An Expressway To Disaster

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“One must accept that a nation that suffers or wishes to suffer from national hysteria and political ambition has occasional clouding of the spirit and disturbance of the mind, attacks in which it briefly takes leave of its senses.” – Nietzsche[i]

The Rajapaksas are creating for Sri Lanka an expressway to disaster.

The Sajin Vass GunawardenaChris Nonis incident symbolises the violent mores of Rajapaksa rule.

Gnanasara BBSThe news of a woman of 103 being bludgeoned to death by a boy of 13[ii] demonstrates the degree to which the larger society has become infected by the virus of violence.

The BBS-Wirathu alliance foretells the violent future which awaits this country at Rajapaksa hands.

Monitoring Parliamentarian Gunawardena attacked High Commissioner Nonis physically, in front of witnesses, because he knew that he could get away with it. In the Rajapaksas universe there is only one universal crime – unfaithfulness/opposition to the Rajapaksas. That is always a crime, and one beyond forgiveness. Anything else – including torturing, raping and murdering civilians and prisoners-of-war, tying a government official to a tree, killing a presidential advisor or igniting a religious riot – can and will be shrugged aside if the perpetrators are loyal and useful to the Rajapaksas. Except perhaps when there is constant international pressure, as in the Khuram Shaikh case; since Her Majesty’s government is unlikely to interest itself in the wrong suffered by Dr. Nonis, Parliamentarian Gunawardena has no cause to worry.

The conduct of High Commissioner Nonis is illustrative of the qualities necessary to survive and thrive in Rajapaksa Sri Lanka. A man with an iota of self-respect would not stay in his post after such an indignity. Dr. Nonis reportedly resigned and reportedly took back his resignation. Did he decide to stomach this intolerable insult because he values his job above all else? Did he knuckle down because he fears Rajapaksa vengeance?

According to Dante, the inscription at the entrance to hell ends with the line, ‘Abandon all hope, ye who enter here’[iii]. ‘Abandon all shame, ye who join us’, should be the Rajapaksa watchword.

If Mahinda Rajapaksa is unwilling to investigate the attack on one of his handpicked diplomats, he will not investigate attacks on civilian Tamils during/in the immediate aftermath of the Fourth Eelam War; or any other political crime committed by his kin, kith and acolytes. If Chris Nonis cannot get justice from the Rajapaksas, what hope can victimised Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese have of justice? Presidential conduct in the Vass Gunawardena-Nonis tragicomedy proves that in Rajapaksa Sri Lanka even a sliver of justice is impossible without external pressure/intervention.

In Plato’s eponymous work, Greek philosopher Protogoras argues that to prevent mankind from destructing itself, Zeus bestowed two gifts, aidos (a sense of shame/conscience) and dike (respect for rights of others/sense of justice) on all humans. A civilisation which lacks these two qualities ceases being civilised. Rajapaksa Sri Lanka is becoming such a place; the Vass Gunawardena-Nonis incident, the murder of an old lady by a child and the BBS-Wirathu alliance are only the latest milepost in that expressway to destruction.

BBS, Black Shirts and Hindu Sidekicks

On the BBS Facebook page there is a picture, of Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera standing proudly surrounded by brawny black-clad young men[iv]. The caption invokes merit on this thuggish cohort for providing security for the BBS gathering.

Is this the Rajapaksa/BBS version of Brown Shirts? Will we see them attacking the opposition and terrorising ethno-religious minorities, especially during upcoming national elections?

The title of the BBS gathering was ‘The Way to Build the Nation’.

As many speakers, starting with Kirama Wimalajothi Thera, emphasised, ‘Nation’ is not Lankan, or even Sinhala, but Sinhala-Buddhist. According to the CEO of the BBS, “There aren’t many nations in this country. There are only Sinhalese in this country. The Muslims in this country must be called Sinhala-Muslims and the Tamils must be called Sinhala-Tamils.”[v] Only Sinhala-Buddhist culture should be allowed in this country, he said; and Wesak Day must be made the National Day. (So are casinos in or out, as per Sinhala-Buddhist culture? What about popular colonial legacies from trousers to trains to tea?).

The BBS is planning to prepare a new constitution, according to its CEO: “We will bring this draft and create a discourse about it. The name of this country must be changed to Sinhale. The country needs a new constitution to protect the rights of Sinhala-Buddhists.”

