A Boycott Of Sri Lanka Would Be Wrong

By William Hague –

William Hague

Next week, the Prime Minister and I will travel to Sri Lanka for the latest Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The 53 Commonwealth countries together represent two billion people – nearly a third of our world’s population – and some of its fastest-growing economies. Despite its significance, most discussion of the summit has centred on its location. In particular, because of Sri Lanka’s poor record on human rights, some people are calling for a British boycott.

I am among the first to want to see change in Sri Lanka. While we shouldn’t regret the end of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s campaign of terrorism, no one can forget the bloodshed and horrific images that accompanied the end of the long conflict between them and the government. The final push in 2009 saw thousands of people killed – many of them innocent civilians – and appalling alleged violations of human rights.

Four years later, Sri Lanka is still a country where civil society is suppressed, where NGOs and the media are routinely intimidated, where journalists and critics of the government have disappeared, and where no one has been held to account for alleged war crimes including rape and sexual violence. It is completely legitimate for there to be a debate about how we influence Sri Lanka so that these crimes and concerns are addressed.

Unlike the Labour Party, which was in power when Sri Lanka was chosen to host this meeting, and which has come out at the 11th hour to say that Britain should not attend, many of those advocating a boycott have been doing so for some time. I respect their views and share many of their concerns.

But I strongly believe that a boycott would be wrong. Attending the Commonwealth summit is the right thing to do. We do no good for the situation in Sri Lanka by sitting on the sidelines. During the final stages of the civil war, the international community was criticised for doing just that. By visiting, we can see the situation on the ground first-hand, meet people on all sides of the conflict, and raise our concerns frankly and directly with the government.

After CHOGM 2013, handing Sri Lanka (mass murderer Rajapakse) the lead role for two years is completely wrong.

He is primarily attending at the behest of the extreme right wing UKIP who need a white commonwealth since Germany has snubbed UK for being a “Thorn” in the Euro currency by rejecting regulation time and again for the benefit of London being the financial centre for and on behalf of Rothschild’s and Goldman sac’s who advised the PIGS.

Nothing new from what happened to good old “Blighty” when WW1 was on- R &G informed “Blighty” that they had lost the war and purchased wealth of the empire at less than ½ price.

The Sinhala Buddhist nationalist Rajapassa is today carrying and celebrating the WHITE MAN’S BURDEN – the notion the British Colonialism was the best thing that happened to the native’s of Asia and Africa!

The sick and excessive cultural pageant with lots of gyrating dancing girls is both a celebration of colonialism’s benefits to the natives and the Rajapassa military dictatorship!

          Strange world indeed.

Universities in Colombo have been closed for the duration of the British Commonwealth circus, because Rajapassa fears PROTESTS by students and Trade Unions will disrupt his CHOGM party to celebrate his CORRUPT Military Dictatorship and British Colonialism!

“A Boycott Of Sri Lanka Would Be Wrong”:

Yes indeed, for the selfish interests of the UK, otherwise how can they send the asylum seekers back to Sri Lanka to torture and possible death?

This is how they uphold the human rights of the Commonwealth.

This Guy Willian Hague, is sill carrying the WHITE MAN’D BURDEN and getting ready for the British Colonialism and Racism celebration party (CHOGM) that also announces the “arrival” of the Rajapassa MILITARY DICTATORSHIP in Sri Lanka- for all the world to see. Indeed the British Commonwealth’s “values” are upside down! CHOGM should definitely be BOYCOTTED!

What an absolute DISGRACE this CHOGM show is! Rajapssa is using it to display his security forces and quash any likelihood of protests- weeks before with massive security deployment in Colombo now and endless road closures and difficulties for Colombo residents for the CHOGM circus rehersals!
The British Commonwealth of Clowns circus has NO earthly significance or purpose in today’s world aside from continuing the WHITE MAN’S BURDEN! It has NO geo-political, social economic or security use to anyone. CHOGM is a massive WHITE ELEPHANT and huge WASTE of funds and should definitely be BOYCOTTED.
CHOGM celebrates third world Military dictators and the CHOGM business forum provides a venue to For British ARMS producers to market their weapons to the post-colonies!

