It was a sad day in the year 2009 that we remember today. As far as we Sri Lankan Tamils of the North and East are concerned we have to face many obstacles even today. On one hand Covid 19 is playing havoc among us. On the other hand we face repression by the State in many ways. Personally, I would be called upon in a day or two to answer criminal charges for saying;
1. that the Tamil language was the language of the earliest inhabitants of this Island 2. that Mahawamsa is not a historical document
3. that the LTTE took up to arms because of repression and discrimination by the Sri Lankan State
4. that over a lakh of people were killed in Mullivaikal at the close of the War and
5. that the Armed Forces have taken over Civil functions and the North is kept under Army Rule, all of which are true but have been made out to be criminal. I am told by these statements I have propagated national and racial hatred that constitutes incitement to violence!
Thus repressive and reprehensible activities we face here in the North and East continuously.
It is amidst them that we remember our dead who passed away at Mullivaikal in May 2009.
The British and the Tamils were tricked by the Sinhalese leaders at the time of Independence. Many promises were given prior to Independence that minorities would not be discriminated against and they would be treated with fraternal feelings.
But within one year of Independence one million Tamils were deprived of their franchise.
We Tamil speaking are the majority in the North and East of Sri Lanka. But our individuality is at stake. There are steps being taken inter alia to grab our traditional home lands to introduce Buddhism forcibly into areas where there are no indigenous Buddhists living, with Military help, to have our Resources plundered, to colonise settlements with Sinhala Colonists who have been brought from elsewhere into Tamil speaking areas and to have the demography of the area changed and to destroy war memorials.
It was to protect us from such genocidal acts on the part of the successive governments that our youth took up to arms. But due to the geo politics of Big Powers they were routed in 2009 together with over a lakh of innocents in Mullivaikal.
Justice to those, whose dear ones disappeared, eludes them even today. But those who committed, aided and abetted brutal criminal acts against our people are being given important Government positions and diplomatic postings.
Today we witness the sorry spectacle of Memorials erected in remembrance of those who died at the end of the war, 12 years ago, being broken and destroyed. The International Community is unable to do anything about it.
A government in power seems to be able to attack and harm our people in Sri Lanka but the International Community can do nothing about it!
In 2013 the then Conservative Prime Minister of Great Britain Hon’ David Cameron visited us in Jaffna. At that stage he promised us that Justice and Accountability for what happened in Mullivaikal would be ensured. But anything tangible are still to be done. Even now the Conservatives are in power in Great Britain.
When Independence from Britain to Ceylon was given, the Sinhala Leaders of that time deceived the British by saying that they would look after the interests of the minorities for certain. But as soon as Independence was obtained over a million Tamils from the Upcountry were denied their citizenship. Thereafter there had been periodical discriminatory steps taken to undermine the safety and well being of the Tamil speaking in Sri Lanka.
Britain failed to ensure that there would be safety and fair play as far as the minorities in Ceylon were concerned. The mistake made at the time of Independence wherein adequate safeguards against the hegemony of the majority were not ensured by giving a federal constitution to Ceylon, still has its adverse effects on Sri Lanka even today.
But I would say that it is time now for the Conservative Government of Britain to ensure justice and fair play to our people. The mistake made during the term of office of Prime Minister Hon’ Clement Atlee must now be corrected. I make this humble request on behalf of our people.
It is certainly heartening to see that the Democratic Party which worked hard in the UN to bring Resolutions against the Sri Lankan Government is now back in power in the US.
US together with Great Britain must ensure Justice and Accountability for the crimes perpetrated in Mullivaikal in May 2009.
Thus taking Sri Lanka before the International Criminal Court stands a priority for the US and UK and other Countries who value democracy and fair play.
It is high time an International body of Experts on Military Law be asked to inquire into the need for the Military which committed severe human rights violations during the war, to continue to prolong their stay for the past 12 years. The Government has publicly assured that the LTTE is no more. It has assured our Country that there are no semblance of any attempts at violence of any sort in the North and East up to now. If so why should the Armed Forces continue to be in the North and East. It is not enough to say in a Democracy for security reasons without spelling out what those security reasons are. We find the Military holding on to over 60000 acres of State Land and over 3000 acres of private land. We find them getting involved directly or indirectly in cultivation, fishing, trading, expropriation of our resources and so on. We find them helping those who are interested in land grabbing in the North and East coming from elsewhere. We find them aiding and abetting those who are trying to distort history. We find them trying to brainwash our people, especially the youngsters, by working on their poverty and indigent circumstances. Therefore security reasons cannot be the motive for the Military continuing to occupy our traditional homelands for twelve years after the war. We must be told the actual reasons and the reasons must be investigated by an International Panel of Military Law experts.
I had suggested when I was Chief Minister that if lack of space was the reason not to house the Military in Colombo and its suburbs, the Government could divide its Military into nine parts and establish their one ninth Military in each of the nine Provinces. Why should the Government garrison such a large contingent of the Military in the North and East alone? Does the Government intend placing an occupational Army in the North and East for ever curtailing, controlling, commanding and covering our people by spying on them under the cover of intelligence gathering? Are we not entitled to a free, democratic and un-interfered existence in our traditional homelands?
Surely the Police could now take over security since it is peace time now.
It is important in order to bring an end to the suffering of the Tamil speaking majority in the North and East of Sri Lanka that an internationally supervised Referendum be conducted in the North and East. That is the most democratic step that the International Community could take to ensure peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
This attempt to usher in a Referendum among the majority Tamil speaking people in the North and East must be ensured by not only US and the UK but also Canada, India, Australia, the European Union and many other Countries which value Democracy and Democratic institutions.
An internationally supervised referendum among the people of the North and East would no doubt ensure Democracy, Peace and preserve Human Rights in this region. May I appeal to Congresswoman Deborah K. Ross, Congresswoman Kathy Manning, State Senator Wiley Nickel and State Senator Jeff Jackson, who are all attending this event, to work towards an internationally supervised referendum in the Tamil-speaking Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka to find a permanent solution to the 70 year old Tamil question as well as to fully co-operate in our efforts to bring Sri Lanka before the ICC.
May we all Tamils the World over take an oath on this day, that despite all obstacles, we would in unison work for Justice and Accountability for the Genocide committed at Mullivaikal in 2009? I thank you.

