“If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have a paradise in a few years.” ~ Bertrand Russell
Anura Kumara Dissanayake fought the Sri Lankan elites and won. His party routed this same elite class one month later. The story of the Ceylonese elite against the common man has had its fascinating past. Its gradual escalation in stature since Independence and its all-consuming ramifications in the twenty first century were all too manifest in the sudden collapse of the country’s economy. Ceylon, which was once described as a way too ahead of Singapore in the nineteen fifties, reached her the most distressing stage in the year twenty twenty two (2022) with the shameful declaration of bankruptcy. Who was responsible for the collapse and who managed the country’s economy for the preceding seventy five years in that deplorable phase, needs no more explanation nor any justification.
The Colombo elite, foreign-educated with all the educational qualifications under the sun and the arrogant breed of the class that navigated the land’s economy and its governance machinery had no answer. Corruption that had no place in politics or in governance before the nineteen sixties assumed an irreplaceable tier in the ladder of administration. In the fifties and sixties, those who engaged in politics lost their assets; some had to mortgage their Colombo Seven properties to finance their election campaigns. SWRD Bandaranaike, albeit his radical and shortsighted policies on language and economic management, had to obtain a Bank loan placing his Rosemead Place property as collateral. The Senanayakes, Kotelawalas and Jayewardenes did not have to depend on the corrupt Mudalalis and businessman’s contributions to run their campaigns.
That was another era and its death had already occurred. The corrupt practices that enveloped the body politic of the country has already claimed its drastic results. While the lot of the rural man, both of the Up North and the Deep South, degenerated from year to year, those who engaged in the art of running the government machinery, politicos as well as the bureaucracy, made a steep a climb on the socioeconomic journey. And they did it with enviable ease. The elite achieved its well-cushioned social status; their presence in the state-sponsored cocktail parties and five-star hotel dining rooms extended its cavalier joy well beyond all imagination. The endurance of the rural man’s suffering was too weak to overcome the deformed desires of his counterpart elite.
This distorted social condition continued for almost five decades, unbroken and undisturbed. The poor got poorer by the day while the elite became richer by the hour. The fissures of this social paradigm had to come; its explosion was waiting to happen; only a triggering mechanism was missing. And the Rajapaksas provided that unkind hand. Within one single decade, a collection of members of one single family conspired, willy nilly, to set ablaze a long dormant ember of political corruption and dishonesty. That is history now.
But the elite class that sustained this despicable family-cabal may have wrongly assumed that they could continue with their society-destroying modus operandi unimpeded. Sadly, they were mistaken. A social class that nourished and nurtured only one of its exclusive segments cannot be indulging in that disturbing sustenance without coming into clash with its counterpart segments, socially, economically and politically. The elite may have thought that the current President and his political Party were made of the same fragile ‘stuff’ of that vulnerable segment.
They were sadly mistaken. That mistake may not have been due solely to the falsehood that has been nourishing the social paradigm that was in existence since the elite class was in power from 1947. That false premise was founded on another social falsehood that each and every ruling power was dependent upon continuing the flow of money and luxuries to the holders of that power. AKD and the NPP were not fundamentally and ideologically committed to that premise. Having been promulgating a total contradictory stance to the status quo, having been preaching and genuinely being seen as emerging from the same working class of the vast masses in the country, AKD and the NPP cannot deviate from that primary assertion.
