The purpose of language is to inform, clarify and explain. Impacting public perception is the purpose of a media release. Laborious language is used to obfuscate and mislead. None knew this better than George Orwell – the genius who invented those classic expressions – ‘newspeak’ ‘doublespeak’ and ‘Ministry of Truth’.
Before he wrote his famed “Nineteen Eighty-Four” he published a brilliant essay – “Politics and the English Language”.
In that essay he traced how warped minds of the power elite resort to bloated and vacuous language to serve their own purposes.
This brief essay is about my effort to reach a Comprehensive Understanding of a Rebuttal of Reprehensible Allegations. In the process I am desperate to avoid going bonkers. 
On Saturday 9th September the Ministry of Defense issued a media release captioned “Official Rebuttal to Chanel 4’s Reprehensible Allegations Regarding the Easter Sunday Attack”.
The next day Sunday 10th September the Presidential Media Division issued a press release “President to conduct a comprehensive analysis of all open information correlated to the Easter attack”.
The Ministry of Defense Press Release is bluntly decisive and stubbornly conclusive.
“On behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Defense hereby categorically refutes these false allegations and reiterates the government’s unwavering commitment to the truth, justice and the well-being of the Nation.”
The Presidential Media Division release offers an assurance, a pledge and infuses a sense of gravitas. It undertakes or commits to a “comprehensive approach aimed at providing lawmakers with a comprehensive understanding of the situation, paving the way for well informed and decisive action.”
We are in truly troubling times. The process of recovery from going broke has taught us the terms debt optimization, governance audit and asset quality review.
The language relied on by the Defense ministry and the Presidential Media Division recalls the superlatively astute essay by George Orwell.
Post ‘Channel 4 dispatches’ has taken us to another highpoint. Now we must undertake a comprehensive understanding of a rebuttal of a reprehensible allegation.
Orwell told us that insincerity is the greatest enemy of clear lucid language.
“When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink.”
Some years back, while on holiday in Indonesia, I watched Indonesia’s’ famed shadow puppetry which is called ‘Wayang Kulit”.
It is a mesmeric experience. A single person holds your attention. He is called the ‘Dhalang’ which means master puppeteer.
The master puppeteer is both narrator and manipulator. The puppets are made of buffalo hide. You don’t watch the puppets, You watch their shadows.
All puppets are on strings held by the master puppeteer. His right-hand counters his left hand. The story is about good and evil. The Shadows of souls perform on the illuminated screen which is supposed to be ‘heaven’ .
The puppet master manipulated the puppets to dance, walk, laugh, and cry with his deft finger movements.
The Master Puppeteer bellows out loud and angry sounding words and soft soothing words. Most stories are either from Maha Bharatha or the Ramayana.
This ancient art form is an integral part of Indonesian culture and is traced to its Hindu-Buddhist period. UNESCO in 2003 declared this art of Wayang Kulit as a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
It is all about manipulating light against darkness. Light reveals a story of shadows.

Yes even when they were targeting the Catholic/Protestant Christians, you can see they were mainly targeting the Tamil Catholic and Protestant Christians and were trying their best to avoid the Sinhalese Christians. Three churches were targeted. The Kochikade church was hit when the Tamil mass was taking place, therefore the victims were all Tamil Catholics. The Protestant church in Batticaloa would have been 100% Tamil. Only the church in Negombo had a predominance of Sinhalese Catholic victims, but it is also widely believed that the suicide bomber inadvertently targeted the wrong church, Instead of a church where the mass was to be held in Tamil, or the correct church at the wrong time, and bombed during the Sinhala mass instead of the Tamil mass.