The so called Muslim home guards in the east, who were armed by the Sri Lankan state , killed raped and ethnically cleansed thousands of Hindu Tamils who are the real owners of the east. Their numbers were far higher that the Muslims who were expelled from the north. The northern Muslims have been allowed to return but not the Tamil Hindus who were expelled by these Islamic Home guards in the east. You are very quiet about this

The proposal is totally silent on +50% Tamils living OUTSIDE North East.
Is he aware (or can you inform him if he is not) that with the formation of Ealam in NE Sinhalese do not want a SINGLE Tamil in areas outside Ealam. This includes all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion or the date of arrival ( Some Tamils practise Hinduism, some Christianity , others Islam, some are as ancient as the Sinhalese, others arrived during the colonials.)

Referendum for what is not answered by TGTE, whose plea the senior Justice has now adopted to propagate. TGTE saying that the referendum will include many options & it is not a YES-NO referendum Tamil Eelam. Say that all TGTE’s options are listed, then one for them is current unitary government where Sinhala Chauvinist dominates government will continue to rule Tamils. Until North East can freely vote, IC supervision in elections is nothing. TGTE has no idea that almost all elections in Lankawe is these days supervised by international monitoring agents. They always certify the elections as fair. So far, no international committee has found fault enough in the elections conducted in Lankawe to reject them. Even in the North, in last election, Sumanthiran’s gang oppressed Mrs. Raviraj and stole the election. That was agreeable for EU agents supervised the election. Soon Sampanthar Aiya will be quitting soon and Sumanthiran will take over. Many Tamils’ enemy wolves are praying this to happen sooner than latter. The wolves’ fault Sumanthiran on all but praise on election victory. Bottom line is : “Tamils’ opinion must be obtained for a separate country or only the privilege of self-determination only under Interim North East government, not under any other circumstances. Period.”

