Senior DIG Pujith Jayasundara was nominated by the Constitutional Council as the 34th Inspector General of Police (IGP), sources said.
The decision was taken after the Council interviewed three DIGs, including Jayasundara, Chandana Wickramaratne and acting IGP S. M. Wickremesinghe for the position.
Sources said that a majority of the ten members of the Constitutional Council had voted for Jayasundara.
Despite objections, including a letter from the joint opposition calling for Champika Ranawaka to sit out of today’s meeting due to a conflict of interest issue, Minister Ranawaka was present at the meeting and took part in the voting, highly placed sources told the Colombo Telegraph.

Saibu Jayathilaka / April 19, 2016
Hey guys, if we would have a IGP of all honest kind to go ridically against all the crime doers
if we would have a minister for law and order to do the job properly
if we would have school teachers to do the job properly
if we have at least few ministers to do the job as Germans and the japanese behave…
no doubt, the people once gulliable to talks of Rajaakshe the Rascals turn their mind sets to good and civlized within a shorter period of time.
I dont think eradicate drug trafficking in the country is a mammooth work if we have a good police service that are sensible and uncorrupted.
I suggest minister of law and order to change the uniform of the police giving them a back borne… paradidgm shift is imperative in many areas. then only this nation would see it finally right.

Paddy,
I am inclined to guard my celebrations a bit.
I do not know much about this IGP nominee Pujitha J’s track record. However, I notice he has a lot going for him. At least in terms of public support. For some reason.
I earnestly hope the elation of the public is justified.
However, proof of the pudding will be in the eating.
Cheers!
PS:
Will this much trumpeted Pujitha J end torture, merciless beatings & extra judicial killings that happen in Police custody in SL?
/
Paddy / April 20, 2016
Ben, I am just happy the other two didn’t make it… especially that Wickremasinghe guy. As you say “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”. So let’s start eating.

Congratulations to you, Mr. Jayasundara. Sri Lankans expect you as a very good Policeman,Protecting Our Lives In Case of Emergency that are normally created by the so called politicians and their cronies. We Wish that you and your staff will provide unbiased services to all exhibiting very high degree of professionalism in discharging their responsibilities.

Sam Silva / April 18, 2016
Best Choice. Very honorable and Honest officer. All Good wishes
/
Raritythougts / April 18, 2016
Congrats:) With all respect to your records,Please Sir give it total different face so that we can finally see a country and nation with a low rate of high crimes.
Never give a chance any one dealing with drugs. Former MP Duminda De Silva – Rajapkshes close confidiantes but handled all kind of drug deals – with police IGP being slept round the clock. Please you react awakening the nation, then we can achieve a lot in srilanka. Thank you for your start sir.
/
MsThalanabatu / April 18, 2016
If atleast one of the high officers in police would react exemplary, all others will follow him up… then it is already started the process.
This should go with state offices too.
This should go with schools too.
This should start at any other authorities too.
Then we can achieve the final goal shaping up the nation educating them to a displined and civilized naton.
Rigorous law and order enforcement is the need of hour.
Be it first second or third citizen, or the other people, the law and order should be equal.
I wish you all the best.

Good that the government’s preemptive strike of an acting appointment has not tied the hands of the Council. Great.
/
Daham / April 19, 2016
It is not the government’s preemptive strike of an acting appointment, it is the President’s.
/
Gune / April 18, 2016
Frankly I have little knowledge of the candidates. Going by the social commentry a majority were rooting for one Pujitha. Wickremasinghe seemed to have a lot of skeletons in his cupboard including Thajudeens’s. He should know that taking shortcuts to the top by bypassing the law and supporting MR and his clan is only temporary. The rejection of his candidacy as IGP is a reflection of people wanting the law implemented. I hope Pujitha Jayasundere will not bow down to politicians and he will always uphold the law. I also hope that he will stop all bribe taking particularly the traffic police who catch innocent car drivers for petty faults and permit major offenders like private buses off the hook who drive like maniacs. Here’s wishing Pujitha to be fearless in his duty and reform the police force and set an example for integrity. Let’s hope he serves the people and not politicians.
/
paul / April 18, 2016
So, everybody is praising him and hoping that he will act with impartiality and justice? Just wait until he arrests some one of influence. The politicians will threaten him. He will be helpless. All the good intentions will crumble in the face of pressure against him or his family. It has happened ten thousand times before. It is happening to someone as you read this. It will happen again.
/
Dilip / April 18, 2016
Country is going to get honourable and honest IGP at last. Hope
He will be given the freedom to carry out his duties
All the very best Mr jayasundara

Congratulations! Yes, great and good officer. We are certain that you would protect the law and order, and serve the
people and the country well.
/
gamini / April 18, 2016
Is Pujith Jayasundara a relative of PB Jayasundara? Samantha Jayasundara another cousin of PB Jayasundara, at the UDA, appointed during MR’s time is still functioning and is not without blemish. All these buggers are the same.
/
Saibu Jayathilaka / April 19, 2016
Why so negative ?
Even if all Rajaakshes are mafios – Chamal Rajaakshe is a civilized/sensible person:
Likewise, I dont think even if Jayasundaras belong to that family, Pujith could behave like PB.
/
Daham / April 19, 2016
Chamal Rajaakshe is a civilized/sensible person? Hmmmn

/

Congratulations to Pujitha. Now please keep to your words and do everything correctly to get the public to love the police. Take immediate action to arrest the murderers, thieves, rapists, drug suppliers and all wrongdoers of the last regime and this regime. Action also must be taken to increase the salaries of the police force to stop corruption in the police.
/
senthil / April 19, 2016
There was a talk about Police gained few brownie points on the last election day. So it is vital to give enough powers to police and clip the feathers from the army and MR & co. Stitch in time saves nine – we cannot afford to make certain type of mistakes because they are fatal. Do it today without leaving it to tomorrow because tomorrow is not certain.
/
Govi Raja Wicks / April 19, 2016
Pujitha by all accounts seems the best of the lot., if one were to conveniently forget the forced kneeling episode when he was DIG Eastern Range. He has a touch of arrogance which he would do well to contain. He would also do well to remember that an IGP is only as good as the last case of abuse of power by his fellow cops he was able to to prevent.
Good luck top cop!

