2022 – An Year We Must Never Forget: Lingering Memories Of Spirited Months

By Vishwamithra

“What will your last words be?” ~ Karl Marx’s famous last words

In 2022, January 1st dawned as just another day in Sri Lanka. It was a Saturday; gloom of the skies signalled of things to come. Crowded cities aside, the rural environs were pregnant with rainy clouds waiting to unleash their anger and grief with unappeasable tears. While the weeping clouds may have wet the parched soil in the arid zones, the same would not be eagerly cheered on by the inhabitants in the hill country, for such hard rain clearly indicated landslides and clogged waterways blocking the regular radiant of the earth’s slope. That eager wait is no longer a wait; the calendar has already forgotten the days of January, February and March of 2022. Less than two weeks are left for the story of the year 2022 to be told.

In the quiet, rustic belt of the country, a singing breeze is caressing the landscape to a lull and tending to put an apathetic generation to sleep, sleep that arrives quickly for a weary traveler. To turn back and labor to be introspective, one needs the discipline and training of the mind both of which come after a dedicated yet at least a rudimentary education. Rarely does it come to an uneducated and unsophisticated mind, yet it may still embrace a formally uneducated but intrinsically keen and alert one whose life-goals have been set from a very tender age, shaped and defined by the sophistication of sheer will and the character and spirit of the circumstances.

Those who believe in the nonsensical superstitions of fate, destiny and previous-birth karma have virtually given up on the niceties and inevitability of true living. True living entails all shades and nuances of mind and matter- breathing, birth, death, sickness, growing old, wealth, poverty, love, hate, quarrels, war, tears and joy and the whole enterprise of life and living. One has to deal with all the drama of life when one comes of age, whether man, woman or child. But he must remember that all these elements, banal or extraordinary, of life and living are man-made and there is no argument or debate about it. Those who relegate it to unseen gods and other inscrutabilities have mortgaged their lives to others for they are too weak to carry the vast and heavy burden of life by themselves.

When poverty or injustice or lawlessness confronts him, man has to fight it without hesitancy, without procrastination and without mercy. No god, no messiah or no sage would come to his rescue unless he is prepared to face it head on, that is the unfinished and unending story of mankind. As Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

Now we come to the real question: Are we ready to change ourselves if we really want to change what is around us? That change may well be your family environment, your community, your ethnic group, your Temple, your Church or Kovil or Mosque or it may even be your government, your governance system or your leaders.

Yet we must remember that if we can’t change the course of the wind, we have to change the course of our boat, if we still need to keep sailing.

Sri Lanka, our Motherland has reached that impasse today. Everyone is searching high and dry for a way out; man has started a fresh sailing, not a voyage, but a sailing because the voyage was started, at least the current lap of it, soon after obtaining Independence from the British colonial powers. Handing over the country to the upper-class Pukka Sahibs of the twentieth century was considered Independence. Leaving the underprivileged, poverty-stricken and under-educated behind, these Pukka Sahibs began their own joyful ride, from the Senanayakes to the Kotelawalas. Then came SWRD Bandaranaike, not that he loved his countrymen less but he loved his ego and ambition more. In order to win votes amongst the Sinhalese Buddhists and the so-called downtrodden, he unleashed the Buddhist Monks with a beguiling political message but an empty desire to fulfil the pledge hidden behind the message. The followers voted and went back to their measly dwellings in the far and out countryside while the leaders came from measly beginnings to arrive at the voluptuous top. The nation’s fate was once again sealed within the Colombo residences and the walls of Parliament, the so-called Temple of Democracy. No words could describe the degradation and adulteration of people’s power.

Somewhere in the late sixties, Rohana Wijeweera articulated this alternate power-holding dynamic, from the Senanayakes to the Bandaranaikes, in the most apt and powerful fashion. But Wijeweera’s efforts, firstly in 1971 and later in 1987, too were way to shortsighted and egocentric. Power, when it gets ahold of those who are corrupt and avaricious, is more corrupting than the seeker or holder of such power. That is the internal impulse of power.

It is against such a forgettable backdrop that the year 2022 dawned. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the political hero of the 21st century, was ousted by Maithripala Sirisena, not because there was any political capital and resultant worth ascribed to Sirisena but because the Rajapaksa-led government was so unpopular and corrupt to the teeth and toes. From the time Sirisena-Ranil combo took over the reins, instead of righting the wrongs and diluting the state machinery so saturated with corruption and inefficiency, the people realized that there is no difference between these two forces, the UNP-led power center and the SLFP-led power center.

A new group of cheats took advantage of the stagnating governance and economic structures and projected a guy called Gotabaya, Mahinda’s younger brother. The group called itself the ‘Viyathmaga’ (Learned Group). The usual suspects supported them and Gotabaya had an easy passage to the throne. Gotabaya taught his elder brother Mahinda how to corrupt a nation in such a short time. But during his tenure, until he ran away from power, thanks solely to the people’s power shown via the Aragalaya, the corruption-ailment took so deep a root in our society, it had gone underground so that no seeing person could identify it until it hit the main trunk and branches of the marketplace-tree with such venom and ferocity, lines for petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas began to crowd the streets; inflation gripped the consumers so hard, overnight, the scarcities and prices of available items skyrocketed to unbelievable heights.

