By Soraya M. Deen –
Dear Mr. President, I write to you not only as a concerned citizen but as someone who is deeply invested in the international standing and reputation of Sri Lanka. Just a few months ago, I was among those who voiced their skepticism about your ascent to the presidency, questioning whether your promises of eradicating corruption and prioritizing the welfare of the people would blossom into genuine change.
Yet, today, I reach across the chasm of our political differences to appeal to a shared hope: a united and harmonious Sri Lanka – ensuring religious freedom or belief to all. As you have articulated in your speeches, Sri Lanka stands at a crossroads—we either repeat divisive politics or create an opportunity to build a nation that values the rich diversity of its people.
Our motives and course of action must consider the harsh reality that we currently find ourselves in. We are on an international watchlist for religious freedom violations, a label that shrouds us in the complexities of scrutiny that those outside our borders will fail to comprehend. It is not merely a matter of political posturing; this watchlist threatens the essence of our identity as a nation and casts tremendous shadows on our vibrant democracy and diversity.
I have borne witness to the whispers of fear that echo through Christian communities in some villages, where the practice of their faith is often overshadowed by the fear of intimidation —a fear that is all too real, yet tragically leaves room for misunderstanding, by those who view us from afar. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has pointed an accusing finger at us, noting that our laws, rooted in the complexities of our politics, history, and culture, possess the potential to infringe upon the sacred right of Religious Freedom or Belief. During a recent meeting with one of its high-ranking officials, I expressed grave concern over the “Special Watch List,” designation of Sri Lanka. They see these existing frameworks—like the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act, The Online Safety Bill, Blasphemy Laws on the books and restrictions imposed via the Archaeological Department – leading to some instances of land grabbing —as tools of oppression and creates fertile ground for religious freedom violations. I strongly believe that we need to review these laws and ensure urgent opportunities for reform & repeal these laws that infringe on human rights and laws.
In your role, Mr. President, you have the power to transform these narratives. Imagine a Sri Lanka revered not just for its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, but as a beacon of compassion and understanding in a world rife with religious strife. By advocating for religious freedom, we are not merely catering to external demands; we mirror the true spirit of Buddhism—the four noble truths and the eightfold path—where compassion and kindness must be the pillars of our governance.
I implore you to treat the protection of religious freedom as paramount. Let us rise to the occasion, uniting our voices to ensure that the stories of our diverse communities resonate through familiarity and love rather than fear. We must swiftly act to demonstrate that Sri Lanka is a nation where every citizen, regardless of their beliefs, can thrive. Mr. President, we are witnessing the cracks in societies as they struggle with the shadows of dominance and violence rooted in religious intolerance.
We must not be another story—a cautionary tale. I believe that together, we can cultivate an environment where all Sri Lankans share in the warmth of acceptance, and the true essence of being Sri Lankan. Let today mark the beginning of a new chapter for our nation—one where compassion reigns, and our collective voices create harmony and never discord.
Sincerely,
Soraya Marikar Deen, Lawyer, International activist, Community Organizer, Co- chair- Women’s Working Group Int. Religious Freedom Roundtable-DC, Co-chair Religious Freedom Roundtable Sri Lanka.

Hello Soraya M. Deen,
This may be a very Minority View but what about the freedom to not believe, or to have the freedom to criticise any and all Religions. I am not talking about being derogatory towards them but to genuinely question their discourse without having the possibility of facing Criminal Charges.
Best regards

“the freedom to criticise any and all Religions”
It can be abused and needs to be restrained in its style.

Which Muslim country allows freedom to criticise Islam, while allowing Muslims to even insult other religions. We hear of Blasphemy charges only in Muslim country. Even in Malaysia, where Islam is only 55%, Muslims are allowed to convert non-Muslims into Islam while non-Muslims are barred to even preach their religion to Muslims. In Srilanka there is religious freedom to a large extent when compared to Muslim countries.

Except for Batticaloa, voters of all other areas with majority Muslim and Tamil or Chistian or other religion trusted Anura Kumara Dissanayake to ensure all the freedoms and equality of treatment. Now, the era of communal politics is over. None of the minority leaders who had hitherto exploited Sinhala Buddhist supremacist ideology to carve their own minority political interests won a seat in parliament. So, appealing to AKD on CT is probably a useless pursuit. The writer’s words will only bring comments from readers. AKD has long since espoused everything you seem to want and more.

The Tamil voters in the East are preoccupied with Tamil representation being taken away from their constituencies.
They are now tired of Pillaiyan, Karuna, Vyalendran and their likes. The FP got its seats by default.

