1st update:

The Tamil National Alliance took a very early lead in the race for the Northern Provincial Council when it clinched the races for postal votes in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts gaining on the ruling United Peoples’ Alliance by a margin of 1096.

In the Mullaitivu District, the TNA which is the main opposition party in the Northern Provincial battle obtained 646 votes to the ruling UPFA’s 146.

Mullaitivu is the former LTTE stronghold in the Wanni where the final battles of Sri Lanka’s separatist war was waged. The UN claims 40,000 people died in the final days of the battle along the Mullaitivu coast, an allegation staunchly denied by the Sri Lankan Government.

Northern Tamils went to the polls today to elect their provincial legislators for the first time in 25 years.

It is important we remember that the group that won this Northern Province elections has contested under the banner of ITAK, whose leaders has issued the infamous Waddukodai resolution on May 14th, 1976 that urged the Tamil youth to take up arms and insisted never to lay it down until Eelam is won. We should not forget that no former or current leader of ITAK ever retracted the vile statement that lead to all the terrorism by LTTE.

India is also waiting for another war so that they can bring in a cyprus style solution. That way by occupying the north east they get the trinco harbour and they can keep the chinese out of their backyard too.The sword of damocles will be hanging over the rajapakshes when india makes it clear to them that any more romancing with china will result in india moving in to the rest of the country from the northeast increasing the territory of the new indian state of eelam further into sinhalese areas.

“I need another war now, then we can kill more tamils”

You can have it as long as it not in my ancestral island.

Please go back to your homeland in India and kill more Tamils in Tamilnadu or in Bihar. When you go don’t forget to take your Tamil brethren from this island.

Will the President refer to this election during his address to the UN General Assembly?
What he will say/will not say will be an indicater of the government’s intentions.
I hope he will promise to ensure a democratic process after this election – all nations will be watching, including those of the commonwealth.
    The CHOGM is near.

Congratulations TNA. Justice Wigneswaran, this is a great opportunity for you to transform TNA from being a regional party to a National Party. You should first change the name from TNA, change the election manifesto to include which are general to all Sri Lankans and in addition include Sinhalese and Muslim candidates into your fold and contest in all electorates all over Sri Lanka. With your leadership you will show the Sri Lankan masses what a honest person can do. Please do not talk supporting LTTE or Prabaharan. LTTE and Prabaharan started as freedom fighters and turned into a terrorist organization when they started killing innocent civilians not only in Sri Lanka but also in other foreign countries. Show some true leadership Justice Wigneswaran.

I am pleased with the results of the election in the North. How people can refer to the Tamils and the TNA as terrorists today is beyond me. I am persuaded that the Tamil people were not treated well after independence in 1948. I am also persuaded that, out of desperation, they were wrongheaded in getting behind a Marxist like Prabhakara. However, the Tamil people and the TNA are taking a different approach today to address their grievances.

Sadly, people like M.A. Sumanthiran were not around in the 1970’s so that the Tamils could have someone decent to be a powerful voice for them without having to turn to Marxists and terrorism.

I think the election was quite a triumph for the Tamils, but also a triumph for Sri Lanka. Given the anti-democratic downward slope that Sri Lanka is on, it is now ironically Tamils like M.A. Sumanthiran who are the voices of democracy, freedom and unity. If the best and most qualified person were elected president of Sri Lanka, Sumanthiran would be its president and you can bet all Sri Lankans would have a better life under him regardless of their religion or ethnic background because he would restore Sri Lanka to its former greatness. I believe that a Sumanthiran presidency is coming….

Some southern friends seem to agitate over the resounding victory of TANA in the North.
AS for Douglas in Kayts- Humpty had a great fall.
The Tamils have given a clear message.
Thunder- mannar is beating the drum again.Advising the GOSL to turn around the development funds of the north back to the south. What funds?
The winning results was an answer to MR when he said – vote for me or you will not get any money for development.Nothing.
well- answer has been given.— go fly a kite. What development did you do in the North that WEARE ABOUT THAT WILL BE MISSED IN THE FUTURE.