That was this year in the months of February, March and April. The memories that are dancing in our sleep are most regrettable. In the meantime those remembrances that pertain to the early days after our Independence are mostly forgotten; those who could remember are not among the living; even personalities such as Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali and Chandrika Kumaratunga are fading away to distant environs. That is why it is of paramount significance to chronicle some events and functions that did take place during this passing year, 2022.

The year 2022 is one of the most eventful and politically vibrant years. What was packed into the months of March to the present day should not be allowed to depart from us any soon. What was most promising at the beginning of the Aragalaya has fizzled out abruptly. The departure of one scoundrel, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has resulted in the sudden arrival of another persona non grata, Ranil Wickremasinghe. The tears of joy at the parting with Gotabaya have turned into a grieving howl with the advent of Ranil Wickremesinghe. A memory on the one side is sheer joy and the other, utter grief. That is the scourge of these last two weeks of December, parting passages of 2022.

A promising coming-together of all ethnic groups at the height of the Aragalaya are being torn apart again; both in the main media outlets and the social media, flames are being fanned and a hungry people are being fed with the same fear of minorities portrayed as Gullivers waiting to swallow the Sinhalese Buddhist Lilliputians. The leaders of the Aragalaya have been jailed; their voices silenced and action thwarted. Action of great magnitude and even greater character is being depicted as traitorous and unpatriotic. When those who wield power tell a story through their own media, what can the spectators do? Is political power running through the barrel-fulls of money and muscle?

The sweet memories of the Aragalaya and their fragrance should not be allowed to evaporate into thin air. Those memories may fade into blurred mist one day but that day should not be tomorrow or the day after. The not-so-sweet and bitter memories might linger on as they always do; yet it is incumbent on all of us who were dreaming about a better world with deeper understanding of our values to make our younger generations remember the hard as well as the pleasant memories alive, for without those memories, we are left with nothing.

A system change may not happen tomorrow, it may not come about even in five to ten years; but one day it will come and it is most crucial in the context of our unbroken history as a nation to keep alive the good as well as the bad parts of our national voyage. Without which we are merely a collection of  two-legged animals that follow a tribal leader whose only qualification happens to be that he is able to kill better than the rest.

Really, Vishwa dear, which country are you writing from? Have you not read the newspapers since 2019? Once you wake up from your nightmare, would you do us a favour and read up on the APC, which only the JVP is not attending?

“What was most promising at the beginning of the Aragalaya has fizzled out abruptly.” – Vishwamithra
      .

      1) I make no apology to repeatedly espouse the view that unless a future ‘Aragalaya’ or any other addresses the CORROSIVE link between politicians/professionals/private sector/media which FACILITATE corruption and abuse of power, a ‘system change’ will be a DREAM. This must be brought to ‘CENTER’ stage and addressed.
      .

      2) Your “grieving howl with the advent of Ranil Wickremesinghe” must be harnessed as the CATALYST for this task.
      .

      3) Did not the youth driven ‘promising Aragalaya’ mainly fail (i) due to focusing on mere ‘regime change’ (ii) absence of a credible, competent and charismatic LEADER?
      .

      4) Did chasing out Gotabaya Rajapaksa bring about the required ‘system change’?
      .

      5) Another millstone we have to grapple with are power hungry and cowardly opposition ‘leaders’.

    1) To me Aragalaya was apolitical, non violent spontaneous protest against corrupt politicians / govt , by those struggling masses and in general supported by all. 2) During which time, as expected certain political, religious and other fringe elements infiltrated with the purpose of hijacking, the very movement and it’s causes. 3) Few who came out identifying as it’s leaders/ spokes person/ representatives were, more by circumstance than choice. 4) What happened after is nothing but usual political / media gimmick. The twist, spin, changed directions (the usual) have no bearing to true Aragalaya. The only mistake on their part was that, they could not prevent these corrupt elements, from infiltrating 5) This whole discussion, false accusations, NGO / financial implications are work of corrupt politicians/ supporters/ media. 6) Lankans in general cannot see anything beyond religion and politics. So they believe what is told and in turn blame Aragalaya.(my long time personal opinion is now expressed, finding the right article.

We can rant all we want.
But if we don’t figure out the truth behind the plight of our nation, ranting is all we will do till kingdom come.
We have to put all our emotional biases aside and face the truth.
Sri Lanka is in the mess we are in because our economy was destroyed by the thieving, unscrupulous, organised criminal Mara and his family.
Mara and co took hold of our government and used the trust and authority to do every crime under the sun to swindle our economy of every penny they got their hands on.
Not just that, they struck deals with China to strategically give China a long-term footing in Sri Lanka. They knew what their actions entailed.
But that is not what I want to focus on today.
Mara family entrenched themselves with the Sri Lankan underworld, with un-buddhist yellow pets, the drug mafia, the police, down to the village crook level. They have spread their tentacles.
They have a hand in every bad thing that is happening in the country. They are the cancer of the Sinhala society.
If we don’t bring them out and physically dispose of everyone in that family, the damage being done to our country will continue. We will not be able to change anything.

At the very least, even rants must be based on reality.

        OC,
You, I, and a sizable set of realists know that much of our rants are not based on reality or rational reasoning.
        .
Media houses most often send us in the wrong direction for this simple reason, we use emotion instead of logic.
        .
Media houses dictate what people think and how opinions are formed.
We simply do not use our brains.
        .
That is why we keep wasting our time and missing the target almost always.
on the other hand, culturally it has been inculcated into us not to think. If we think and find something wrong with the general consensus, we are encouraged to keep mum, because some elderly idiot will be slighted or some yellow pet will look like an imbecile.
        .
This is why in fact we can tolerate a bunch of dimwits/illiterate scum running our affairs whilst giving the most idiotic logic, yet we blindly accept it in good faith.
When are we going to change I wonder!