What a red-herring that would be during the election season! What better way to prevent Sinhala-Buddhists from focusing on real problems than to create a season of minority-bashing!

According to Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera, “An NGO clique which wants to destroy Buddhist Renewal is behind Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero. Sobhitha Thero is supposed to become the joint candidate. Is the executive (presidency) the problem in this country?” Obviously the Rajapaksas still fear a joint oppositional candidate committed to abolishing the presidential system; impeding this seems part of the BBS’ duties.

Another task the BBS is trying to perform for the Rajapaksas is to create dissension between Hindu-Tamils and Christian/Catholic-Tamils and to reignite Tamil-Muslim clashes. Gnanasara Thera proclaimed that the BBS is “ready to become the leader of the Hindu people”. President of Sri Lanka Hindu Association, N Arukkanthan, was a speaker at the BBS gathering. According to Mr. Arukkanthan, who has become Gnanasara Thera’s Hindu sidekick, “The Hindus must unite with Sinhala-Buddhists. (I) propose that the South Asian region should be proclaimed a Hindu-Buddhist region. All Buddhists must unite to prevent conversions. Bodu Bala Sena is doing good work for it.”

If Tamils can be divided along religious lines, if Tamil-Muslim clashes can be reignited, it will be of enormous benefit, politically and electorally, for the Rajapaksas. Most Tamils are as susceptible to lies, false threats and non-existent enemies as most Sinhalese and most Muslims. Thanks to the LTTE, there is a history of Tamil-Muslim animosity, which can be mined by the BBS. The possibility of the BBS reaching out to RSS type Hindu fanatics in India as a way of building an anti-Islamic/Christian bridge to Premier Modi cannot be ruled out either.

A lay speaker at the gathering referred to ‘Sinhala Monkhood’ (Sinhala Bhikshu Wansaya). He is more right than he realised. According to the Buddha, “He who controls his hand, controls his foot, controls his speech and is well-controlled in al respects, delights in meditation, is composed, solitary and content – him they call a bhikku.”[vi]

Going by that criterion, the BBS convention was not a gathering of Buddhist monks, but a gathering of Sinhala-monks. They are guided not by the Buddha’s teachings, but by the apocryphal tales of Monk Mahanama. And it may take decades, if not more, and perhaps a catastrophe or two, to remove the poison they are sowing from the politico-psychological landscape.

Gnanasara Thera lauded the ‘boys and girls on the internet’ for greatly strengthening the BBS. A recent report by the CPA demonstrates the sort of work these ‘boys and girls’ are engaged in[vii]. Perhaps the most deadly contribution of the BBS will be the envenoming of the minds of the next generation – a necessity for the Rajapaksa dynastic project and a disaster for the nation.

In this ugly Vass gunawardena vs. Nonis saga there are 4 losers and one victor.

The losers are 1) Nonis who was badly beaten up2) Vass gunawardena ,the uneducated wharf clerk who dislocated a toe in savagely attacking Nonis3) President MR who is no doubt embarrassed because his his Monitoring MP Vass Gona is nothing but a thug.

There is but one winner. That is Shenuka Seneviratne, the foreign Ministry secretary. She made all the above to be losers since Nonis calling her by a four letter word triggered Vass gonna to attack him.She is so close to him.Even the president lost his image coz of Shenuka’s manipulation of Vass .Vass.Guna is planning to make Shenuka next Ambassador in New York, although even the President hates her.Such is her power.

      Tisaranee Gunasekara,

      “The Barbarians Within Our Gates.” The subtitle is “Sinhalese civilization has collapsed”;

Would be an appropriate book to be written by an enlightened Sinhalese – and there are a good number of them too including the author of the present article.

Lotus has made some valid points: just to add that if Sajin was ‘playing at home’ he may well have pulled out a firearm in his alcoholic haze, and secondly, that vixen-like Kshenuka has been an inveterate tale carrier, stirring shit wherever she goes, and when ever she spots a chance to get back at those she takes a dislike to.

Do NOT expect them to be admonished by our Prez; Sajin is an alumnus of the Medamulana School of Diplomacy (among other alumni are Mervyn, Duminda and Nimal Lansa).

The current perception is that Rajapaksa Hegemony has taken over the UPFA/SLFP and people do not want dynasties.

      What can the writers do?

Hema Senanayake, thanks for a very good analysis. Can you be the Anonymous Author and a Produce Sri Lankan version of Common Sense in Sinhala, Tamil and English? You will do as much service to Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho, just like Thomas Paine did for America and France. You can expand this write up, and get there.

