A Sri Lankan Buddhist Monk Speaks Out – Let Sri Lanka Have Thousands Of Buddha Putras Like Him

By Colombo Telegraph

In this video a Buddhist monk,  Ven  Galkande Dhammananda speaks on Sri Lanka’s war and the Buddhists way of conflict resolution.

“It is indeed heartening to see an erudite Buddhist priest speaking out, guided by the teaching of the Master, when many have chosen to remain silent. Ven Dhammananda, Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya, speaks through his experience, but has not been angered or being revengeful despite the personal loss to him. Let Sri Lanka have thousands of Buddha Putras like him to guide this nation, which is now stranded and moving aimlessly, to its future glory!” says a former Deputy Governor – Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. W.A. Wijewardena.

This is the truth nothing but the truth. I’m so sad that we do not have leaders with wisdom. the learned the elite and the religious leaders are all working for their personal agendas. no one is thinking about the nation or it’s future.

many fail to identify the real enemy we had from 1956…… The politicians and their segregating policies.

think who needs a jumbo cabinet? why the public money is wated on these small Brian stooges?

how much public money is wated on the maintenance of the president, his family, the cabinet of ministers? what are the people gaining from these ? nothing.

look at the public transport? The type of buses and the schedule , is it for the people’s convenient?

Look at the vegetable prices? Who is gaining profits? Is it the farmer? No the intermediary who is a supporter of a
    Politician.

there’s nothing done to relieve the masses from their suffering. but the elected politicos get all the luxury from the public money. there are many corruption as well.

if our president is a true leader he can and have the ability to put this country in the right path. Law and order to all citizens equally, language policy, cut down the government expenditure by reducing the cabinet, advisors and officials.

but he have not done this , he is not even willing to listen to the snags with wisdom.

people now know who is the real enemy. but BBS and other extremists are trying to divert the attention of the people from the real problems/ root cause of all problems.

media too is misleading the people. ,

This monk and monks like him must speak up and SAVE BUDDHISM in Sri Lanka from the Rajapassa regime which has turned it into a violent and militarized dogma..
There is a STRUGGLE FOR BUDDHISM going on in Sri Lanka today. Buddhism has been taken over and DISTORTED and TALIBANIZED and rendered VIOLENT and MILITARISTIC by the Rajapakse Brothers, who have wrapped themselves in the Sinhala Buddhist flag to gain impunity from their crimes and corruption.
The Sinhala Buddhist modayas are CONFUSED.
The Balu Sena is the vehicle for the Talibanization of Buddhism – the brain child of Gotabaya Rajpakse to DISTRACT the Sinhalaya modaya’s from his military dictatorship.

Not only Buddhism is at stake here but also all the other religions as well. Same tactics will be employed with suckers like Hakim, Asswer and the rest of the clowns. Watch out after the Muslims it can be the Catholics – and it has already started. Let all right minded people resist this by shedding petty differences and UNITE. NOW IS THE TIME.

I think this is the easiest and the shortest cut that GOSL use as solution to our Youth Unemployment, education, economic, population and social problems.

Men in Boots drinking Kasippu, reducing social burden through eliminating the unwanted by any means is the norm of game plan.

First arouse then eliminate excess…….Problem solved. Repeat same in coming years.

    Venerable Sir

Your timely message shows there is still some hope left in a nation refusing to learn from its past and willfully walking towards the abyss. Your words are so eloquent and I’m deeply moved because they speak the plain truth and they come from your heart. You epitomize a true Buddhist monk as defined by the Dhammapada:

“He is not a monk just because he lives on others’ alms. Not by adopting outward form does one become a true monk. Whoever lives a holy life, transcending both merit and demerit, and walks with understanding in this world — he is truly called a monk.”

I’d like to convey my utmost respect and best wishes to you, Sir, in your noble endeavour.

Why does a mainly buddhist nation requires to maintain a huge army after cessation of war. All the funds spent on the army is needed for welfare of citizens.
The reverend bhikku should ponder on this.

“Why does a mainly buddhist nation requires to maintain a huge army after cessation of war”

Because it is not a Buddhist nation nor the people adhere to Buddha’s teaching.

Let us liberate Buddhism from Sinhala/Buddhism then the army will have no more excuses to occupy.

Because one has to survive first and only then one could ponder over Buddhism. If one does not protect the country and the nation, then people won’t survive; they would be over run by foreigners and enemies. Human are a predatory species. If Tamil Nadu people were also Buddhists, and all other foreigners too, and let Sri Lankans live in peace then there would be no need for an army. But then that is just a pipe dream. Be real!

