A Year In Cloud Cuckoo Land

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Then take us for Gods, as is proper and fit…” ~ Aristophanes (The Birds)

A pandemic with no end in sight, an economy that is unravelling, a fiscal abyss, a debt pile-up, an overwhelmed public health system – and the Gotabaya-Mahinda government is planning to build a leisure park near the Peralanda wetland in Ragama.

The cabinet paper was presented by PM Mahinda Rajapaksa last week and approved. The cost was not mentioned, but is likely to be stupendous, money that should have been used to increase our testing capacity, assist those whose livelihoods have been destroyed, or bring back our migrant workers, some of whom are reduced to sleeping in parks.

During his speech presenting the Appropriations Bill for 2020, PM Mahinda revealed that the government will grant Sri Lankan Airlines a loan of $150million, i.e. bout SLR27.7billion. This same government has not added a single new ICU bed, a single new ventilator to the existing stock since March this year. President Gotabaya’s explanation is as incomparable as the decision itself: “Our doctors and hospital staff were able to diagnose COVID infections in the first stage and treat them accordingly. Therefore intensive care services were not required”.

The situation would be comedic if the stakes were not so colossal.

The President has delegated the task of beating the pandemic to the Army Commander and the military. The Premier has delegated the task of beating the pandemic to monks and his favourite quacksalver, Eliyantha White.

As infections soar beyond our modest testing capacity, scarce resources are being spent on a drone regiment to uncover and arrest curfew breakers. These curfew breakers will be sent to prisons which are already hotbeds of Covid-19, adding more human fuel to the viral fire. Buddhist Affairs Department has officially instructed all divisional secretariats to arrange for Ratana Sutta and Bojjanga Sutta to be chanted in temples. Ministers, including the Minister of Health, were shown throwing magical pots, courtesy Eliyantha White (the faux doctor of our faux royals) into waterways. A monk who claims to be an arhat went on a chopper sprinkling pirith pan over the island.

In this Opera of Chicanery, everyone sings the same aria: the government has the pandemic by the throat, there is zero-community transmission, there have been only five true Covid-19 deaths… Discordant voices are ignored or silenced. Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara, who tried to introduce a note of reality into the officially sanctioned symphony of fantasy, has been asked by the Minister of Health to resign. His immediate crime was probably a statement he made on the 12th. “Though we think there are only 15,000 infected people in Sri Lanka, a greater number might be found if we do testing properly”. Nothing reveals the strategic ineptitude of our rulers than the 2021 Budget. Unless a revision has been made, the 2021 Budget will allocate less money for Health than the 2019 Budget did. According to the Appropriations Bill for 2021 (approved by the cabinet in early October) allocation for Health decreased by Rs 29billion compared to 2019.

The war ended more than a decade ago. The pandemic is a living reality. Yet defence tops the 2021 budgetary allocations. The second place goes to Highways, which gets more than double the money allocated to Health.

With such prioritisation, it is little wonder that no steps were taken to ramp up our testing capacity during the lull between the previous and current waves.

On November 1st, the GMOA, a key Rajapaksa enabler, said that the government was claiming there was no community spread without doing random community testing. Most testing is limited to contacts. The entire Kurunegala district got only 50 test kits a day, the GMOA stated. With such a paltry number, random testing (or even adequate testing of contacts) is impossible. If the plan is to hide the real spread of the infection, as Donald Trump wanted to, there’s no better way than this. Is it any wonder that the Rajapaksas prefer to entrust pandemic fighting to generals and quacks?

One year on: Rajapaksas 1; Sri Lanka 0

One year after the 2019 presidential election, the Rajapaksas’ maximum programme has been achieved.

Sri Lanka has President Gotabaya, Prime Minister Mahinda, and Ministers Chamal, Namal, Shasheendra and Nipuna. Soon there will be a Minister Basil too; a signature campaign is on, getting SLPP parliamentarians to ask Basil Rajapaksa to come to parliament as the next saviour.

20th Amendment swept aside all obstacles to familial rule and dynastic succession. One year on, the promised Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour are a reality, for the Rajapaksas.

But for Sri Lanka and a majority of Sri Lankans (including a majority of those who voted for the Rajapaksas), prosperity and splendour remain distant dreams, more unreachable than they were in November 2019.

High prices and chronic shortages in rice and vegetables and a bus fare hike, have added to the economic woes of ordinary people, already hard hit by the pandemic. Environmental devastation continues at an unprecedented pace and will get worse with the handing over of more than half a million acres of forest land to divisional secretaries.

Caught between contending American and Chinese pressures, Sri Lanka’s sovereignty is being undermined in open sight. The Rajapaksas are far less capable of withstanding international pressures, given their unprecedented financial dependence on China and their family ties to the US. The Rajapaksas’ natural politico-economic affinity is with China. But with so many core family members being US citizens (with homes and bank accounts in America), the regime cannot ally itself totally with Beijing.