Say, Because I have Common Sense, I will not vote for Mr. Rajapaksa, and widely distribute it in the Land.

Rajapaksa had the opportunity. The power corrupted them. The People are sick of them. They even used Buddhism towards their ends. Even Sinhala Buddhists are fed up them, and they are showing their true colors.

An Anonymous Author like Thomas Paine is needed with a Common Sense Pamphlet to expose the King, King George, the Rajapaksa Clan. Read, the Common Sense Pamphlet , by Thomas Paine, that inspired the American Revolution along with the other events. Common Sense (pamphlet)

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_(pamphlet)

Produce a Commons sense Pamphlet for Sri Lanka and say why it is in the best interest of the people of Sri Lanka to remove the King, aka Rajapaksa Dynasty from power and let the Republic be a Republic and Not a dynasty. This Pamphlet, in Sinhala, Tamil and English, need to be sent to each and every Sri Lankan Citizen, just like Thomas Paine’s Common Sense pamphlet.

Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2]

Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[4] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[5]

Immediate future is looking indeed dangerous.

Sinhala Buddhist racism, now aided by Hinud fanaticism is raised to fever pitch by BBS. Many have swallowed the pill of racist-religious hysteria already.

There is little doubt this is the strategy employed by the corrupt “patritos” of Hambantota to retain power at the next election. Divide and rule! Play on fear! Always works.

Where are the spineless, in-fighting, self-serving monkeys of the opposition? Still bickering about personal glory and positions like school-yard kids? Shame on you.

    Cheers!

I see scary similarities between BBS monkeys and Golden Dawn fascists in Greece.

Soon BBS monkeys will start walking around at night beating up people they condemn as anti Sinhalese Buddhist.

This is nothing but a fascist group. Rajapassa Clan will fail to control these thugs at the end.

Opposition must mobilize the country to face these thugs manipulated and used by ruling despotic family from Hambantota.

However, the opposition is busy taking care of their own greed for power instead.

We are truly in a deep hole. And we keep digging.

It is unfortunate from your point of view that, it is being lobbied and egged on by the Tamil Diasporas! I have always said that, the Tamils will rescue SL from Rajapaksas!

Rs 80 ML to renovate Opposition Leader’s House- some questions

Rs 80 ML to renovate Opposition Leader’s House passed by the Cabinet – A news

    Original cost was Rs. 30 ML needed Rs. 50 million more. It’s so high, why? Is it because the estimation was wrong…. or was so bad for not giving a repair for 15 years…. or because the inflation is rising so fast? Other key questions remain are;

    • Why would Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe need a renovation at this last minute?

    • Did he asked for it?

    • What time period that will be covered by this work? 4-5 or more years.

    • When was it last done up with?

    • This Rs. 80 million can’t be a current expenditure, it’s a capital investment.

    • In fact Mr. RW is not going to be there in that house after PE, January

    • Someone else from future SLFP will occupy it when Mr. RW becomes next PM (Parliment/ Leader of the country and will be at TT

    • Where are the cost details of the similar renovation work on TT? (in how many BILLIONS?)

This slogan: “The Sinhala Buddhist” country- we saw it as far back as 1960 when the “Trio” – Phillip Gunawardane, Mettananda and W.S.Karunananda campaigned under the banner of MEP to bring this concept and form a Government. What was the peoples’ “salute” to them? A TOTAL REJECTION. If people half a century ago had that wisdom; do you think the people living in this 21st century will fall a prey to this type of ill conceived fanaticism? I doubt it very much.

Re. “Alleged” assault on Dr. Nonis. The President will say “Boys are Boys” and perhaps rephrase it to say “Boys and Girls had a game of love”. Just forget it. The caravan will move and the dogs will keep barking.

This is similar to the zionist plan. Make the people feel their nation is connected to the religion. Make them feel their country/religion is under threat, demonized the other side (Arabs), in this case the minorities in Sri Lanka, and spread lies that they are an existential threat to their religion, attack them at the slightest excuse, even making up false excuses, and have your base support you no matter what, no matter what the violence against the other side is.
Sri Lanka was never an extremist nation. It was a very secular nation, and all religions lived in peace, without major divisions. The BBS is working under the direction of a faceless but brutal entity, and we should all be afraid. The scoundrels at the top don’t care for the well being of the Sri Lankan people and their safety, they are being rewarded handsomely, so they are silently encouraging what will end up very badly.
This dirt bag in saffron robes should have been stopped long time ago. It seems the Rajapaksa’s value their powers and being in power, more than the peace in our nation.
We are at the edge of a precipice, and once we fall, it is too late.

