Another Term Of This Madness?

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Negligent, ambitious, and perverse Princes are the real causes of public misfortunes.” – D’Holbach (Good Sense Without God)

This month, a female university-entrant fell off a seven-foot wall and suffered spinal injuries[i], while participating in the Leadership Training Programme in an army camp.

The military spokesman says the wall was just six feet high. Let’s believe him.

What sort of ‘leadership training’ entails jumping from a six-foot wall? Armed robbery? Kidnapping? Movie stunts?

Mahinda HitlerWhat is the logic of herding students into army camps and forcing them to engage in mindless and useless pursuits which have no place in a normal law-abiding civilian existence?

The leadership training programme is a near perfect symbol of Rajapaksa thinking and Rajapaksa governance. It is unnecessary, does no good to anybody and senseless almost to the point of insanity. It has not achieved any of its stated aims. The execrable practice of ragging continues; the only difference is that freshers get ragged twice – by the military as well as by seniors. (The Leadership Training Programme might broaden the sadistic horizons of future raggers, teaching them more degrading, dangerous and inhuman ways to torture the next batch).

The Leadership Training is a waste of everyone’s time and everyone’s money.

But it will not be scrapped because it is a brainchild of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Scrapping the programme would be akin to admitting that the Rajapaksas can make mistakes, which violates a key maxim of Rajapaksa rule – Rajapaksa infallibility.

The leadership training programme also provides a clear warning of the future awaiting Sri Lanka, if Mahinda Rajapaksa wins a third term.

Mahinda is not just Mahinda. Mahinda is Basil and Gotabaya, Namal and Shashindra, siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws. And acolytes, always acolytes, those pawns empowered and glorified for one crowded hour – or two. There will always be Sajin Vass Gunawardanes, Sampath Chandrapushpas, Duminda Silvas and Mervyn Silvas (and their sons); and Galagoda-Atte Gnanasaras. The Rajapaksas cannot rule without them.

Is this the future we want?

This is the future we will have, if Mahinda Rajapaksa wins a third term.

Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated the LTTE. He did not do so alone but let that be. Is defeating the LTTE a logical reason to give him a third term, knowing what he and his brothers did in the second term?

Make Mahinda Rajapaksa a gazetted national hero. Give him all the accolades and statues his megalomanic heart craves for. Rename every public facility after him. Make his birthday a national holiday. Have an annual parade honouring him. But do not give him a third term, so that he can institutionalise familial rule and render dynastic succession inevitable.

It is only in fairy tales that the monster-slayer gets the country as a reward. This is real life.

Mahinda Rajapaksa is indubitably a friendly man. Fine; set up a Mr. Conviviality award and give it to him every year. But that is not a good enough reason to vote for him, knowing what he will do and what he will allow his brothers, relatives and acolytes to do.

Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot protect national sovereignty. He is in the process of turning Sri Lanka into a Chinese protectorate. Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot build peace. He has failed to reconcile the Tamils while antagonising the Muslims and the Christians.

The only way Mahinda Rajapaksa can protect territorial integrity is by igniting another unnecessary war with another minority and winning it – after several more decades of bloodshed and mayhem.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s idea of development is to build expressways, airports and ports, while ordinary people including, his own Sinhala-base, sink into greater want.

Do we want the Rajapaksas – and that means all the Rajapaksas, not this or that Rajapaksa, because theirs is a family business – to rule this country for at least six more years?

Do we want Gotabaya Rajapaksa in parliament, poised to step into his brother’s presidential shoes, legally and constitutionally?

Do we want a totally degraded judiciary? Do we want judges who are manifestly the pawns of the rulers?

Do we want the new Rajapaksa commonsense to become hegemonic? Do we want impunity, abuse and corruption to become the only normal the next generation of Lankans know?

Do we want the militarization of economy, civil society and our minds? Do we want a morality which despises the weak and worships the strong and the powerful?

Do we want a country which cannot protect its most vulnerable (children and the elderly) even as it spends most of the national wealth on defence?

Do we want an acolyte-capitalism and a serfocratic administration, a country where Dhammika Pereras rule the economy and Sajin Vaas Gunawardanes thump Chris Nonises?

Do we want a country where advancement and safety depends on slavish obedience to Rajapaksas?

Do we want Sri Lanka to become a battleground of regional and global powers?

Do Sinhalese want a lasting peace or a new war with another minority?

Do Tamils want to live under de facto occupation, a life of worsening humiliation, powerlessness and insecurity?

Do Muslims want to become the new Tamils?

Do Christians want to live like second class citizens?