Furthermore, the country’s abysmal record with its performance in the sphere of economy and its related sub-phases, the expectations of the vast masses went sky-high after they were installed in power in the 2024 elections. Therefore, committing to the fulfillment of the pledges so made on the election platforms takes a position a priori. Such a theoretical posture would demand sincere commitment not only from the top leadership of the government, it also challenges the second and third tiers of the government and to a large extent from the grassroots of the party that worked tirelessly for the election of the NPP to power.
The polarization of our society is complete. Us vs. them or elite vs the commoner cannot be more elaborately and succinctly defined than it is being evident today. The country’s official political Opposition has decided to be intimate with that dreaded elite class; its unceasing justification of the terrible injustices visited upon the common man by the Rajapaksas and Wickremesinghes have positioned the Opposition in a very unenviable status, condemning them to utter disgust and disparage of the masses. However, the continuing barrage of questions and demands for explanations from the NPP and its leader President Dissanayake seems to have had some effect on the mainstream media and its siblings in the social media.
Apparently, it renders some justification for their survival in the fast-paced media market to be destructively critical of the government’s manner of handling matters of governance affairs. While the media should be critical, both constructively as well as in a critically justifiable manner of the government, its policies and their implementation, the public conduct of AKD, his Cabinet, NPP parliamentarians and in all other related matters, they, the media, must also show some discipline in the manner in which they disseminate information to the public. When that discipline breaks down, the main stream media and the social media lose their marketplace; but if that loss of the marketplace is associated with indulgence in gossip-mongering, the possible resultant anarchic situation would in turn convert a possible anarchy into uncontrolled mass upheaval. It is not the time for such a socially detrimental paradigm.
Nevertheless, we seem to be very fortunate that AKD, at each of his turns, seems to be acting with not only skill and intellectually rich manner, he is displaying to the country that he is a wise man. It is one thing to be led by a bright and skilled politician, but to be gifted with a wise man on top is indeed the fortune of the country. Such men are far and in between. The elite class will not give up its battle; nor its hope.
The elite is entrenched in a last-minute war. Its very existence and its survival are intertwined with what is being exposed on the conduct of the leaders of the previous governments. The people’s cry for justice and accountability shall not stop until all and every wrong-doer is accounted for. The problem the government is facing is not only handling of the corruption and accountability or lack thereof, its main concern is handling that very issue while making every attempt to manage an economy with the ultimate aim of bringing relief and prosperity to the voters who made no mistake in electing them. In the coming months, the elite vs AKD/NPP battle will get much more demanding and defined.
Can AKD maintain a process of introducing prophylactic measures to our wounded economy and still be engaged in a brutal warfare with the country’s elite class whose fundamental function has been to aggressively engage in resisting the changes that are being introduced? A system change does not have to be clothed in a violent and revolutionary garb. It could be disguised and visit you accompanied with multifaceted roles and a clever and a wise leader would not only recognize them, he would also adopt them as his own.
The battle lines have been drawn; the elite that has been sulking away since the NPP came to power should not be afforded any chance at redeeming itself. Having brought down the country since its Independence, the elite does not deserve another chance, none at all.
Power is no alien creature to these elite groups; they have been immersed in it for seventy six years and the results that they can show is abject bankruptcy. Any movement from there is oriented only in one direction- up. But in the same vein, the NPP government simply cannot relax. Remember, they have to be successful again only once whereas AKD and the NPP machinery have to be near-perfect at all times. That is not easy.