It is the political ‘guli (pill)’ given to the people that outsiders (US, Tamil Nadu, INGOs, etc. etc.)are responsible for disturbing peace is Sri Lanka is swallowed by some people and they live with that thinking. It is our corrupt political culture that is the cause of all evils that invites outsiders to interfere. Continuous quarrel and noise in the family that disturbs the neighbour invites the neighbour to interfere. That is a simple example.

I see. Then why is it US maintains a massive military forces, the most powerful in the world? Which nation as interfering in its internal ethnic issues? Why would British and the French and Chinese and Russian need such large armies? Are n’t they peace loving nations and hunky dory internal, non-ethnic conflict societies? Or are they? I see many commentators here argue on the need for reducing the numbers in our forces. Considering most of their stand is anti government, I am not surprised of their proposition for it would be one of the conniving ways to let the separatist and its backers to upset the prevailing peace and start destabilizing the county to begin another Eelam war.

Peace with Eelamists never worked. Peace was their trick all alone. NGOs and their pay masters tried this peace tricks between 2001 and 2003 during RanilW’s government. Ranil’s defence minister, Tilak Marapana said; “I have no intention at all in waging war with the LTTE at the moment. We have embarked on a peace mission and our target today, and my role as Defence Minister, is not to plan strategy to attack but merely to ready ourselves to defend”

Now look how LTTE got ready. Between February 2002 and April 2005 LTTE had recruited 1200 children. LTTE’s suicide cadres and pistol gangs ended up killing virtually all of Sri Lanka’s intelligence units whose names were divulged by the UNF Govt. LTTE smuggled shipments of arms, sophisticated communication equipment through SL’s own customs. LTTE build an air strip with the asphalt meant for the A9 Highway. LTTE assembled small planes and even built illegal bunkers in Govt controlled areas
Ranil’s Govt gave LTTE 95% of their Eelam and the rest the LTTE planned to secure through the ISGA/PTOMS with the former President playing Santa.

Now see LTTE action. Before the start of Eelam war 1V, LTTE had violated the ceasefire 5464 times between 22 February 2002 and 4 February 2006. During that time LTTE killed 174 security forces personnel and 388 civilians while 117 were attempted murders, 620 abductions, 46 attempted abductions, 106 cases of extortion, 2199 conscriptions, 875 injury to persons, 22 instances of torture, 128 cases of intimidation.

Now a new war drums are beat in Tamil Nadu. And you want Sri Lanka to reduce the forces. We can visualize you aim.

As stated by the Ven Thera, there are lessons to be learned from the 30 years of war. These do not require commissions or resolutions but calm and collected comprehension and judgement. To eschew hatred and violence by right mindednes, right speech and right actions.

Today we have several learned members of the Buddhist Clergy calling for peace and tolerance. Some members of the govt and other political parties have also spoken positively on this issue. Many have remained silent for reasons best known to themselves.

It is the strength of ones conviction and character that one can speak with compassion on behalf of justice, peace and harmony. Those who have have hidden ideas or agendas cannot speak against their conscience. Those who are selfish or careless do not speak at all.

A true follower and preacher of the teachings of Lord Buddha.

It is a terrible shame that the Maha Sangha is keeping quiet about the terrible damage the fascist racist monks are causing Buddhism. Are the mahanayakas deaf and blind? Because of their inaction the true followers of Buddhism among the clergy have to come out voicing their horrors and fears openly and individually against the BBS, Sinhala Ravaya and other groups.

The thousands of politicians we have are nothing but parasites on our society. They contribute nothing, but live on the labour of others. They continue to foment trouble in order to safeguard their positions. They are the most corrupt, immoral, lying, cheating, thieving despicable people, who do not give a damn for the hard working, honest people of this country.
How can we chase them away and change the systems?

This is highly commendable and Buddhists should open their minds to the core of Buddha’s teachings. Rev. Dhammananda is trying to explain that to a society deeply enmeshed with narrow ethnic, religious and racists slogans. All those peace loving Sri Lankans should think that real protection for Buddhism comes through the monks who really spread their compassion and not hatred.

Rev.Sir: I appreciate very much the ideas you are expressing and the need of the hour is clear that the so called “educated” and people in high positions have to do something to safeguard the country and the nation.