Dislodging the Rajapaksas will not solve all Lankan problems. But the absolute majority of Lankan problems cannot be solved without dislodging the Rajapaksas.

The Final Trapdoor

Defeating the Rajapaksas becomes an uphill task with each passing year. Not because the Rajapaksas become more popular, but because the Rajapaksas make the politico-electoral playing field more uneven, from within.

But economic discontent is growing, especially among the Sinhalese (as the CPA survey reveals). That gives the opposition a trapdoor of opportunity, a decent chance of pushing the election into a second round. For the opposition, an outright victory is not necessary; preventing an outright victory by the Rajapaksas will suffice because it can cause a political tsunami, including within the SLFP.

If the Rajapaksas win the presidency, they will move swiftly to neutralise the most effective figures in the opposition. Once the opposition is reeling from attacks, arrests, calumnies and internal squabbles, the parliamentary election can be held. When a Rajapaksa occupies the PM post, the Achilles Heel of familial rule will be no more.

Life has not improved for Tamils and Muslims during the second Rajapaksa term. But has life become better and happier for the Sinhala majority during the second Rajapaksa term? The Sinhala-South might not be interested in the atrocities committed during the war and in the aftermath. They might be indifferent to Tamil and Muslim problems and fears. But has the condition of the Sinhala-South improved during the second Rajapaksa term? Are Sinhalese better off socio-economically, more secure and more hopeful about the future than they were in 2010? Are they happy about the direction in which the Rajapaksas are taking the country? Are they willing to sacrifice the basic rights they take so much for granted and the prospect of a more peaceful and prosperous future, for the sake of a dead or an unseen enemy?

The Rajapaksas will try to muddy the waters of our thinking by screaming about Tigers and Jihadists, traitors and conspirators, so that we forget the real issue.

Do we want a Rajapaksa future?

RE: Another Term Of This Madness?

Where is the Common Sense Pamphlet? Is it done? Ready to distribute?

    Common Sense (pamphlet)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_(pamphlet)

Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2]

Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[4] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[5]

Mahinda Rajapaksa has another 2 years left in power. Why does he want to have elections now?
It is sheer GREED and AMBITION that makes Mahinda Rajapaksa hold elections now and waste 300 million rupees when people of Lanka are finding it hard to pay for the next meal. Mahinda wants another 6 years more because 2 years more is not enough so he and his family can to loot Lanka and impoverish us further. This should be made clear to the Sinhala people. The extent of corruption of the Rajapakse regime which is full of his brothers, sons, nephews, nieces, in laws and cronies and the Hambantota loans from China must be told to the people.

Mahinda Rajapaksa has also systematically corrupted and destroyed Buddhism in Lanka. It is good that Sobitha Thero and Rathana are trying to rescue Sinhala Buddhism from the Rajapaksa military dictatorship and associated corrupt politicians of who have distorted and made a mockery of What the Buddha Taught.

Today Sinhala Buddhism is a JOKE and has a bad reputation in the world. Sinhala Buddhists are known to attack minorities and the weak and vulnerable people. This is not a good thing for the Sinhala Buddhist Sangha which needs to be cleaned of political corruption. The Bodu Bala Sena epitomizes the corruption and politicization of the Sangha by politicians and particularly Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa who are trying to cover up their corruption and criminality by hiding behind a DISTORTED Buddhism.

MR wants his position and status assured ahead of the UN revelations – this is the reason for an early PE. The same twist
of deafting terrorism will be presented again to garner votes of

People of this country have to decide against to vote for Meeharaka OR for a change.

All opposition parties will rally round to make aware the people being caught by Rajapakshe media units – so that they can finally have a healthy vision about the future of country.

Any leader who would come to power should nationalize all the assets from Meeharaka and co – with those funds alone new govt can finance the PAY HIKES for the long awaiting workers. Latter is statistically correct when comparing with MASSIVE wastes being the case of today s Meeharaka ´s administration.

When the young women leave after 6 weeks of training, they weep. Some even worship their instructors.

Thousands have passed out without incidents. When the participants give that kind of feedback, I am not sure if this Tissaranee is in touch with reality.

Have you seen chicken, cattle, pigs … reared for meat? Haven’t you seen them too following, showing affection, feelings and nearness to the butcher until they are slaughtered for meat?

Only a gon wassa like you wish to be eaten like that, not us.

Those ignorant youths without any idea of the calamity that is hanging over them nor with any practical worth experience of life just after the protection of their family and protection cannot be taken to prove any point but oblivious, ignorant entrapment and jeopardy.