It wasn’t 75 years of mismanagement that bankrupted the country. It was three years of rule by a cabal of idiots led by a prime idiot (elected by 6.9 million voters) that did it.

“It wasn’t 75 years of mismanagement that bankrupted the country. It was three years of rule by a cabal of idiots led by a prime idiot (elected by 6.9 million voters) that did it.”
You cannot cover up the economic crisis and political crisis by blaming only three years Gotabaya regime or Cabal which is really mismanagement and misuse of power. Of course you should have saved the country from declaring bankruptcy. But the real economic problem is the accumulated debt, increased corruption and misuse of power by both UNP and SLFP.
In 2018, Sri Lanka’s gross external debt in foreign currency reached a high of $51.816 billion USD in June 2018, increasing from $50.154 billion USD in the previous quarter, according to data from CEIC Data.

“That’s an increase of less than 1%. “
Yes the increase from 50.154 to 51.816 may be less than 1% but The foreign currency debt of 51.816 Billion US Dollar is out 94.45 Billion dollar of GDP. This does not include internal debt. You can now calculate what % of debt out GDP (I think it is more than 75% of GDP. The country was almost in a bankruptcy state in 2018 before Gotabaya. In 2028, Sri Lanka has to start paying debt which is now much more than in 2022 with high interest rates. It is not an easy task for any government to bring back to normal. It will take decades even if you have strict financial control.
/

WW,
thank you. In our society, people don’t care about the facts. Not by any means. They simply lose their emotions and start acting like Z-genzies. However, it has also spread to nearby nations. Permament burning is currently engulfing Nepal.
Since no one could garner more votes than MS in 2015 at that time, we elected him president. Ended up in a mess. However, despite his lack of experience in governance, Gotabaya was brought in and ultimately turned Sri Lanka into anarchy.
Nonetheless, Gota’s parliamentary mandate allowed for the appointment of an experienced politician to succeed him after he was expelled by radical Aragala demonstrators.
People are now discussing more experienced politicians than inexperienced ones both inside and outside of Nepal due to the burning of monarchical Nepalis.
One could argue that Buddhism is a non-violent religion, but in Nepal, we are forced to witness contradictions, and the degree of brutality committed by Nepalis is beyond all morality and ethics.
Inexperienced Zelenski, a former artist, is elected, pushing Ukraine to an unprecedented war. Now, a man whose performance is seriously questionable is in charge of Sri Lanka.
Even today’s teenagers can see that AKD’s poor performance aside from his exaggerated and blatantly false accusations against opponents is becoming evident. Shameless actions include not even dressing appropriately for official visits that represent 22 million Sri Lankans.

Would AKD Be a victim of elitism…. One can judge, and Sri Lanka can judge. WHat NPP is doing now…………Exposing Drug Containers and bribery—sends a strong message to future generations about integrity. Figures like Namal Rajapaksa, Ranil, CHandrika, and groups like Sri Sena have not appreciated these efforts to catch containers and past bribe-takers……..fFor them and past leaders, this reflects elitism, where power and influence are concentrated among a select few. Yet, NPP
is shaping society and setting a positive example for our future.

” Corruption that had no place in politics or in governance before the nineteen sixties assumed an irreplaceable tier in the ladder of administration.”
It is true that there is no corruption in the Nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties. There was no need for money or land as the rulers are from rich families with landlords. But, as author highlighted discrimination started with language policies and high scale massacre of Tamils in 1958 followed by Sinhala only act in 1956. SWRD was assassinated by a Buddhist Monk. Even though there is no corruption, Violent Buddhism came into politics of Sri Lanka around that time. In 1972, special status to Buddhism came in to the constitution to protect violent Buddhists. In 1978, UNP introduced executive power to protect violent Rulers and violent Buddhists from corruption, misuse of Power, racism, and religious terrorism.
It is now difficult to understand that AKD is only against corruption or corruption and violent racism using the Buddhism.
It is true that Buddhism is a peaceful religion but the buddhism in Sri lanka politics is a violent buddhism.IF AKD wants to be the first one who will create a country without violent racism and violent buddhism it is great, But, if he only consider corruption it will be a disaster not to AKD but to the people of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka.

“Elites” refer to a small, privileged group within a society that possesses a disproportionate amount of power, wealth, skill, or influence. This group controls significant social resources, allowing them to affect society’s direction, governance, and outcomes. Elites can operate in various spheres, including politics, economics, religion, and culture, and their influence often stems from their positions and control over institutional frameworks. :)))

Douglas / September 7, 2025
The first thing to get the Sri Lankans to know and understand is the meaning of ‘ELITISM’ and who is an ‘ELITE’.
‘Elitism’ is the recognition that someone is superior to others and deserves special treatment. An ‘Elite’ is someone powerful, intellectually, professionally, or socially superior.
Do you think that all the people who have been selected to run the State Functions so far, considered and treated as ‘Elite’ are, in a real sense, ‘Elites’? For example, consider the personalities of Rajapakses, Ranil, Sajith, Champika, Gammampila, and all other cohorts (intellectuals, professionals, and other rouges, including the ‘Saffron Clothed’ brigade) gathered in their company. Can any of them be classified as ‘Elites’ and possess qualities of ‘Elitism’? Not at all in my opinion.