For the Rajapaksas, a Biden-Harris administration is a worse prospect than a second Trump term. The new State Department is likely to be controlled by Obama-era officials, many of whom have an intimate knowledge of the Rajapaksas. Given Gotabaya and Basil Rajapaksas’ familial ties to the US, this administration is likely to be more vulnerable to the potential uses of the Magnitsky Act than the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa regime. Since Xi’s China behaves more like an imperial master, openly intolerant of any sign of autonomy on the part of its satellites, the Rajapaksas might find themselves in deep international waters in 2021, unable to live without Chinese largesse, unwilling to give up their (chosen) American homeland.

Though quite a few of the once faithful Rajapaksa acolytes are unhappy about the new deeds of their masters, an open rebellion is unlikely. When Minister Johnston Fernando boasted that the government would protect loyalist lawbreakers, the obverse, though unstated, was also included – dissenters will be punished, whether they are innocent of guilty. The curiously similar fates of Shani Abeysekara, Hejaaz Hisbullah and Rishard Bathiudeen would make any potential dissenter think twice before walking the (occasional grumbling) talk.

While the public is focusing on pandemic and economic woes, the Rajapaksas are busy transforming the state into a private fief. 19 CID officers were transferred out last week, all of them involved in the investigation on the Easter bombing. The director of the investigations division of the Bribery Commission, SSP Padmini Weerasooriya, has been packed off to Jaffna. Previously, she was sent to Nugegoda, but the 19th Amendment was still in effect, so the transfer was rendered invalid. With the 20th, the Rajapaksas have absolute control over the state and unlimited power to punish any official who is unwilling to toe the line.

The ongoing tragicomedy in America demonstrates that in the story that is democracy, there is no happy (or unhappy) ever after. The chapters end, the book goes on. In the US, all it took was a reality TV star to undermine a fundamental pillar of democracy – the peaceful transition of power, a timely reminder that democratic failure is not an exclusive Third World malady.

In military coups, democracy is killed in the open. De-democratisation works differently, more erosion than decapitation, a gradual chipping away at democratic institutions and values, norms and practices, until only the shell remains. This is the Lankan reality today. The 20th Amendment has turned the presidency into a de facto monarchy again.

Lifetime presidents exist in a ‘mirror-state’, Roger Owns points out in The Rise and the Fall of Arab Presidents for Life. These leaders see themselves as “omnipotent, indispensable and well loved by a grateful people in whose name they professed to govern.” To maintain this self-delusion, critical voices must be silenced and derisive laughter wiped out. This is evident in the Rajapaksa moves to shape the pandemic narrative. The police are searching for anyone spreading fake news -or uncomfortable truths – on the internet. One man is already in custody. The aim is to force social media to confirm to the official truth, as most of the print and electronic media have done. Once established and normalised, the practice of hunting social media dissenters will continue even after the pandemic is a distant memory. The drone regiment too would become a permanent weapon in the Rajapaksa arsenal, a way to watch over us, like Orwell’s Big Brother.

A chance to defang religious politics

The new despotism, claims political thinker John Keane in his eponymous book, is top-down state capitalism which obfuscates its inherent inequalities by “top-to-bottom patron-client connections, middle-class loyalty, staged elections, and a great deal of officially sanctioned talk of the people as the veritable source of political order.” All of these features are present in the Rajapaksa model. But like in many countries with deeply ingrained racial or religious divisions, there is also an element that serves as a politico-ideological binding agent – the notion of a ‘national community’ – the unity of the majority race or religion (sans a few traitors), to defend its ‘common interests’ against minority encroachment and foreign interference.

In his soon-to-be-released autobiography Barack Obama verbalises a truth many have known – that the Trump presidency was a reaction to the presence of a Black man in the White House: “It was as if my presence in the White House had triggered a deep seated panic, a sense that the natural order has been disrupted…”. Donald Trump made use of this innate fear and anger, fed into it and built on it. The first weapon he used, the Birther conspiracy, is a trope familiar to us in Sri Lanka – the notion of minority communities as perennial aliens, viscerally unpatriotic, an argument used by Mahinda Rajapaksa (and his JHU backers) in 2004 to wrest the Prime Minister post from a man who was more suited than him in every way to hold that position, Lakshman Kadirgamar.

What Donald Trump said about Barack Obama (and what he will say about the coming Biden-Harris administration) is no different to what Mahinda Rajapaksa and his acolytes claimed after their 2015 defeat – their racist attempts to delegitimize the election results on the ground that a majority of Sinhalese didn’t vote for the Maithripala Sirisena, that he was elected by the minorities, as if the vote of a Tamil or a Muslim is of less value than that of a Sinhalese.