And a young relative told me the same thing: the friendship sinhalese children made with tamil children – mostly through non-verbal communication- has been so great they too cried before leaving the camps after training. in my view children learn hundreds of times more through this type of interaction compared to the tuition classes…

Are you saying when they are through the Brother Prince’s Curriculum, they get confidence of how to make money? Is this the best way, in your opinion, to convert the Sinhala Buddhist into Sinhala Intellectuals. Then go ahead and use the Universities for that good cause.

I always see your comment re: Common Sense Pamphlet. It is a real good idea. The best people to do that is the JVP.

Indeed, a Common Sense Pamphlet in SINHALA is what we need to EDUCATE the Sinhala Modayas.

Unfortunately the UNP opposition with that shameless clown and DICTATOR of the UNP, Ranil has failed to educate the Sinhala Modyas on the meaning and practice of corruption free good governance and democracy. This is because Ranil is too busy violating democracy within his party and fighting with the UNP members.

The lack of voter education is why Sinhala Modayas vote for people corrupt criminals like Mervin and Duminda Silva and the Rajapaksa brothers..

i couldn’t expect anything better from a woman like you. having said that i don’t give a damn about mohomud rajapssa too. however, answer to few questions that caught my attention, (i don’t give a damn about your other stupid questions)

    1. Do we want Gotabaya Rajapaksa in parliament, ? YES, WE NEED HIM THERE TO RAISE VOICE AGAINST MUSLIM AND TAMIL TERRORISM AND TO FIGHT THAT

    2. Do Sinhalese want a lasting peace or a new war with another minority? NO. WE DONT, BUT WE SHOULD BE THE MAJORITY OF THIS COUNTRY AND WE SHOULD RULE THIS COUNTRY, NOT PARA MINORITIES. IF THIS IS FULFILLED, WE DONT NEED A ANOTHER WAR

    3. Do Muslims want to become the new Tamils? IT’S UPTO THEM. IF THEY NEED A WAR, WE WILL GIVE THEM A WAR AND THEY CAN ALSO FIND A LAGOON LIKE NANDIKADAAL. HOW ABOUT PUTTALAM LAGOON?

4 Do Christians want to live like second class citizens? ANYWAY MINORITIES ARE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS

      Nishantha De Silva,

You are a first class bigot. You are dumb enough to have your name as De Silva and chose to be a bigot! Do you realise that some stage in the past your ancestors converted to Catholism under the Portuguese? This is how you got your surname De Silva! Then sometime in the recent past, they converted back to Buddhism because of expediency! Who knows, your ancestors might have been Tamils; your surname obscure it.

You now want to treat the minorities as second class citizens and at the same time you have no qualms about calling them terrorists! Let me tell you something, you have no inner peace because you have hatred embodied within you. You need to grow up mentally and seek counselling in order to culture your mental outlook. Hope you do this as a matter of urgency!

burning issue, i know it’s hard swallow the bitter truth for you minority scums. but the truth is minorities will face the consequences sooner rather than later and it’s going to be a horrible experience for them.

        • 2
          2

          Nishantha,

There are those Sinhala Buddhists who go at length to conceal their bigotry; you on the other hand are very proud to be a bigot. Your honesty in this regard is commendable as the minorities know where they stand with you. Your hatred towards the minorities is palpable. This is why I say that you are complete devoid of inner peace; you will never be at peace until you shed your hatred for good. But it looks as if it is a long shot for you, good luck.

But remember you are a De Silva swap religion predicated on which side of the bread is buttered!

      3

      Nishantha,
I must disagree with #4 above. Every one of us belongs to a minority, if we dissect society into it’s many components. A society can ONLY function at it’s best when we rise above our few differences, and treat each other as equals. This is certainly difficult to do at times, but, yet this is what we must strive for. May I also remind you that we succeed in this far more often than we realize.

      • 2
        2

Ram, there should not be any reconciliation with minorities as long as they think they have equal rights in this country.

Or are you really a first class imbecile? If it’s the latter, no surprise that you consider minorities as second class. Bigots like you and the members of Balu Bala Sena for instance should be consigned to the dustbin of history, for good. We don’t live in the medieval ages any more, to excuse such intolerance.
Maybe it would be a Christian, a Muslim or a Tamil that would save your sorry life one day. How about that? Everyone’s a human being and no one lives for ever.

With this long Do we have to list , Ms T will certainly will have to be on Prozac for another 4 years at least from 2015…

According to Dr Mahesan from Manchester Medical, Mr Sambandan and Apprentice Abraham are waiting with a clean slate for a call from the President.

Why are they so keen, when the the Election just only around the corner.

