ExamHub Revolutionizes Educational Gaming for Sri Lankan Students

ExamHub, a mobile application designed to gamify exam preparation for Sri Lankan students, continues to make waves in the education sector. Developed by Fonix Software Solutions, this award-winning app has swiftly gained popularity, particularly among students in Grades 6 to 13, who are now finding joy in preparing for exams through an interactive, gaming-like experience.

ExamHub’s unique blend of education and entertainment has won it several prestigious awards, including the National Winner – UN17 SDG Initiative at the SLASSCOM Ingenuity Awards 2022, and the Best Disruptive Product Innovation. The app has managed to bridge the gap between traditional exam preparation and modern digital engagement, particularly for students preparing for Sri Lanka’s critical Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations.

An Engaging and Innovative Approach

What sets ExamHub apart from conventional educational apps is its interactive structure. The app presents exam questions as levels in a game. For example, Ordinary Level students can access 10 years’ worth of past exam papers, while Advanced Level students have access to five years’ worth of exam content. By dividing questions into small, manageable levels, ExamHub helps students engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed.

Students can also battle against their friends in real-time quizzes or take on self-challenge modes, where they race against the clock to solve as many questions as possible. A leaderboard, personal statistics tracker, and monthly contests add an element of healthy competition, motivating students to improve.

“ExamHub isn’t just about practicing for exams; it’s about inspiring students to want to practice,” says Umal Nanumura, Senior System Network Security Engineer at Fonix Software Solutions. “We knew that many students avoid doing practice papers because they find it tedious. By introducing gamification, we have created an environment where learning feels rewarding, not like a chore.”

Discussing his role in maintaining the app’s infrastructure, Nanumura emphasized the importance of building a resilient and secure system.

“Security is a key priority for ExamHub,” says Nanumura. “Our focus is on ensuring that the data students share and access on the platform is fully protected. We’ve implemented stringent security protocols to safeguard personal information and real-time interactions, such as Battle Quiz sessions, from potential cyber threats. For students and educators to trust our platform, we need to ensure that security is uncompromised.”

Nanumura also highlighted that one of his main responsibilities is to ensure that the platform can handle the heavy traffic ExamHub generates, especially during peak exam seasons. By optimizing the network and server infrastructure, Umal and his team guarantee that students can access the platform seamlessly, without disruptions or vulnerabilities.

Addressing a Critical Need

The app addresses a critical gap in exam preparation in Sri Lanka. According to recent statistics, nearly 60% of students do not practice exam papers before their Ordinary Level and Advanced Level exams. Additionally, only a small percentage of students take the time to check the right and wrong answers, or even understand why a particular answer is incorrect. ExamHub not only provides a solution to this problem but does so in an affordable and accessible way.

With over 261,000 downloads by June 2022, ExamHub’s daily user base continues to grow, with around 25,000 to 30,000 users engaging with the app daily. This surge in popularity reflects the app’s ease of use, which is enhanced by mobile VAS payment systems, allowing students to access the app for just LKR 3.00 per day.

The Future of ExamHub

Looking ahead, Fonix plans to expand the app’s reach by launching an English-medium version by the end of 2023. The company also intends to target younger students in Grades 3 to 5, with plans to incorporate drawing books, coloring arts, and other engaging games designed to nurture their curiosity.

“As we move forward, our focus is not just on making the app more engaging, but also on ensuring it’s a safe and secure environment where students can learn without concern. This is crucial for both student success and the integrity of our platform,” added Nanumura.

With its unique approach and rapid adoption, ExamHub is well-positioned to continue revolutionizing the way Sri Lankan students approach their education, combining learning with an element of fun that keeps them coming back for more.

ExamHub is available on the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Huawei App Gallery.