Where are media houses any different?
There was a time when the main media was all pro-UNP. Radio was state controlled.
SWRDB battled the media using the radio.
Mrs B, egged on by the LSSP, tried nationalising the Lake House. But LH knew how to buy MPs and the bid fell through.
Then there was the Davasa group that was pro-SLFP, but turned hostile when refused a contract.
          Then came the Island.
However until 1994 the UNP dominated the print media without owning any newspaper. things have changed since.
There are media empires today that play cheap and dirty politics. We select from among bags of lies– there is choice one can say.
          *
Please tell me where on earth media is committed to the truth?
RT at least does not lie, whereas the BBC world Service specializes in it.

Human Touch, You have so clearly distinguished between ranting and truth, that the family entrenched with the underworld trying to make black money white, could possibly have tentacles to a recent horrible murder too. This cancer must be surgically excised to prevent our nation’s untimely death from it. Suffice it to say that their eternal destiny will be gruesome.

If only you knew how extensively the Mara family has connected themselves to all the scum in all the many spheres of the corrupt, wicked, conniving, cheating, killing circle of society, you will wonder if there is such an evil family in all of SL.
Yes, it is true, I wish I could elaborate on my facts further in this 200-word space.
The only skill the family has is criminal skills. They have zero intellectual abilities.
So like I said, they have spread corruption throughout the nation and cultivated a set of crooks and criminals into their group from every walk of life.
Those dimwitted goons are the agents of Mara clan.
Together they have succeeded in dismantling or destroying the civility of our society. In essence, we have become a cesspit of corruption.
Since they are working as a team, while the ordinary citizen is all alone, we have no serious impact on curbing their nefarious activities.
And most ordinary people keep falling victim to the propaganda machine (the media mafia) which is a fully integrated part of the disease I am talking about.
Unless we kill them in public there is no escape.

The Mara family has extensive connections to corrupt individuals and organizations in various industries and has cultivated a network of criminals from all walks of life. Their only skill is in criminal activity, and they have used their influence to spread corruption throughout the nation and undermine the civility of society. Together with their agents, they have been successful in causing significant harm to the community. The media, which is controlled by the Mara family, spreads propaganda to manipulate the public and prevent efforts to stop their nefarious activities. The only solution may be to take drastic action to confront and expose the Mara family’s wrongdoing.

            HT,
People are misled and lied to. Television media is disastrous. The nature of people as humans is easily understood by their ears and eyes, they start to believe everything. It is also common in other primates. Also for domestic dogs. Cross-examination before understanding something is a learning exercise. It is not taught at all in Sri Lankan education: as in battery cage chicken farms, students in local schools receive free education up to an entrance fee. Even after graduating from UNI, they have not yet completed a knowledge-based education that enables them to do things on their own. Today, many university graduates in Sri Lanka are unemployed.

Today, many people including MPs of this country repeatedly say that this is a wonderful country.

That’s the reason even if you rape a woman in broad daylight, rob louder than anyone (Namal and Mara’s rascals continue), publicly kill ruby players, buy rich properties with public money, or travel publicly with 200 or more supporters. -Looking for ministers and henchmen (200 of people’s taxes), but people believe, Mara is Sri Lanka’s Saibaba. why ?

Media prostitutes and artists were also given privileges by misappropriating public funds.

. If you please look into the facts, why is the government wasting so much money yet to protect Mahinda Rajapaksa?

Why can’t that huge sums be used to provide a safety fence around the villagers who are being attacked by elephants?

            :
If civilization is at the top of Sri Lankan society, Mara’s family and his close confidiantes should have lonh been jailed for as long as their former leader Mubarak was tried in Egypt.

          HT,
          :
Private television has become the main source of news for the common people today. It’s simple – what you believe is what you see. Each TV channel has got their own ” media prostitutes”… Chamuditha Samarawickrama or the like are planting news for commercial gains.

Misleading news is worse than covid-pandemic. The media behavior from dawn to dusk is similar to that of alcoholic Tahitians or people in the Seychelles. It is said that 95% of Seychellois are addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Rajapaksa’s crimes (murders, rape, drug trafficking and other illegal ways of making money) may hurt their loved ones, but how can they be brainwashed to justify it in favor of the middle class?

APE MINIHA (Our Man) Ordinance is on top of politics. Called “Salum Door – Open Door to Anyone”.

Why on earth, why the intelligent public could not break the unethical priviledge “cases are ours, taxes are ours – cases are ours, lawyers are ours, judges are ours” for the Rajapaksa family.

We have a community of over 15,000 lawyers in Sri Lanka
          .
We have more than 20000 yellow pets (1% can be good monks)

Every year 30,000 graduates leave local universities thanks to free educaton (tax payer funding).