In my opinion, this is an uphill task so long as we have “compartmentalized” our nation to Sihala, Tamil, Moor etc. This segregation has given the greatest opportunity for the “Political Animal” to hang on to power and “enjoy” life. So can we expect any change to happen? I doubt?.

In the present context it is like ‘” SEARCHING FOR GAJA MUTHU FROM A WILD BOAR’s TASKS”.

More of this kind of monks can help building our torn society.

What this monk preaches is far from the mind sets of the monks of BBS. See the great difference. I wish our people could see it clearly for a better society.

Crabs cant their offsprings to walk straight is what we are compelled to see in srilanka state today- if we had a proper functioning Buddha sasana ministry, nothing like BBS or alike segments could come so far.

My doubt is…. what we call “buddhism” in Sri Lanka, IS IT REALLY THE same ‘BUDDHISM’ THAT we see and know that exists in countries like Thailand, Japan, Burma etc. When COMPARED both, one will definitely conclude that there is no connection whatsoever between the TWO. The latter is a religion contains the teaching of Gautama Buddha. The former (i.e. that exists in Sri Lanka) is nothing but a sinhalese racial party bearing (sadly) the same word ‘buddhism’ that has no place of the teaching of Gautama Buddha.

Both Thailand and Burma Buddhist Monks DO NOT HAVE ANY SAY IN THEIR COUNTRIES POLITICS. THEIR BUDDHISM AND POLITICS ARE TWO SEPERATE ENTITIES UNLIKE SRI LANKA.

ONLY IN SRI LANKA, BUDDHISM HAS PENERATED SO DEEPLY INTO POLITICS, NOW DICTATE THEIR TERMS AND DECISION TAKEN POWER IS SHARED BY BUDDHISM AND POLITICS.

WHATEVER PARTY GIVE MORE CHEESE AND HONEY TO THEM LIKE THE RAJAPAKSES, THEY ARE READY FOR ANYTHING.

STANDING FOR JUSTICE,TRUTH, HUMAN AND MINORITY RIGHTS, AGAINST CORRUPTION ARE ALL NOW FOREIGN FOR SL BUDDHIST IDEOLOGY. MONEY, PERKS AND PRESTIGE IS THEIR PRIORITY.

THIS IS THE TRUE STATE OF BUDDHISM IN SRI LANKA TODAY.

These kind of monks are most respectful and deserve the respect from all communities while the monks – like the one who leads the BBS should be forced to derobe for the sake of protection of lanken Buddhism.

Alone the words that the monk of this article are highly educated. That all good Buddhists notice in the first glance. BUT THE ONES TRYING TO DESTROY LANKEN BUDDHIST IN THE NAME OF ANY VIOLENT SEGMENT LIKE BBS should be banned within lanken prevailing laws. Latter should be made by the country political leadership to avoid communal violence deliberately perpetrated by them.

This is a Struggle between True Buddhism and Distorted Buddhism of Mara, represented by the “Budu: Bala Sena, or rather Mara Bala Sena supported by the Govt of Rajapaksas.

Sri Lanka need more of these True Buddhist Monks who know the Dharma, so that Buddhists can be proud.

The Govt. is failing in its responsibility to keep law and order, and the President should be impeached.

The venerable monk’s statement, while welcome, is non-specific and shallow. He paints the roots of ethnic conflict in broad brush strokes, and speaks of conflict in very general terms. There is no criticism, by name, of the Sinhala Buddhist nationalist movements that are currently fueling ethnic conflict, nor of their political patrons. The venerable monk requests that conflict be resolved amicably, without allowing them to escalate into violence. In doing so, the agitators and victims are held within a common frame, and thus equally culpable, when the realities (historical and contemporary) are very different.

The fact that the monk’s extremely general plea for ethnic harmony has received such an overwhelmingly positive response in this forum speaks volumes about how even a rudimentary appeal to peace by a Buddhist monk has become such an anomaly nowadays that it has to be transformed into a cause for celebration.

This Buddhist Priest is the only student of late Rev Dr Walpola Rahula, onetime VC of Vidyodaya University. Therefore, it is not strange that he speaks like a lion without fear or favour, two qualities which his Guru Hamuduruwo would have passed onto him.

Sri Lanka’s future will definitely depend on the bold and erudite Sri Lankans like him.