Its about roads and racing cars. Its about highways and rushing off FROM NORTH TO SOUTH with valuable timber, sand, stolen goods gold etc
from the northern homes of the Tamils.

Simply- if the government did the development right – today there would have been a landslide victory for UPFA.
    The answer has been given.
CJ Wigneswaran has come out on top.!
All the insitigation and RILING from the south about the ‘vellalar’ caste system being drummed from the south went to waste. There was fear from the south that CJW a retired judge will be a man to reckon with. Now they have to hear whether they like it or not.

Lets see what the great MR will say in NY.

What I like most about this election is that it is top tier Tamils in public office now who are the greatest advocates for freedom, the rule of law, equality, democracy and unity. I hope they seize the opportunity and re-brand themselves as a national party under those principles. Sri Lanka is going authoritarian and its media is being censored. Ironically, it is high profile Tamils who are challenging this and are looking to restore Sri Lanka to its former greatness. Isn’t that quite a turn of events. If I led the TNA, I would keep the re-branding up and make it a national party going under the National Alliance. I don’t think this is the TNA of your parents. It is a New TNA and it looks and feels different….

Check out the speeches of M.A. Sumanthiran. You will find him advocating for the freedom of the press and the safety of journalists. You will also find him advocating for the preservation of the Judiciary. He has also received accolades from the Muslim community for highlighting attacks on Muslims. He is a strong advocate for the rule of law applied equally to all. I don’t see him out there seeking an independent state. Instead, he is trying to unify ALL Sri Lankans behind the basic principles that should be at the heart of any democracy if it were not going down the authoritarian downward slide the family cult is taking Sri Lanka to. Rajapaksa served his purpose. His time is over now. Sumanthiran is the future of a restored democratic and united Sri Lanka…. Really!

If minorities can govern nations when the majority in SL has failed in governing the last 65 years except creating a fascist regime then why not a national party? Honest and intelligent rulers are any day better than military rule by mutts. They should make a religious or racial slur a criminal offence like the protection offered to the Jewish folk of the west then in small nation equality takes a footing.
Think that’s how we grew up before the father handed the reins to son that spawned at any cost ambitious SWRD and the saffron robes.

Sad, sad, sad, though overwhelmingly expected and TNA was overwhelmingly voted in, it is still a sad outcome. This win for TNA will strengthen them to go to the next level – to agitate for a separate state.

I said this before and I say it again that TNA has run on the sympathies of those who still harbour raw wounds from the 40 year old war and the still quietly active separationists. Like I said before TNA may deliver to the Tamil people the separate state that LTTE failed to do. And when that finally occurs there will be visa issues, restrictions on business ventures, border disputes, skirmishes, more warfare, more destruction and the bloodletting party will re-establish.

Therefore the outcome has dire consequences to the Tamil people, the broader Sri Lankan people and also the world outside with continuous refugee flows to the much favoured countries such as Australia, England, Scandinavia and even far flung Canada.

I suggest that the armaments suppliers and brokers start setting up business in Colombo again. Secondly I suggest the world media who thrive on reporting carnage to start slowly making their way to Sri Lanka, or even set up permanent bases to report from. Sooner or later the fireworks will be reignited.

    Sad indeed.

        Probono Publico,

I may be a poor loser now. I fervently hope and pray all the winners today including you will not one day be losers as well. If judgement is based on recent politics in Sri Lanka that seems to be the only outcome possible.

I disagree, right now you have prominent Tamils like M.A. Sumanthiran who have attracted wide support from diverse people of all faiths and backgrounds. Why is this? It is because he is not talking about a separate state. On the contrary, he is talking about the rule of law and democracy. He speaks of unity and he is one day soon going to unify the whole nation. You just wait and see!

You are right- the SOUTHERNERS made money on armmament etc etc at the expense of the lives of Tamils.
    Remembering the massacre at Mulliyasvaikal.
Why are the southerners so worried that the Tamils will take it to the next level?
    Seperate State.
Well then, work on your government that ALL CITIZENS OF SRI lANKA be treated equally. We have a democracy don’t we?

