A Looming Confrontation: Will It Be Bloody?

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The economy has failed and failed miserably. No amount of camouflaging with massaged statistics and confidence boosting oratory can hide the extent of economic calamity facing the nation and its millions of ordinary citizens. Even the credit over success in controlling the Covid pales into insignificance in the face of worsening economic crisis. Shortages in essential household items such as rice, milk powder, sugar, condiments, gas fuel, and so on are affecting practically every consumer. Enough had been said already by economists, administrators and journalists about the underlying causes of this economic mess.

But there is no doubt that when future economic historians begin to analyze the reasons for the current crisis, they would find its true origins go back to the civil war and its unaffordable cost. It was the sheer magnitude of the financial burden carried from that war combined with endemic corruption and waste at official levels that snowballed over the years and now punishing the economy with vengeance. Let history has the final say on this issue.

For the time being, the immediate causes for the disaster are clear. Depleting foreign reserves, depreciating currency, rising inflation, unpredictable increase in prices of consumer goods, falling government revenue and widening trade deficit are here to stay. Borrowing from friendly countries and currency swaps are band aid solutions to a malignant cancer that needs surgery.

Incidents of poverty and misery not to mention suicides are on the rise. Farmers, teachers, trade unionists, university academics, salaried officials and self-employed are all coming out to the street to protest and demand deliverance from crushing economic pressures. All that the government could offer is for the Minister of Finance to advise people to eat manioc if rice is not available and learn to live with escalating prices. How much of belt tightening does this minister expect from an already undernourished people? His forthcoming budget is undoubtedly going to be disappointing to ordinary consumers, because the treasury is virtually bankrupt to offer any handouts or concessions. However, there will be enough in it for the minister and his ilk to earn from kickbacks and cuts when infrastructure projects are allocated in the name of economic development.

True, the pandemic caused word wide disruption to economic growth and living conditions, but what made it worse in Sri Lanka was uncoordinated and unplanned economic policies emanating from thought bubbles of a daydreamer President schooled in militarism and thinks that his orders are enough to produce results. How else could one explain the overnight ban on imports of turmeric, palm oil and chemical fertilizer and leave their immediate users high and dry without any alternative? Because of this shortsightedness, households, bakeries, confectioners and farmers were caught totally unprepared and are still seething with anger.

The problem with the President is that he does not understand that an economy is like a human body where a wound on one part spreads pain to the entire. Linkage effects of economic decisions should be thought out first before introducing any reform or change. The sum total of all theses impulsive decisions is public anger and frustration over the regime. Protests are increasing and government’s popularity is crumbling. The thousands who are queueing in front of foreign embassies seeking visas to migrate tell the sorry tale of this country. If we cannot export goods let us export people, seems to be the policy of this regime. Shamelessly, the Foreign Minister welcomes that migration.

There is no hiding the fact that an open confrontation with the regime is looming. But whether it would be bloody depends on the shape and size of the confrontationists.

Attempts are being made by backers of the regime to deflect peoples’ anger and drive it along a different direction. The latest gimmick by Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint his eleventh task force to prepare a plan of action to translate One Country One Law slogan into practical reality is an act of deflection. What was mischievous in that appointment was (a) the choice of an ex-prisoner and street fighter who happens to be a Buddhist monk to chair the TP. It is obvious that the monk’s immediate attention would be to do away with the controversial Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act, which in any case under review by the Minister of Justice. The President is well aware of this monk’s anti-Muslim credentials. And (b) the inclusion of four Muslims into that group, who belong not to the majority orthodox Suni stream of Islam, but to a couple of obscure Sufi sects. Monk Gnanasara on few occasions had expressed his support to Sufism, but how much knowledge does this man possess on this subject is another story. Anyhow, this TF and its membership are a clear act of provocation. Above all, it is the timing of this appointment that makes GR’s real intention clear.

He and his regime came to power on the back of 2019 Easter massacre. True, it was committed by a lunatic fringe from the Muslim community. However, there is great suspicion especially within the Catholic community that one or two from the regime itself might have masterminded that horror. The fact that President GR is not making the report of his own Commission’s Investigation available to the public adds credence to that suspicion. Be that as it may, having come to power by exploiting one security issue, it is possible that the President may be looking for a second one to keep the regime in power. His Lieutenant monk Gnanasara’s BBS are quite capable of manufacturing another security issue by creating splits within the Muslim community. Otherwise, why bring in a controversial minority sect to decide on a matter that affects an entire community? If any internal fissure within the community ends in open violence, that would be enough for GR to make it a security threat and capitalize on it. One would hope that Muslims understand this ploy and take extra guard to prevent such eventuality.