This malaise was well known to people who knew MaRa specially and the family more in general terms for aggrandizement!!!
When people in the know tried to expose, they were forcibly shut down and the Justice system was in the wrong hands!!??
The person in charge, was not keen on dispensing justice, the sole purpose he was installed in that position!!!
He was more interested in other areas and not rationally or to focus on the mission of accomplishing purpose of his appointment!? IT WAS DISPENSATION OF “TOM FOOLERY” AT ITS BEST – NOT JURISPRUDENCE!!! GREATEST MISC ARRIAGE OF JUSTICE IN HISTORY!!!
Country is so corrupt to the core, that none were left out including this individual dispenser of Justice, still enjoys state pension after this miscarriage of Justice!!!??
Don’t know of the possible hand in recent murder, but gut feeling, necessarily outside their reach!!!??
Notwithstanding, they are very HUMANE, when it suits them!!?? Case in point, when JRJ was president and 1987/89, arbitrary killing of those involved in the revolt, the first to go to UNHRC, Geneva!!?? Humane indeed and supporting Mothers front!!!??
Although all subsequent adventurers to Geneva were termed, castigated and murdered criminally treacherous Traitors!!??

      Dear Human Touch,
      .
The common people of Sri Lanka, especially the entire Sinhalese people (all over the island) believe any outright lies about “Rajapak thieves” to be true. In any other society the youth grasp the truth and become rebels… But in this country our youth are left with this…. The saddest and most unfortunate reality is that our youth as a whole is not regulated by knowledge. And fact information: every election after 5 years, more than 1 million first-time voters and considered decisive for the last election result. However, Rajapakse’s campaign tactics also use various unthinking tactics to mislead the swing states and the youth. Namal baby 35, is well set to continue his father’s criminal legacy. “Our people and our voters are smarter than they appear… They are relatively intelligent. To be honest, people are very stupid… They don’t know right from wrong… It is mixed and blurred in their thinking… They are upper middle class. It doesn’t matter if you come from middle class or lower class, so the result is like walking in a cycle.

When I was a child, our relatives told us that there is a rabbit in the bright moon and we believed it to be true. This is how we learned to fall for myths. Many did not oppose them. At the same time, our relatives told me that “Rajapaksha is a bully in the belly”: they had no reputation in the south, but Mahinda Rajapaksa was known as a thug and a rebel.
Looking back, that’s how we evolved in this society. As someone who left the country in my early 20s, everything in Europe was new to me. I had the opportunity to interact with different nations of the world. The culture shock made me curious to learn more and wonder why our people don’t act according to law and order and true information. Seeing how systems can tame people for structured lifestyles was my perception.

          Dear LM
          .
From the comments, it if fairly obvious that most of us are in agreement regarding the root cause of our troubles.
          .
JVP which is the main opposition should know these facts too.
          .
But my question to you and others on CT is; what have the JVP done to checkmate these issues?
          .
The JVP have not confronted the corrupt media institutions like Derana, they have not lambasted and condemned the yellow pets, neither have the tried to expose the drug mafia nor have they risen up against known criminal kingpins in the society.
          .
AKD will climb on the stage and talk and talk but there is no impact. They do not have the intelligence to bring about any kind of sanity to the society. Or are they part of the problem too?
          .
A good leader should be able to directly influence ills of the society directly and bring about some sanity. Unfortunately JVP/NPP and AKD are just cry babies in my honest view.

One of the few commenters I respect today is H.T. He analyzes it all. His thoughtful views are polarizing on this platform.
However, I think our NPP CT instructors can answer this question better. Sinhala Man_ Panini Edirisinha, NIC ….. leave it to you, time for you to answer this question please… no excuses any more.

Assuming that the grassroots are drawn to the JVP or vice versa, they can inject their good thoughts into the poor, illiterate villagers. Then it will be a win-win situation. No doubt sane people will accept the ideology if it is proven to be free from corruption and misdirection.
Our people are full of stupidity and when some educated people turn their side, everyone else imitates it. It is logical for any society. That was the case from the mid-seventies to the late 80s. However, unfortunately, past 15 years have taken a completely different direction with Sri Lankan politics both inside and outside the country. Isn’t this the perfect time to question why?

They JVPrs should better raise these questions that are obvious to anyone with common sense.
Why JVP is not raising voice enough against Rajapaksa mafia under world issues (with drug traffickers like Nimal Lanza and others) in the country which is stronger than their state level foreign affairs?

Recent incidents in Theldeniya, Maligawatta and other parts of the country leave evidence that could land those people in jail.

. I have no doubt, JVP leaders know better than anyone about this coexistence. How do they answer this question today? You always miss the question why JVP was silent on the nomination of Gotha before the Election Commission 2019 (Senior Advocate Mr. Naganananda Kodithuvakku continues to do so). It is a puzzle for us as a country. If JVP is right about authenticity, how can they avoid the real issues?

We clearly know that Rajapakse is a deadly cancer compared to all other politicians who have ruled and destroyed this country today. Economic experts point out very clearly that today the nation has to pay Chinese banks “over-administrative – over-interest loans”. BMICH and some Mahawali projects were given by the international community, but Mara’s two verses further exposed this nation as a corrupted woman. Experts reveal that 80% of those loans are losses. With this being the reality, further bashing Ranil will not bring any of us an inch of progress.

Premadasa, who was bombed in the early 90ties , did not hurt his people as much as Mahinda Rajapaksa’s cunning. Even Duterte in the Philippines killed drug users and traffickers, but some other areas, which led to economic growth during his tenure.

Instead, as I see it, JVP is deliberately avoiding most issues. If NPP is genuine, each is a valid question. Do you know why they are silent on this matter?

I will reveal you more about that next days.

We are a land full of arable island. However, how much land is lying vacant in rural corners unused for domestic agriculture? If the Janata Vimukti Peramuna has done its duty properly, by feeding the farmers with due know hows, how can the rural communities and farmers waste time doing nothing in their gardens?