      @Anpu…totally agree.

@william Hague…”by visiting we can see the situation on the ground first hand, meet the people on all sides of the conflict, and raise our concerns frankly and directly with the government”….. Well good luck with that William since all deemed undesirable have been removed from Colombo and anyone brave enough to protest will be arrested….all facts openly known before the talks even begin!, In reality you will go where you are taken and given the same banal answers one has come to expect I.e. “We are looking into the situation” or the other gem ” Nobody told me that that was happening”!!! What a sham….and so many of you attending?..

      Anpu,

Welcome! This is legendary British hypocrisy at best. This cannot be your first taste of it.

Learn to eat the cake and keep it. At the same time. Just like Hague. You will go places.

If Hague is not enough, learn from the infamous Milliband. Ref Wikileaks..ha..ha!

This is the secret of UK’s phenomenal success worldwide. It is a world power. Even 60 yers after the shut down of the empire. Despite a relatively small size, UK punches way above her weight. Often seen among global big boys and bullies. And wields veto power at the UN. Yes! Believe it or not.

      God save the queen!

      Cheers!

Was this Mr Hauge in the cabinet, when the mighty British Govt cowed to the LTTE London chapter and warned the Srilankan President not to come when he was planning a visit to talk about reconciliation?.

Now Mr Hauge and his PM talk as if we are still under the British Raj.

When would these arrogant whites learn to show some respect to the South Asian countries, which helped build the British Empire?.

Great Britain is the mother of commonwealth. It will be expecting too much for GB to boycott their own party.

Having said that William Hague’s statement here is dissapointing, a gentle pat on the shoulder for defeating LTTE Terrorism (his words not mine) and a gentle slap on the wrist for war crimes etc, conside this with ring his earlier rhteroic in the House Commons and elsewhere that they will be taking a tough message

It may give an impression that the British Bull dog has ben tamed by the Sri Lankan Lion.

British politicians act in a different way, there will be tough messages whispered into the ears of Mahinda the morning after the night before.

Mamohan Singh may take this statement in to consideration now and may well attend the CHOGAM.

The best these guys can do to the Tamils is to go to NE and meet the CM and see for themselves what is happening there

He still managed to make a politcal mileage out of this with a swipe at Labour Party.

RAJASh “Great Britain is the mother of the Commonwealth.”

THAT’S A HUGE BACKHANDED COMPLIMENT TO MR WHO HAS OBVIOUSLY SCREWED UP GREAT BRITAIN.

IT’S A MIGHTY CUTE WAY OF CALLING HIM A NASTY NAME.

BY THE WAY, WHY WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO EXPECT THE UK TO BOYCOTT THE CHOGM? BECAUSE , AS JON SNOW EXCLUSIVELY REPORTED IT, THEY HAD DRINKS WITH THE LANKAN DELEGATION TO THE UN IN A BAR DOWNTOWN NEW YORK ?

GUESS THERE’S A POINT THERE THOUGH. SURE, WHY CAN’T BIRDS OF A FEATHER MIX EH ?

SEEMS TO ME THAT THE EASIEST THING IN THIS WORLD IS TO BUY UP SPACE IN GLOBAL POLITICS AND MR IS DOING JUST THAT TO A NICETY.

ONE MUST SAY THAT THESE TRENDS , CHANGES AND WEAKNESSES ARE DEEPLY DISAPPOINTING.

NO SMALL WONDER THAT PRABHAKARAN HAD FAITH ONLY IN THE GUN.

LET’S NOT FORGET THAT ALL THESE NUANCES ARE SENDING WARNING SIGNALS TO THE TAMILS, ESPECIALLY THE DIASPORA AND REMNANT EXTREMISTS UP NORTH AND EAST. THAT’S A SCENARIO THAT HARDLY INFUSES A SENSE OF CONFIDENCE ABOUT THE FUTURE.