Good political leaders that have sacrificed their lives in developing their countries have NOT had closer links with bigoted religious mind sets. Perhaps except for the middle east countries that practise undemocratic ideologies. Their ideologies have been unique to them given the oil rich soils in those countries. Nor have any successful leaders like Mahathir mohammed blindly worked with fundamentalists in achieving their final goals. Those leaders while respecting the religions intelligently use the knowledge of those religious leaders in uplift the society. So we the majority of the nation – predominant Buddhists would be more than happy to free from any form of BBS or any other form of violent movements that can weaken the nation again instead of standing by them in their efforts to develop the country. Comparable to a virus that infect and destroy the healthy mind sets. These form of infection can have a greater impact on the majority folks that have proved to have gone wrong in the recent elections. Politicians have easily targeted the rural folks for their petty advantages.
Buddhist monks from Myanmar were seen as violent some stages given the conditions that country has been- that could perhaps been necessary for them but no means exemplary to lankens. A country like ours that practise parliamentary elections since the independence, does not need to follow any country that is far behind of us. So the circumstances in Srilanka are not comparable to those of Myanmar.

In a free fair referendum (not even thinkable within the circumstances in the country today), peoples likes can easily be ascertained of course after making them adequately aware about the real nature of BBS leading figures. It is not new that our people are easily manipulative. Village folks are much more vulnerable , targets. Politicians have abused their gullibility easily to get elected. Sad consequences are clearly seen today.

For me, being out of the island just watching their public speeches of BBC leaders on the screen, the very first thought come to my mind is why our Buddhists have been infected by this deadly VIRUS –BBS and how can they be liberated from virulent BBS. There is no any seelawanthakama in that Buddhist monk- BBS leader. If he cant behave as a respected Buddhist monk, why does he have to continue being saffron robbed ? He and the like monks should better leave sasanaya and enter the Gihi life. It is comparable ones want to drive on Southern highway have to respect the laws valid there.

As I feel – it is just the violent verbal culture spread by Mervin, Weerawansa and the ilk have paved the way BBS or any other segments to be emerged. People have lost their respect – filthy uncivilised Sinhala has become the fashion today. Some media like cheaper TV channels, radio channels and new papers use rude language without focusing on the impact of their contents. University dons in Sociology and Psychology seem to be not doing enough bringing adequate critics against those acts. I myself, hearing that a woman saying “ Babahukung” (I really don’t know what she meant by that… )– I felt very ashamed in SRILANKA last December. To me It sounded as if a Sinhala bad words. Anyway, in my days, – decade ago, never ever a woman used that sorta Sinhala.

Mervin’s public speeches are disastrous – leaders indifference in this regard is no means acceptable. If any Minister would use that sort of language within EU – that particular minister for sure would not stay in his office any longer. We have to improve our society to the levels that our people be exemplary.

What I herd was when President Mahinda Rajapakse was travelling to Geneva in 1990 for UNHRC session to prosecute then UNP Government on human rights violation, he tried to smuggle over 600 Photographs of dead JVP and other innocent youth to claim that they were murdered by UNP.

Also MARA wanted to show the world that UNP carried out this Genoside and through this would have had a plan to topple the UNP Government.

Subsequently at SL airport, the authorities confiscated those 600 photos and let him go without them to Geneva, but MR insisted on a written document from Airport authorities for him to show that those photos were held by the Airport authority.

President Rajapakse brought this written paper to UNHRC’s nattention to show them that GOSL murdered those over 600 dead JVP members and produced the paper to prove that he was telling the truth, and they believed his talk and the paper which showed UNP atrocities and Genocide carried out against JVP and innocent youth.

    Please read the following webs.
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/midweek-politics-d-day-dilemma-for-mr/
    My question is…….

1`)WHO GAVE PRESIDENT RAJAPAKSE OVER 600 DEAD JVP ers, PHOTOS TO BE TAKEN TO GENEVA OTHER THAN HIS BROTHER GOTABAYA.

2)WHERE ELSE MR COULD HAVE ACCESS TO GET THESE SO MANY NUMBER OF (over 600) DOCUMENTS AND PHOTOS OTHER THAN FROM HIS OWN BROTHER GOTABAYA RAJAPAKSE.

3)WAS THIS A MARA/ GOTA CONSPIRACY TO PROSECUTE THEN UNP GOVERNMENT AT UNHRC AND TO USE IT TO TOPPLE THE UNP GOVERNMENT.