              Dear leelagemalli,
              .
When I posted these last two comments about the meeting in Düsseldorf, I hadn’t seen the many questions you have posed about the NPP’s stand on numerous issues. We now have four of AKD’s speeches in Europe. I’m sure that, despite the inevitable repetition, you have answers to all the questions you have posed.
              .
It is dishonesty of the highest order that you continue to disingenuously pose questions. This last video is the most damning of them all. AKD travels all the way to your town; all Sri Lankans in Germany (a country about four times the size of Lanka) would have received notice of this meeting. True, you dislike AKD and the JVP; surely you could have gone across to the meeting; more than walking distance, may be. The city is large, no doubt, but you who trot around Europe could have travelled the few kilometers to the meeting and asked AKD those questions without revealing that you comment on CT. Huge disappointment for me; but surely this damns you forever!
              .
What was the date? You must surely know. Don’t you believe in exchanging information? I’ve told you so much! This is disgusting!

That previous comment I had word processed before the power cut, many hours ago, and I submitted it just now.
              .
I have no problem with HT’s criticisms of the NPP/JVP; I get the feeling that LM, although you are a good and decent man, you are being disingenuous now. I don’t like it.
              .
ONOH, the comments by HT that appear here are most welcome; you are right to demand the highest standards from the NPP. I get the feeling that you are open to reason. Now strongly opposed to the JVP there is the possibility of your accepting them, if they continue to act impressively. You will be stubborn, but not impossibly so. Applies to all of us! Only once, when I told him that not all serious scholars agree that re-birth was an integral part of Buddhism, and sent him Dr Palihakkara’s book, he asked me why I hadn’t read it. Well, I don’t have a Buddhist background, although both of you are good Buddhists. You only reject most of our Buddhist monks who are parasites.

This is not acceptable. correct term would be ” more confused” … not at all disingenous.
                .
I’m dumb, “SM, NIC hunter, PE, JVPrs GURU of the day” about you. Not me, you are absolutely brainwashed today. Thanks for getting back to me on this critical issue, however, the video you provided contained nothing on the point we were making.
              :
You can fool anyone else, but not me.

nevertheless, Thanks again for making effort to provide some info about the question. I read somewhere that the reason AKD didn’t respond at the time was that he was pressed with various other issues and was believed to be all clear about the condemnation of GOTA’s US citizenship. My gosh, can a man of a self-proclaimed pure clean politician ignore it that way ?We understand PREMADADA junior did the same…. however whole lot of people in the country are now thinking of AKD more than SJB leader……. .. that you have always been shariing with us…. however I am not yet into AKDISM.
              :
I never expected this from a man of AKD nature. If I could accept another politician’s refusal to do so, but a man who was always looking for hair in the soup … , how could he answer like that?

They always overestimate their race and take about 2500 years of heritage and other high values. But … they are unable to arrive on time for a meeting with foreign representatives … they do not apologize for the big mistake … Sinhala Buddhist monks have done nothing to properly train the people … My dreams were, after I lost a brutal war, they That goals will be achieved exponentially.

It could not register in your head that it is preposterous for a court of law to examine a faked criminal creation of a counterclaim and put its stamp of approval on it making a huge mockery of the justice system of the land. It obviously is an unprecedented national disaster that people ought rise up to and register in protest. I hope the Chief Justice, IGP, Members of BASL etc., get to read these postings and place their palms on chests and say Oh Lord.

Agree with you wholeheartedly. We all know how the Rajapakse clan & their cronies robbed the country but they still continue to pull strings unashamedly. I recently came across a TikTok clip of Tiran Alles stating in public how he brokered meetings for Rajapakses with the LTTE & even witnessed bags of cash being given to them as payment for getting the voters of North & East to boycott the elections. In times of war, this is high treason but the Rajapakses continue to be venerated as saviours of the Sinhala nation & Buddhism. RW is supposed to have lost out by this conspiracy, yet, he, with all the powers behind him now & Alles, the Police Minister, seem to have short memories. If Alles was wrong, why hasn’t the Rajapakses have not protested their innocence? Furthermore, should Alles continue as Police Minister if he has lied? When there is so many allegations against the Rajapakses why are we silent?

“Not just that, they struck deals with China to strategically give China a long-term footing in Sri Lanka.”
      As simple as that?
For example, Hambantota harbour (initiated under CBK and twice considered desirable by independent investigators) was undertaken by China only after others were willing.
A renewable energy project for which many had bidden and awarded to a Chinese firm. then India objects through its clients in the North, follows it up with pressure during the financial crisis, gets it cancelled and now secured without tender procedure.
Was any of the deals with Ambani group after proper tender procedure?
What procedure was followed to sell 40% the Kerawelapitiya power plant to a US business?
How was the US-based New Fortress Energy (NFE) awarded the contract to construct an off shore Floating Storage Regasification Unit and the pipeline system to supply LNG to Yugadhanavi and Kelanitissa power plants?
All of these were under Gotabaya.
Let us be consistent with our criteria.

THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REACHING SUCH HIGH DIVINE STATUS!!!
Key to the solution is in the hands of those unscrupulous 6.9 million (now closing on 7.2 million) of people exercising the power to vote!!!
Only way, elections or no elections, that anomaly should be corrected, otherwise there is no salvation to this country!!
No way, you will stop ‘APE MINIHA’, coming back to power and seizing the balance wealth that is left – although a MESS OF POTTAGE!!!??