The Tamils have given a crystal Clear verdict in a democratic manner. They are not for a separate country anymore but want to live peacefully (not under military control) in their homeland with dignity. The TNA says it is willing to work with the government.

This is the best chance for the country to establish peace if the TNA and the government work together but it all depends on the Rajapakshe brothers (the most powerful among them is Gota).

The problem is, will the Rajapakshe brothers accept the verdict of the Tamils and work with the TNA or will they listen to the Racist Sinhala-Buddhist Nationalists and cause unnecessary problems and create a mess.

The US, UN, India and the International community should monitor the situation and make sure that the Rajapakshe brothers (specially the most powerful Gota) will not cause any more trouble and create another crisis.

    • 0
      0

As you said, it all depends on how the Rajapakshe brothers act. Either they can take the path of the Sinhala-Buddhist racist Nationalists and push the TNA towards the Tamil Diaspora, Tamil Nadu, TGTE, GTF, BTF, and International community or they can take a moderate path and work along with the TNA.

If the Rajapakshe government is clever enough to silence the Tamil Diaspora, Tamil Nadu, TGTE, GTF, BTF, and so on and make them non-relevant, they should work with the TNA and help them. If the TNA can solve the Tamil issues by working with the government, they do not need any support or interference from Tamil Diaspora, Tamil Nadu, TGTE, GTF, BTF, and so on.

    TNA victory gave following messages;

1.Tamils reject the Government’s programme in North
2.Tamil’s wanted dignity rather than so called development.
    3.They reject military rule
    4.They need justice restored
5.Tamil’s cannot be mislead as Sinhalese by MARA’s family regime
6.They don’t endorse corrupted so called “development” work in north by Basil and his henchmen
7.They want punishment to culprits who committed war crimes.
8.They want power sharing and self rule.
9.They need equal status with Sinhalese

    What the TNA could do with the majority votes;

1.Get rid of military rule and demand for a impartial civil oriented Governor
2.Establish a provincial police force to assist proper implementation of civil administration and maintain law and order.
3.Demand of withdrawal of all newly established military camps during and after the last phase of war.
    4. Start dialogue with the central for a proper power sharing mechanism which ensures more autonomy for all provinces including North and east.
5.Invite ruling and opposition members of other provincial councils to educate and mobilize support for the total implementation of 13th amendment
6.Undertake all development work in North.
7 Demand for total withdrawal of HSZ and allow people to resettle.
8.Stop all state sponsored colonizations by getting a courts order and by mobilizing civilians against MARA’s policy
9.Declare a national day to remember all Tamils killed during the war especially at the last phase of war.
    10. Tel people that they should not hold any hope the the MARA’s regime will support the Northern Provincial council and continue it’s so called “Uthuru Vasanthaya” programme as they have already got their commissions.
    11. Raise direct funds for development work locally and internationally.
    12. Close all brothel houses that are run in north with the patronage of the military rulers.
    13. Start immediate livelihood programmes for war widows.

    @ CT

Having a healthy discussion with diverse opinion is excellent (with people with different views like Dayan,Malinda,Rajiva,or even Hela)
but people inciting hatred in CT website is not good for CT or the countries future and it would be good to disallow posts by people who incite hatred openly,i dont need to mention names but dont allows CT to become trash like Lankaweb

I fully agree. Never mind racism but allowing posts that degrades motherhood is diabolical and not in good taste.

I did post a mesage to CT not to post comments insulting widows, whether Tamil widows or Sinhala widows.

There were some degrading comments about Sinhal Widows have a pension and Tamil widows dont have a pesnion and are earning a living from prostitution etc specially from one specific person who went on to make vulgar statements about Tamil children specially Girls

It is an insult to CT to entertain such posts that degrades motherhoods, encourage racism etc

Thank you Peace Lover-I would tend to agree with you.We do not want to degenerate ourselves to the lower levels of LW
I would include Patriot (aka Leelawardne) we may not agree with his views but its a healthy debate.