During the last presidential and parliamentary elections, the mainstay of the Rajapaksa platform was their image as saviours of this national (Sinhala-Buddhist) community.  Sinhala-Buddhist monks played a key role in this war to reclaim the land, state and society for the majority community, to create a Sinhala-Buddhist king and, through him, a Sinhala-Buddhist Sri Lanka.

Sinhala-Buddhism is a political religion. This political religion was used by the Rajapaksas to fuel their comeback. But now, their goal achieved, the monks who worked to ensure the electoral success of Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa are being disregarded.

This is a positive development for a truly Sri Lankan future – because it creates a rare opportunity to break the toxic link between religion and politics, a link that has harmed both politics and religion. But instead of allowing political Buddhism and its representatives to fade into oblivion, we are subjected to the unseemly sight of both Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa rushing to the abodes of the discontented monks. Nothing illustrates the bankruptcy of Lankan opposition today than these opportunistic attempts to woo the Rajapaksa discards. It might seem like clever politics, but it is the brand of myopic cleverness that bedevilled Ranil Wickremesinghe’s career and reduced the UNP to its current status. Tragically, Sajith Premadasa seems to be imitating his erstwhile leader’s tactics, believing that he can create and crest a new Sinhala-Buddhist wave.

The Rajapaksas are the true owners of Sinhala-Buddhism, just as Donald Trump has made himself the true owner of White racism. The JVP, the JHU and Sarath Fonseka tried to become more Sinhala-Buddhist than the Rajapaksas and failed. If the UNP and the SJB try to traverse the same path, the Rajapaksa future will remain bright.

Buddhism is Gautama Buddha’s Philosophy whereas Sinhala-Buddhism is Anagarika Dharmapala’s Religion (based on Mahavamsa) which has turned into a Political Religion today. This Political Buddhism is a racist religion that even the Buddha would NOT have recognized. As Tisaranee rightly said, the Rajapakshes took the maximum advantage of this Political Sinhala-Buddhism to win the elections.

That is same with Hinduism, Islam and Christianity too. Hinduism in SL is the invention of Arumuka Nalavar. Islam has been modified by the House of Saud to suit them. Christianity was modified by various kings of England, etc. to suit their needs.

What happens now in SL is superstition. Alien, genital, tree, clay, etc. worship was never part of any Buddhism though Buddhists also particularly politicians do it.

“Hinduism in SL is the invention of Arumuka Nalavar. “
        This is BS.
AN was a revivalist of a form of ‘Hinduism’ (Saivaism). He was not a political animal like Dharmapala.
Do you mean that the Muslims here are guided by “the House of Saud”?

Learn some history. Arumuka Nalavar established the present Hindu education system in the island. Without it there won’t be any Hindu followers outside the plantations.

Be my Guru and kindly teach me how ‘Arumuka Nalavar’s establishing the present Hindu education system in the island’ make him the ‘inventor of Hinduism’ in Sri Lanka?

        Gatam,

I am not sure if you really know the history of Sri Lanka. Even in Ramayana Sri Lanka is mentioned as its said Ravana was a devout Hindu and he lived in Sri Lanka. Hinduism in Sri Lanka is over 2000 years old.

Even Buddha was a Hindu. Are you saying there were no Hindus in SL before Emperor’s Ashoka’s time? Isn’t Sangamitta who brought the Bo Tree Sapling to SL?

Sj@ why was Mahavansa subjected to its revisions over the decades? What have the historians, Buddhist literature experts and the archaeologists done overs the decades? Will people ask that question about ‘holy texts’?
There is revision often out of exigency. Also with a strong oral tradition and the way language changes there will be some changes to the text.
There is suppression of information and exaggeration of facts in any record of history. (Deepavamsa is very brief about Dutugemunu while Mahavamsa reportedly has 6 out of 35 chapters.)
Mahavamsa has parallel texts and events in neighbouring countries to confirm important events.
Why revision would have been minimal over centuries if not absent is that there seemed no need to revise.

Ramayana was a narrative based on characters who may have existed and events that may have occurred. Its author did not claim it to be history although the royal line of descent of Rama and succession are stated. A lot of place names cropped up after the epic was popularized in the South, South-East, and East Asia.

Mahavansa was intended as history. It had a predecessor in Dipavama. One can dismiss the Vijaya legend, but not the rest.
Sri Lanka is a remarkable exception in the sub-continent for chronicling historical events systematically, despite flaws.

