A Land For A Colossus

By Ravi Perera

The dictator is overthrown and more than half the people rejoice. The dictator had filled the jails and emptied the treasury. Like many dictators, he hadn’t begun badly. He had wanted to make his country great. But, he wasn’t himself a great man; and perhaps the country couldn’t be made great. Seventeen years pass. The country is still without great men; the treasury is still empty; and the people are on the verge of despair” ~ Argentina and the Ghost of Eva Peron,1972-1991—VS Naipaul

When at a loose end I am in the habit of pulling a book out of my bookshelf to browse through. I do it with both pleasure and profit; passing time gives perspective, offering new insights to books read long ago or casually put aside then. While reading I also tend to look up on the author, the times and the culture he lived in.

There is no uniformity in literature, although its themes are universal; passion, love, jealousy, betrayal, loss, power, corruption being common themes. Yet, People have evolved differently, with different sensitivities and varying standards, each country’s writings reflects its uniqueness. Clearly, the language a people think in, also fashions their literature, why they chose that theme, why they write in that manner. What may sound overly flowery or bombastic to a more precise language maybe acceptable writing in a more loose or florid way of thinking.

I thought that the book I recently pulled out requires this attempt at explanation. TDSA Dissanayaka’s “JR Jayewardene of Sri Lanka” (August 1977) is neither good literature nor dispassionate history, belying its title, it is not even biographical writing. The author perhaps did not even aspire to achieve any of these things. Enthralled by the unprecedented victory of the JR Jayewardena led UNP over the pathetically failed SLFP government of Srima Bandaranaike (1970-77), the then forty-year-old author exults in the victory and the preceding election campaign in which he seems to have played a secondary role.

Not only avowedly partisan, the book is extremely hyperbolic in that typical Sri Lankan manner of writing. The 1977 electoral victory is offered as an epic; good vs evil, wisdom vs inanity, ability vs incompetence, honesty vs corruption; the deliverance of a nation. In the presentation of the UNP leadership, we are left wondering whether little Sri Lanka in 1977 had cloned all the famous world leaders; philosopher kings, warrior leaders, peerless managers, penetrating minds, standard setters and moral compasses; very many of them author’s ‘good friends’, and old boys of Royal College

There is nothing to show why the author thought so, what these men read or studied, what they wrote or mused upon. How the author came to his conclusions, how he deduced the motives and imperatives that actuated the leadership remains unexplained.

Apparently, these men, with their gently protruding paunches, globular covetous eyes, thick weak mouths; hair dyed jet black, expensive Swiss watch on their wrists: self-satisfied, bending everything to suit their ends, have more to them than meets the eye! Going by the tone of the narration, the 1977 leadership invented capitalism, were the first to think of liberalisation, were virtuoso economic managers, wise constitution makers and were also just and fair to a fault.

These are the years which saw an impressive re-emergence of Asia, several countries making the long jump from the Third to the First World. In comparison, Sri Lankan social and economic statistics of the era only reflects mediocrity, never showing signs of a barrier breaking take off. The author who is introduced as an international civil servant, seems to have been blinded by the razzle dazzle of Sri Lankan ground politics; the din, the roughhouse tactics, cheap little conspiracies and tricks, the pretentions to leadership!

However, today’s reader has the invaluable guidance of recent history, the near fifty years since the events of 1977 to measure against the author’s then judgement of men and matters. This half a Century has only shown the poverty of the country’s leadership, their venality, predatory ways, moral corruption and the skill deficiency.

The book is revealing not only of a warped political culture, but also an ingrained poverty of spirit, though both are widely promoted, interpreted as admirable features especially by the so called elite classes! What a dumfounded elite endorses, the rest accept as a standard. It is troubling that people who think, talk and write in this maudlin style are in national politics, and as it happens, in charge of the country’s affairs.

We will quote randomly from the 175-page book –

On the dust cover of the book is a blurb from the printer “This book honours the Prime Minister (JR Jayewardene) but is no paean of praise. It is an in-depth study, yet is very readable. The publisher claims this book will be the first ever best-seller in English, Sinhala and Tamil. The readers will endorse that view”

“Three score and ten years ago when JR Jayawardene was born into a distinguished family, the astrologers predicted that he would become a just and fair ruler”-Prologue

“Thus, when those who had plotted to end his political life came to him with peace offerings he responded with cordiality, devoid of trust “-upon Jayewardene becoming leader of the UNP in 1973-(P. 3)

“Hence by a process of elimination JR Jayewardene concluded …. that the major flaw of the UNP was in its policy, the UNP just did not reflect the aspirations of the masses…. that it was out of step with contemporary times” (P.6)

“JR Jayewardene was convinced that capitalism was at the end of its period of usefulness in Sri Lanka as the capitalist class, both foreign and local were parasites on society” (P.35)

