2014: A Crucial Year For Accountability In Lanka Says UK Labour Party

UK’s Labour Party claims 2014 could be a crucial year for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka given the growing calls for an independent international war crimes inquiry.

Speaking after a meeting with representatives from Tamil lobby groups, Labour Parliamentarian and The shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander said British Prime Minister David Cameron had left Colombo with no improvements in Human Rights secured.

Meeting attendees: Varadar Varadakumar - Tamil Information Centre, Suren Surendiran – Global Tamil Forum , Sen Kandiah - Tamils for Labour , Janani Jananayakam – Tamils Against Genocide, Raj Vakesan - British Tamils Forum, Dr Rajah – Chairman of Hindu Temples, Nathan Kumar – Tamils for Labour, Krish Ratnasingham – Tamil National Alliance UK , Sutharshan Sukumaran – Tamil Youth, Francis Mariyathas – Tamils for Labour

Meeting attendees: Varadar Varadakumar – Tamil Information Centre, Suren Surendiran – Global Tamil Forum , Sen Kandiah – Tamils for Labour , Janani Jananayakam – Tamils Against Genocide, Raj Vakesan – British Tamils Forum, Dr Rajah – Chairman of Hindu Temples, Nathan Kumar – Tamils for Labour, Krish Ratnasingham – Tamil National Alliance UK , Sutharshan Sukumaran – Tamil Youth, Francis Mariyathas – Tamils for Labour

“Along with the Tamil community here in the UK, Labour will not let the matter rest,” Alexander said.

“Labour is today urging the Prime Minister to immediately join our call for an international led inquiry into human rights and cut short the deadline of March 2014 that he has granted to President Rajapaksa,” he added.

Alexander said it had been a useful and productive meeting with Tamil community leaders. “Our discussions allowed me to thank them for all they have done to raise the issue of human rights in Sri Lanka here in the UK. They made clear their commitment to work together on this important issue in the months and years ahead,” the Labour MP said.

“2013 has been a significant year for Sri Lanka and the Tamil people. But 2014 could be a crucial year for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka, given the growing calls for an independent, international war crimes inquiry to be established,” he added.

“Working with the Tamil community here in the UK, Labour will continue to highlight these issues and urge action from the Government of Sri Lanka.

“Sadly David Cameron left Colombo with no improvements in Human Rights secured, and along with the Tamil community here in the UK, Labour will not let the matter rest.

Labour is today urging the Prime Minister to immediately join our call for an international led inquiry into human rights and cut short the deadline of March 2014 that he has granted to President Rajapaksa.

Representatives of the Tamil Information Centre, the Global Tamil Forum, Tamil for Labour, Tamils Against Genocide, British Tamils Forum, Tamils for Labour, Tamil National alliance UK and Tamil Youth attended the meeting.

Leave Sri Lanka matters to Sri Lanka.
Look towards former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair and make him accountable for how he acted as a poodle to the USA and caused destruction to life & property
Why was not HR matters raised in China when Cameron went with a begging bowl for business to China?

I interesting comment. May be UK Labour Party should revisit the history of Sri Lanka, to see the contribution of the British to this bloody mess, where the Sinhala Buddhists Racists are going after the Tamil Racists.

By the way any news from Iraq on WMD, your leader Blair claimed in 2003

Accountability a must and systematic and institutionalized DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TAMILS within the government and public sector must be addressed. 60 percent of Colombo is Tamil-speaking why are there no Tamils from Colombo District in Parliament? It is because racism and discrimination against Tamils, particularly in the public sector is so entrenched and deep in the fabric of Colombo society that it is invisible..

The Rajapakse regime’s policy of attacking and disappearing Tamils during the war has its pre and post-war parallel in SYSTEMATIC DISCRIMINATION against TAMILS in the PUBLIC and GOVERNMENT SECTOR – particularly, politics, administration and education sectors. The Sinhala Only policy works BY OTHER MEANS in the public sector today. The Sri Lanka Higher Education sector and Universities in Colombo and the South are notorious for discrimination against highly qualified Tamils entering the system. While intellectual freedom itself is in short supply, qualified Tamils are DOUBLY VICTIMIZED, discriminated against and scapegoated due to the ENDEMIC RACISM and ENVY and JEALOUSLY of English speaking minorities. Qualified Tamils who apply for jobs at all levels, but particularly senior posts in Administration and academic Lecturerer and Professor positions in the universities of Sri Lanka are systematically discriminated against. As a result there are very few Tamils in administrative and academic posts and there is a brain drain of the Tamil minority from Sri Lanka.

Leaving Sri Lanka matters to Sri Lanka is to allow GOSL to get away with their war crimes because GOSL will NEVER hold the guilty accountable.