II – However, over the lapse of decades, the people, having undergone immense grief and sufferings at the hands of the ‘Elites’, a new class of leaders and leadership have been chosen to run the States’ Functions’.
It is a ‘NEW’ class and obviously an ‘Enigma’. The emergence of that ‘New’ class is unbearable and intolerable to both the perceived and established ‘Elites’. Therefore, it is understandable that they would fight tooth and nail to break the newly emerged ‘Elite’.Their ‘Frustrations’ are demonstrated in making filthy, degrading, and classifying the ‘New Elite’, referring to their ‘Birth’ (to poor parents) ‘Color’, ‘Dress’, and ‘Lack of English knowledge’, etc. One such example is naming Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the President-elect, born to a ‘Labourer father and an ‘Illiterate mother’ as ‘THAMBUTHEGAMA BURAMPI’ by a ‘Perceived Professional’ commentator of this page.
This ‘New’ class, with the leadership of AKD and overwhelming power and support from the so far downtrodden, will definitely establish a new ‘Elite’ and bring new and real meaning to ‘Elitism’ in the country. Wish them all the success!

D,
Delivering is what counts, regardless of whether the person comes from an elite or other social strata. Take a look at Burkno Fasso and young leader Abraham Taore. Since he was appointed as that African nation’s leader, he is performing admirably.
We find it amusing that you believe that the AKD’s performance thus far as the head of state of a nation that was dubbed the “oldest democracy in Asia” should be highly commended. To me and other people who take progress seriously, the episodes in the economically collapsing nation are clearly comparable, and it is evident that the AKD’s seven or eight foreign trips as the incumbent president lacked the promised investments. Because of his reluctance to attend international summits, the government has also failed to uphold the nation’s image. Maybe in the coming months, this nation’s external affairs will take a turn for the worse. However, I just so happened to compare the growth in foreign exchange reserves over the past ten months since the launch of the NPP government.

The “common man” or whatever you call him overthrowing the “elite” is not a panacea to the ills of society. Forcible wealth distribution (through the confiscation of land) caused hyperinflation in Zimbabwe. How did the “common man” behave during Aragalaya? Burning and looting will scare away the IMF. Either the local military or some foreign military will have to take over the country to stop the anarchy. In fact, that is what some pro-LTTE secessionist elements are secretly hoping for.

Hello Lester,
Then why do you keep screwing it up?
By the way your Zionist Terrorists have made a big mistake bombing Doha. Pretty soon you, DTG and other Christian Zionists will be treated as Pariahs.
It is apparent to many that Trump organised the Hamas Negotiations so that Israel could sabotage them by killing all of the Hamas Leadership in Doha. They failed to kill the Leadership, but included a Qatari in their Bombing.
The US called Qatar 10 minutes after the strike. The location was near to my old Airbus Office just beside the Philippine Embassy

Scott,
First all of, my sincere condolences as some of your former colleagues may have fallen victim to that attack.
It’s right around 11/9, with Trump being a native New Yorker, what else should one expect? Brilliant timing by Israel.
They (Israel) killed the leadership and Qatar was complicit. The air defense system was not activated. Other Arab countries were also complicit, given the distance from Israel to Qatar. Israel would not violate airspace without advance coordination.
These events are no surprise. As I explained 24 months ago, when your mates Deif & Sinwar were still out & about, the Arab leaders are cheap opportunists. Now they are dumping Hamas in favor of cooperation with Israel.
/
LankaScot / September 10, 2025
Hello Lester,
Don’t gloat too soon, the Hamas Leadership has survived. Israel assassinated 5 Hamas personnel and one Qatari. Qatar depends on Al Udeid for its Early Warning Radar. Trump had the links shut down. Coastal Surveillance Radars will not detect fast moving F35 Aircraft.
Trump had colluded with Netanyahu regarding the current Ceasefire Negotiations in order to get the Hamas Leadership in Doha. Trump has had to backtrack on his claim that the US called Qatar to warn them. The Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani (who I have met) called out Trump’s lies that they were warned before the attack. In fact the first strikes took place 10 minutes before the Americans phoned. A British, Airbus KC3 Re-fuelling Aircraft was used to refuel the Israeli Aircraft. Trump and Starmer will have a lot of questions to answer.
Best regards
/
Lester / September 11, 2025
This is very similar to when the US assassinated Qassem Soleimani on Iraqi soil. In that case, I don’t believe Iraq had prior notification. On January 3, 2020, the Iraqi Parliament passed a non-binding resolution on January 5, 2020, calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
No similar reaction from Qatar. The Sheik is doing damage control. That is expected. As I said, the Arabs are dumping Hamas. Hamas is a liability. Trump will offer incentives for the Arabs to do business with Israel. That was one reason for the 7th October attacks.
“A British, Airbus KC3 Re-fuelling Aircraft was used to refuel the Israeli Aircraft.”
KSA had to give permission for the refueling. Perhaps Head Chopper was also informed of the mission.