THERE’S A DISTINCT ODOR OF CRISIS IN THE AIR.I’D PREDICT THAT CRISIS TO HIT WITHIN THE NEXT TWP TO THREE YEARS.

“NO SMALL WONDER THAT PRABHAKARAN HAD FAITH ONLY IN THE GUN.”

The mother of all step-fathers did not bite the capsule or gun himself!

The future is SL would become the one and only Sinhala Buddhist State (SC) of India or it would get annihilated for 1000 years with south china sea power play to stop India&China from becoming the only super power. The US needs Chinese money to fight China and SL is preparing the infrastructure for the US with Chinese dosh.

I understand what you are saying. I just watched Willaim Hague’s interview on C4. These Guy’s consider them the guardian of the Commonwealth and they are not going to abstain from their own party.

They have another diplomatic and Royal protocol to consider that of the Royal Representative Prince Charles and Camilla.Which is already a downgraded representative. The Royal Protocol does not allow the British Prime minster to leave the already relegated Royal representative high and dry.So ther are so many dimensions to this.

I dont agree that the CHOGAM is a back handed compliment to MR

I totally agree on why we Tamils took up arms to resorted to armed struggle. But in that process there were some international crime comitted and we are paying the price for it.

Sorry RajasH, missed this thread. No, about the backhanded compliment I meant something else, but never mind.
Yeah, I forgot about the protocol thing.

I expected something tangible, something sensible, from Cameron.

God help us if Charles follows up with another howler like Cameron’s and says something like ” We insist that CM Wigneswara is appointed chairman of the Lankan government’s committee to probe war crime allegations”

    Dear William Hague,

Don’t give excuses for visiting Sri Lanka. We have seen you shaking hands with the regime and sharing cordial drinks with the same man who is responsible for all the crimes against humanity. You all have missed all the opportunities to raise these issues with that regime and failed to act to stop a genocide.

CHOGM is about 53 countries whose
a.CHOGs have been refusing i.to release the EPG report for their citizens to look at and ii.to appoint a Human Rights Commissioner
b.CMAG has been hiding its own report
c.Commonwealth Secretary General has been hiding reports from CMAG and CHOGs and
d.CHOGM and CMAG have not been addressing the deteriorating governance in many of the countries.

Sri Lanka has been violating many of the rights of all its citizens in addition to discriminating the ethnic minorities politically, economically, socially, culturally and environmentally.

By refusing to hold CHOGM in such a country a message can be sent to all CHOGs that it’s time the Commonwealth is serious about the governance in all these countries so that the two billion citizens begin to go in a better direction. CHOGM2013 is thus not only about Sri Lanka.

It’s naive to say that they can see what is on the ground during CHOGM2013. When hundreds of important (foreign government) visitors are there and when appropriate security is hyped up and when the govt has spent millions to gloss over the surface how much of the reality can Mr Hague & Co see? The occupying army will determine the truth seeping from the residents to the visitors.

In a ”normal” situation a foreign team must find out:
    A.
i.the large swathes (thousands of acres) of land grabbed over the last 20 or so years in Jaffna peninsula where the army has built tourist hotels and still demolishing houses to build more
ii.how many army and navy camps have been set up on the northern and eastern coastal areas in the last 53 months
iii.how many houses belonging to IDPs have been built in the last 53 months
iv.how many Sinhalese families from the South were settled in the North and the East with the help of government in the lands belonging to the IDPs
v.how many Buddha statues (not opposed to Buddhism but opposed to concrete structures that destroy the land required for plant and animal species) have been erected in public places
vi.unregulated sandmining from North and East coastal areas to end and regulation set in
vii. compensation for the land grabbed from the people in the North and the East as well as from the poor Sinhalese/Muslims/Tamils in the South reported in the media

    B.
get the President release the reports of 16 Commissions and Committees appointed by this government (on murders, corruption, abductions, disappearances, etc)

    C.
To charge or release thousands of Tamils detained in prisons for up to 20yrs

    D.
Investigate murders that were carried out in Colombo/Jaffna/Batticaloa and other areas outside the Vanni in i.2005-2008 and ii.up to 2005

    E.
take up the legal cases filed mostly by Tamils/Muslims and some others by Sinhalese that have been pending for years

    F.
Let in the 10 UNSRs waiting for invitations.

    …….
    ……………..