The moron Sajith Premadasa has told a news conference that all political parties in the country need to form a process to face and defeat any resolution against the country at the UNHRC..

Sajith as usual has got things upside down and inside out!
      1. UNHRC resolution is NOT against the people of Lanka, but against the corrupt and criminal Rajapakse regime. 2. A UNHRC resolution against the Rajapassa military dictatorship is essential to prevent Gota the Goon further destroying democratic institutions and the JUDICIARY which is headed by an ILLEGAL and criminal de facto Chief Justice today. 3. Sajith Premadasa lied about getting a degree from the London School of Economics and is intellectually and morally unfit to lead any party, and is covertly supporting the Rajapakse regime.

      • 0
        2

It means Sajith has a thing called a brain to realize that Sri Lankans would not ever vote a party that is standing with the eelamists and their supporters into power.

UNHRC is against Sri Lankans bc the aim is to reverse the war victory we achieved and destabilize the country again.

Sri Lankans who don’t like the corrupt Rajapakshes can go and vote the opposition in elections that we have in abundance. We don’t need the so called international community to chase away the Rajapakshes that was advising us that LTTE cannot be defeated so to accommodate their unjust demands.

DON, YOU ARE VERY CORRECT. THE INDEPENDENT INTERNATIONAL INQUIRY IS NOT AGAINST SRI LANKAN CITIZENS BUT AGAINST INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY COMMITTED CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY AND NO ONE ELSE. GOVT AND THE STATE MEDIA ARE INSTIGATING AND MISLEADING THE PEOPLE AS THIS BEING A LTTE (RUMP) AND WEST CONSPIRACY AGAINST ALL OF US; THIS IS NOT.

WHY CANNOT THE UNP, JVP, TNA, FONSEKA, EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THIS? THE SANGA HAVE NO CLUE (VASI PATHTHATA HOIYA),BBS THUGS IN ROBES, SLMC ARE BUNCH OF CLOWNS WITH THE BIGGEST BETRAYER OF ONES OWN PEOPLE AS THEIR CHIEF (CARNIVAL ICE CREAM MAN HAKEEM), CWC WORKING TO THONDAMAN’S PERSONAL AGENDA AND ROBBING THE PARTY AND COUNTRY AND TAKING THE MONEY TO INDIA.

Blair, Bush and the rest including Alexander are directly responsible for the deaths of 1.4 million Iraqis, from the illegal invasion/occupation (according to the UNSG), the supreme crime according to the Nuremberg judges carried out by them on the strength of lies. They have YET to answer for their crimes.
      ———- ————– ————- ————- —
Pointing fingers at Sri Lanka is one way to distract the public, without admitting that the Sri Lankan forces carried out a legitimate action to protect the integrity of the national borders, and to PROTECT the most fundamental of Rights, the RIGHT to LIFE of it’s nationals, held as hostages and a human shield by the Tamil terrorists. ‘Tamils against Genocide’ must by implication mean that they are ONLY pro-Ethnic Cleansing as carried out by their betters, the LTTE terrorists, from the Northern and the Eastern Province of both the Sinhela and the Muslims.
      ————- ———- —————- —————— –
The LTTE terrorist rump may attempt to cloack itself in various guises, BUT they cannot hide. The Rump is today in good company with the promoters, facilitators, financiers and the arms suppliers of modern terrorism in Libya, Iraq, Syria etc in the West.

“RIGHT to LIFE” bravo you have picked this phrase from the King! In Sri Lanka people should be grateful for being alive and should not be bothered about their rights; is this what you are saying? In Iraq, the Muslims are killing the Muslims in case you had not noticed. If you are really against injustices, you should be consistent! You cannot accuse the West for Iraqi invasion and at at the same time trying to defend the MR regime form blatant war crimes!

what war crimes? And did Mahinda invade a different country thousands miles away and killed close to 400,000 people. And the violence still continuing?
Did Mahinda use depleted uranium which made iraqi children born with disabilities?

No one or any government has any ‘legitimate right’ to starve 460,000 people but claiming to be just ‘70,000’ and urge them to seek refuge against heavy artillery into a so called ‘safe zone’ and bomb them. US and UK did illegal invasion and killed many civilians, pointing finger at them do0es not legalise the killing of our innocent civilians. Sri Lanka does not even allow Dalai Lama to visit Buddhist Sri Lanka in order to appease China. There is another reason why US and UK want a peaceful settlement in Sri Lanka after finishing off LTTE because they preached LTTE, PLO, Palestinians, Kurdish fighters that violence should not be used against any state. That is why they proscribed them, imprisoned their supporters in their countries and gave aerial intelligence to Sri Lanka to bomb LTTE ships carrying arms(Gotabaya also admitted this). Now Rajapakse brothers went on their promise to India and IC and disregard even the lame duck 13A. What will these super powers say to the freedom fighters if they take up arms next time? Now US, UK and India fuse least damaging tactics to persuade Sri Lanka to resolve the ethnic problem. If US wants they can use harsher methods or even use ‘illegal killings’ as in Iraq, Libya or Iran.