B1@ jathaka katha taken from Hinduism are the basis of sinhala buddhism. Those who knows nothing about human biology would agree with them, like for example what the b monks preaches about “how human milk is produced through human blood”. Fact is mama glands produce “milk” in any mamal. But this myth is being repeated by star monks through TV and Radio. As no times before Rajapakshe led politics I’d politics is entwined to sinhala buddhism. But looking back, it has not healed the society instead it has promoted crimes within buddhism. This is but not seen this much of deteriorating in Thailand where over 90% are Buddhists. 😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉

The Jataka tales have nothing to do with “Hinduism”.
They have mixed sources and have a strong folk tradition.
                *
As for blood and milk there is a link, but not as direct as the preaching may suggest:
The blood supply to the mammary gland is extremely important for mammary function. All of the milk precursors come from blood. To produce 1 liter of milk 500 liters of blood have to pass through the udder. When a cow produces 60 liters of milk per day, 30,000 liters of blood are circulation through the mammary gland. This represents a blood flow of 1250 liters per hour.
                *
How the breast responds to baby’s suckling:
Prolactin causes your alveoli to take nutrients (proteins, sugars) from your blood supply and turn them into breast milk.

I would not say, it has nothing to do. At least some influences from Hinduism should be there because it is the oldest religion and whole lot of Jathaka tales in SRILANKEN BUDDHISM are taken from them. And we were taught that Siddhartha background was entwined with hinduism.

Anyways, my biggest question would be if Deepawansa was first written in Pali language, and how do we know its traslations are 1:1 at the time, sinhala and English versions were created out of the primary source ? False interpreations of anything could mislead the followers. I just believe, it was based on whole lot of misinterpretations. Like for example, srilanken TV channels the way how they interpreted US election and the basics of US systems ? If anyone would interpret anything, that would go viral independent of its state being right or wrong. That is not overlooked in srilanken issues of the day.

                    Continuing:

About basics of biology: I dont think I need to explain school biology to CT readers (but some basics), each and everyone of us would easily know if there is no proper blood flow, there would be some health problems. Be it in your main arteries/veins or peripheral ones it would remain the same. I know this very well from Diabetes patients across Europe. bold What I added above is sinhala fictions made out of false theories – that the human blood would turn out to be mother s breast milk is totally a misinterpretation. We perfectly know that blood would not turn out to be milk of the mammals in that process.

This is little bit more about producing human milk – The mammary gland is a gland located in the breasts of females that is responsible for lactation, or the production of milk. Both males and females have glandular tissue within the breasts; however, in females the glandular tissue begins to develop after puberty in response to estrogen release. Mammary glands only produce milk after childbirth. During pregnancy, the hormones progesterone and prolactin are released. The progesterone interferes with prolactin, preventing the mammary glands from lactating. During this time, small amounts of a pre-milk substance called colostrum are produced.

Wilhelm Geiger was one of the first Western scholars to suggest that it was possible to separate useful historical information from the mythic and poetic elaborations of the chronicle. While other scholars had assumed that the Mahavamsa had been assembled from borrowed material from Indian Pali sources, Geiger hypothesized that the Mahavamsa had been based on earlier Sinhala sources that originated on the island of Ceylon. While Geiger did not believe that the details provided with every story and name were reliable, he broke from earlier scholars in believing that the Mahavamsa faithfully reflected an earlier tradition that had preserved the names and deeds of various royal and religious leaders, rather than being a pure work of heroic literary fiction. He regarded the early chapters of the Culavamsa as the most accurate, with the early chapters of the Mahavamsa being too remote historically and the later sections of the Culavamsa marked by excessive elaboration

Even if you believe it, still does not prove any Hindu connection because according to Ramayanaya, Ravana was not from Sri Lanka. He was from North India. He invaded SL, killed the SL king, stole his flying machine and ruled SL for a short while until Rama ended his rule.

              Dear CT readers,
              Adam s peak:

Adam’s Peak is a 2,243 m (7,359 ft) tall conical mountain located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the Sri Pada (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී පාද), i.e., “sacred footprint”, a 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit, which in Buddhist tradition is held to be the footprint of the Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Hanuman or Shiva (Tamil: சிவனொளிபாதமலை, lit. ‘Sivanolipaathamalai’), i.e., “Mountain of Shiva’s Light”, and in some Islamic and Christian traditions that of Adam, or that of St. Thomas.

Sri Pada is first mentioned (as Samanthakuta) in the Deepawamsa,[citation needed] the earliest Pali chronicle, (4th century), and also in the 5th century chronicle Mahawamsa, where it is stated that the Buddha visited the mountain peak. The chronicle Rajavaliya states that the King Valagamba (1st century BCE) had taken refuge in the forests of Adam’s Peak against invaders from India, and later returned to Anuradhapura. The Mahawamsa again mentions the visit of King Vijayabahu I (1058–1114) to the mountain. The famous Chinese pilgrim and Buddhist traveler Fa Hien stayed in Sri Lanka in 411–12 CE and mentions Sri Pada although it is not made clear whether he actually visited it.