For.Secy Hague is wrong when he says that the Labour party sat on the sidelines. He has conveniently forgotten the rude and intemperate outburst of Gotya when David Milliband and Bernard Kouchner called to caution plead for the innocents caught up in the fighting.

Hague and his master Cameron will dance (like all politicians) to the tune in fashion. And right now there are many juicy pickings to be had in the continuing development of Sri Lanka.

Try to see beyond your nose for a change. The 95% working in the fried chicken western outlets of multinationals pay taxes and insurance and by October they get refunds of taxes (wherever they may be) paid depending on the threshold.
Now the CW is to stop India and China becoming the only super power in the world backed with a very strong economy. SL with a extreme right wing dictator is the best for a south china sea rendezvous 2014. The Chinese and Indians are smarter than you potty little bandits from Bihar.
What is SL’s main export item TEA that the Brits gave 200 years ago? Shamelessly SL send the multitasking women to camels to spread their legs and bring in foreign exchange. Then the sweat shops where women work in FTZ etc- Have a heart you have a mum too like us all though I too was born with a silver spoon.

”Plans for CHOGM on Sri Lankan soil continue under the primary case that Sri Lanka must be engaged by Commonwealth member-states to help her correct course. However, when a neighbor rapes a householder’s wife and kills his children, can he argue that the neighbor must be engaged? For minor offences such a principle would work, but not for the major ones that Sri Lanka stands accused of …. David Cameron says that he will push for accountability in Colombo, something, I note, he can do even from Downing Street. Indeed what better incentive for Sri Lanka to investigate current allegations than to be threatened with isolation? Verbal entreaties made while rewarding the Sri Lankan President with the chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, constitute active encouragement to do nothing” – Prof Ratnajeevan Hoole, 7 November 2013, https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/will-manmohan-singh-shake-hands-with-mahinda-rajapaksa/

did you read your report what do you are going to say
here you read what do you said
Four years later, Sri Lanka is still a country where civil society is suppressed, where NGOs and the media are routinely intimidated, where journalists and critics of the government have disappeared, and where no one has been held to account for alleged war crimes including rape and sexual violence. It is completely legitimate for there to be a debate about how we influence Sri Lanka so that these crimes and concerns are addressed.
then you have all the reasons to boycott
on other hand you want some entertaining with public money and help of sri lanka tell openly we are going to sri lanka for good relationship

“To be or not to be, that’s the question”. This infamous quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark often reminds us of the predicament faced by the heads of govts heading to Sri Lanka to grace the CHOGM event. The intense heat that had generated as a result of the debate should have dawned on Sri Lanka that no other country that had hosted the CHOGM event before had generated such an intense debate. That certainly places SL in an isolated corner.

PM Singh has to face a very hostile Tamilnadu which has even passed a unanimous resolution that, not only the PM, there should be no Indian participation at all. There have been wide ranging views expressed through the newsmedia, mostly supporting the PM’s participation, dismissing the Tamilnadu’s sentiment as political rhetoric.

Quite frankly, this quagmire is the direct result of UPA govt in general, and PM Singh’s failure to honour its own words. SL’s behaviour is only secondary to this episode. Since the end of the war, in what has been understood as phony from the beginning, the UPA govt had been playing hide-and-seek, upping the rhetoric of a saviour whenever it warrants. Such feigning has not gone unnoticed by Tamilnadu, that New Delhi behaves as a surrogate for SL.

The peak heat could have been totally avoided. Countless times it has assured that the SL regime would devolve powers to the Tamils. Even after holding the Presidential and local council elections, MR refused to hold the provincial council elections, as this would mean the TNA would take hold of the Council and would also mean the implementation of the 13A, including land and police powers. It is after intense pressure from all corners including the threat that this may even cost the CHOGM meet, that SL with no other way, held the NPC elections.