In all probability however, the looming confrontation would not be religious or ethnic this time but economic in orientation. Also, it cannot be put down this time by hallucinating the Sinhala community with doses of communal narcotic. One cannot fool all the people all the time. Whether the final confrontation would be bloody or not depends on the size and organizational strength of the confrontationists. President GR with some foresight has fed and pampered his military to come to his aid when needed. To him the hour of need is fast approaching. However, history shows that in front of an ocean of unarmed people military weapons automatically lose firepower. The mighty armies of the Sha of Iran and President Marcos are two instances in our lifetime where tanks and guns were of no use in front of hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians. After all, those who drive those tanks and carry those weapons are also humans and not robots. However, the challenge is to bring those millions under an organizational umbrella. Can the country’s opposition and trade unions duplicate what an Ayatollah and a Cardinal did?

Even if they unite, nothing will change. They will split after the election and confront each other.

That’s what happened in 2015. Within 3 months of toppling Rajapaksas the winning coalition fell into their racist tribal holes back again.

People in the island are inherently divided along ethnic lines. No future for them as one nation.

3 nations is the only solution.

“future economic historians begin to analyze”

The crisis is not economic …… but human and man-made ……..

The history of Sri Lanka for the foreseeable future is none other than the history of the Rajapakse clan …………… their beginning and their end ……

The rest are just bit players …….. supporting actors …….. in the movie ………

Not for the first time, in human history …………how did people come to believe that a clan of humans could walk on water?

That’s in the hand and the skill of the person who writes the script.

      Gatam,

Your idea of splitting the country into three may amuse few, but when the divided three nations divide themselves into further threes and thirties then only many would realise the fundamental mistake of being divided. Already divided countries are seeking opportunities to merge again and walk and work together. DON’T WE HAVE CAPACITY TO LEARN FROM OUTSIDE AND IMPLEMENT IT WITHIN.

Cugan, Cant Nirupama do a charitable deed and gift that account mentioned here to save her mother nation from disaster. Why cannot each Rajapakse bring back one off shore account as a charitable act to save the very nation that has exalted them as kingdom family. How much other royalty do for their own kingdoms like the queen so respected in UK.

“…….reasons for the current crisis, they would find its true origins go back to the civil war and its unaffordable cost….”

No Ameer, that is not what actually killed the SL economy. It was the daylight mass loot carried out by the Rajapaksa gang for 10 years that bankrupted the economy, ably aided by China. Historically, we didn’t have much problems paying WB or IMF or ADB super low interest (0.1 – 1.5%) and 30 year grace period loans back even in the worst times of the war. We would have wiped out all our war related cost and paid off loans on time with the booming garment exports and tourism money alone. All that was exhausted in a decade by the rogues appointed by a crowd of super fools hypnotized by prince Diyasena and/or Dutugamunu. They gave immense power to these rogues, who in return put the treasury unto their private wallets and then borrowed billions of $$$ @ 7 – 10% with no grace period for utterly useless, non productive while elephant projects that poured billions of commissions to their numbered overseas accounts. Now cometh the payback time!! Enjoy!!!

Even if the current regime is thrown out kicking & screaming, is there a credible replacement? It is most likely that one corrupt & incompetent regime will be replaced by another. Premadasa jnr., despite his international academic credentials, has not carved out a name for himself & no achievement to call his own during all his years in politics. AKD, although, has been highlighting corruption & mismanagement, has questions about his own wealth, which he seems to ignore, instead of clearing his name. Has he got skeletons in his cupboard as well? Furthermore, the socialist JVP parliamentarians have not refused the generous perks, including, duty free vehicle permits, which are paid for by the public. The opposition have been vocal about the corruption & mismanagement but nothing has come out of it. Will the corruption allegations even be investigated, albeit, whitewashed, if a new regime takes over? I don’t think so.

It happened in African & South American countries ruled by despots, its happening now in Lebanon & going to happen in SL. These are countries where the wealth has been embezzled by the politicians & their cronies & its citizens left destitute.