The important question is not what is going to be in the referendum, “but why a referendum” is! Until TGTE or the Justice CV answer to that question in a way UN or other international organizations can accept, it is only a political campaign but nothing serious. Though no government has named that they reject TGTE, TGTE has not done anything to make international government accept it. So, instead of it pressing the International government directly to go for one “Genocide / War Crime inquiry”, it seems like it is trying cunning short cuts to boost is popularity. Though many time TGTE claimed that even Catalonia has had its referendum, Catalonia referendum is not acceptable to International governments. By that referendum Catalonia politicians forced to run out the country. Those same Catalonia politicians said in TGTE’s meeting, to TGTE leaders that their type of referendum is not suitable for Eelam Tamils. Same time, the problem with asking for referendum is it “Putting the Cart Before the Horse” thus disturbing war crime investigation. International governments can call for a referendum only if TGTE or Justice CV have answered the question “Why a Referendum” by a proper methodology. They will not be able to accept Chief Justice’s or TGTE’s affidavit of long list of complaint against Appe Aanduwa.

TGTE & Justice CV need to know, at least now, IC governments has much longer list of complaint against Tamils from Appe Aanduwa. Proving Genocide/War Crime is the only way to make them to accept the Tamils complaints. If TGTE is not wedging the INGO who are fighting along Tamils for their justice, the job of proving the Genocide/War crime is ABC, in an International court. Even Appe Aanduwa feel so and it is against any international organization who is participating with Tamils. America, Britain, EU & Canada’s governments know the people directly addressing to them and their agents try to keep in contact with the people. Tamil politicians should respect this process of people communicating with the IC governments and should not try to use the people to push through their political agenda. This will make them to abandon the people too. TGTE must upgrade them and make IC to accept them as the diaspora’s authentic elected organization. They should not imitate a government in exile and mess up in Thayaga politics. That is the job for Sampanthar Ayya, Justice CV & Ponnampalam. They three should work together on all Tamils political solution. We know how difficult to work together. The self interest groups cannot be 100% pushed out of their political organizations. So, getting along with other parties is not that easy as saying it. But the object of the Tamil political parties must be is to keep their organizations as clean as possible and take unified solution on Tamils’ political solution matters. That does not mean that they should abandon their individual political philosophies all together. If Justice CV cannot make TNA, the main representative of North East, to call for Referendum, then his call for referendum is assumed as not coming from Tamils. So, he needs to take these decisions with other two elected Tamils representative parties. If he makes his decisions alone in that of important matters and declare it, then unifying for decisions will be a nightmare. Genocide/ War crime is first. No political cunning techniques to miniscule it, please!

+51% of Tamils consider Sinhala Buddhist society is superior to any Tamil only enclave:
1)
Despite intense, unrelenting propaganda of discrimination, violence, loot, rape, murder or even genocide not a SINGLE TAMIL FAMILY who lived among the Sinhalese in the South during or after the war has relocated the residence to Jaffna.
2)
Tamil politicos who promoted LTTE as the sole representative of Tamils carried out their political activities while living within the enemy.

Ravi Perera, Prabaharan played the game all wrong despite being advised by Tamil civil society about correct way, while Sinhalese played the game correctly and won, by pretending to go along with the world and not doing so. Now Sinhalese are playing the game wrongly, and if Tamils play it properly, they will win. First of all, Tamils forge unity among themselves by getting rid of self seeking trouble makers like Sumanthiran and Gajendrakumar. Secondly youths must take the lead, not trusting the politicians who are continuing to hood wink Tamils. Youths must chart their progress by listening to Tamil civil society who had always been correct, giving guidance without any selfish agendas. Start a new organisation with new flag Tri-colour which should be secular (Purple for Christians, Orange for Hindus and Buddhists and Green for Muslims) with dharma chakra in the center, which cannot be objected to by Sinhala nationalists. Also a national anthem probably one of Barathiyar’s freedom songs. This will bring victory for sure.