It will be dubious to assume or even say it aloud that SL failed in honouring its promises, denying the Tamils their legitimate political rights. It is New Delhi (ND) that failed the Tamils. For four years, it was playing “catching” with Colombo, sending emissaries, one after the other and playing fluke and havoc with the hopes and lives of the Tamils. Even now, although the NPC has taken place, the land and police powers are still missing. Like locking the stable after the horse has bolted, ND had many trumpcards to hold SL by the collar to honour the promises if it had really wanted to but it simply did not bother, and even allowed the SL regime to make ND the laughing stock. As much, in the same measure as Harper, can’t ND demand as to why even after four years SL has still not implemented the 13A in full? It won’t, because the intent was never there and it will never be there – that is what Tamilnadu has read and understood. Even after the bloody atrocities have surfaced, ND has been only giving “fartherly” advice to SL, and that too sadly after the pressure from Tamilnadu. It even had the cheek to go behind the scenes to grossly water-down the UNHRC resolution, sticking a needle into the gaping wound. Never mind about Tamil civilians, what about human beings? ND had made about every other move to protect a recalcitrant regime. What are the Tamils to make of all these? Karan Thapar may ask a shallow question – whether MR should kneel before India and the Tamils. Much as Karan’s stupidity is apparent – no, Karan the Tamils don’t want MR to kneel, just to deliver on his own promises. Are you ignorant of his promises or is it beyond you to understand just a promise to the whole world. He promised SG Ban on accountability and reconciliation but like a slippery snake he has been eluding from what he promised. Surely an “intelligent” person like Karan couldn’t have missed out on this.

If today SL is cheesed off with the unnecessary adverse attention on it, let us say that it entirely deserves it, just like New Delhi, it brought upon itself. Just like Karan who believes that his pedestal language can deliver the Tamilnadu votes to Congress, SL could have helped Congress in its search for the Tamilnadu votes but, alas, even SL believes Modi has a better chance than Mr Singh. Could that be the reason for playing games with the current ND regime? Just like the Iranian regime that played havoc with President Carter during the hostage taking drama but released them immediately after Reagan was elected, it looks like MR is a more seasoned politician than Mr Singh can ever be. The anger against the SL regime is apparent but the anger against ND is real.

Now Cameron and Hague are telling the whole world that they can do a better job where ND had failed. The former FM Milliband was already in the SL courtyard demanding to go to the “battlefield” but flatly refused by the SL regime and here we are the superheroes. Somehow either Cameron and Hague have either forgotten or pretend not to know that fateful attempt. Would anyone believe what they can do now with their personal presence in Lanka when they could not do or did not bother to do all these years? That is even a harder question than what Hamlet uttered.

International media and Human rights organizations have successfully, brought to the attention of the world, what happened in Sri Lanka during the conflict, and what is happening today, four years after the end of conflict in May 2009. The four short videos each less than five minutes, given below tells the story of victims and in some cases their recent experiences which do not augur well for the Tamils in Sri Lanka as Commonwealth Heads of Government meet 15th to 17th November 2013.

    1) On Wednesday 23 October 2013, BBC News:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24648595 on torture and sexual violence in Sri Lanka’s north.

    2) On Thursday 24 October 2013, BBC News:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24662898 on disappearances and the absence of media Freedom.

    3) On Thursday 24 October 2013, ITV News:
http://www.itv.com/news/2013-10-17/prime-ministers-sri-lanka-trip-defended/ on rape in Sri Lanka.

    4) On Thursday 31 October 2013 Fate of Tamil actress – chilling new evidence from Sri Lanka
    http://www.channel4.com/news/fate-of-tamil-actress-chilling-new-evidence-from-sri-lanka

Latest the “No Fire Zone” video of 51mins long was shown on 3rd November 2013 in the UK Channel 4. The movie was directed by Callum Macrae, the film was nominated for Noble peace prize. Beside other evidence available in public arena, this movie provides more solid evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity against the President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka as the Commander-in-chief of the Armed forces, Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa and other senior military officers of Sri Lanka. A few of the alleged war criminals are serving as Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Sri Lanka in Western capitals.