“After the out pouring of grief at the funeral of Dudley Senanayake in 1973, the toiling masses showed a marked affinity towards the UNP. There was no corresponding trend in the capitalist class who were busy manipulating quotas, permits, tenders and contracts and inveigling themselves into positions of influence with the Bandaranaike and Ratwatte families. JR Jayewardene looked upon them with supreme contempt and saw no reason why the UNP should permit such vermin to thrive” (P37)

“ Quite clearly  Lake House ,which looked upon its own role as some God-given right, had to be checked especially because  400,000 or more shares of a total 600,000 shares were owned by one family, the Wijewardenes… NM Perera  read out in  the Parliament the most damning evidence  of a racket  in foreign exchange  involving  several key  directors of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon, all members of the Wijewardena family… JR Jayewardene in several conversations with me before and after 1973 was critical of  how his kinsmen handled Lake House” (P.50 &51)

“JR Jayewardene publicly stated that he would end family ‘bandyism’ when the next UNP government established through his own example of not extending political patronage to his relatives and by ensuring that his cabinet ministers and high officials strictly followed his example” (P.59)

“Such are the facts of life in foreign affairs, a fool’s paradise in which Srima Bandaranaike revelled and a field according to JR Jayewardene should occupy nothing more than a position of low priority in any good government in Sri Lanka. Jayewardene was astonished in 1973 when Srima Bandaranaike made a successful bid to stage the fifth non-aligned summit in Colombo at a time when people were seen digging into dustbins for food, when bread queues were longer than bus queues” (P. 66 & 67)

“Such excellent candidates picked by JR Jayewardene included Nissanka Wijeratne, Ronnie de Mel, TB Werapitiya, Lalith Athulathmudali, all top professional with elitist backgrounds, Keerthi Abeywickrema a Village Council Chairman, Wijeratne Banda and Sarathchandra Rajakaruna, both of peasant stock. It was indeed a pleasure to observe them campaign” (P.82)

“Traditionally, the UNP was devoid of brain power, talented youth and new ideas…. JR Jayewardene is a staunch old Royalist and lustily sings ‘the school of our fathers’ the Royal college anthem whenever he has an occasion to do so. Like thousands who have had the good fortune of being educated at Royal, he refers to it as the best school of them all, but his fondness for old Royalists in the UNP circles went to the extent of being politically unwise,” (P.83)

“As 1976 drew to a close it was evident that the UNP and the SLFP had interchanged their traditional roles. The SLFP was intoxicated with power and the UNP was trying hard to be humble; the SLFP was ridden with nepotism, the UNP had taken steps to eradicate it” (P. 86)

The Police was no different then, “…The following day shortly after dawn a CID raiding party of 26 officers under Superintendent Gunawardena with armed escorts and police dogs swooped on ‘Sri Kotha’ and after an overzealous inquiry found little evidence, but for reasons known only to them took UNP trade Union leader Yapa into custody under emergency regulations. (P.101)

When the author arrived from Hawaii to work for JR Jayewardene on assignment his mother rushed to Jayewardene wailing “His father ended up in the magazine jail, his friend (Lalith Athulathmudali) is now in the remand jail and he will himself end up in some jail” (P. 102)

“During the entire campaign JR Jayewardene ate very little. He had a thambili in the morning before a light breakfast and ate no rice whatsoever at lunch or dinner. However, he ate cadju nuts in large quantities” For some reason the author has placed an asterisk after the word ‘thambili’ adding a foot note at the bottom of the page – ‘note for foreign readers-water of the young coconut’. In the book there are hundreds of Sri Lankan names, abbreviations and references not readily understood by a foreign English reader, remaining unexplained. The author however has chosen to explain what a king coconut (thambili) means (P.117)

“By that time the residence of JR Jayewardene was packed with visitors. A few were his guests. Many more were charlatans joining the bandwagon” – the night of the elections when the UNP was sweeping the country (P. 131)

Even the printer was moved to join in the collective adulation, remarking in a footnote “As the author has omitted such references, we feel obliged to add that he spent ten months living in huts and hovels in every electorate and travelled only by public transport to obtain first hand reports. This was a new dimension of the UNP campaign, a service which we are personally aware was much appreciated by the Prime Minister” (P.106)

“Pursuant to his election pledges, JR Jayewardene has given the highest priority to ushering in a just and free society. He has extended his defeated foes magnanimity unprecedented in recent times…..Thus has begun a new era in Sri Lanka, under a Colossus that bestrides the contemporary scene”- Epilogue (P.140)

Ravi Perera has humour and Sarcasm in equal measure in this essay.

The essayist has stopped short of saying that by the time JR let go of the Reigns of Power in the late 80s he had eaten the whole country!

