A Post Script: Easter Sunday Bombing – More Questions To Minister & Ministry Of Defence, Law & Order

By Arun Kumaresan

Arun Kumaresan – Air Vice Marshal (Ret’d)

The tragedy has taken a great toll on the nation. But, President shamelessly addressed the nation yesterday with his usual “Swan Song” of – ‘I was not aware of the intelligence reports’. To start with, he should tell the nation why he failed to enplane on the fist available flight from Singapore and return to the nation. After all according to him; he was the only leader who fearlessly remained in Sri Lanka in the final phase of the war amidst LTTE air raids.

Besides that, in the absence of the President, as per our constitution & norm, PM has the functional control of the government. It is relevant to evaluate the actions by the PM.

He immediately returns from down South on hearing about the blasts and summons the “National Security Council” (NSC) to assemble at Temple Trees to react & respond.  However, Secretary Defense & Service Chiefs/IGP without rushing to handle the unfolding emergency contacts the President in Singapore. It took an hour plus for them to inform PM that the said location is unsafe due to the emerging situation and they will not be attending. Was it an excuse to avoid and scuttle the PM chairing the NSC??? This suspicion is further confounded, as they have failed to give an alternate location (a serious omission). PM then on his own initiative has informed to arrange the said meeting at the Ministry of Defense (MOD) the usual place for such meetings and proceeds to MOD. It took further half an hour as the participants’ on being cornered (or foxed) by the PM without rushing await further clearance from the President. Apparently the President had cleared with specific orders for them not to carry out any instructions given by the PM without his approval.

This was the state of affairs of our prime committee tasked with the Higher Defense Management on that horrific day. President has once again violated the constitution ( breaching  the solemn oath to protect the nation & its people from any forms of aggression ) by not only disregarding the intelligence report leading to mass casualties and also by obstructing the convening the highest defense body at a critical hour to react to an unfolding emergency.

Those members of the National Security Council who failed to rush to Temple Trees on summoned; too have violated by acting insubordinate to the constitutionally recognized office of the Prime Minister

May the Legislature take a serious note off above

It is up to the Minister of Defense, that would be President Sirisena, to protect the country. He cannot make excuses. If he cannot handle it, he should hand that position over to someone capable. He seems incapable of handling this volatile situation.

      Dear former Air Marshal, .
      .
      Thanks for the article.
      .
Current president seems to know nothing about the national security. He still feel that the other should have done it… for him… always pointing the finger at the others…. lack of his leadership skills costed the nation, …. over 325 or more lives.
If he deliberately, avoided Prime Minister Wickramasinghe and State minister Wijewardhana allow taking part in regular SECURITY COUNCIL meetings (should have held weekly), that says all about the COMMON SENSE of President Sirisena.
      .
And also PM should have made public aware if anything would have happened to the national security, he cant take the responsiblity for the life losses.
      .
So called Price winning, big mouths, the PRIVATE TV media Channels should have raised this issue, if they too, realized that lot in terms of National Security had been jeopoardised, and any threat could be easily happened…..

MEDIA OF A COUNTRY should be more vigilent about security issues, but SIRISENA ‘s almost private CHANNEL SIRASA had never spoken about any possible security threats.
      :
I think NOT JUST few authorities, but under the LEAD of President we lost almost everything: The lives that lost, woudl no thave been back even if we argue… heart breaking stories will reecho in our ears almost every from this day.
      :
I think LANKEN ALL various systems should be subjected to CHANGEs for good of the people. MEDIA should OPEN their eyes wider…. all in all, this proved that MEDIA failed to do the DUE even if their MOUTHs have been a day long disturbance to the citizens of this country. They only run after enhancing their RATEs.. this should be stopped.

      Sirisena’s fault 100%.

He should immediately call for a presidential election.

We want an immediate presidential election.

Soon after Mr Sirisena’s political maneuver to sack the incumbent PM and appoint MR as PM failed.
The parliament should have been dissolved, and fresh general elections and presidential elections should have been called.

It is very clear that Mr Sirisena has lost his mandate so please do the right thing and call for elections as soon as possible.