Gautama never striped himself off the Hindu religion. He preached the good and the bad and the Ugly. In that he was referred to as lord Buddha because of his preaching. Despites Buddha’s teachings, the so called Buddhists still in pay homage/pray to Sai Baba and various other Hindu temples/gods in India-especially the ruling class. Perhaps they are trying to get the best from all and give the worst to their ‘subjects’. Please forgive them Lord- they know not what they do.

Those who are born Saivaite (or in other branches of Hindu) can never disown or leave for the good the religion itself.

It is a blood-lineal bonding to the religion. Once you are being a Hindu, you are always Hindu.

All these current Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and other religious denominations, however generations or centuries-old their conversions have been, have never disowned or left Saivam or other branches of Hindu.

Anyone who does their rituals for Purataasi Mahaa Maalayam (புரட்டாசி மகா மாளையம்) for their ancestors will know that it is impossible to disown or leave their branch of Hindu religion. Of course, those whose parents are currently living cannot do the rituals themselves, and their parents must do rituals Purataasi Mahaa Maalayam for their ancestors.

This I came to learn about when I was 10 or 11 when my parents did the rituals for their ancestors.

Brahminic Hinduism is inexorably linked to the concept of Varna and thus caste.
The caste of a “convert” is an issue that remains a problem. Will he be outside the four Varnas and be a ‘Panchama’ or another class of ‘non-untouchables’.

                • 0
                  0

First of all, Hinduism is the invention of these Brahmins, and that is why I say branches of Hindu.

If you take Varna, all of us are Soothiraas anyway. So, it is not a major hindrance against conversions.

Those who converted have never managed to erase their caste, though they may have attained wealth, status etc.

However, caste is one reason for the conversions.

To be fair, it is the so-called thick Vellalar who had mostly converted voluntarily in the colonial time. The primary motivation is wealth, status etc., yes, they had a net gain. Other castes too converted and compared to converted Vellalar, they are low in numbers.

But conversions into branches of Hindu is, even now, unimaginable to the religions itself.

Another reason is, I think, branches of Hindu are not that institutionalised like other religions.

So far we do not have any religious war, although Muslim invasions always destroyed religious establishments.

All considered, the idea of conversion is alien to the branches of Hindu.

The Sinhalese people and language only came into existence around 7AD and Hinduism or to be accurate Saivaism predates this by thousands of years. The original people who would have practiced Saivaism in the island would have been ancient Dravidian tribes , who would have migrated to the island during prehistoric times and the Veddah to some extent. They would have been speaking a dialect or language , that would have been similar to Tamil or even a simple semi Tamil dialect or language. Sinhalese people indeed! The vast majority of the present day Sinhalese are descended from these ancient Tamil or semi Tamil speaking Dravidian tribes who converted to Buddhism and from later migration to the island from the then Tamil areas of South India , from ancient , medieval to recent times.

I do not confuse anything. It is you who is confused . For your information a language has a script and a dialect does not. There was no language called Sinhalese until 7AD , it was gradually evolving from Tamil , that was heavily mixed with Pali/Prakrit , after the arrival of Buddhism . The Vaedda dialect as probably did the old Sinhala approaches far closer to Tamil than modern Sinhala in its pronunciation. The Vedda dialect, their spoken language is identical with Elu which was the spoken language of ancient Sri Lanka, which is semi-Tamil; as to the grammatical structure it is essentially Dravidian and simple (Emaneau, M.B 1961). Examples:

The way I see it, especially these days, SL Sinhala Buddhists belief that the story of Mahawamsa as 100% true document is a fundamental problem. When today’s politicians make political speeches they use the stories in Mahawamsa to bring hatred between Tamils and Sinhalese (Dutugamunu -Ellala story for one). If SL Sinhala Buddhist believe fully that Mahawamsa is true, then they also believe that the origin of the Sinhala race is the result of a conjugation between a Lion and a Princess. How can this be? Mahawamsa stories are written to boost the moral of the Sinhalese. Once they believe these stories are true, which are taught to Sinhalese children at a very young age a “superiority seed” is placed in them. Similarly the chapter that is being written or has been written (not sure which one is correct) re: Mahinda Rajapakse, I am sure the LTTE war and the result of which also will be twisted to say that only LTTE committed crimes and not the Government and Mahinda is a Saint.
Bandaranaike started the division between the communities which lived in peace until he started a political party for his own benefit. Once he started SLFP, every political party which followed the Bandaranaike doctrine had to do more and more to segregate and divide the population based on ethnicity or religion.

How come that there is no historical chronicle for any part of the Indian sub-continent despite vast empires stretching across 2000+ years even through the expansion of colonial presence starting 16th Century?
The orientals were more into recording events systematically.
The Mahavamsa itself was written centuries after the events for political reasons, that had much to do with internal squabbles.

