Al Jazeera Channel Blocked In Sri Lanka

The cable news provider Dialog TV has blocked the Doha based Al Jazeera news network to prevent the channels reports on Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council elections reaching local audiences.

Sources close to the private company said the channel has been unofficially ‘blocked’ on the cable network.

The private television provider may be following unofficial instructions by the Government, the sources said.

The blockage is likely a result of the network’s ongoing coverage of the Northern Provincial Council election that has been intense on international news networks due to the heavy presence of the international press covering the polls in Sri Lanka’s north.

Consumers calling the network to report the problem have been informed by Customer Care representatives that the suspension of the Al Jazeera channel is due to a technical problem on the part of the content-provider, referring to the Qatar based channel.

However it is learnt that no official notification has been received by Al Jazeera regarding the unofficial ‘block’ on the channel in Sri Lanka.

Sources said it was likely the unofficial censorship would be lifted on Al Jazeera once coverage on the Northern poll ends.

The Government frequently uses the Dialog network to conduct its illegal blocking of websites as was recently observed when Colombo Telegraph was unofficially censored on local internet service providers SLT, MOBITEL and Dialog even though the Telecom Regulatory Commission denied it ordered the blockade.

Following repeated consumer queries and complaints, Colombo Telegraph was made available once again on the Dialog network. It remains unclear why the private communications provider regularly follows instructions by the ruling regime in without official notice when other privately owned providers like Etisalat do not adhere to ‘unofficial orders’ by the State.

More unpalatable news to come for the Rajapaksa regime and that’s why Al Jazeera was blocked.

Typical behaviour of dictators to hide the truth from the public. Hope Rajapaksa is made to eat humble pie when the results are out. The thuggery of his goons was seen by the whole world.

International Crisis Group has a mote in its eye

The ICG describes itself on its website as ‘an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflict’ and as ‘the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments, and intergovernmental bodies’.
It has been extremely concerned about human rights in Sri Lanka. However, how sincere are those concerns and how sincere is the ICG about ‘resolving deadly conflict’ and how ‘independent and non-partisan’ is it?
As Nabojsa Malic of the Antiwar.com website wrote in 2005, the organization ‘remained an almost ubiquitous presence in the Western media, which never questioned either their bona
      fides or their expertise’.
It might be instructive to scrutinize the ICG’s credentials, to see how far its commitment to human rights extends. To start with, an examination of some of its leading personnel is indeed illuminating.
The ICG was founded in 1995 by Ambassador Morton I Abramowitz and the late ex-Congressman Stephen J Solarz, among others. Its Chair is former US diplomat Thomas R Pickering.
Its Board includes Abramowitz, the former US National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, former North American treaty Organisation (NATO) Supreme Allied Commander – Europe (SACEUR) General Wesley Clark, former president of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski, former Venezuelan minister Moisés Naím, former NATO Secretary General George Lord Robertson, and former NATO Secretary General Javier Solana.
It’s Senior Advisers (former Board members) include former US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, former US diplomat Kenneth Adelman, former British Tory cabinet minister Christopher, Lord Patten, former Venezuelan Opposition Leader Diego Arria, former Israeli Minister of Internal Security Shlomo Ben-Ami, and the current Israeli President Shimon Peres.
The disproportionate number of former NATO personnel, former US defence establishment officials and Israeli ministers alone should set any unbiased mind to wondering about how ‘independent and non-partisan’ the ICG is. But there is more.
Abramowitz, Armitage, Adelman and ICG co-founder Solarz were all associated with the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), the right-wing think tank centred on Donald Rumsfeld and responsible for plotting much of George W Bush’s colonial adventures.

The simple and effective way to deal with this unethical conduct is to boycott Dialog TV and Dialog Mobile and to encourage others to do so.

In this interview Rajiva is presenting himself as a Government supporter and defending the government. By doing this he has once again proved that he is a traitor not only to his own Liberal Party, but also to majority of the Sinhalese whom he says feel that Tamils are not given equal status. It is time for the members of the Liberal Party to kick Rajiva out of the party. Even he is not true to himself,

Of course the order came from the criminals on top It is they who have much to fear and much to hide from the Sri Lankan people, and the entire world. Shame.
It only points to the fact that these are not free and fair elections, and the outcome already decided by a dishonest, diabolical, disgraceful regime family.

Dialog has contractual obligation to provide transmission of the specified channels to it’s clients. By blocking Al Jazeera, Dialog is in breach of contract. The subscribers for Dialog TV should not only protest en masse but they should band together and seek legal redress in a court of law. Thats that way to teach rthem a lesson. Anyway it is a shameful act from a company of Dialog’s repute.

TNA leaders are talking about freedom, equality, the rule of law and democracy while the government is taking those things away and taking the country down the slope to a North Korean style authoritarian family run cult. Is it any wonder the TNA won so big in the North. If the government is not careful, they might win in the south to….

    Dear GOSL,

Please request Dialog to permanently remove Al Jazeera from their list of channels. I will not pay for a channel which has connections with Muslim extremists a.k.a. Jihadists.

Please read the following article and see for yourself what type of hooligans this Qatar run news network really is.