I suggest to hold a joint presidential and general election on the same day so that time and money could be saved.

      Colombo man

      Agree to great extent

Both MS & RW depended on each other/contributive to each others’ victory/ helpful to each other so failure of one should be considered as failure of the both & the country should have been taken for elections for both, the presidency & parliament @ the very beginning of their disagreements.

Both of them have proven failed now.

It’s crystal clear that we have unreal representation in the parliament & the president lacks required personality to lead the country.

PM, most probably has lost credibility for appointing AM & matters related to looting the CB & his being appreciated by powerful foreign leaders like president Trump & PM Modi is against the aspirations of majority people in this country.

Unless Rajapakes prosecuted & convicted, they have to be considered innocent & depriving them of right to leadership is probably unfavorable for the country @ least for the time being; until a strong leadership is emerged.

It’s Tamil politicians (not people) & Diaspora on hatred basis reject strongly, the Rajapakses.

Holding 2 elections @ the same time will be cumbersome & favorable for those want to rig it so even though it’s expensive they must be held separately.

This is pure speculation on my part ………. but after observing the aftermath and the behaviour of certain people …….. this is what I believe happened.

The selection of targets defies logic.

In SL there is no prior history of Muslims attacking Christian or vice versa ………. no history of animosity between the two communities ……….. the animosity was between the Buddhists and the Muslims …….. so why did this “Muslim” group attack the Christians? And the economic targets; the hotels?

Sirisena’s inaction – once the warning was received – and keeping the rest of the cabinet in the dark and the gloating of Mahinda and Namal after the event makes me deeply suspicious this is a paid and planned plot by the last Octobers’ coup plotters to capture power at the next presidential election. I suspect this plot was hatched by Basil and executed by Gota with some rouge elements in the forces.

Just like Prabakaran (who had suicide-bombers aplenty) was paid to prevent Tamils from voting ………… Money changed hands between the Rajapakses (with the knowledge of Sirisena; listen to the defence secretary) and the “Leader” of this insignificant “Muslim” outfit to carry out the dastardly act.

The attackers have had unhindered accesses to training, weapons, funds and freedom to execute their plot. This could not have happened without the knowledge and tacit approval of powers that be.

  • 32

    continued

Just as the putsch showed ……… do you believe that madly power-hungry Sirisena, Mahinda and the Rajapkses will let the UNP win the presidency without a fight? These are people who bribed even the mortal-enemy Prabakaran to win the presidency

They were certain they will not win the presidency because of the minority vote – 95% against them. Basil was busy hatching a plot to field Vasu’s relative Vignasewarm to divide the Tamil vote. They are always hatching plots a plenty while the imbecile Ranil is in deep slumber; he had no clue the October coup was coming. Ranil is slow-busy doing the “Westminster act” with a mouth full of pittu.

This is nothing but another political power grab by the coup-plotters ……… these people will stop at nothing.

They don’t give a fig about the slaughtered people …….. would sell their souls to the devil for power.

Just look at how happy the Rajapakses are …….. how they have awakened at the smell of blood!

Don’t be too surprised if this is a plot hatched by your own beloved politicians!

Well, when one was thinking how can things get any worse in Lanka ………. this happens ……..

    Land like no other.

      Nimal,

This is a plausible theory, for sure. And you certainly cannot rely on SL police to bring this to light, if it happened. After all, the accusation that the Paksas bribed Prabakaran has been out in the open for decades, and there has not even been an inquiry, let alone punishment for this, which in any other country would have been high treason. Even in US, there has been an investigation against the president for colluding against the ‘enemy’ (Russia) on a far lesser scale. In Lanka, not even Ranil, who actually lost as a result of this, has the guts, even while in power, to bring charges. Similarly, the government will do nothing against the Paksas even if they get evidence that they were behind these bombings. Such is the power of Sinhala racist vote bloc. The perpetrators would have chosen Christians because they would know that even if it gets exposed, there is no political cost for them as long as the victims are not Buddhists.