It has passed long way from Sri Lanka matters to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka matters are not limited to Sinhalese of Sri Lanka. It is a war between two nations and it happened under international participation. International community was involved during the war and peace talks. You took help from International community in this war, so you have obliged to participate to bring peace and harmony between two nations. Otherwise, international community has an obligation to liberate the nation occupied by Sinhala rulers illegally.

Former PM Labour Tony Blair proscribed LTTE in UK and persuaded EU to do the same. Defeat of the LTTE enabled the Sri Lankan government go back on its promises of devolution and resolution of the conflict. So the Labour Party either do the same to this government that is sever diplomatic relations or ensure upholding UN charter on human rights and crimes against humanity in one of its member countries.

In earlier eras, Labour and Conservative sank their differences and came together in the event of a war. Now at a time of peace, there is a call for unity. The crucial compulsion for accountability, justice and reconciliation has become so overweening.

Both Labour and Conservatives are jointly in agreement that Accountability should be the basis for reconciliation. You should also think that truth should prevail for communities to reconcile and moreover, self examination will help to restore Good Governance!

Brits better show their “accounts of killing” in Belfast, Iraq and Afghanistan first. Then they can bark at Sri Lanka. British/USA invasion of Iraq created more than 500,000 widows.

Cooli boys of Brits really feed LTTE propaganda to British politicians but they cannot prove their claims.

The “coolie boys” amount to about 100,000 among a total UK population of 63,705,000 (July 1 2013).

“Brits better show their “accounts of killing” in Belfast, Iraq and Afghanistan first.” (MS)

        Dear Mr. Justice,

Coolie boys are not clever. Brits, having realized that coolie boys like shit, use them to cover up the foul smelling Brit shit in Belfast, Iraq and Afghanistan promising them more scavenging jobs in Sri Lanka. In UK only cricket is said to be a gentlemen’s game now not politics. Brits do not consider coolie boys as gentlemen because LTTE, their employment agency, is blacklisted and proscribed in UK. Coolie boys have no brains either because they are exposing themselves to MI of UK by participating in public discussions with British policy makers. Very soon they will realize that they were f**d Right Royally by the Brits.

This is the standard deflection technique of Sinhala Nationalists, to bring up crimes by others in a bid to absolve GOSL–Listen, If I commit a crime I can’t bitch to the police that some people have gotten away with crimes so I should too.– Maybee the Sri Lankan commoners can commit murder and theft and demand they not be held accountable because Rajapaksa Regime gets away with all manner of crime.

We can’t allow our country to be destabilized again for some corrupt western political games. So yes if UK/USA ask for an international probe against us Sri Lankans there should be international probes against the Iraq invasion.

If you hateful scumbags think that only Sinhalese, Muslims and Burghers will be effected when the country is destabilized you are so wrong.

Since Sri lanka only defeated the LTTE with Western support, Sri Lanka has no grounds for criticism when these same Western powers decide to hold Sri Lanka accountable. –You think the West should only help you but never question you, this is such arrogance on the part of GOSL and those Lankans who think this way.

So killing of innocents happened in Belfast, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Sri Lanka but US and Britain must show accountability first. In Belfast the commission with the consent of all sides investigated and found the killing of “unarmed civilians” was unjustified. They went further and set up Reconciliation Commission under Nelson Mandela to investigate. It declaring the killings as “unjustified and unjustifiable”, the PM Mr David Cameron apologised though he was not the PM at the time of the killings. Will it ever happen in Sri Lanka? Will the president apologise for killing civilians? In Northern Ireland they negotiated a peace agreement (Good Friday Agreement) and it endorsed by a local referendum and power devolved to Irish people of N.Ireland. Will that happen in Sri Lanka? The British military is withdrawn and do not have camps for Briish Soldiers in NI. The police force are recruited proportionate to the Catholic and Protestant population. No attempt should ever be made to compare civilised people with barbarians.

Douglas Alexander, the Labour Party Foreign Affairs spokesman voted AGAINST an inquiry into Labour’s involvement in the illegal invasion of Iraq and all the subsequent deaths, but is FOR an inquiry into Sri Lanka’s defeat of the Tamil Tigers.

the british parliament and its members of the past thirty years are the ones who should be held responsible for creating the monsters today of terrorism and the scum elements who are leading this country to destruction.
over the years blind support for the tamil terror diaspora, fiancial and moral support has given root to two corrupt element which has grown to cancerous proportions. only the god almighty can cure this, by his own grace or destructive force.
