Alleged War Criminal Major General Shavendra Silva has been appointed the Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army.
Silva, a close ally of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is the 53rd Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka and the current second-in-command.
He was General Officer Commanding of the military’s controversial 58 Division that battled the LTTE in the Wanni in the final days of the conflict.
The UN Panel of Experts Report alleged that it was in surrendering to Silva’s 58 Division that several LTTE members were shot dead. The Major General was also the subject of a US lawsuit that accused him of war crimes.
In 2010, the Rajapaksa government appointed him as the Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations as the only serving army officer to hold such a post at the time of appointment.