The hilarious confusion that resulted when Kehemalla Rambukwalla confirmed/denied Dr Nonis’ resignation was further enhanced when the press office said it was a ‘genuine mistake’; as opposed to the fraudulent mistakes that he makes as a daily routine?
The diplomatic community is aghast at the treatment suffered by the high-profile Nonis. His steadfast defence of Sri Lanka, regularly falling back on our ‘2500 year-old civilisation’, and his plummy affection of an ‘accent’ impressed those easily taken in. The only redemption available to him is to resign and walk away. This was never his scene. He is a lapsed doctor who felt that a diplomatic post would help his family business interests. Alas, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bad career move. He was a fish out of water in this company of parvenus and thugs. He thought he was defending ‘mother lanka’ – he was NOT. He was defending a crooked Regime from the perfect legitimate answers expected for their actions. How will Nonis face those with whom he has to work with again; they know now that a slap and kick will not deter him.

In the grand scheme of things, this is the ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’ image the crafty Rajapakses image builders have contrived. The Bad Cops are the BBS and the Rajapakses will emerge as the Good Cop trying to keep the country together despite adversities. There’s another Greek saying “Before the Gods destroy, they first make them mad”. Judging from the insane activities by the Rajapakse regime, the destruction might have already started happening.

The picture of the Svengali-like Gnanasara masquerading as a Buddhist priest and surrounded by a motley crew of ne’er-do-wells is one of the most depressing to come out of Sri Lanka at any time. I am so sorry that our minorities – creatures of circumstance, who through no fault of theirs are destined to share this island paradise with us – have this to add to their list of woes. The many decent Sinhalese who surely cannot condone the actions of this evil organisation must speak up and call a halt to this madness. Failure to do so will only see us ALL in tears before long.

Dr Nonis can’t speak the truth, because he has been telling lies on behalf of the least educated regime in the history of Sri Lanka. It is not that easy to break his habits to admit the truth; because it is not that easy give up the money and fame; the whole world knows this. The least educated regime in the history of Sri Lanka don’t have the ability to see the Diasporas’ skills and wealth. But licking the Chinese communist party members’ boots, paying high interest rates for the China’s loans, and placing the country in bankruptcy. Above all, placing India and the Indian Ocean in danger.

Tisaranee. You say: The conduct of High Commissioner Nonis is illustrative of the qualities necessary to survive and thrive in Rajapaksa Sri Lanka…….Did he knuckle down because he fears Rajapaksa vengeance?

You forgot to mention that this is par for the course (standard practice) for the genes that are sloshing around in our veins. Look at the vengeance of one of our previous despotic Kings Rajasinghe II, as documented by Robert Knox (below).

Interestingly enough, it was the cruelty and arbitrary executions of the Kandyan Kings that caused the Kandyan Chiefs to ask for outside intervention in the affairs of the State and sign the Kandyan Treaty asking the British to takeover. Will that desperate desire for outside help in 2014-15 result in UN intervention via the UNHRC, and British (+US, EU, and Canadian) sanctions in 2015? It is indeed an interesting parallel.

    Quote:

Thus he often deals with those, whose Children are his Attendants. I mentioned before, that young Men of the best Families in the Land, are sought out to wait upon the King in his Court. These after they have served here some small time, and have as it were but seen the Court, and known his Customs and Manners, he requiteth them by cutting off their Heads, and putting them into their Bellies: other faults none do know. Heretofore, as it is reported, he was not so Cruel, but now none escapes, that serves in his Palace. Then he recruits his Slain out of the Countries, by giving Orders to his Dissava’s or Governors to send him others to Court. Whither they go like an Ox to the Slaughter, but with far more heavy hearts. For both they and their Parents full well know what end the King’s honorable Service will bring them to. Howbeit there is no remedy. Being thus by Order sent unto the Court, their own Parents must provide for and maintain them, until the King is pleased to call them to his Use which it may be will not be in some years. Sometimes it happens, that the Boys thus brought, before the King makes use of them about his Person, are grown too big, and so escape. But those that are employed in the Palace, enjoy this favour, That all such Taxes, Customs, or other Duties belonging to the King, which their Fathers were wont to pay, are released, until such time as they are discharged from the King’s Employment; which is always either by Execution, or by being given to somebody for perpetual Bondmen. During the time of the King’s favour, he is never admitted to go home to Visit his Parents and Friends. The Malekind may come to see him, but no Women are admitted, be it his Mother that bare him. And after he is killed, tho’ for what no man knows, he is accounted a Rebel and Traitor against the King: and then his Father’s House, Land and Estate is seized on for the King. Which after some time by giving of Fees and Gifts to the great ones, they do redeem again: And sometimes the whole Family and Generation perish, as I said before. So that after a Lad is taken into the King’s Palace, his Kindred are afraid to acknowledge Alliance to him. But these matters may more properly be related, when we come to speak of his Tyranny.