I suppose this book fits into our tradition of premature hype, particularly with politicians.
There was , for example, Maithri’s daughter writing about her Janadhipathi Thaaththa. I hear he coughed up his 100 million fine eventually.
Then there were two “pandan-karayas” C.A.Chandraprema and Kamal Gunaratna fawning over Gota, the worst nincompoop ever to rule this country, That didn’t end well.
At least JR didn’t have to run away.
Authors should wait at least five years after a ruler has left office to write biographies.

I say OC, you are such a bias ,one track mind !

The essay, which is very good, is talking about the overrated JR, who driven by his bloated ego introduced a new constitution and also economic changes, neither of which he obviously did not fully understand .

JR was no constitution maker nor was he anywhere near Lee Kuan Yew, he wanted to imagine himself to be. The stupid followers just put him up , as they did with SWRD, Srima, Dudley,MR, Gota, the whole lot of Stupid conmen. People get the leaders they deserve. I think AKD will also end up like that .

OC ,in your haste to divert attention from JR, you compare him to Sirisena ( a Gramasevaka and small time crook) and Gota ( a low IQ man of a very dubious family, with a middle rank career in a rather doubtful army) I think if Sri Lankan army has to fight a foreign army from any where in Asia, the war will be over in a few hours. Fighting foreign enemies is the primary duty of a army.

By comparing your semi divine JR to these lowly characters you are actually telling a truth

        JR was nothing much.

I don’t know about JR’s ego, but the man definitely had a plan to completely defeat the LTTE, unlike most of those who came after him. It was called “Operation Vadamarachchi: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadamarachchi_Operation/.” This was a highly successful operation that would have prevented the civil war, had it succeeded. It ended early because of Indian intervention (paripu drop, Indo-Lankan Accord, and other such nonsense). Both Gothabaya and SF were part of this operation, in which Prabhakaran barely escaped capture. Those who say Gotha ran away from the country are Ranil apologists and/or delusional refugees living in Germany. The worst time for the Army was under CBK. She requested India to intervene in case the LTTE captured Jaffna. And later made a plan with Norway to permanently divide the country.

Certainly, using a 10-to-1 advantage to win against mostly schoolboys is hardly a great “victory “.

“By comparing your semi divine JR to these lowly characters you are actually telling a truth JR was nothing much.”

In retrospect, J.R.J. did a lot better than any other leader, he was the first in the geographical region to start with open economic policies. India followed suit. However, successive SLFP led governments since 1994 have not been able to adapt it to a Sri Lankan model.

If they had been able to do so, things would have worked out well for the human and physical development of the country.

Unfortunately, there are many more culprits in our nation than there are progress makers in this country.
They have their own kind of fear (unique angst) that is unthinkable for India to ignore about other communities.
That has stuck Sri Lanka in its economic evolution, and also the fact that decade driven civil war, stood on our way.
          .
But the next government, not the current one, will be a successful government, because AKD-led groups have already proven that their theories do not work in practice when they are in power. Not a single promise made by them is fullfilled by them as of today.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaKeNdf7vmI
          .
The people will finally understand that AKD-led groups are THE REAL BARRIER that stand on our way.

As I write this, I am reminded of what RW told the crowd at his pre-election rally about the future of this country. Vote for AKD if the country is to deepen with various problems, or vote for his party to continue with his IMF recommendations.

Our self-proclaimed scholar, Deepthi S (thought to be a coconut, being caught in UK bounderies), is an informal about Sri Lankan politics. She is not consistent about her opinion either.

She is someone who looks at nothing, but wastes our time on her hobby activities. Unfortunately, many in our homeland are like that. They do not dream of a better future for all, and are also not consistent.
            – 2019 – 2022- Wasting time with Gota (UNP and SJB warned the nation)
            – November 2024 – November 2029 – AKD will be another waste of time (100 days for no achievement other than disrupting the old order) (UNP and SJB warned enough about the current situation).

As per current reports, the AKD-led JVP leadership is now leaning towards giving in to Chinese moves rather than India. If AKD nods his head to all what China suggest during his official visit next week, things will be linked with a big impact as India fears for their national security through Sri Lanka with China. SRIALNKA should not be a football between China and India.

          Deepthi,
You are calling Gota “a stupid conman ” and a low IQ man of a very dubious family, with a middle rank career in a rather doubtful army. Your bf Lester thinks he was some kind of IT genius, almost as clever as you.

In reality you have about 100 creepy guys among 24 million

            Those your low tactics.

We are individuals, we cherish our individuality, we enjoy our freedom, we don’t have a theory and no devious plan to undermine Sri Lanka or its government.