    It’s very simple.

Can you name one leader who came to power with the intention of doing the best for the country? ……… Just name one! …… I’ll destroy any leader you name with nothing but the very basic truth.

NF, absolutely right. There is not one single leader / govt had done any good to Lanka. No one was genuine to even make an attempt. They all are “hanging in” for their own reasons. ( self / family gain, corruption, criminal activities, immunity, racist agenda, power, ego) . All we had is family kleptocracy, Senanayakas, Bandas, JR / RW, Premadasas, and “mother of all’ Rajapaksas. Then to find fault at Aragalaya is typical Lankanness trait.

          Why reinvent the wheel?

          December 6, 2015 ………. https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/there-is-no-an-alternative

Three extraordinary figures have emerged in the last few decades, all to the great misfortune of Sri Lanka.

          1. Velupillai Prabhakaran – A man with exceptional talent to build an organization from ground up and direct it with single-mindedness and utter brutality to try and achieve an objective. People now forget how Prabhakaran held sway the fate of SL for more than a decade. Of all the SL political figures that have emerged in my life time – of people I can make my opinions first-hand without depending on histories or other people’s opinions/writings – there is no one I have higher regard for than good old Prabhakaran (please understand, I am an objective realist; not a Singhalese zealot.) This is not to say I hold him in any high regard but to show how much regard I have for the rest of the clowns. No other Lankan political figure – in spite of their chest-beatings and grand Brando-esque-acting (oh boy!) – would have sacrificed his family for a cause he believed-in, the way Prabhakaran did. And I raise my hat to him for that.

          • 2
            1

            continued

Although there is no shortage of people lining up (not for truth but for the benefits that it entails) to take credit for the defeat of the LTTE, the main factor that defeated the LTTE is time. People forget that, the 70s SL was a very closed society/country and the only recourse people had against bad-governance was revolt. Don’t forget the Singhalese (JVP) revolted first before the Tamils. The revolts were born out of sheer hopelessness; that people had to stay-put and cop it for the rest of their lives. When in later years the world opened up and ordinary (not just the educated class) Lankans could emigrate and escape bad-governance the reasons for revolts diminished – not that SL all of sudden became a better place. Most of the Tamils had escaped and were financially supporting the war from overseas and Prabhakaran was left to kidnap children to fight his battles.

              1

              continued

              2. Mahinda Rajapakse – Immensely talented charismatic conman that can con a vast swath of Sri Lanka. He cannot tell a truth even if his life depended on it. Great ability to twist everything to his advantage and sell it utilizing body-language, facial-expressions, modulated-voice and all the other tools of the trade. These people are born; never made. His siblings or offsprings can’t do what he does; will be laughed off the stage. His son Namal has got the lying/twisting part down pat but he doesn’t have his other attributes and never will. I don’t condone what he does but I admire the man’s extraordinary talent which no other SL politician posses. In these relative-morality shindigs, where do you start and where do you end? Like my Italian buddy frederico nichelinni sad “Life has not been devised by morality: it wants deception, it lives on deception — but wouldn’t you know it?” Gotta hand it to the man; he does it with great finesse!

              • 4
                1

                continued

                3. Ranil Wickramasinghe – The most inept extraordinarily leadership-talent-less leader. I hold Ranil equally responsible for Mahinda and his merry-men’s excesses. No other leader of opposition would have let Mahinda get away with what he did for such a long time. But give the devil his due. He is the only current SL politician who has even a bird fluttering in his brain about the modern 21st century world; the other’s mind-set is pure medieval. He is the only one, in his own way, trying to drag SL kicking and screaming, at least in to the 19th (if not 21st) century. Knowing Lankans, I don’t know if he will be successful, but I have to acknowledge his effort. My doubts are raised because Lankans are blessed with a special foolishness; without having a plan and implementing it they go and ask others for help. It’s Lankan man’s way of passing the responsibility to others. When he went to Japan and Singapore to ask help my heart sank.

I still think we are just analysing the symptoms and not the cause. Our problems at subterranean strata is anthropological – what happens when an advanced culture is imposed on a primitive culture and withdrawn? Do people evolve in to the advanced culture? Do people revert back to their primitive culture? Or do people wallow in a hybrid-purgatory of the two cultures?

    Dear Vishwamithra,
    .
I’ve been in the Colombo District for some time. Inevitably one meets those who regard themselves as forming the “English-speaking-elite”. They claim that a future NPP government wouldn’t be able to handle “Europeans”. It is typical of these people that they snigger at the leadership of the NPP as people who will be lost on the International Scene. I’m not speaking about those who visit this site.
    .
Never mind that. Where do Tamil speakers stand?
    .
Here now is AKD in Paris with a Sinhalese-language-YouTuber who is a lawyer in exile:
    .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_egq74kLC6M
    .
This seemingly wide-ranging discussion is going to take 75 minutes. I’m still at 23 minutes. The discussion has so far encompassed strategies for achieving power, law and order including rejection use of wide-spread capital punishment, recognition of LGBT Rights.
    .
There was a welcome translation of AKD’s Speech in Badulla:

      SM,
This is in response to a comment you posted elsewhere.
      .
What exactly do you want to say? Is it okay to let the son of any heinous criminal be killed? I was shocked by the brutality of the killing. I didn’t know he was the son of a weapons leader. That means Prabhakaran’s son was killed, do you also agree with that killing? God, SM, what kind of man are you?
      .
Sometimes when you tried to play Mother Teresa, I thought you respected the whole human race. No, I must have thought wrong about you. In those days, everyone else in CT was unhappy: there you were like a peace point, because at that time there was no JVP, NPP, but now you are changing a lot. I don’t know if it’s because of aging or something else. You’re not the only person we know you at first. Why are your comments full of attacking someone? I know everyone feels like a devil if life is very frustrating….. I know very well,.. from what I have experienced so far in my life..
I thought you were more respectable. However, over time your behavior has become that of some Germans and other Europeans who have fallen prey to the Israeli blind brotherhood. If anyone stand against the NPP/JVP you are attacking the person today. why is that ?