            Ari,

, I agree we have to take not only 1983 attacks, we also should take armed forces and LTTE illegal killings to Hague. Today its only the remnant LTTE an their surrogates are calling for international inquiry at the UN while the Govt is not agreeing to it.

My opinion, we do not need Hague, there should be one major public inquiry held in Sri Lanka, similar to Truth and Reconciliation inquiry held in South Africa. This inquiry in SL should also include illegal killings by all parties involved during JVP insurgencies. Foreign participation is essential as most Sri Lankans now live abroad, some of whom are even ex LTTTE members. If the LTTE surrogates want international participation in inquiries why should any one object. All what should be done is to request foreign governments where those who committed atrocities in SL now live to be investigated and presented to the inquiry to be held in SL. This way all parties who committed crime will be produced before the commission and there would be international participation as well.

This has been continued by every government, especially the SLFP and its fringe parties (Wimal’s, Gammanpilla’s etc) and now has made it worst by Gotabaya and Mahinda for their own family personal benefit.

If this has to change, it will take a very long time, and it should start with stopping the segregation of schools based on race, religion and languages. All the schools should have all three languages and religions taught to students from Grade 3 to Grade 10. It should be compulsory to learn all three languages and all the religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity). The religious subjects should also not be divided into different religious classes but all religions are taught as one subject. If separate religious studies have to be studied the children can do it on their own spare time outside the school. If such a system is introduced then over a period of time the hatred between religions, languages and races will fade away.

Will the “Rata Rakina Viruwa” Gotabaya who is now above the law have the “GUTS” to bring about such a change?

        Buddhist1,
Teaching Tamil in Sinhala schools and Sinhala in Tamil schools is compulsory. In Sinhala schools teaching Tamil takes place but in Yapanaya TNA controlled NPC did not appoint Sinhala teachers. Education is a devolved function. This is a good case to abolish devolution of power.
Actually, Sinhala students should not waste their valuable time to learn Tamil. What benefit they get by learning Tamil? Better to devote their time to learn Korean or Japanese than Tamil. If Tamils want to live as Sri Lankans in this country they should learn Sinhala. It is also the only living ancient classical language. The Tamil language and Tamil people are the biggest contributors to the formation of the Sinhalese people and language. Take the Tamil contribution from the Sinhalese people and language , there will be no Sinhalese. Hebrew and Arabic are sister Semitic languages. Hebrew is spoken by only 7million as their first language and Arabic by around 320 million as their first language . These so called Arabic dialects are so divergent and not mutually intelligent . Many in North Africa do not speak Arabic as their first language but Berber, which is completely different and belongs to a different language group but are still counted as Arabic speakers. Hebrew is much older than Arabic but Arabic is more polished and it originated from Aramaic ( the language that Lord Jesus Christ spoke) . However it is Judaism and the Jewish culture that gave birth to Islam now the basis of Arabic culture. Most of the old testament is in Hebrew. The Koran is basically the old testament. Please stop posting rubbish. What has Hebrew and Arabic got to do with the Sinhalese language rammed down the throat of the Tamils? We are interested with what is happening here and not with Hebrew and Arabic or the Jews and Arabs. You always come up with strange arguments to justify Sinhalese racism.

As for screwing up . It is not only the Jews who have screwed up the Palestinian Arab but all other Arabs too. They screw each other up too. Syrians screw Lebanese. Iraq tried to screw up Kuwait , Saudi tries to screw up Yemen, Muslim Arab screws up Christian Arab. Sunni Muslim Arab screws up Shia Muslim Arab and the list goes on and they all screw up the Palestinian Arab. As per you all this screwing up by the Jews and the Arabs justifies Sinhalese racism, genocide and war crimes against the Tamils? Are you out of your mind? It is the racist attitude of the Sinhalese and the Sri Lankan government that made most Tamils decide not to learn Sinhalese. The Tamil politicians may have encouraged this move but the Tamil population decided. Do not be an apologist for Sinhalese racism and twist facts. Trying to compare a world language like English with Sinhalese , is another stupid argument. People are eager to learn a world language , even the Sinhalese.

Please list all the Sinhala Medium schools that teach Tamil and Tamil Medium Schools that don’t teach Sinhala.