However, this is Negombo and even many of the so-called Sinhalese or people attending the Sinhalese mass would have been Tamil Catholics. One of the grandmother or mother stated during the memorial service, for the victims held in Negombo, that although she is nominally a Sinhalese . she is far more fluent and at home with Tamil. This is the reason they carefully selected these areas, instead of 100% actual Sinhalese areas, as they wanted to inflict most of the damage on Tamil Christians and not on Sinhalese Christians. Even when killing Christians there had to be more damage to the Tamils, this is why they waited for the Tamil services or masses to begin in mixed areas or selected a Tamil area like Batticaloa. Killing Christians for political gain also had to have a racial tone. This itself proved who were the masterminds behind this. Actual Islamic Jehadhis would not have cared about the ethnicity but someone wanting a political comeback would have, wanted the least amount of damage done to his or her fellow Sinhalese, whose votes he or she relies on and their fellow ethnic kin. Tamils on the other hand are expendable and will never vote for them.

The name Periyar is used as an honorific very frequently. Yet, in the Tamil speaking world one is justified in assuming that it refers to EVR. (The same would go for Mahatma, Arijnar, Navalar etc.)
Check across the media to learn who normally (or obviously?) comes to mind when the name/title Sadguru is mentioned.

Today’s article by DBS on DM, gives much more details about Hanzeer Azad Maulana, whom Pillayan mentioned as a casual acquaintance. (same as Gotha and Zaharan ) According to DBS, Douglas , Pillayan and Karuna knew Hanzeer’s father from the time EPRLF was formed. Hanzeer’s father Mihilar was a top most member of EPRLF who later became the personal bodyguard of Padmanabha and was killed in LTTE raid. Later, as an undergraduate at Peradeniya , Hanzeer approached Devananda for help, and was offered a Govt job using his influence. Devananda introduced Hanzeer to both Karuna and Pillayan. After the split between the two, in no time Hanzeer got elevated as coordinating sec and spokes person of TMVP. ( Man Friday ). I believe Hanzeer that he arranged a meeting with Zaharan at Pillayan’s behest. .

Just wondering if the Min. of Defence can issue a statement on behalf of the govt. More puzzling is the contradictory statement issued by the govt. to C4 that a parliamentary committee will investigate the allegations. If categorically refuting, why another investigation? Apparently, Mr. Kongahage, now states that he was tricked by C4. As a senior former diplomat who has represented the country, is he implying that the truth can have different versions? C4 gave an opportunity to Sally, GR, Pillyan & the Govt. to respond. Sally has stated that he was abroad at the time. His statement would be more credible had he shown a copy of his passport as proof. The Govt,. has responded by promising a parliamentary investigation but GR & Pillyan refused to comment. GR did not challenge C4, only issued statements to the local media denying the allegations, while his cronies went on a campaign of discrediting C4. Who shall have the benefit of the doubt?

I checked. You were correct in saying that China produces a good deal of Petroleum from her own oil wells. However, that is way below her consumption. Therefore China is a net importer of oil.

So, as in so many other areas of activity Lanka can’t even look after her own trade. It is disgraceful that we have to get others to distribute within out own country, having allowed a foreign country to earn money even on those imports.

How does one Acquiesce that we Humanely exist with such “LOW DOWN MINDSET INDIVIDUALS”!!!??? They have reached down to the ‘Lowest-of-LOW’ levels to achieve the “lost power” to cover-up dastardly deeds of 15 years!!??
On the assumption, the claims are true and could be validated, which could only happen by an NOTHING but an “International Investigation”!!!???

There is nothing to wonder about the Min of Defence issuing the statement on behalf of Government . Double standard of the government or showing different faces to different situations has the history of Sri Lanka over the past eight decades or a centuray. As Gota admitted about his two faces, the reality is that all the Governments show two faces depending on the needs. Sri lankas UNHRC rep herself gave the same or similar statement at the UNHRC session. Even Rajapaksa family asked for international investigation now because they knew that none of the governments accept international investigation as long as Sinhalese people accepts. In Sri Lanka Sinhalese are no different to Buddhists or Muslims are no different to Islam. It is also their political weapon.
When Rajiv Gandhi forced JRJ (Ranils’s Uncle) to accept the Indo – SRi Lanka accord, JRJ arranged some one to kill Rajiv in Sri Lanka but now Indo-Lanka accord never implemented in Sri Lanka and Rajiv lost his life and finally India is now begging Sri Lanka even Sri lanka is now a bankgrupt nation. So you cannot expect anything different from his uncle.