“In Lanka, not even Ranil, who actually lost as a result of this, has the guts, even in power to bring charges. Similarly, the government will do nothing against the Pakshas even if they get evidence that they were behind these bombings.”

That is very true, if you remember how long on 9th January 2015 after the election results, it took for MaRa to make up his mind to finally announce his defeat, after consultations with the CJ and various heads of Services Chiefs to stay in power.
It was after that he decided to confer with Ranil W to reach a decision to hand over power.

Unless Ranil discloses the mysterious undertakings he gave that day, it will remain an enigma forever and ensure the MaRa clan’s contued safety from prosecution for crimes.

The inaction on the part of the government about the intelligence warnings is due to infighting between the President and the PM is for sharing power which has resulted in the recent bombings that took place in the country’s Churches on Easter Sunday, the chaos we face now, is a consequence of that unholy understanding between MaRa and Ranil.

Please keep your peculations to your self as they as wild as they can be. The extent of the heinous crime, the warnings that were not heeded, the independent western analysis (available on the net) which has investigated several such atrocities by IS says that this massacre is from “IS playbook”.

It could have been prevented or at least the causalities could have been minimised if there was functioning government.

To speculate that this is the work of SL’s past president and his allies is so crazy. Remember it was they who eradicated these incidents after 30 yrs. Are you young enough not to remember those days? Families venturing out in separate vehicles in case they all get caught to a bomb, LTTE attacking Buddhist religious sites eg Anuradhapura Sri Maha bodiya etc etc

We are back facing death as it was nearly 30 yrs ago. Instead of being grateful for 10 yrs of peaceful living, you are allowing your mind to run wild.

Do you not see a similarity between NZ event and the current massacre
Muslims were shot whilst in prayer on a Friday – a holy day for them- in an innocent country like NZ which had no significant muslim- christian tension.
Christians were attacked in prayer on one of their holy days in a country that had not seen significant muslim- christianity tension.

Please let authorities do their investigations.

Yes don’t you also remember the days when the Sri Lankan air force and army were bombing from the land and air, Christian churches and Hindu temples in the north and east killing hundreds of worshippers and people who took refuge there ? Sinhalese and Muslim mobs destroying Hindu temples down south and Muslim home guards burning and destroying Hindu temples in the east and in a few cases burning humans along with the Hindu temple. This is why the LTTE attacked your precious Sri Mahabodhi and the Kattankudi mosque that was a hot bed of Islamic extremism then as now and the headquarters of the Muslim home guards. As the Sinhalese , Muslims and the Sri Lankan state was constantly attacking and destroying the places of worship and refuge of the Tamils. May be you suffer from selective amnesia

          Siva Sankaran Sharma,
This is an excerpt from a speech given by President Chandrika Kumaratunge

“On the other hand, I dare say, that there are reasons to justify the fears of the Sinhala. History records that ancient Lanka was invaded 52 times in 14 centuries by South Indian rulers, and was conquered and ruled by a few times. This may be sufficient to sow fear in the common conscience of the Sinhala people.”

Pre-requisite for peace, stability and prosperity is a democratic and pluralist state-by Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga
          ———
Invading Dravidians massacred Sinhalayo, burnt down villages, destroyed temples, burnt thousands of documents written in Ola leaves, burnt crops, destroyed irrigation systems. The list can go on.

I would like to respectfully remind you as to who started the 30 yr war in 1983 by murdering 13 army personnel? Who introduced suicide bombers to the world?

Once massacres are initiated by one ethnic group it is likely to spread to others groups. That is how the ordinary human mind works. It takes an extraordinary human mind to rise above the anger and the hatred one feels.

The remarkable statement from the foreign person who lost his two young children on Sunday shows the extraordinarily beautiful human mind he possess.

“Please let authorities do their investigations.”

Like they investigated Lasantha Wickeramatunga’s murder? :))

        Like they investigated Thadudeen’s “accident?”

Like they saw Eknaligoda living in France?

Like how they took precautions to protect the people when the warning was received 11 days before?