Some smart punters may ask whether this is a ploy to stitch up Rajapaksa and make the Sinhala Buddhist backers mad and allow the CC to sneak in…

Although a punter I don’t think so, because,

Then he got on the wrong horse again, which looked more like a Donkey. sorry Pony…..

Does he want to do the same again specially if it is a mare resurrected from the pastures…?.

He obviously can not, because not that he has become a street smart punter, but he has been pushed in to it.

Mr Sambandan and Apprentice Abraham are waiting for a call from the President,,according to the Udayan…

Has the Vellala CM gone past the Use by Date?..

It appears so , after reading the angry comments of Yogarajan, an MP of the TNA Vellala Council.

He says the CM is hopeless, Couldn’t even get a response for a letter from the constituents Politically naive and extremely poor in Administration.

Money allocated by the Govt is not spent. because of these inadequacies..

And Doughie and the Dalits are gaining ground ,

10 of the 12 MPS have had enough of the Vellala CM and they are contemplating about joining the Opposition.

TNA Leader Sambandan and apprentice Abraham are the two emissaries who went to Toronto to draft the Vellala CM’s Election Manifesto,

And negotiated the Canadian Dollars which helped to install Vellala Wiggie as the CM.

Ever since, the CM has been the puppet of the Vellala TNA and their Ally the Diaspora.

Not spending the Govt grants and spreading continuous false allegations, even as late as last week in Madras, are part of the pay back from the Vellala CM to help the Diaspora Agenda..

This lead to the total neglect of the ex Captives and the Dalits who were waiting for good times after the Election.

Like the Opposition is all shambles, TNA NPC is all one big ass shemozzle………………..

Probably people like Yogeswaran who seem to be more inclined to help the ex captives than the Diaspora, holding the blow torch to CM and his handlers Sambandan and Apprentice Abraham’s under belly, made them try and get on side with the Government.

If it is the case and the TNA wants to help the ex Captives and the Dalits in the North to get their lives back without using them to deliver Diaspora their dream Eelaam. the great majority of the inhabitant population , will welcome any gestures from the President.

The Sri Lanka haters are sweating and whining because they know with Rajapakse at the helm the LTTE monkeys have no chance in Sri Lanka – they will just have to carry on performing their circus acts in Europe for the foreseeable future :D

So you admit tht Sinhalese are Dravidians and are descended from Tamils. Indigenous and Indian.

There are not a handful indigenous Tamils but quite a lot around2.2 million with another 1.5 million overseas. They would have been more if not for Sinhalese genocidal activities since independence and European colonisation. The large scale Sinhalisation of both indigenous and Indian origin Tamils during the European colonial era.

Thank the European colonisers for saving you Sinhalese by increasing your number twice or threefold by importing hundreds of thousands of low caste Indian Tamil immigrants who took on a Sinhalese Buddhist or Catholic identity.

The European colonial powers especially the British have a lot to answer to the present pitiable plight of the Eelam Tamils. They had no right to hand over the entire country to a savage racist Sinhalese majority ,largely descended from migrant Indian Tamil low castes whic were fed on Mahavamsa tripe.

The indigenous Eelam Tamil peoples fate.plight and destiny were taken out of their hands. There was no survival of the fittest but a massacre. The LTTE was a child of Sinhalese racism, when all non violent means failed. At present the Sinhalese were largely able to come to this level not through their efforts but due to India and then China.

As for the evedence of Tamil inscriptions building etc they are everywhere, stil living . In the place names throughout the island, even in theSinhalese south. The Sinhalese language which is around 35 to 40% Tamil. The practices cuture. folk music and worship of both the Sinhalese and the Tamils. The exitance of ancient Saivite Hindu temples thousands of years old. the five ISwarams. Saivite Hinduism is very Tamil and Dravidian. The worshipping of Lord Murrukan both by the SInhalese and Tamils and Kathirkammam. Murugan is a pure Tamil diety . Taht the Sinhalease worship as their war dog( Velan ) show their ancient Tamil origins.