Nor is his wrath appeased by the Execution of the Malefactor, but oftentimes he punisheth all his Generation; it may be kills them alltogether, or gives them all away for Slaves.

He seems to be naturally disposed to Cruelty: For he sheds a great deal of blood, and gives no reason for it. His Cruelty appears both in the Tortures and Painful deaths he inflicts, and in the extent of his punishments, viz, upon whole Families for the miscarriage of one in them. For when the King is displeased with any, he does not alwayes command to kill them outright, but first to torment them, which is done by cutting and pulling away their flesh by Pincers, burning them with hot Irons clapped to them to make them confess of their Confederates; and this they do, to rid themselves of their Torments, confessing far more than ever they saw or knew. After their Confession, sometimes he commands to hang their two Hands about their Necks, and to make them eat their own flesh, and their own Mothers to eat of their own Children; and so to lead them thro the City in public view to terrifie all, unto the place of Execution, the The Dogs follow Prisoners to execution.Dogs following to eat them. For they are so accustomed to it, that they seeing a Prisoner led away, follow after. At the place of Execution, there are alwayes some sticking upon Poles, others hanging up in quarters upon Trees; besides, what lyes killed by Elephants on the ground, or by other ways. This place is alwayes in the greatest High-way, that all may see and stand in awe. For which end this is his constant practice.

The King makes use of them (Elephants) for Executioners; they will run their Teeth through the body, and then tear it in pieces, and throw it limb from limb. They have sharp Iron with a socket with three edges, which they put on their Teeth at such times; for the Elephants that are kept have all the ends of their Teeth cut to make them grow the better, and they do grow out again.

Israeli airline urged to stop ‘bullying’ of women by ultra-orthodox passengers

Petition organiser says airline should find way to accommodate religious requirements without breaching other people’s rights

      Harriet Sherwood
The Guardian, Tuesday 30 September 2014 14.01 BST

Israel’s national airline, El Al, has been criticised for allowing ultra-orthodox Jewish men to disrupt flights by refusing to be seated next to women.

A petition on change.org is demanding that the carrier “stop the bullying, intimidation and discrimination against women on your flights”.

One flight last week, from New York’s JFK airport to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, descended into chaos according to passengers, after a large group of haredim, or ultra-orthodox Jews, refused to take their seats next to women, in accordance with strict religious customs.

The episode has prompted other women to come forward with similar stories on international flights to and from Tel Aviv.

Amit Ben-Natan, a passenger on last week’s El Al flight from New York, said take-off was delayed after numerous and repeated requests by ultra-orthodox men for female passengers to be moved.

“People stood in the aisles and refused to go forward,” she told the Ynet website. “Although everyone had tickets with seat numbers that they purchased in advance, they asked us to trade seats with them, and even offered to pay money, since they cannot sit next to a woman. It was obvious that the plane won’t take off as long as they keep standing in the aisles.”

Another passenger on the flight, named only as Galit, said ultra-orthodox passengers had suggested she and her husband sit separately to accommodate their religious requirements. She refused, but added: “I ended up sitting next to a haredi man who jumped out of his seat the moment we had finished taking off and proceeded to stand in the aisle.”

On a different flight, Elana Sztokman, executive director of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance, refused to accede to a request to move seats, triggering “frantic negotiations”, she said, between ultra-orthodox men and airline staff.

“What happened to me on this flight isn’t that different from what happens on almost every flight,” she told Voice of Israel radio. “You get on a plane, and the plane is about to take off but a whole bunch of ultra-orthodox men start playing around, moving around, whispering, moving back and forth trying to find different seats … Anyone who’s ever travelled on El Al has experienced this.”