It’s a free world ………. If you want to believe in fairytales it’s your choice but don’t expect others to be so gullible like you. :))

      Nimal,
      .
Even if all is happened to the people, yet today, Rajapaskhe was cautious to put the blame on SIRISENA.
      .
Sirisena s foreign trips were not telecasted by many channels, for some reasons. As General Fonseka revealed it today, even if President could return to the country in the afternoon of the very same day that tragedy occurs in colombo, but he had returned only in the midnight of that day.
      :
I wonder why UNP stays yet stand still not revealing the truth. They should keep things for them, but not to the manner they are used to. He the PM should have let the people know about not calling him and his minister for SC meetings. IGP was also absent in those meetings.
And most of all, I wonder why President, the most stupid man in lanken politics have not asked for an apology for not having reacted properly as it was required by a president (as the minister of defence and minister of law and order).
Why these men seem not having proper communication on the issues of vital importance for the nation. For what purpose should we have a govt, if they fail to act accordingly.
Sirisena should be HUNG if the gallow to be reimposed in this country, his lack of seriousness regarding national issues, are more than clear to the nation. He should be stoned if nothing else would work to remove the man from the position.

It was only the pathetic display of stupidity by our so called representatives which we witnessed in the parliament yesterday. Telling us that they will prevent this from recurring is BS. People deserves much more answers than fooling around this time. I wasn’t aware or I didn’t know shall not be accepted as answers anymore. People haven’t elected them or maintain high offices not for such ignorant conduct. Criminal negligence by relevant authorities must be fully investigated immediately. What is important is to unite the nation with a firm resolution that law and order is paramount. Appoint capable and proven people to high offices, make them act independently with accountability to fulfil expectations of the people. No political intervention shall be tolerated including releasing of culprits arrested. Such actions by anyone should be dealt with criminal action.

Only plus I observed yesterday is that MR praising SF. Unite guys and fight the common enemy! Need a country first for us to practice the best democracy we are struggling to implement. We are far from achieving it looking at the conduct and quality of reps we ourselves have elected. Food for thought for all the people in this beautiful motherland.

      .
I hear you after a long, long time. This is what you fellow mason, Belgian who was Grandmaster of Czechoslovakia was telling me last weekend. He is in Colombo now. I’m not sure what Lodges he belongs to now.
      .
According to him, Lee Kan Yew summoned all the important Muslims, asked them to do some re-building, but more importantly, the leaders of the Muslim communities should be told that they are being given this one chance to put things right.
      .
Please take the lead in this. It is what you should do for the sake of all 21 million people living on the third of the island that has been home to us all.

I guess those who fly in the sky are not aware with the Ground Reality. It is certain that Maithripala is hiding certain issues.t, one thing is because of this bomb blast is times with neglecting one important issue. That is Maithripala sirisena went to Singapore to discuss the Bond Scam issue. Now more than once, another serious issue came forward and the Bond scam issue went to the back.
I think the bomb blast addressed another issue. That is the COMPLETELY DEAD BEAT PRIME MINISTER RANIL BECAME SOME ONE IMPORTANT. Because, after the blast he came to the SLBC and said i SAID, Mahinda Rajapakse, I said, Sambanthan, …… most importantly, I Said SUMANTHIRAN”. Sumanthiran is a nationsl list MP and is appointed to edit the constitution. Sumanthiran was a prominent player even in the OCTOBER 26th FRAUD.
I heard for some time, Ranil was fighting for some DEFENCE DUTIES and he was asking some regiments, under him.. Who wants Ranil to do that.
Besides, check SLBC, RAnil after the Buddha Statue vandalising in MAwanella, said that he instructed authorities to investigate it and prosecute the culprits to the fullest. Now, we learn even the culprit in that had been released and was arrested again.
Ranil did not have any authority,.Even then without getting permission from the PRESIDENT (Ranil could have phoned PResident in Singapore), he had ordered Triforces and Police heads to come to TEmpleTrees. that must be illegal. IT is Raniland Mangala who harassed Forces individuals and jailed them without proper evidence.
There are so many things to write longer than this article.