LP,
Ofcourse, you are “absolutely on the Money”!!??
Difference is, ONLY AKD HAS WISDOM TO NARRATE COMPREHENSIVELY AND IMPORTANTLY CONCISELY the “BRIDGE” as:-
“All are equal before the Law and would be applied equally to one and all, across all communities, IRRESPECTIVE OF RELIGIOUS BIAS”!!??
That sentence – ONE SHORT message GALVANISED thoughts of voters, transcending barriers, ‘ENABLING ALL TO VOTE as ONE’ for AKD & NPP!?
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!??
Whilst those elitists, who attended over a long-time and Generations traditionally ELITIST Academies and Educational institutions were struggling to STRATIFY and STRUCTURE POSSIBLE SOLUTION for minority aspirational demands!? They sycophants went on to confound, why somethings for 70+ years couldn’t be yielded/accomplished, which AKD found resolution on the very first attempt at seeking the Golden gates of SL’s Executive Presidential aspirant and very 1st Visit or campaign to the North-East – RESPONSIVE SOLUTION, which people have accepted from all walks of life!!!??? Transcending ALL, Religious, Racial, Caste, Language BARRIERS and WON THE DAY FOR ALL SRI LANKANS!!?? NORTH, EAST, WEST, & SOUTH!?
Whilst, on other hand, have “Weerasangili Wimalasiri Gamalath” AKA Wimal Weerawansa, Political Lackey – Mahendra Percival AKA “APPACHCHI”, what to avoid OR accept!!??
SIMPLY PUT AS AKD DID EQUALITY, IS REQUIREMENT!!??

LP,
AKD’S SIMPLETON SPEAK won the day against the ‘CONFUSION WORST CONFOUNDED THEORSTS for 93+ YEARS (1931 TO 2024) of SINHALA MAHA SABHA, TAMIL CONGRESS (TC – GGP), FP/ITAK (SJV), SWRDB, DSS, DUDLEY, SIRIMAO, JRJ, RP, MR and RW et all, significant FAILURES in DELIVERING Political Messages to voters!!??
Was it Education, Erudition or Speech Therapy!!?? Optimised ability, “Deliver messages Acutely, Incisiveness amenable to recipients, whilst REMAINING FACTUAL, without distorting Real Underlying Concepts – AS ‘WINNER and ACCOMPLSHER’!!!???
So, in the longstanding battle of 90+ years, STC, St. PATRICKS, RC, ANANDA, NALANDA, AND SCHOOL, TAMED unyielding “MYNAH’S REPUTATION” of ATTENDING 3 SCHOOLS – LH Mettananda’s Ananda College, GUIDANCE rebuked, thence to “Teacher Training College” converted to, THURSTAN COLLEGE, finally, ISSIPATHANA/GREENLANDS COLLEGE didn’t enable him to ARRANGE/ACQUIRE the communication skills succinctly so as to enabling a solution, end of his HARD-FOUGHT WAR 05/2009!!?? What a Calamitous failure too!!?? Good opportunity wasted on the altar of possible 3rd term leading to ETERNAL glorification – King and Majesty thereon forever!!!???
Such being Facts, we ALL must CONCEDE DEFEAT to TAHMBUTTEGAMA CENTRAL COLLEGE (TCC) as best educational school in this – “Dharma Deepa” – ‘ Indian Ocean Tear drop Pearl’!!??
Hooray for TCC, ADK!!??

I am confused as to why you even bothered to pen this essay. GOSL has been practicing religious freedom as far as I can remember. Please enlighten us as to what you are asking for. What laws are not fair in SL with respect to practicing one’s own religious belief or faith?

nancytwins17, My experience about religious freedom too is similar to yours. We just practiced our religion and nobody questioned us, but today may be somewhat different as the temple priests in the country give letters to admit children to schools and hence control somewhat the practical living of others who can’t get priestly letters without converting to Buddhism or spending a lot of money to get these letters. In addition, all pay money to schools too.

Did not the Church indulge in the follies that the Buddhist clergy are accused of when they had influence in the affairs of the state?

Hello nancytwins17,
There was an extended discussion of the lack of Religious Freedom back in June 2024. Even a Comedienne was arrested.

My wife (a Sri Lankan) is constantly worried that as an Atheist I could be arrested for my criticism of Religion in Sri Lanka.
Have a look at my replies to Lester about how many people have been arrested for Religious Comments

nancytwins17,
Good point. The “Blasphemy Laws” in Sri Lanka are a joke compared to what you have in a country like Pakistan.