The whole international community accepts that historically Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese. (I have interacted extensively with the embassies in Colombo to confirm this)But they also are of the view that Tamils in Sri Lanka have lived for a long time and should be given some sort of devolution. Now no body is telling us to give federalism and they all think the clamour for North East merger is not reasonable.
So as long as the Tamils keep harping on federaism and North east merger, we will be safe.
When the apartheid was on in South Africa the whole world came to the rescue of the blacks. Now the blacks are subjecting the whites to untold sufferings (Farmers). The world is not showing the same sort of concern for the whites.
The whole world unanimously agrees the land historically belongs to Blacks.
Sri Lankan situation is looked at similarly when it comes to Sinhalese vs Tamils.
The world will punish the sinhala governments for all the undemocratic things they are doing to their own population and they certainly will not take land from us and give it to you demalu (Certainly not a large chunk like North East)

Ravi Perera, can you show a single document where the whole international community has accepted that historically Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese. In contrast there are documents which state that northern and eastern provinces are areas of historical habitation of Tamil speaking people.
1. Indo-Sri Lanka accord of 1897
2. Oslo accord of 2002.
Both these have international acceptance, from which Sinhalese cannot escape.
Recent archaeological findings shows that people who inhabited the island in pre-historic times are Veddhas (for over 70,000 years in eastern, central and south eastern parts) and Dravidians with similar language and civilization to those in Tamil Nadu (for over 20,000 years in north eastern, northern, western and south western parts). Genetic finding shows that both Sinhalese and Tamils are mixture of Dravidians, Bengalis and Veddhas with varying proportion. This demonstrates that Sinhalese are as foreigners as Tamils and Tamils are as indigenous as Sinhalese.
It is due to these facts that international community has asked Sinhalese to share power and land with Tamils in just and effective manner.

Nothing will happen. If a referundam is to take place, it should be for an Indepedent Territory within the Union of India. LTTE had missed a number of golden opportunities. We had to bear in mind that there is a SAARC which is mainly for India’s interests. SAARC is quite different from European Union. European Union has a Parliament, but not SAARC. Time and again I wish to remind that Sri Lanka will be divided into two Independent Territories and annex to the Union of India. Moreover, Pakistan will be split into three Regions. It is a mater of time. No sooner Pakistan-controlled Kashmir is annexed, one can guess what will happen to Bangladesh and Myanmar. Western democratic countries will support India on this subject. Tamils have been fooled by EVR Periyar and DMK stalwarts like CN Annadurai and M.Karunanithy. Periyar is from Karnataka where he couldn’t thrive and started the so-called Sravidian concept. CN Annadurai is a mixture of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu who followed EVR Periyar. M.Karunanithy is from Andhra Pradesh (now known as Telungu) who also followed Dravidian concept. The Dravidian concept was rejected by Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh including the Telungu region. Even in Sangam literature Dravidian concept was never mentioned or never given due importance. These Dravidian leaders mesmerized the Tamils with their emotional speeches and monopolized the Film Industry. Eventually plundered the wealth of Tamil Nadu. Isai Vellalar caste was introduced in 1960s when government decided to stop devdhasi system in TN.most of the music and art people of Tamil Nadu added to this newly created community .Devadhasi Community people were very respected people and they were responsible for temple and social art forms and music when Tamil kings were ruling Tamil Nadu. A minority of the Isai Vellalar have a very distant Telugu origin as they were imported from the northern Telugu lands when the Brideshwar temple was built in Thanjavur during time of Raja Raja Cholan a thousand years ago and later during the Vijayanagar period, centuries ago . However this was a very long time ago and the vast majority of the Isai Vellalar have a pure Tamil origin. Even if some of Karunanithi’s ancestors are these Telugu Melakarar who migrated to the Tamil country a thousand to centuries ago , to consider him as a Telugu is absurd, as he was born in the core Tamil country and spoke nothing else but very beautiful pure high Tamil and worked hard most of his life for the upliftment of Tamil. Telugus and Tamils are basically the same people, and are very close to each other in a lot of ways . other than the language which is also similar in a lot of ways once you get to know it. They are basically the same people. Until the British arrived, large parts of coastal southern Andhra , including the Tirupathi area was all predominantly Tamil inhabited. With the growth of Chennai or then Madras, millions of Telugus started to migrate to these once Tamil majority areas, north of Chennai for opportunities and gradually became the majority there.
