but also international customers. A home-based business, when supported with effective digital marketing strategies, can grow into a global enterprise. This has introduced a modern economic model that allows women to generate income without being limited by time or location.

Entrepreneurship also serves as a powerful tool for social empowerment. When women achieve financial independence, the overall well-being of their families improves. Children gain better educational opportunities, and women gain stronger decision-making power within their households and communities. In the long term, this contributes to social equality and economic stability.

Therefore, it is important to create a supportive and sustainable environment for women entrepreneurs. Business training programs, mentorship networks, microfinance facilities, and incubation centers can provide essential guidance and support. In addition, promoting entrepreneurship education in universities and vocational institutions will help cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among young women and prepare the next generation of business leaders.
Successful women entrepreneurs demonstrate that the ability to recognize opportunities rather than limitations is a key factor in achieving success. By overcoming challenges and introducing innovative solutions, they inspire society and prove that entrepreneurship is a journey defined not by gender but by determination and ability.