Sharon Shapiro, from Chicago, the organiser of the online petition – which had attracted about 1,000 backers by Tuesday morning – said it was “not right that female passengers are being intimidated or harassed. It’s one thing to ask nicely, but if someone says no, they should not be put under pressure.”

There was a genuine dilemma for some ultra-orthodox Jews. “What most people don’t understand is that it’s not personal”, but considered by some to be a religious obligation.

Airlines should seek a way of accommodating the religious requirements of passengers without breaching others’ civil rights, she said. “I’m not quite sure why El Al asks passengers to sort these things out among themselves. It would be better if people can get on a plane knowing they’re sitting somewhere they feel comfortable. Otherwise, it adds to tensions and misunderstandings between religious and secular [passengers].”

The petition says: “If a passenger was being verbally or physically abusive to airline staff, they would immediately be removed from the plane … If a passenger was openly engaging in racial or religious discrimination against another passenger or flight attendant, they would immediately be removed from the plane. Why then, does El Al Airlines allow gender discrimination against women?

“Why does El Al Airlines permit female passengers to be bullied, harassed, and intimidated into switching seats which they rightfully paid for and were assigned to by El Al Airlines?

“One person’s religious rights does not trump another person’s civil rights.”

It suggests that El Al reserves a few rows of segregated seating available in advance for a fee.

Among comments posted on change.org, Judith Margolis from Jerusalem said: “The behaviour involving harassing women in the name of religious observance is outrageous. That airlines allow some passengers to disrupt flights is unacceptable.”

Myla Kaplan of Haifa said: “I no longer feel comfortable flying on El Al due to the bullying and delays and general humiliation of being asked to move out of a seat I reserved in advance.”

In a statement, El Al said it made “every effort possible to ensure a passenger’s flight is as enjoyable as possible while doing our utmost to maintain schedules and arrive safely at the destination.

“El Al is committed to responding to every complaint received and if it is found that there are possibilities for improvement in the future, those suggestions will be taken into consideration.”

Female passengers on other airlines flying to and from Israel, such as British Airways and easyJet, have also been asked to move seats at the request of ultra-orthodox men. Some airlines close toilets for periods during flights to allow men to gather to pray.

The outcry over flights comes against a backdrop of moves by hardline ultra-orthodox communities in Israel to impose dress codes on women, restrictions on where they can sit on public buses, segregated checkout queues in supermarkets and the removal of women’s images from advertising hoardings.

Sztokman – whose flight came at the end of a US speaking tour on her new book, The War on Women in Israel: A Story of Religious Radicalisation and Women Fighting for Freedom – said such demands had increased over the past decade.

“A lot of what we’re seeing today … is about the erasure of women’s faces from the public sphere, the erasure of women’s names from newspaper articles, the refusal to let women talk on radio stations

“It’s a whole array of practices of women’s exclusion and women’s degradation that has got much worse.”

Tissa, you forgot to add “Ruthless Ltte” in your article. But you never forget to blame on ltte for AntiMuslims feeling among tamils. But ltte leadership accepeted their mistakes and called muslim leaders to work together for the betterments of tamil and muslim people. But these greedy muslim politicians are licking the feet of death lover rajapaksa for ministerial posts to make some money. You better blame those greedy hakims and rishads for the current situation of “leaderless” muslims.

You can kill ltte’s heart beat, but you can’t kill its soul

WakeUp my dear buddhist brothers. You can make a change. Realise the truth and act. If we don’t then face the END!!!!

Revolution begins in everywhere. But in srilanka? When?

“The Rajapaksas are creating for Sri Lanka an expressway to disaster.”

TG should give us the timeline for the creation of this expressway. After all, MR has been President for a while now, and the only disasters have been for Navi Pillay, Channel 4, the LTTE, and Tisaranee. While the other 3 other have mostly calmed down or disappeared from existence, TG is yet to apply the brakes. I don’t know the full details behind this year-round anti-Rajapakse bash fest, however I highly suggest TG [Edited out]

Get the close up pictures of these thugs, make a data base, publish them in social media and warn them about the dire consequences they and their family members and accomplices would have to face when the regime is one day buried. Next time when these thugs come to attack the civilians do not flee but face them and attack them with whatever weapons the civilians can find and improvise, block the roads, cut trees on to the roads, spread nails and spikes when their vehicles arrive along roads, fell trees on their vehicles, use acid attacks on them……………..