      “NPP government”

NPP is just eye-wash (es banndun) to hoodwink the people that JVP is a broad front …….. but when in power a clique/cabal of JVP insiders will take all decisions and run the government: like in Iran. ……… Gota also had a band of professionals Vijaya Maga or such crap ……… what happened to them? Were they listened to or involved in any of Gota/Rajapakse brilliant decisions that bankrupted the country?

AKD is a great Lankan talker: that’s it, full stop. …….. I can talk too, better than Native, just let me run the country: I’ll bankrupt it quicker and better than any Rajapakse or any other Lankan pol!

I find AKD’s knowledge of the modern world and economics (global and local) is infantile at best.

Criticizing is easy ……. doing is difficult. …… Like AKD, his erstwhile buddy Wimal is the greatest criticiser Lanka has ever produced …….. but can he rectify or run any of that/what he is so great at criticizing?

If talking is all what matters!

Idols are best when they’re made of stone

And martyrs most certainly die too young

“Criticizing is easy ……. doing is difficult. …… Like AKD, his erstwhile buddy Wimal is the greatest criticiser Lanka has ever produced …….. but can he rectify or run any of that/what he is so great at criticizing?”

I wonder if our new found JVP Guru – Sinhala guy can add his response to this?
        .
The main problem of SM or vulnerable is that their naivety is worse than that Sinhala Buddhist syndrome. Our aging population, seniors and retired professionals, many of whom can think beyond that….that is what has destroyed this nation time after time… ..the other puzzle I have today.

Looking back, why SM did not try Dhammika paniya (Dhammika syrup mixed by schizophrenic Dhammika Bandara on the order of ” Kaliamma” to cure Sri Lankan people from covid)…. ?

Surprisingly enough, there are few seniors that act rationally… when I read articles from Mr. Shaiman Jayasinghe -It is inspiring I would say….. his multifaceted thinking. he gives us food for thoughts….

      Dear NPP GURUS of CT,
      .
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptEY9Vv2NO8

You, SM (NIC hunter) call me “stereotypical”, however, can you explain me below?

You abused your pen to attack me the same way those fish mongers teased their colleagues until now, but I didn’t act instantly. However, other than asking us to listen to their MILANO, PARIS, BERLIN videos, I would love to read something constructive about your engagement with JVPs.
      .
I want also to know what to be serious about what SAMAN W on stage is emphasizing. The just charges cannot be brought to court, allowing Rajapaksa or other such big criminals to further abuse this impunity in this Country.

When the reality is this, why do these JVP cry babies continue with their comic style public speeches?

Wimal weerawanse did it all along until WESTERN PROVINCE was misled fully.

People today are well aware of filthy sinhala-stage rhetorics. I appeal to people of this country to react instantly, if these men would act like wimal weerawanse again…. we dont want people be misled continuously. This is just comparable with that of polarising effect of “HINDI FILMS” to far poor folks in India.

This is another example of how the mainstream media in Sri Lanka is misleading the nation.
        .
        1) Ranil didn’t say he would be a Hitler.. but Rajapakshes did.. however JEPPO and some other politicians and all other media freaks painted the picture in favor of them and their political propaganda. Janata Vimukthi Peramuna should not be like Kadamandi or Linda Langama sangamaya people. This may be the reason why PEOPLE not yet take them SERIOUS.

It’s up to you JVPs, think twice before being extreme pranksters. If you are honest politicians, stand up against the animals MEDAMULANA caves.. They stole the last coin of the nation. If you would not do the due yet, Your credibility is questionable.

This is not against real good JVP supporters but against some stupid JVPs.

    Dear “leelagemalli” of Germany
    .
Here on this “Milan Speech” recording,
    .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AGR9TuP6hY
    .
almost at the very end, from 1.57.55 to 2.00.03 of the 2.02.46 recording, AKD spends just over 2 minutes on this citizenship issue. At the time of the Presidential Elections the UNP candidate was Sajith Premadasa, but the Leader of the Party was Ranil. AKD then deals with Diana Gamage, who began to play a role in our politics later, at the Parliamentary Elections on 2 August 2020.
    .
On this recording, this discussion about Gota’s citizenship and Diana, goes on until 2.01.46, so almost 4 minutes.
    .
The explanation may be unsatisfactory; that’s a different matter. Let us identify the less than 4 minutes that we have here.

    .
I appeal to you to listen to this. Let us discuss this later. This article appeared just as we got to the 21st December 2022. So we have a full day to go. And they are holidays for LM in Germany. If we cannot agree on the details of this explanation let’s come back to it below any article where the discussion would not be out of place.

      Panini Edirisinhe of Bandarawela/drama queen/NIC hunter/JVP GURU………………?