      Lanka Canuck,
From time to time anti Sinhala Buddhist mafia come out with phrases to humiliate Sinhala Buddhists and monks. ‘Mahawanse Mindset’, ‘Sinhala Buddhism’ ‘Yellow clad thugs’, ‘Yellow robed Skin Heads’ are such phrases.
There is nothing such as ‘Sinhala Buddhism’ or ‘Anagarika Dharmapala’s Buddhism’. Simply because Buddha’s teachings were transcribed for the first time in Sinhale by Sinhala monks it does not become ‘Sinhala Buddhism’. Buddha’s teachings have two variants; Heenayana (Theravada) and Mahayana. Sinhalayo follow Heenayana (Therawada) Buddhism not ‘Sinhala Buddhism’.
Buddhist monks have become a ‘pain in the neck’ of some guys to achieve their objectives. So there is a campaign to humiliate and condemn Buddhist monks and Sinhala Buddhists. Colonial rulers and missionaries tried to destroy Buddhism and Buddhist monks and failed. Now another group is trying to do the same. We are watching!

          SJ,

You yourself said once, that Prof. NDS was then no a racist ?
          :
I think Prof. NDS or anyone of that racist nature, would not see it back. He is utterly disgusting man to have added that RAJARATA UNKNOWN KIDNEY DISEASE should be connected with Arsenic gods..not even just graduates would behave so. Does not that say almost everything about his general knowledge ? He may be knowledgeable in quantum physics, but his overall knowledge on srilanken politics is beyond ABCdian level.

To me, the kind of senior men are no different to the blue flies being found on heaps of excreta.
          :
SJ, could you explain us why Prof. NDS became an anti-west ? Is that not a chain reaction in srialnken society, to let come up NDS like figures in order their racial politics be well maintained ? Today’s emerging man of that nature is Jayasumana. His professorship is fishy to some today.

It is all because NDS could not get on with his colleagues back in his student days at SUSSEX (as a PhD student).

Thakurartha Devadithya Guardiyawasam Lindamulage Nalin Kumara de Silva (Sinhala: නලින් ද සිල්වා; 20 October 1944) is a Sri Lankan philosopher[ and a political analyst. He is the current Sri Lankan abassador in Myanmar.

Is his being anti-West your problem? Kindly tell me why anyone but the well to do should be pro-West in the Third World. Anti-imperialism is one matter in which he has been consistent.

I cannot explain what happens to individuals or why; and I do not probe personal matters to find explanations.
Even JRJ reportedly claimed that he was a ‘leftist’ at one time. Any explanation based on his private life?
It is best to leave out personal matters as much as possible.

In General we dont need to probe personal matters to find explanations. But if such virulent men and their crime activities would overflow deteriorating society, do we have any other choice than studying their profiles in detail ?
Like for example, Wimal Buruwanse and his loyality to mlechcha Rajapakshe politics. WW s was born in JVP, but the very same person to be the front man of an abusive political wing (Rajapakshe balawega) today is paradoxal right. But society is not ripe enough to see it yet today.

No democracy, No communism nothing else, but racism/facism based rule is chosen by SRILANKEN people today. Not even the light at the end of the tunnel is emerging in terms of a new era … nevertheless whole lot of people celebrated it yesterday, … president via TV and his slaves through Face book.
Democracy is only for holding elections and getting elected in order to abuse the tax payers funds. As for me, it is a matter of being civilized. Now you guys would come up with US republicans and their protest marches against the elected POTUS ? There I think, so long political leadership of parties would not take actions, anything and everything could go on.

[“The Rajapaksas are the true owners of Sinhala-Buddhism, just as Donald Trump has made himself the true owner of White racism. The JVP, the JHU and Sarath Fonseka tried to become more Sinhala-Buddhist than the Rajapaksas and failed. If the UNP and the SJB try to traverse the same path, the Rajapaksa future will remain bright.“]

    Spot on.

But is there any other way for a party to win enough votes/seats to secure the presidency or form a government in Sri Lanka?
This seems to be the only way to earn the popular vote of the majority ethnic group, and the key to winning elections.

Would Rajapaksa’s New Constitution further strengthen the country’s overriding commitment to Buddha Sasana?
Yes, if Gotabaya’s all Sinhala Presidential Task Force for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province appointed on June 4, 2020 is any indication.

The evangelical Christian votes once again heavily favoured Donald Trump who is anything but a God fearing Christian.

    Go figure.

I had a great respect towards Ruwan Weli Maha Seya from my schooling days after learning the history of it. When a man with a history connected with murders and frauds was able to use its premises to take oath which had many promises he never intends to carry out or is capable of performing, that great respect I had, vanished altogether..

        Dear Ferryman,
        .
It is the same with Kelaniya Raja Mahawiharaya. My elders thought, if anyone would worship that temple, all sins accumulated over the years would go die down. .No body else, soborne educated – incumbent CHIEF monk being a dead blind supporter to MR clan, turned the most sacred temple into to a most SCARED temple filled with thugs today.
Fomer Premier s (Mr Wickramasinghe) family sacrificed a lot for establishing that beautiful Wiharaya as history yet proves, but today, they dont even respect him. Those miriskudu throwers (chill powder throwers) has turned out to be area thugs but close confidiants of Rajapakshe mafia.