Lanka Watch / April 19, 2016
Congratulations Mr. Pujitha on your appointment as 34th IGP of Sri Lanka and may you have God’s blessings to carry out your duties with
-out fear or favour. There is a saying that new broom sweeps well but we, the people wish that you carry out your duties efficiently, in unbiased manner until your retirement. One advice from an ordinary layman is for you to keep the politicians at arms length.

BBS Rep / April 19, 2016
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Let us wait and see and not get too excited about Pujith Jayasundara.
Remember how much celebrations we engaged in when My3 was elected. The man has proved to be an utter failure as a president.
Pujith, we are watching you. If you make a difference compared to the usual bootlicking of politicians or sleep walking like the former IGP well and good.
/

And Ranawaka proves his credentials as an unprincipled (as if we didn’t know that already!) character by ignoring his fellow members on the CC and sitting in on the panel, in spite of his obvious conflict of interest.
With characters like this representing us, what hope do we have of that elusive ‘Yahapalanaya’?
Meanwhile, ‘back on the ranch’, congrats to Pujitha and here’s hoping we have a discernible change in our law-enforcement standards.

please let me warn you sir;

can anyone shed some light on PJ’s resume ? how had he handled the undue pressure from Gota the goon? was he just another Anura Senanayake type stooge ? where was he during the Aluthgama/Beruwala chaos ? how had he handled street protests(opposition ) , uni students , Trade unionists etc ?

Dear Sirimal ,
Hope you have celebrated our traditional new year ! back in SL ,things are getting back to normalcy after a lengthy holiday .
with regards to PJ , i don’t know much about him either, except few dramas . he has been accused of degrading the police uniform by ordering to kneel down an entire police station , maybe some of comment-ors could provide us some valuable insight information about him .
take care sirimal.

Evidently all the powerful police men failed to do the due – looking at the manner Rathupaswala people that went protesting asking the cheapest food stuff (drinking water) were then bullted by mediation army.. remember ? Like cats and dogs, youth were attacked by injuring dozens.
/
Srilal / April 19, 2016
You are right , no body dare to forget/forgive Rathpussalawa debacle except the current Yahapalana government . people are getting extremely agitated and annoyed of the manner in which MY3/RW handling the situation.we had been promised that all the wrong dores will be punished after a swift investigation ;still, no justice been served . justice delayed is justice denied.

Yes you both are right, those victims deserved to get such compensation.
Instead, Rajathuma would have gone an another honeymoon being burden to Srilanken airlines. Here, I really really appreciate the way current president never forget to treat those victims accordingly.

Can you add your thoughts – may be you know more please.

What a LET DOWN by the “Civil Society” members of the Constitutional Council? Out of the three members, only one, the Chairman, attended the meeting, while the other two kept away. Is this what the people expected when these members were appointed to this newly formed “Constitutional Council”. Both absentees are highly educated and eminent personalities in the social strata of the country. If this the way such people discharge their entrusted responsibilities, what more can we expect from other lower rung who handle Governmental affairs.?
Next interesting thing (as reported) in the “secret” voting that took place was the “ONE” vote that was “spoiled”. Whose vote was that? Is that member FIT to be in this Constitutional Council? What a set of CLOWNS we have put in place to handle our affairs and what FUTURE do we expect?

Christo pieres / April 19, 2016
The entire process to elect the IGP has been a hilarious joke. Ranil n Mathri you both continue to fool the people. So please bear in mind what happened to the Rajapaksa’s. The same will happen to you sooner not later. Let me explain why…..
The establishment of independent councils to make appointments of key personnel to important positions in the public sector was a good move. That’s where it ends. A independent council needs to be empowered to make independent appointments in the best interest of the people and the country. In short the council first needs to Shortlist the most eligible and suitable candidates for this position, period. Then they need to interview and then make deliberations to appoint the best candidate out of the lot.
What happened in this case was the President nominated three Names and requested the council to select one candidate. The responsibility of choosing the three candidates was that of the council. So in the very first place this was circumvented by a politician of the highest rank for very obvious reasons. This is was wrong.
Next one member of the council was under investigation by the police for a hit and run incident. Morally he should have decided to step down from this council. But as wcde know none of the politicians have any morals or understand what it means. Ranil perhaps knows but he too has compromised his morals and values as he host did not care or did not have the political will to request this member to step down. So as a nation we can just imagine what the future of SL will be like. This also is wrong
Sadly two of the eminent public representatives did not bother to attend this very important meeting. Irrespective of what the reasons are they should be kicked out immediately and brought to shame publicly for letting down the people.
This was also wrong
At the voting it was found that one vote was spoilt. If these are educated and prominent members of society and they cannot figure out how to fill out a simple voting card, then this individual has no place in this council and at the expense of the state, just to name and shame him he should be sent back school, perhaps to nursery to learn how to fill out this form.
This was also wrong
So looking at all what is wrong, it’s very clear the outcome of this decision was already made and manipulated by parties outside of this council. As the saying goes you can fool some of the people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time… Good bye ‘good governance’ you are no better than the previous bunch. We look forward to a change soon
Ps -perhaps someone can file a petition in court against this appointment as it is constitutionally and morally wrong and in violation of the principles of having independent commissions or council to make these appointments without due influence or coerce from politicians which is detrimental to the general public
