Even as two weeks passed since police claimed they had deployed several units to arrest Bodu Bala Sena’s (BBS) Galagoda Atte Gnanasara who reportedly continues to be in hiding to evade arrest, yet another Muslim-owned shop ‘Rich Shoe Palace’ was torched on Friday night in Mahiyangana.
This is at least the fourth Muslim owned business to be torched within this week alone. The shop was owned by a Muslim businessman from Batticaloa’s Kattankudy. Over the past one week, Muslim owned shops in Dematagoda, Maharagama and Nugegoda have been set on fire.
Despite even calls from the diplomatic community to take action against the increasing attacks on the Muslims, the government continues to soft peddle the incidents, and is yet to openly even condemn the attacks against the minority community.
On May 25, the police headquarters said that it had deployed several units to arrest Ganansara, however two weeks later, they are yet to apprehend him and the police claim that as he is in hiding, they are helpless.
Incidentally the attack on the latest Muslim owned shop in Mahiyangana comes almost a year after Gnanasara threatened to repeat the Aluthgama riots in Mahiyangana against the Muslims. Addressing a Satyagraha on June 21, 2016 to protest against the arrest of two youth from the area, Gnanasara told the IGP to take action against the senior police officers in the area, as they are not working in accordance to the wishes of the Buddhist clergy. “If you can’t handle them, tell us, we will take care of them. We only need about 50 people to take care of them, and we are not scared to go behind bars,” he said. Gnanasara in his speech added that if his group didn’t receive a favourable response from the IGP and the government, the BBS will not think twice to commence ‘phase 2 of the Aluthgama’ mayhem.
Despite openly admitting that he was behind the 2014 Aluthgama carnage, the government and the police turned a blind eye and did not take action against him.

If anybody thinks that they can incite Buddhists by doing this, it is a joke. —– In a village like Mahiyanganaya and in a city like Dematagoda – arsoning Muslim shops equally don’t sit well. —— The man who went on a foot bike to set fire onto two places (I don’t know whether it was the same man) without any fear to be caught, without even looking around, without any fear that somebody will follow him – all these are strange. —– It looks like as if he wanted to get caught. Something uncanny is here. Now he is in the police custody. If he has said that he acted on the instructions of so and so, it won’t be a surpise. This is a mockery. —-This is an insult to genuine Buddhists. The Police should arrest all those who set fire, bring them to Courts and end this drama once and for all.

This fire in Mahiyanganaya is strange. —— There are certain Muslims too, behind other attacks.—— Without their connection, these attacks wouldn’t have been successful. One can do one attack may be two attacks, but not a chain of attacks. “Even before finding the cause, Muslims accuse Buddhists”. —– It looks like the “partners in crime” are acting in accordance with what people are questioning.—– Look at the way the Story is unfolding. 1. First the attacks were “not major”, they were “simple” and happened where there were “no CCTV cameras”. 2. Then suddenly “there were CCTV cameras” as if an answer to people’s questioning. 3. Then there were “precautions” to minimize the fire after the attack. Eg: water-bottle-firefighters and removing gas cylinder. 4. Then when the simplicity of attacks were being questioned, “now it is becoming somewhat major”. 5. Beware, Police, next will be a major Reputable Shop/a major Mosque/somebody’s House.—- At this point it is pretty easy to predict.—– Who wants a religious riot actually? Buddhists, Muslims or the Government, to be precise the Minister of Law&Order? I have to name him. This went this far due to his inaction and deliberate delay in investigations as if he expects these incidents to escalate by number and by nature.—– He did this in the North and now doing it in the South.—— If there are riots, Emergency Law will be necessary which will use as a tool for UNP/Government’s many problems. Suppression/violence/terror are what they are good at. Freedom, democracy and peace were never in their books. They have already succeeded in suppression and violence. The next will be terror. By looking at the history of successive UNP Governments, the prediction is super easy.

Why do some people connect every attack to Gnanasara Thero? There should be a hidden motive. I think what Gnanasara Thero said was correct. The Thero said some people want to jail him and then harm him inside the cells or while taking to Courts. (Wimal also had the same threat to his life. Luckily he is out of jail now). —– Someone or a group of people is targettting Gnanasara Thero’s life. —– To be fair, I should say I DON’T think it is Muslims. They may want him to be arrested but not to be assassasinated, for sure. Or some interested parties are (mis)using some Muslims, seem to me they are unaware, to harm Gnanasara Thero and then create tension and uncontrollable riots throughout the country. Because, to me all this is a tangled mess. People don’t even know the cause of the fire or the motive behind attacks, may be it is personal may be not, because during 1989 riots many people were targetted for personal reasons, but promptly point their fingers at Gnanasara Thero. —– I don’t know where the Thero is right now. Recently it was found that certain social web site were attempting to spread fall’s information among general public saying that extremist groups were behind anti Muslim activities such as burning and destroying Muslim properties in the country. Burning of a Muslim person owned tea factory in Navalapitiya and a shoe shop in Mahiyanganaya on 09 June 17 ,were given vast propaganda through the social media.How ever ,according to the investigations it revealed, both the incident’s were taken place due to a leakage of electricity. Adjoining shops owned by Sinhala traders were also burnt in the fire in Mahiyanganaya. But, social media highlighted only the burning of Muslim shoe shop ,with out mentioning any other’s.All these propaganda help only to grow disharmony among the all the communities. Finally we condemn such fall’s information that lead to heart the harmony and peaceful existence among all the communities.

Tamils never gave the lands or women to Muslims due to generosity, but most of the Tamils were converted by Muslims as well as others in history for equality (where there is no casteism), English education and poverty related reasons. During Portugese period, Muslims were robed, massacred and subject to ethnic cleansing. At many instances, Muslims also joined with Tamils as well as Sinhalese to oppose and attack Portugese.
It is not something new that Tamils, throughout history have attempted to categorize the Muslims as belonging to the Tamil race, for their selfish reasons to eliminate the unique Muslim identity while ancient Arabs were trading partners of Tamils in south India that made it a mandatory to learn Tamil, and this is how Tamil became mostly spoken language of Muslims. And also, Islam attracted less privileged low caste Tamil origins in Jaffa for equality factors as mentioned earlier.
Muslims were against LTTE, and not against Tamils. I guess you’re not willing to differentiate Tamils from LTTE.