In a previous comment, I wrote that Ranil as he said, did not work on the MAwanella Culprits case. I read some where else, that two Culprits who were caught in VAnathawilluwa was released or not arrested because of a Powerful politician’s demand. So, Now Maithripala sirisena is going to change the IGP I suppose. but, that is complete non-sense.

I hear there is a video in which ISIS claims the responsibility. ISIS is a West created organization and cadres are mostly European muslims and unemployed middle eastern and arab muslims who were hired for PAY. ISIS is also famous for making FAKE video which are similar to those of the CHANNEL FOUR. Those ISIS Vedios are said to be made inside MOVIE STUDIOS or under those conditions. The President stand accused of not taking the enough steps to protect the country and its people. He should answer the people of this country and the international community for not taking the intelligence reports too seriously. Post mayhem, he stand accused again for taking long to return to the island. Was it his Kattadiya who asked him to go out and return on specific days , so that his Golden life would be safe while the country bled?
The PM is known for soft pedaling on political issues. He should have taken bold steps to remove this idiot of a president soon after he appointed an illegal PM. Now we have a President and a PM who don’t talk to each other because they think governing this country is their personnel business.
The president doesn’t want to appoint a full time Defense Minister while PM is not talking about it in the public.
Now the blame game has started and found the scapegoat in the name the police. The Police doesn’t rule the country, you idiots
For the sake of the country please convene the Parliament send this idiot of a president home and sack the PM and put all the crooks- political and terrorist behind bars.

The main concern seem to be the protection of VIPs and such things, not churches and hotels. The PM would have appointed a committee with international members. All his life he has never acted decisively. How can he ? He is plotting and planning to get personal benefits !

Sri Lanka has no leaders. Only dishonest jokers not up to the job.

Why you were not aware?Do you think it is a valid excuse?Blame game wont do?

Your business is to be aware of what is happening?

Do the [resident accept incompetence. It is not your duty to micromanage the defense ministry, but what about management by exception?.

I don’t think a satisfactory answer has been given by anybody as to why the Christians were targeted. The animosity was between the Buddhists and the Muslims. Would the authorities have acted differently if the warnings said that Buddhist places of worship were the targets?

If you people are muslim do not own up that this cowardly act was done by muslims.
This was done by a group of complete morons who believed that by killing these innocent people they will get istant admission to heaven.

While we discuss this terrorist attack, let us also remember the victims of the last such attack on a Church in the emerald island. This happened 24 years ago, and on this occasion the victims were actually asked to go to places of worship by the terrorists who then bombed them. Around 125 people died, several hundred wounded.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navaly_church_bombing

(I am sure, in response, a lot of veerayas here are going to list every single LTTE atrocity. Most of them would be true, with some exaggerations here and there. That does not make this church bombing not a terrorist attack, though. And if anybody wants to convince people this was an ‘accident’ or a mistake, try next convincing people the Earth is flat).

Its our fault for electing an uneducated person as the President. He stabbed the UNP which made him the |President; refused to appoint Sarath Fonseka a decorated war veteran and War time Commander as Minister of Law and order; he gave “Pinata Seats” to those who were kicked out of the Parliament; he has the audacity to bring the “Bookie King” who operated bookies when it was not legal to the security council meeting; he illegally kicked Ranil out as PM and he was judged as a person who violated the Constitution and still sits on that seat etc. Above all after receiving the notice of a terror attack he ran away to India and from India he ran with his family to Singapore to protect himself and his family. I am sure that RAW spoke to him in Thirupathi and thats the reason why he make an unplanned visit to Singapore. Still after the attack he did not return back to the country by the next available flight. Maithripala has to resign and he should be investigated and brought before the court and charged as an accomplice to the death of the masses.

Yours is the most rational explanation I have so far seen on any media following this horrendous event. People in this country are extremely gullible if they believe in the competencies of a little known local Islamic extremist group or fake photos manufactured by ISIS days after the event.

We have a desperate political group with plenty of blood in their hands who will stoop to any level to get back into power. It seems that no other political force with some level of integrity and foresight is left in our country to counter their diabolical plots.