My surprise, even if srilankens got their higher degrees at renowned colleges/Unis, on their return they react no different to any uneducated men that never had the chance to see any other cultures and systems. Either srilanken soil has its invisible powers to turn anyone stupid, or they just do it by joining the same bang wagon. Why ? May be becoming servile is written in sinhala genes than that of anyone else ?

Yes you are right just now. Alternative or not we are stuck in it.
      But not “any alternative.”
In due course if people hit rock bottom or even become dissatisfied heavily, another alternative can come and those who love this country should not lose hope just now.
So let us look for an alternative by getting the forces behind a genuine leader who loves SL beyond self and family, even though the present set up, only lends itself to the one who is best in selling language and religion.
After all a strong case was against MCC saying there will be a wall and even going to A’pura needs a visa. Believe me I met a few people in the deep south who truly believed it.
      And contrast :
Merkle the German Chancellor was recalled by a reporter who said: Remember I took a picture of you in this same dress about 10 years ago. She said: I have a mission to serve the people, not be a model.
That country’s exports are over US$1500 billion. She has no special housing no electricity no free phone from the Govt budget. She and her husband do their shopping and pays for her groceries. All these AND MORE are free for our politicians.

Today the Lankan Media says it is the third wave ???? which has caused maximum infection. Today the count stands > 17,000 and the number of dead, keeps creeping up. When there was no wave prior how did we reach to the third stage. First was covered up by Govt to get MR elected, claiming success. Second came and went , when Lankans were busy with 20 A. Now that Rajapaksas have got all what they want, Third is now in the open and has taken control of the country. The victory tone has changed to blaming the public and media for the Third, and Rajapaksas are ready to spend money on their favorite projects like Leisure park, stadiums and reviving the already dead Srilankan, so that they can fly free in comfort. Public will pay for Covid related health and economic fallout, and they sure deserve it. Rajapaksas will receive the limited vaccine for them self, (promised by WHO ???),get their care abroad and average Lankans will not have adequate beds for their treatment. Democrazy at work , in splendor, prosperous nation.

Prof. T Vitarana was a Prof. in Microbiology, but not known as a virologist. There should be young virologists in the country today that could be similar to Dr FAUCI. However, Rajakashe rule would not WORK with experts in contagious disease control but with ARMY/NAVY/MARINE officiers. Latest is that Dr Jayaruwan as spokesman to health ministry is outsted today. Without arguing, whether the Hen came first or Egg came first or the Chicken came first and grew up on its own, to become either Cock or Hen, can’t the Sinhalese and Tamils, without talking Cock and Bull stories, get together and sort out the problems to live as Cock, Hen and Chickens, amicably. Without Cock and Hen chickens cannot be produced. Similarly without the Union of Sinhalese and Tamils, Srilanka will produce only Corona Virus, not only in Gampaha and Pehaliyagoda but all over Srilanka. Tisaranee, one time you wrote at length about “inequality in Law dished out under Rajapaksa brothers, where you quoted the accidental death caused by our famous cricketer and how he managed to get bail within 24 hours, the story just died as expected. Now we have a SSP,s daughter who crashed into a motor show room. Allegedly she is 19 and does not have a valid licence and driving some one else car. She is out on mere 10,000 bail. Apparently the same SSP,s son killed Borella traffic OIC IP, in an accident last year. Welcome to Rajapaksas Lawful and Virtuous nation. Colombo Mayor warned of Covid implosion , requesting urgent shut down for two weeks, but doctors Shavendra and GR dosent think so. Sounds like governors in US including some Republican pleading Trump, which he dismissed as FAKE NEWS. According to govt version, prison count of Covid has surpassed 500 and among police personal alone it is above 700. Still Viral expert Tissa was not at all consulted. What are we waiting for ???? Dear Kanapathy Varunan and chiv,
      .
Thanks for both your comments. I shall say more tomorrow; it’s too late now. I need sleep. I’m in Sri Lanka and it’s almost 5.00 am.
      .
Just to indicate what I’ll be saying – I’ll probably do so at the bottom of the pile of comments that I see, Tissaranee has been talking about problems today. Most comments go on and on about who came first. I’ve already submitted something on a later article:
      .
      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/pta-terrorising-sri-lanka-for-42-years/
      .
I’ve jus read up on Prof. Tissa Vithrna. He’s 86, but apart from age this is impressive:
      .
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tissa_Vitharana
      .
Why , Oh why did h go into Parliament and be a Minister under the Rajapaksas? that’s the one thing that prejudices me.
      .
Also, look out for Dr Janapriya. His wife has been indisposed, but is getting better I think. He works really hard at his articles as chiv appreciates.
      .
I agree about the motor showroom crash, too. Actually not much to discuss there if the law is allowed to take its course.