Crown Prince Charles representing the HM Queen Elizabeth II, as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations and Heads of Government of Commonwealth of Nations will be all shaking alleged war criminals hand, has this ever happened before? Who is responsible to this fiasco?

Alleged war criminal will take over as the “Chairperson-in-office” of commonwealth of Nations for the next 2 years. Should this be allowed to happen?

Yes but not Genocide because its reserved for the Jewish folk only and Chad because of its sweet Oil. 2-3 million were killed by the Germans, 2 million folk of Baharath lost their lives. Thanks to the 19 million Russians who lost their lives battering Hitler we speak English today- the Jewish folk stole the nuke process from Hitler who was manufacturing it but slowed down due to Russia. The sleeping giant was woken up with this process and with its immense wealth it was able to have umpteen no of centrifuges and make it before anyone else. Take some time to read europe since you live in europe.

This is the right thing to do Mr. William Hague. Visit Sri Lanka, see the situation yourself. LTTE has a strong local and international media. They used to sabotarge the image of the country in all possible ways. I was told by a friend of mine that most of these videos were made by LTTE many years back to give a bad image to the country and raise more funds from Tamil diaspora.

Despite of the comments in Mr. William’s message, Sri Lanka is now a peaceful place. I came to Colombo after graduation from university of Jafna from my home town Kilinochchi. I was taught from my childhood that Sinhalese people are our enemy. I was taught that we should fight to win our country. But today I’m working under a Sinhalese boss who can’t do anything without me. I learned that there is no need to fight for a country, the whole country is ours. This belongs to Sri Lankans. I did understood Sinhalese people deeply and I would tell the whole world that there is no difference between Tamils and Sinhalese, it is just we speak two languages and worship different gods. If we say we need Eelam, Sinhlese will say they need Ceylan. I later found that Ceylan became Eelam in our language. So we all refer to this whole country with different names.

What Sri Lanka now needs is peace. Nothing else. No more war. We need our children to live together as Sri Lankans. We don’t need another war. I kindly ask Tamil diaspora to forget the past, come to Sri Lanka, start industries in our areas and produce jobs for our people, build houses, hospitals, schools, etc…

Sri Lanka is the motherland of all of us. If we unit we can do a big thing. Let’s together develop this country.

“I kindly ask Tamil diaspora to forget the past, come to Sri Lanka, start industries in our areas and produce jobs for our people, build houses, hospitals, schools, etc”

Greatest happiness- Movement of the bowels!
Happiness can exist only in acceptance not by hoodwinking.

Hinayana Buddhist Thailand the only country that has never been ruled by foreigners gave the Japanese free passage to kill their neighbours during WW2. Many a Northern Ceylonese in the British Army fought at Rangoon and died for the cause of freedom from fascist.

Only your darling darling Japanese bend over when they greet you and kiss you with dosh. Why so? Strange: Japan has never formally acknowledged its military aggression. Nor has the Japanese nation publicly apologized for its crimes against humanity. Yes, the Japanese butchered millions of unarmed Asian men, women, and children. But the Japanese also butchered hundreds of thousands of military and civilian personnel who were not of Asian descent.

    14th Feb – wasn’t that Independence day???
Even though all the shops closed at 8.00pm and most of them didn’t open on the weekends, somehow we didn’t starve!WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! Many of our mothers didn’t work and we survived on one salary… BUT there was always food on the table.Colleges were mostly unisex – but, this did not affect us psychologically or emotionally, because we always managed to find girl friends & boy friends. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law & we were punished a second time when we got home!We didn’t get air guns or air hockey on our 10th birthdays, just a new one set of clothes on special occasions (birthday, Aluth Avurudu, Easter, Christmas).

Like the Yankees say deal with it we trust in God!