For his response to be agreeable, it must also be valid for any other selection criteria. I actually asked this a while ago. However, we are not satisfied with such silly claims. However, it was similar to his misinterpretation of what the President said in Parliament the other day. “President Ranil wanted to be a Hitler”. How will AKD attack “biased broadcasts by media houses”? Such misdeeds are really very irresponsible to me.

I never expected that AKD, who claims to be a clean man in every way, would stoop to such pretenses.
      :
The presidential candidate nomination criteria were clear to all. Mr. Nagananda Kodituvakku will have to write again about this.
      :
Thank you for deliberately trying to endanger my life by citing my “geo-location” multiple times a day as you being a “drama queen”….
      .
Anyway, Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year!

Please, LM, I’m trying to be as clear and open as possible.
        .
To forestall more confusion and accidents, why don’t you tell all readers as clearly and unambiguously as possible what you know about AKD’s assignments in Europe and what genuinely puzzles you. That’s what I’ve been doing.
        .
The unfair and illegitimate has all come from Ranil. You had given a clip of what Ranil had said, and then, there wasn’t anything wrong with AKD saying that he’s acting like Hitler.
        .
I am interacting with local NPP people in Bandarawela; the rest I get to know from the Internet. I did visit Maharagama, but the whys and wherefores are hardly of public interest. Why don’t you tell us what you know of AKD’s European trip/trips. Report as clearly as possible, so that we can add what we can actually discuss, and not hurl abuse.
        .
How many meetings did AKD address (to the best of your knowledge). I don’t want to ask “leading questions”. This same thing that happened with reference to your unnecessary sarcasm about my accompanying AKD to Milan. You know enough “facts” to report them faithfully to those who must know. After getting the try to make only sober comments.
        .
I’m tired now. My best wishes to you and all your loved ones for Christmas and the New Year.
        .
        Panini

          Dear LM

Now, I’ve messed up with capitalisation after a long time.
          .
It has resulted in turning everything in Lasantha’s comment into bold. And I notice that LM has comments below this.
          .
Let’s look at all this tomorrow, and hope that you have stopped using sarcasm, LM.

There has to be a mass uprising of a popular revolution led by the valiant and committed youth who demonstrated their sincerity at Galle Face for months on end. The lotus-eating sedated population must awake, and heed the calls for action now, to make that system change meaningful. As Mahatma Gandhi did enabled in India, the people must be willing to sacrifice some comforts and face their oppressors for the sake of future generations. Now is the time. Elections will never bring any meaningful change, as one set of rogues hand over to the opposite set of rogues taking turns at splurging on the carcass of Mother Lanka.

      LP,
dont you force to think TODAY that ARAGALAYA was a project by colombo affluent classes to get rid of “unbelievable gota” in the end ? They supported to save the country from a roudy bunch (Gota, Nissanka senadhipathi,, Dilith Jayaweera) that was doing nothing to save the people. Gota administration could not even handle thrivial things such as providing proper ” cooking gas cylinders” to the people.

As you yet do, I was initially forced to think it came only from the valiant youth. However, it became a pickle in the end leaving a big scarce than a powerful sign of the potentiality of the youth. I may be wrong, but I am struggling to think it on again and again.

      Dear Lasantha,
      .
      Your consistency, I respect immensely.
I have given your comment a green thumbs-up. Let nobody misunderstand that. Apart from these comments, you have written many articles with your photograph on them.
      .
      This is one of them:
      .
      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/why-the-aragalaya-is-the-only-solution-for-sri-lanka/
      .
I have responded there, twice; so has leelagemalli who doesn’t want his name revealed.
      .
However, Lasantha, I repeat my October statements: we must give thought to who will “run” this country after the Aragalaya. And I have been sticking my neck out on that. I repose my trust in AKD, whom I have never met, and never spoken or written to. Given the opportunity, I will.
      .
But in the case of “leelagemalli”, I have had more than 800 email”conversations with him. I have spoken to him on WhatsApp, with our respective camera’s turned on so we’ve seen each other. He’s couriered chocolates, and vitamins to me! So I have no doubt that he’s real.
      .
The problem with all this globalisation is that we never know whether this corresponds to what really exists. Therefore I tell readers who I am. It is “leelagemalli” who must respond clearly!

Panini Edirisinhe of Bandarawela (NIC 483111444V)/NEWLY FOUND GURU TO JVPrs.
        .
Thank you sinhala man, also in all these sacred days I will be chased by your people again. Two of them are from Italy (cheap men as before). One is from London. Both were registered on my mobile once. Looks like you’re having fun – quoting my spots over and over again…
        .
All I can say is you listen/watch to the video below.

      Dear Manel,
      .
It’s good to see you back, and seemingly in good humour.
      .
I informed Vishwa of the slip on Fri, 23 Dec, @ 16:18. He’s responded appreciatively. I may have said that something similar happened before. Vishwamithra manages his correspondence effectively. His responses don’t tell us anything about him, other than that the response comes from “Vishwamithra.”
      .
I don’t mind; perhaps because my overall view of what besets the country is in keeping with his views. Also I’m not really protective of my email address – except the password. I think that I’d better record the time here: 01.28 on 26/12/2022.
      .
I hope that this response from me doesn’t lead to any problems. I can’t help feeling that every useful innovation brings with it a need for us to act with ever greater responsibility.
      .
      Panini Edirisinhe (back in Bandrawela)
