Dr.Sivalingam Sivananthan, a distinquished old boy of Jaffna Hindu College (1968 -75) and currently professor of physics at the University of Illinois Chicago and founder of Sivananthan Laboratories in Bolingbrook, USA, has been named a White House Champion of Change, an honour that recognizes immigrant entrepreneurs. He was given this honor at a ceremony at the White House on May 29th 2013.
Sivananthan’s work with a semiconductor material, mercury cadmium telluride or MCT, is at the heart of night vision technology and made the raid that took down Osama Bin Laden on a moonless night possible. Developing “technology that protects our protectors” has given him the opportunity to give back to his adopted country, said Sivananthan.
The honor recognizes immigrant innovators and entrepreneurs—”the best and brightest from around the world who are helping create American jobs, grow the economy and make our nation competitive in the world,” the White House said in a press release.

Look, this kind of thing is NOT done in a vacuum. You need a huge supporting infrastructure as well as a tradition of research. It took the USA one century to establish it, and japan started doing so in the early 1900s under the Empire where it became a copier of technology..
Even Singapore is not yet a leader in science but a copier. Each country has to go through the phase of copying the technology and THEN becoming an innovator. China went into the technology-copying stage only under Den-Xio-Ping.
In Colombo, we haven’t even started copying technology. if you want liquid helium, you can NOT get it. You cannot even run existing technology. If you want a small fuse for your spectroscope you have to order it from somewhere and wait. if you a chemical analysis, SO we must encourage these people to go abroad, become proficient and work in Sri lankan industries — that is, the private sector must invite them and engage them in projects. It is not really the government. The Last minster of science was busy with the constitution, and the new minister of science was busy with impeaching the Madam Chief Justice. The Ceylon Electricity Board has no long term plan and runs from one financial crisis to another, while the traditional-Left and the JVP and the UNP are agitating as usual on any matter what ever, and disrupting the smooth flow of the economy.
Meanwhile we have a Kelaniya academic who preaches that science and technology are a Western conspiracy and is pure Patta-Pal-Boru (utter falsehoods).
Give another 10 years and the private sector will be mature enough to get these scientists on board. But the TNA and the Singhala may have started another of their favourite past time of battling each other over tit bits of power and land. In the US it is the private sector which is driving this stuff.

Not true. It has taken more than a century of battling for the US to get there, from the time of Abe Lincoln to Martin Luther King etc. Even now skin colour and race matters very much.
The vast majority of the prison population is Blacks and Hispanics. There are some 20% hispanics in the US, but look how few of them are in strong positions. The same is true of Blacks. Look at the statistics.
Actually the statistics for minorities in Sri Lanka are much better than for the US.
The same goes for health care and the protective social net. if you are a poor black or a poor Hispanic in the US, you are done for. But if you are a celebrety, you get away with anything An O. J. Simpson can sail thhrough the court system in the US, but the vast majority of young blacks get pulled over for the slightest traffic infraction or by-law behaviour and get jailed. The same is true for canadian and American aboriginals. Canada even has separate hospitals for the Aboriginals as they don’t want to mix white patients with the `red skins’ who have 50% incidence of Tuberculosis.
If you merely spend a couple of years at Harvard or Stanford as a foreign student you don’t see or understand America.

I am proud of the achievement of Dr Sivalingam. I hope he will arrange a flight to Jaffna via Colombo and show his appreciation to his Alma mater.
The traditional schools in Jaffna such as Jaffna Hindu Ladies, Vembadi and Chundikuli are still in pristine condition. Today the old girls of Chundikuli are having a concert by the Colombo Philharmonic Orchestra at the Ladies College, Colombo, as a fund raiser for the building fund of Chundikuli. These schools are far better than any girls school anywhere else in the world, for the education of teenage girls. There are new apartment complexes coming up in Jaffna to provide accommodation for those who prefer to live in Sri Lanka, at least during the winter.
I was in Passekudah which is dotted with new hotels and full of Sri Lankans enjoying perhaps the best beach in Sri Lanka. Batticoloa is also a well developed town with well paved roads, the new kallady bridge and the restored fort. There are low cost flights to Batticoloa. There are also new hotels and apartment complexes in Batticoloa.
The Tamil Diaspora should visit these beautiful places, support their old schools and contribute to the peace & development of their places of origin. Every Action has an Equal & Opposite Reaction. Avoid confrontational politics in Sri Lanka.

For the information of those who think the grass is much greener in the west, here is a comparison.
For the thousands of students with a good degree or equivalent and a command of English, obtained with the help of our free education system, seeking greener pastures abroad is a good option. If the parents of Dr. Sivaligam went to USA when he was a toddler without a good job, he would not have achieved the heights he has achieved.

Healthcare
In Sri Lanka we have provided free health care for all who need, practically from the time of gaining independence. In USA, the biggest economy in the World, 7% of children under 18, 21.3% in the 18 to 64 age group and 18.2% of the population over 64 years do not have healthcare.
GDP Growth
The GDP of Northern Province was 22% in 2011 & 27% in 2012. Over 90% of the loans taken by the government were invested in improving the infrastructure in the Northern Province. GDP Growth in Sri Lanka was 8.0% in 2010 & 8.3% in 2011. In USA it was 3.0% in 2010 and 1.7% in 2011. What is worse is that in USA the Per capita income adjusted for inflation has been declining for about twenty years for people living below the median income level.

In Sri Lanka the balance 90% of university eligible students who are not enrolled into Universities, out of those who could afford to pay a lot of money end up doing foreign Accounting, Law, computer science degrees or even going abroad to get Medical degrees.

In USA 100% of students if they get through their high school are eligible to enter universities, provided their parents can afford to pay for the expensive education. 50% of those who pass out as doctors and engineers from Jaffna & the eastern universities with medical and engineering emigrate to earn high salaries abroad.
Sri Lankan’s in USA living below the median income level cannot afford medical school education for their children in USA. In USA, some Sri Lankan parents sell all their assets to provide university education for their children and the ungrateful children do not look after their parents in their old age.
