Well, the Diaspora or the LTTE rump or the disgruntled slightly guilty bunch of expatriates living all over the world, gave it their best shot! Using loads of the extorted but in most cases “willingly” donated funds that have been collected for the “cause” they bought everything from journalists to politicians and all things in between. There was an absolute barrage of “noise” (no doubt similar to the barrage and the noise at Nandikadal at the end of the war) designed to bring negative publicity to the host.
Some Countries were actually coerced into participating to varying degrees. Canada that identified the Tamil people as ideal to fill the demographic gap in their population (namely hard working and willing to live under harsh conditions) as early as the 1970’s has a large vote base of that ethnicity. The Tamil people both from Jaffna and South India are used to harsh weather, so the Canadian winter doesn’t faze them. Since the living conditions in Canada are far superior to what they are used to and they are industrious and driven by economic prosperity, they will do the menial jobs that the white man won’t do and the black man is too lazy to do. So it was not really sympathy that drove the Canadians to take the Tamil people in and now they have to make allowance for their voting rights under a democracy, hence cheap politics carried the day.
India has finally shown their true colours! During Indira Ghandi’s regime it was an accepted fact that India actively promoted terrorist activity in all India’s’ neighbouring Countries. The LTTE was a group funded and trained by India and by not attending CHOGM, what they have established is that they have no real interest in Sri Lankas’ welfare. Instead they have finally tacitly admitted that they have failed to appease the howling mob of malcontents in Tamilnad and have to rethink their strategy. Meanwhile they have driven Sri lanka into the arms of China and possible Russia and Iran and of course Pakistan.
A pineapple grower in Mauritius has little or no significance and may have been bullied by India to back them up.
The Brits behaved true to form. When it was done by us it was all right but when anyone else tries to do it, it is not acceptable. This is the way all the dominant Countries with colonial or pseudo colonial backgrounds tend to behave and it only parodies what their ancestors did with much more aplomb. The wonderfully charismatic presence of Prince Charles overshadowed the rather pathetic attempts of their Prime Minister.
Now I am no supporter of this regime in Sri Lanka. I abhor the family bandism, the catcherism, the “ape miniha can do no wrong syndrome” and all other things that go with this regime. However when trying to rationally asses the aftermath of the CHOGM, I am compelled to say that I feel more good has been done to the Rajapaksa cause that harm.

Don’t forget, according to Australian state report almost 60% of the new arrivals from Sri Lanka after the end of war were Sinhalese.
I have the report, if you really want evidence go find it yourself on Google.

Australia has a large Tamil vote base and despite this the Australian government is supporting the Rajapaksa regime. Australia knows the Rajapaksa regime is covertly encouraging and helping the Tamils to leave the country to deplete the northeast of the Tamil population. The SL navy stops a few boats for propaganda purposes but the rest are helped on their way. Even Namal Rajapaksa is in on this. Abbott has been widely criticised for his support of the Rajapaksa regime.
Harper’s government came to power without the help of Tamils as Tamils were and are not supporters of the conservative Harper government. I tend to think that Canada is taking a principled stand here. What you seem to sidestep is the serious damage the Rajapaksa regime is doing to the country’s democratic institutions, the damage to its name, the corruption, the nepotism, the suppression of dissent, the encouragement of anti minority sentiments that are affecting all the people of the country. You seem to want to protect the Rajapaksas and not care about how the Rajapaksas are damaging the country. It is obvious the Rajapaksas are using the naïveté of people like you to protect himself and his brothers and cronies from not just the war crimes but also the crimes they are committing against all the people of the country.

In Australia the Sinhalese population is twice the Tamil population.
Besides Australia’s interest with Sri Lanka is to stop the Tamil refugees (or Sinhalese refugees for that matter)from arriving in Australia. For that the cooperation from the Sri Lankan Navy is important(especially with the news that the navy is actively involved in the whole thing),hence the reason for all the praising.
Harper’s government may not have come with the Tamil support, but the scenario has changed with a Tamil woman entering parliament under the NDP ticket. It was pressure from the Tamil diaspora (Huge vote Block)that prevented Harper from attending CHOGAM.
I am no fan of Rajapaksa’s. I am grateful to this man for ending the curse of VP the the megalomaniac. But this man did what the heavy weights in the UNP like Athulathmudali, Gamin (my favourite in JRJ Cabinet)and Ranjan Wijeratne could not do.(True Rajives Killing and the 9/11 changed the scenario).

OVER the years, Australia has given sanctuary to thousands of Sri Lankans fleeing a vicious civil war, but most arriving in the past six months have openly admitted to immigration officials that they come seeking work.
Of more than 12,000 asylum-seekers who have come to Australia by boat in the past six months, about 4000 have come from Sri Lanka.
Most of them are young men and appear to have accepted people-smugglers’ assurances that they will find work in Australia.
A high proportion of those coming to Australia by boat from Sri Lanka now were Sinhalese.
Many are fishermen and the vast majority do not claim to be anything but economic refugees.
Refugee advocates said just because asylum-seekers were not Tamils did not mean they were safe in Sri Lanka.
While the bulk of the Sri Lankans seeking asylum over the years had been Tamils, they also included members of other groups, including journalists and civil rights activists, who’d spoken out against the government, the advocates said.
The Sri Lankan government’s position is straightforward.
According to Sri Lankan high commissioner to Canberra, Thisara Samarasinghe, no one in his country faces danger from the authorities and so none of those who came to Australia were genuine refugees.
They were, said Admiral Samarasinghe, “economic opportunists”.
Many of those coming were victims of people-smugglers, Admiral Samaasinghe said. “They believe that if you get into a boat you are an Australian citizen.”
Those asylum-seekers who return home voluntarily are generally entitled to grants of up to $3000 to help them resettle in Sri Lanka or set up businesses there.
That is designed to lessen the likelihood that they will be coerced by the smuggling gangs to make a return trip to Australia to earn enough to repay their “fares”.
Those flown home involuntarily after having asylum applications rejected are not entitled to this financial support.

The point is that Sinhalese are also leaving this island in draws (I am grateful to them) as your Tamil brethren did in the past 40 years (I was and am grateful to them) though the war ended in 2009.
However my elders who traveled far and wide tell me Sinhalese are also increasingly swarming Europe and Americas (I thank the refugees).

The whole World and the UNP think that the CHOGM was a disaster for MR but the State media and the Sinhalese die hearts like you don’t see it that way.
Against all the evidence to the contrary the State media controlled by GOSL reports that CHOGM was a resounding success which is to be expected.
But the biggest problem MR faces is what happens in March. MR is being accused of War Crimes by almost everyone including China and if MR is so confident that he is not guilty why cant he set up an Independent Inquiry and clear himself otherwise he will be forced to face a UN Inquiry with disastrous consequences.