The JVP leader has declared on numerous ocassions of his willingness to transfer the skeletons in his cupboard to anyone who is successful in finding them for him to no avail. All the perks that they enjoy are turned around to the party coffers and for the record they are the richest party in this cursed isle according to the declarations .

Raj-UK; He has on several occasions called up on anyone to come up with valid proof of the skeletons of his in cupboards but there is no credible evidence so far, he has even promised to hand over any such assets to anyone successful in providing same. The JVP uses the money that it raises through the sale of whatever priviledges for the upliftment of facilities in schools hospitals and other public institutes.

….”they would find its true origins go back to the civil war and its unaffordable cost.”….
This is only true to an extent over 28 years, but the real catastrophe, was not making use of the opportunities after 2009 to reconstruct the economy by pragmatic economic management and set in motion a proper reconciliation process to get the benefit of unity in the country. In the euphoria of the end of hostilities, investments in white elephants on borrowed money to satisfy the ego of a family, and money spent on playgrounds to airports were named for them.
We have not yet, have had, any worthwhile returns on any of those profligate “investments” six years on, but still need to service these loans by considerable strain on our reserves.

Former President CBK s son and daughter set examples to entire srilankens. They had no show off life styles on the tax payers funds. But tasteless Rajapakshes with no decent upbringing continue any unethical acts in today s context. 🐃🐕😥🐃🐕😥🐃🐕😥🐃🐕😥

The problem with this government is the philosophy of the Rajapaksa family.
As the CT articles witnesses, almost all of the Rajapakse Family members have either murder accusation, corruption, or bother and they feel confident of keeping people around them who committed more crimes and corruption and thereby they depend on the mighty of the Rajapakse Family. This is the biggest change from the rest of the governments and elected dectators came and gone in Sri Lankan politics.
But this time, unlike 2015, they are being exposed a lot. All their plan went out of their control and the curse of many innocents started to play on their dreamed life. Pandora papers came as the last blast against bringing black money immediately into the country. International eyes are zoomed in and zoomed out heavily on how this regime is going to behave.
But, the Rajapakse family was able to discredit and show the military as a sign of failure by letting Shavendra and many other retired military men in several positions. Now he wanted to show the same with Buddhist monks and I think that’s good in a way, and by the time the Rajapakse family escapes from the country both the Military and Monks will be at the losing ends as their failure too exposed.

  • 17
    1

The utter silence of prominent Buddhist monks in the country over the appointment of Gnanasara monk to oversea the rule of law exposes the compromises they may have made with this Rajapakse family.
But the risk is these military officers and monks could be used against minority communities and any dissents in majority communities. Greece Yaka, White Van, Several mob attacks on minority communities villages including their businesses and religious places, and easter Sunday attack related matters such as refusing to find the mastermind, refusing to reveal the volumes of commission reports on the Easter Sunday attack, and releasing of convicted murderers and providing public office for them, and many more reveals the attitude of the family.

Yes, I agree, it is affecting many did not get COVID-19, including highest in SL, seem to be affected/influenced mentally!

’’AFTER YOU CHASE US AWAY, WHY ELECT US AGAIN?’’
Challenging the intelligence of 6.9 million mainly Sinhala Buddhists (by GR’s own admission, taking oaths) admitted voted for him to be elected, in asking that question and admonishing them because they have forgotten of what happened 2010 to 2015’
Saw comments to the effect that they will not dream of making that mistake again.
These are Viyathmaga, Eliya, enlightened intelligentsia, ruling country and all the voters are the Modayo!
What a joke, Head of State depleting his vote base!!
Gone on to explain, that they should not elect the same people of the group that has failed – meaning Yahapalanaya, a coalition of UNP and SLFP mainly, but failing to realise that it applies to this current government and the one from 2010 to 2015!!!

    *
If the SLPP secured mainly SB votes on both occasions how did the Easter bombings influence that vote bank?
The catholic vote has since the mid-60s been divided, and the Sinhala Catholics over 75% of all Catholics will be 4.7% of the population. The pro-UNP bias still holds.
So, even a full swing in the Catholic vote would have been of the order of 2%.
So much for the back of 2019 Easter massacre.