During the four decades of LTTE terrorism, Colombians were the people who suffered a lot. After LTTE was defeated by Rajapakse regime Colombians got peace and freedom to live without fear. But these ungrateful Colombians listening to all the cock and bull stories fabricated by the spin doctor Awamangalam went for a change and brought ‘Yahapalana’ Government. National security was not a priority of the Unpatriotic National Party who played a dominant role in ‘Yahapalana’ Government. As a consequence of the soft attitude taken by the Government towards Muslim extremists, probably for their political survival, Colombians will have to go through all the hazels they went through before 2009. ‘Kohomada Wenasa Sepada’?

Actually, the Colombians are more educated than the usual yakkos who vote for the MR clan and they saw the danger in allowing the despot to continue.

Eagle Blind Eye with Bird’s Brain

“After LTTE was defeated by Rajapakse regime Colombians got peace and freedom to live without fear.”

      Oh please!!!
The security forces couldn’t/wouldn’t do a thing to safeguard the people even after getting specific warnings (3 times, the latest was one hour before the blast) from Hindians leave alone defeating the LTTE.

Remember it was VP who defeated LTTE with the support of Hindia and won two elections for Mahinda.

      You need rest.
      Go away come back

How about subcontracting this island’s security to Hindians?
      Where is HLD M?

      Eagle eye,

Oh, did the great King help people from Colombia too? How nice. I thought he only helped Sri Lankans by defeating the LTTE. By the way, why will the Colombians have to go through hazels? Do they have a lot of hazelnut trees in Colombia???? Gosh, there is so much I don’t know……. :(

People who blindly patronize a shithole country should read this multiple times to understand the depth of callousness, apathy, lack of remorse, willful negligence and obstruction, shown by a self serving head, MOD, politicians and rest of the so called administration. Now you may ignore thinking it does not involve you. It involves not just you but every citizen currently living in that hell . If there is another incident in a public place and when the shitheads behave the same it will be anyone of you paying the price. I was in Lanka for more than 2 weeks and left days before this tragedy. While there I did my regular jogging from Savoy theater to Kingsbury and after 15 minutes of stretching and break return to my place. Now I am told there were more than three explosion in that same route. We also had a large family dinner at Cinnamon with extended family members who also were on holiday. I well realize it just could have been me or my family members.

    Mr. Nimal Fernando

I am not surprised at all. One thing about Sirisena; he is a very shameless man. Maybe due to his back ground as a gamarala, he doesn’t have any finesse.
To put it bluntly he is a godaya. What you and I will can never dream of doing because of decency, Sira is either oblivious or too crude to care. We have seen this time and time again over the past few months in particular. His trump card is “I was not informed” each time he has to take responsibility.
He can sink to any depth to achieve his aims.
Similarly Mara and co have no decency or honour at all. They too are ob the same boat as Sira. They too want to grab back the power at any cost or under any pretext.
We all know what they did when they were in power. It was an indecent family rule. Connived with China to sell our country to them.
And didn’t have any scruples or shame in the way they did their things.
So what you say is not beyond them. Not beyond them at all.
I am not surprised at all.

The information that is coming out now is NOT GOOD.

If President Sirisena has obstructed the other members of the Security Council from meeting with the Prime Minister who in effect is the Head of State in the absence of the President, it is a major crime perpetrated by any President of not only our country but in any other country too.

THIS IS HIGH TREASON, and President Sirisena has to be IMPEACHED NOW, and the necessary bills brought to our Parliament this week before, not later. He should then be arrested and tried in the highest court, jailed and the key thrown far away to sea.

Maithripala Sirisena should be stopped from destroying our country any further. It is up to Ranil Wickremasinghe and the Parliament to act soon.

On the other hand as FM Sarath Fonseka rightly said in Parliament today, if the Prime Minister and the State Minister of Defense were purposely shut off from the Security Council of this country they should have ACTED AT THAT TIME, not cry now.

These two are also responsible for what happened on Easter Sunday. IMPEACHMENT of the President should be the first thing the country and the people should do first. They look up to their 225 Representatives in Parliament to ACT IN THE BETTER INTERESTS OF OUR COUNTRY.