Looks like game over for Hamas. They may surrender soon, now that the funding is running out and the leadership has nowhere to hide. Israel is following Gotha’s playbook: take out the leadership (command & control), the juniors will fold like a cheap suit. Liezeera propaganda, faux Sultan Erdogan, the easy money from wealthy Arab pimps – there is no “out” for Hamas. The day of reckoning has come for the fascist buggers.
There is nothing in the whole frame of man which seems to me so unaccountable as that thing called conscience.

Yes, the Trolls hide under Bridges waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting. Some people say that Troll “means a ugly person ( ugly meaning personality ) who is not happy unless they are offending and causing offense”. Sounds like Lester😉.
Best regards

Hello LS,
Thanks, w hat causes a person to develop multiple personalities? Deepthi, the person who upvotes for their own comments, is where? Why does Lester go to such lengths to be noticed in this forum? Assuming he is an academic, you recently mentioned his sabbatical, but he acts like a teenager today. What the devil is preventing him from closing his bold and italic fonts? It’s really unclear to me why CT-admin hasn’t noticed this yet today.

Leela/Babalawathie,
Didn’t “Jit” (rhymes with the four letter business) tell you to get lost? Before that, Douglas. Three people in one week told you to take a hike. If CT had an Olympics for classhole, you would win gold medal. You are a boring FOB. Your broken English and South Indian sambar diet doesn’t impress anyone.

“Iran will cease to exist in 2025”
“Turks are Arabs”
“Rohingyas are Chinese”
“Trump’s tariffs will go in six months “
“Testosterone makes me smarter, even with one nut”
-All gems from Lester.

OC,
We questioned about resetting the italics mode on the fonts that his writing produced. As usual, however, MAHADANMUTTA has a feudian slip. None of us can go any farther with “Malle pol” answers.

I’m not responsible for your financial situation, Scott. Blame Cameron who allowed the Brexit referendum. I told you to invest in AI stocks two years ago. April 2025 was another outstanding opportunity.
Rather than letting people go to the Middle East, the Sri Lankan Government should give everyone $500 USD and access to the US stock market. Why clean houses for Arabs when you can make more money sitting on the lou twice a week? Either active or passive investing works. The S&P 500 (top 500 companies) in the US have returned 10% on average for the past decade. Some of these big tech companies have a balance sheet exceeding the GDP of developing countries. It’s very easy to compound your money with these tech stocks. Let’s say I bought 100 shares of Amazon before 2022. After the last forward split (20-1), I would have 2000 shares. Every $1 increase in the Amazon stock price now yields a $2000 return.
In December 2018, 100 shares of AMZN could have been bought for $7510 USD. Less than a Pajero in Sri Lanka.

But he didn’t, and he has one nut less to show for it……

Readers,
–
This is firsthand knowledge of the current government’s deceptions.
This is proof that the Peratugami office in Yakkala was attacked by the FACIST JVP on September 2.
YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAf2ZVbkGwo
The court has decided to place it under police custody until this incident is thoroughly investigated.
The government should now be able to openly defend its lies. Lies are ingrained in Jeppos. This is the government’s actual situation in this case. Why in the world are they acting so blatantly?