The Rajapaksas for sure could do all they can do to incite communal riots which is the only way to continue their regime. In addition, they plan to revive the LTTE too.
While the military fought against LTTE terrorists under the leadership of one Rajapaksa, other Rajapaksas have passed war information to the LTTE which is the reason over 29,000 servicemen lost limbs at the last phase of the war itself.
Not only that, years later the Rajapaksas cut a deal with the LTTE diaspora to keep LTTE alive. Otherwise, after Prabhakaran’s death, the LTTE should have defunct like other leaderless terrorist outfits. But it didn’t happen with the LTTE. It is very much alive overseas with the support of the Rajapaksas.

    • 2
      7

I express my strongest opposition to LTTE supporter, terrorist financier and LTTE fund-holder Allirajah Subaskaran’s visit to Sri Lanka. Law authorities should answer why he was not arrested at the airport under the PTA?
In 2018, when President Sirisena appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as the PM, Allirajah Subaskaran lit the entire Jaffna area, including University premises, to commemorate Prabhakaran’s Birthday on November 26 (Mahavir Day). Why is he in Sri Lanka just 3 weeks before this year’s Mahavir Day?
LTTE supporter Subaskaran may be Mahinda’s and Namal’s guest. But the Police and the Military should not allow him to commemorate Prabhakaran’s Birthday and make a speech in Jaffna.
I am sure Allirajah Subaskaran is in Sri Lanka to personally commemorate Prabhakran’s Birthday this year.
We need to check whether Namal Rajapaksa has arranged any sports games to coincide with the Mahavir Week that are participated by Tamil youth.
As anyone can observe, the Rajapaksas have brought down large crowds to the street to protest against ‘their own government’.
I WARN all those who take part in protests in Colombo and suburbs, stay away from streets while Allirajah Subaskaran is in town and especially, a week before and after Prabhakaran’s Birthday. You never know.

        Champa ,
The LTTE are freemasons just like the Sinhala leaders.
The rivalry is purely staged to keep the public distracted, while a small number of rich sinhalese, tamils, muslims etc, work together behind the scenes, filling each others pockets, hoarding resources, grabbing land etc at the expense of everyone else.
There are many dishonest masonic journalists who are involved in keeping the people blind from the real truth.
You are right that protests are often staged or infiltrated by government agents. This is true world wide.

Of course, Allirajah Subaskaran is an LTTE black money launderer and an active LTTE supporter. It was not university students, it was Allirajah Subaskaran who funded the event to commemorate terrorist leader Prabhakaran’s birthday on November 26, 2018 by lighting the entire Jaffna area and even when Prabhakaran was alive his birthday wasn’t celebrated that grand. The Police or the Military didn’t take any action to stop the commemoration of a ferocious terrorist leader.
The previous slave government had an open alliance with the LTTE diaspora. That was one of the major reasons all law abiding citizens wanted Mahinda back, only to find out he has more connections with the LTTE diaspora than even the previous slave government.
          .
Given the history of the LTTE supporter Allirajah Subaskaran, I have every right to be suspicious about his visit to Sri Lanka weeks prior to Prabhakaran’s birthday. According to news reports, he has come through the VIP lounge. That means, his luggages was not checked. It is possible that he came in a chartered flight with others. VIP facilities at the airport could have been accorded to him on the instructions of Gotabhaya. How dare he cut deals with LTTE supporters.

        Hi Champa,
This seems a new alignment of thought from you and I am indeed surprised!
Reference, “I WARN all those who take part in protests …….while Allirajah Subaskaran is in town………….. Prabhakaran’s Birthday. You never know”.
        May I ask why?
Sort of, “WARNING” us to confine ourselves to our Homes? SL is a Free, Democratic, Socialist country? Why cannot we move freely?
Is another MM at work for another massacre?
Why and what do you think will happen if we go out?
Who is this Allirajah Subaskaran? What is he got to do?
Is this something akin to the plot of 2017, where it was alleged that, then HE MS and GR ‘in one go’ by the DIG-TID post haste home without an inquiry, who was arrested and exonerated or the CID sleuths could not be smart enough to find any clue at all!!!
Then the Easter Sunday Carnage, killing 268 people!
Prabhakaran is dead and you think his Remembrance Day commemoration, would reincarnate him and come after those who vanquished him in 2009!!!
So if you have useful information not in the public domain, please inform the authorities duly to take timely action.