    4) DID GOTA TOOK THESE PHOTOS AFTER KILLING THESE CHILDREN, AND THEN GAVE THEM TO HIS BROTHER TO TAKE THEM TO UNHRC TO PROSECUTE UNP AND THEN USE UNHRC TO TOPPLE THEN UNP GOVERNMENT ON UN HUMAN GENOSIDE LAWS.

    5) DID MARA/ GOTA HAD A PLAN TO TOPPLE UNP GOVT BY MURDERING BOTH JVP AND INNOCENT CHIULDREN TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND GAVE THEM TO MARA TO TAKE THEM TO UNHRC.

6)WHERE ARE THOSE OVER 600 MURDERED JVP AND INNOCENT CHILDRENS PHOTOGRAPHS THAT MARA TRIED TO SMUGGLE TO UNHRC IN 1990 AND WHO HAS THEM NOW.

    5) IT’S TIME TO FIND THE ANSWERS TOTHE ABOVE QUESTIONS, AND THESE PHOTOGRAPHS COULD BE USED AS WITNESS AND EVIDENCE OF GENOSIDE AND MASS MURDER CARRIED OUT AGAINST INNOCENT CHILDREN.

    6) THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE LOOKING FOR JUSTICE AND ALL THE OPPOSITION PARTIES SHOULD HELP THE VICTIM FAMILIES TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR LOVED ONES.

Therefore both Ven Dhammananda, JVP and Sri Lanka Patriots should investigate above to seek justice for the innocent lives that were murdered and their grieving families.

Similarly proper investigation should be conducted on the remains of both LTTE carders and innocent Tamil civilians who died at the final war at Nanthikandal.

EVERYONE HAS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN OUR COUNTRY.THE EDUCATION SECTOR- WHICH INCLUDE ,POLITICIANS,CIVIL SERVANTS, EDUCATION OFFICIALS,TEACHERS,STUDENTS,RELIGIOUS ORGANISATION LEADERS(ALL RELIGIONS)-NOTHING WRONG WITH THE RELIGIONS AT ALL,PARENTAL ATTITUDES-ALL THESE-JUST A FEW AREAS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO WHAT HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS.WE HAVE STILL NOT LEARNT OUR LESSONS AND ARE MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES.WHEN ARE WE GOING TO THINK OF OURSELVES AS SRI LANKANS.VERY EASY TO PASS THE BLAME TO SOMEONE ELSE.WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT?TAKE THE STEPS TO ERADICATE HATRED CAUSED BY TRAITORS TO THE RELIGIONS AND THEIR COUNTRY.IF YOU DO NOT HAVE PEACE IN YOUR HEARTS,YOU CANNOT ACT IN A PEACEFUL MANNER, WHERE EVEN A FIRM ACTION WILL NOT HURT SOMEONE.LOVE,TOLERANCE AND FORGIVENESS IS THE ONLY ANSWER.

Yes, we have seen so many deaths in Sri Lanka, so many innocent Tamil women have been/and still is being gang raped by Sri Lankan military. SO many thousands of Tamils going missing. ONLY solution to fix this issue is to give the Tamil people their land. Creating independent free Tamil Eelam. Until Tamil Eelam is freed, the Tamils will not stop their fight. Tamil Eelam is the only solution to this conflict in Sri Lanka.

As a Buddhist and a long time friend of Sri Lanka, I respectfully endorse the wise remarks of the Ven Galkande Dhammananda, and hope that all Sr Lankans remember the words of the Buddha:

Hatred is not ended by hatred, but only by love.

It was good to see that on the desk in front of the Ven Galkande Dhammananda was the Ven Walpola Rahula’s book What the Buddha Taught. It was my introduction to Buddhism many years ago after I first visited Sri Lanka in 1971 as a representative of Amnesty International. The Dhamma can help to solve the problems Sri Lanka has endured for the last four decades.

I am very suspicious about this discourse. Sinhalese did not wage war against tamils. Sri Lankan Army fought a defensive war against the LTTE aggression. This type of stories are funded by NGOs in their villainous
objective to divide the country while making themselves rich. Dear Sinhalese brothers,do not get deceived by funded propaganda.

Dear chandra weerasinghe, please try to understand what rev dhammananda trying to say. If you dont know the history of how this ethnic problem started please find &read. It was the sinhalese politicians & tamil politicians who ruled the country during post indipedent sri lanka in 1958 who were responsible for this conflict. and subsecuently the politicians who took over the country by giving fales promises. Ok we all give credit to the army for finishing the war. But why creating another ethnic war?