We don’t follow Ranil ,Prabakaran,MR or AKD. We don’t have an agenda

We can see through your perfidy, enjoying all the freedom the country gives you and using that to support terrorism.Your relatives in Europe have brought monkey habits to Europe, loud religions and dishonest mind-sets

Just because Lester may agree with me some times he does not become a boy friend. That is your typical low mentality.

A few days ago, our good LS found a fake GOTA qualification list that was not verified by any fellow student.

They had also believed that any diploma holder could qualify for a Masters degree… who do they think they are to deceive this nation that supposedly has a 95% literacy rate in their school education (that’s similar to that of Singapore or Germany).

Most of the turbulence in the history of the country can be traced to one family: Bandaranaike. Swabasha (which some people claim is racist) was the brainchild of SWRD. Sirima’s nationalization led directly to the JVP insurgency. CBK’s incompetency allowed separatists to grab large chunks of territory. At least Rajapakse ended the war within 5 years of becoming President. You can talk about corruption, but virtually all politicians are corrupt to some degree. Rajapakse did not create or foment the ethnic issue that caused a civil war and eventually bankruptcy. The credit there goes to Bandaranaike family, the Tamil Diaspora (Vellalars) who financed guerilla warfare, and India. In fact, if CBK had shown any kind of leadership capability, Raja could not have won the election. Both MaRa and Gotha were chosen when the country was in a major crisis. The UNP has not won a Presidential election since 1988, what does that tell you? After JR, the people have no trust in the faux “Opposition.” There is a very good reason for this: the face of the Opposition for the last 3 decades or so has been Ranil! Knowing that the UNP has no credibility, AKD very cleverly created NPP.

Tamils in Colombo overwhelmly voted for JR including me. But he turned against them in 1977 & 1983.
!983 violence made Tamils to leave the country. Thank goodness for it they propered in the countries they settled in by working hard. Their children too got good education and are now useful members/citizens of these countries. Reconciliations or reparations for the STATE SPONSORED atrocities has NOT happened YET.

      Desperate DS,
      .
Sad but true, if anything comes out of your garbage pit, it is like hollywood’s wild fire, and hurt many of us making us fronzen at least for some minutes.

Thus, I am now practising some strategies to ignore your thoughts.

I can’t do it with the comments posted by OC, NV, SJ, MF, HT, LS, JIT and a few others. I have repeated this an x-time, but your little head seems incapable of understanding it.
Some Japanese professors said it out loud, if Sri Lankans would come down to earth and see who they really are, they could surpass their human and physical development faster than any other developing nation.

However, I do not respect anyone that disrepect others like you are upto. I also respect minority rights.
      .
I respect not only OC but anyone with some real information. I know that even LS who have lived in our motherland for less than 4 years have much more information than you who live as freelancers in the UK.
All in all, yours proved us as of today, what kind of characters are born to fail on this planet.

      Deepthi Silva,

Do you know what they say about expired food? Human brain capacity is similar. Apparently it peaks at around age 30. After that the rot starts to set in. For some, it’s more severe than others. We can still “learn” – the brain can process new information – but the cognitive process is not so linear. Now imagine those who learned very little from 1 < age < 30. For this subset, there is no hope. They are the ones who vote for Trump, or the codgers stuck in an infinite loop of porno & viagra (bad combo!).

        4

        Lester the joker,
“They are either Trump voters or codgers who are stuck on unlimited porn and Viagra (bad combination!).”

Nutrition is not the only thing that works for strong brain development. There are multifaceted reasons behind it. Btw, Why don’t we focus on our problems, but on Trump supporters? Trump’s is connected with ‘white supremacy’ and the real racial problem between others living in that country.

In Sri Lanka, many of them are so stupid than it seems unlikely that they supported the Rajapaksas for all three of their terms. If it weren’t for the Rajapaksas, things in our homeland wouldn’t be so notorious.

Even the youth learn it from the way they build their own kingdom by spreading blatant lies about their abilities and capabilities, even though their patriotism is a myth to me. The collapse of the LTTE organization in June 2009 was the main reason for their uprooting. This Mr. Fonseka explained more or less, but those rogue Rajapaksas made it a lucrative business repeating that due to their love for the nation.
If they truly loved the nation, no leader would have looted even the last coin of the nation after the war. Check will you the assets of MaRa prior to 2005 and then what he has earned since then… that will clear everyone s doubt about the honesty of the bugger.

            OC,
What happened to our Bandarawela Satyaguru? I’m a little worried.

Why are we only busy with Desperate DS? Isn’t that a waste of time? They fooled the people into thinking it was “another waste of time”, so they elected the “Mr. Right of the Nation” as President – who was mocked for saying he could raise $40 billion (the country’s total debt) like a peanut? Now, he’s ready to run away saying “Eureka Eureka”……