If you read my comment under reference again, you will find answers to your questions.
          .
As for your blah blah blah, if you read my previous comments (since 2015) against the LTTE, the LTTE diaspora and their attempts to revive the LTTE with the support of LTTE sympathizers, you will see my strong opposition to terrorism and its supporters is NOT a new alignment of thought and that there is nothing to be surprised.
Whenever I see Tamils and Catholics take terrorism against their community to the UNHRC, HR groups, Pope and what-not, I wonder why didn’t we, Sinhalese Buddhists, do the same and seek justice to the victims of the Sinhalese Buddhist community?
Starting from Kent farm massacre to Colombo suicide air raid numbering 39 LTTE massacres that killed tens of thousands of Siinhalese Buddhists including Buddhist monks, children and pregnent women, how many LTTE terrorists were prosecuted?
It is time we demand the Rajapaksas to appoint Special Presidential Commissions to investigate each and every massacre and bring justice to victims of Sinhalese Buddhist families.
The Police should ARREST Allirajah Subaskaran and QUESTION him to ascertain whether he has any information on any of the 39 LTTE massacres.

        Part II
Do not be like MS and as a means of exhibiting “Maithriya”, take flight to Thirupathy and Sinhapura (Singapore) for shopping!!!
You are imagining I suppose of July 25th, 1983 and the “Kotti Friday”, of 29th July, 1983 4 days later, when all and sundry animate beings in greater Colombo, from Wattala to Panadura, and from the coast to Padukka, went bonkers, jumping over fences and hiding behind all sorts of opaque things, save themselves from “Kottiya” (Purportedly, AK 47 trotting Tiger group targeting Sinhalese avenge the incidents in Colombo on Monday before), supposed to emanate from ‘Leela Stores’ on 5th Cross Street near Pettah Bodhi!!!!
What a site, none questioned, knew “why and from whom they were running away”. Buses which were normally queuing up one behind the other to pick up passengers and blocking the road and creating traffic chaos, were not stopping, even prepared to run down hailing passengers on the road!!!!
MR would not do anything of that sort, such a Bodhisattva and that’s why 6.9M placed their trust and faith in him, unless you have alternate facts to prove otherwise, which appear not to be in the public domain!!!

      Champa,
Does not make sense at all!
Appears to be baseless accusations and/or beliefs. What proof is there that it is Rajapakse support that is keeping the LTTE alive overseas?
Whatever fault, including bribing/financing with RDA funds the LTTE to prohibit NP voters to abstain for MR to win in 2006, you cannot fault them to have resorted to such things after 2009.
So you have to find “some other cat to bell”, for resurgence of LTTE, if it is happening!!

If you have any honor will you first come back to SL instaed of taxing the aussie tax payers. Sir is also forcibly giving insurance to pensioners as a grattitude to their services. Gona, stop blaming others and start blaming morons like you who are 100% responsible for this tragedy. Now all gone, there is no chance.

In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve. The farmers and teachers who are demonstrating on the streets are the very people who voted for the Rajapaksas at the Presidential as well as the Parliamentary elections.

The Rajapaksa family is corrupt. The Chinese-controlled Colombo International Container Terminals Limited (CICT)  said it paid nearly 20 million rupees (USD 150,000) to Pushpa Rajapaksa Foundation, wife of then minister Basil Rajapaksa.

The admission came after deputy minister Ranjan Ramanayake published a copy of a cheque for nearly 20 million rupees made out by CICT to Pushpa Rajapakasa’s foundation on May 21, 2012.

A report in the New York Times claimed a $7.6-million money transfer from a Chinese firm to former President Mahinda for the election campaign.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa owes a sum of Rs.47.9 million to Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLRDC) for the construction of the ‘D A Rajapaksa Mausoleum and Museum at Medamulana. This is a glaring case of using/misusing public resources for private purposes. Worse the project was approved by none other than Gotabaya Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development. The original estimate was Rs. 33.9 million but during construction, the cost ballooned to Rs.81.2 million. Only rs.33.9  settled so far leaving a balance of Rs. 47.9 million.

Black L, why do you use abusive language? Is it because you have lost the argument that you lie?

      Dear S.
Actually it is for CT to check if it lowers the bar to allow use of abusive language. Some may vent their frustrations too strongly or fail to counter a different view nicely, but CT is the decider to publish it.

Bloody, yes definitely Bloody! Hey, wait a minute, isn’t that the “blood” that brought Rajapakses back to power from ashes? They are going to enjoy it.