Lastly the Tamils were livcng in the coastal areas, whereas teh SInhalese largely lived in the interior.( the Coastal Sinhalese eg the Karawa,Salagama,Druaa area new phenomemma, and largely descended from Indian Tamil immigratns)So teh Tamil faced the full wrath of the Portuguese teh Dutch and alomst 99% of their buildign and cutural artifacts were destroyed. The Protuguese themselves destroyes over 500 Hindu temples in teh North and east and the palace of teh king of Jaffna. The intereior ISnhalese areas ( Kandyan) were sparedof this as they and the Tamil Vanni were captured by the Britsh in 1815. Teh Britsh were not that brutal or cruel compared to the other colonial powers. Unerstood fool’

After indepencence the Sinhalese have destroyed the reamining vestiges adn evidence of the ancient Tamil Saivite HIndu culture in theisland. Eg Burnig of Jaffna library. Turnig Kathirkamam from a HIndu place of worship to Buddhist. Destroying ancient Tamil inscription liek the recent 2500 Tamil Brahmi inscription. Now destroyiing HIndu places of worhip in the North and east and buliding Buddhist shrines over them

Europaen Space Agency scientist have landed a mini space probe on to a comet which is 300 million miles away from earth and travelling at 35,000 miles per hour the project took 21years to accomplish

Landing a common candidate to evict Mahinda is proving even more difficult. The guy is moving tactically at a lightning speed it may take another 20 years to evict him to outer space?

Thank you Tisaranee Gunasekara for a brilliant analyses. The fears for another term with the Rajapakses is terrifying but appears a foregone conclusion, made possible with the stranglehold this regime has on the Judiciary, Cabinet and the media. The potential challenger needs to garner support from unlikely bedellows – UNP, JVP, TNA and disgruntled others to have any hope of winning. Sadly the message ingrained in the minds of the electorate is that of a Single Issue the opposition is obsessed with, that of abolishing the Executive Presidency (EP) which, to a sane mind looks unlikely because the first job to go will be the winner’s but instead the EP would remain and instead of Mahinda Rajapakse wielding and abusing autocratic powers, it will be another person wielding the same powers.

We need to quickle choose a suitable common candidate, but more importantly, this candidate should publicise a manifesto setting up a list of what he would do when elected. Ranil recently listed a nine-point plan elsewhere in this newspaper, to which I added a few more. These are credible and truly capable of winning the electorate of all classes, race, colour and creed, over.

Tisaranee’s article should be translated into Sinhalese and sent to the people in the south where the they dominate.
It would be an eye opener for them. This needs to be done as the majority of the people in the South are not conversant in English and unlikely to read what appears in the Colombo Telegraph. If no one is willing to publish anonymously Common Sense Phamphlet advocated by Amarasiri, the opposition parties at least can have the article translated and handed over to the people when they attend political meetings.

The masses still believe that MR and gang are doing all these developments for their benefits…. They just don’t understand that MR and gang are doing all these for their pockets with corruption and bribes running so high that they are finding it hard to hide the loot.

Anura Kumara of JVP has just started exposing it which is causing them some fear in their minds.

All these highways are made for MR and Gang to go about freely whilst making money out of it…

The Masses should be educated about whats going on as there is still little time left before all hope fades for this jungle land

Sinhala Intellectual repeatedly writing that the Minorities, specially Tamils going to start a new armed struggle if King continue on the EP. They are threatening the Sinhala Buddhist just the way they have been threatening Tamils and Muslims.

Tamils did not start an armed smuggle during King’s rule. To capture the power in the coming election, this is a twisted story told by Sinhala Intellectuals. It was started in Badiuddin Mahmud’s time. Did the Sinhala Intellectual deprived Sinhala Buddhist religious right or language rights? Can they explain why JVP two times started armed struggle?

Can the Sinhala Intellectual tell the time when the 65% job holders become 2% job holder. Is that also in King’s time? Then can brainwash Sinhala Buddhist for their victory. Tamils never heard and did anything this nasty group wanted.

“ Mahinda is Basil and Gotabaya, Namal and Shashindra, siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws. And ………. Sajin Vass Gunawardanes, Sampath Chandrapushpas, Duminda Silvas and Mervyn Silvas (and their sons); and Galagoda-Atte Gnanasaras….” Even if you were to put together the brain power of all of the above the intellectual capacity to decently govern even a provincial council in Sri Lanka is grossly insufficient. Though wily, the intellectually endowed JRJayewardene with a decent education, in reference to a third term declared that as one who had played cricket during his school days he was brought up in a tradition of only “two innings”. The Rajapaksas and their henchmen on the contrary are used to assaulting umpires and referees with impunity to win at any cost. Expect a State of savagery with no point of return. Bensen

The Rakapaksas got it from the british and it is well established as Hazing in the USA.It thrived under the UNP and its paternalism. It boils down to the imposition of a subservience to authority and it is nothing new. Have you forgotten what the UNP did in the late 80s and early 90s? Have you forgotten the heads stuck on poles?

Let us concentrate on the policies and not the way that they are implemented. Will the UNP be able to continue with the ongoing developmental initiatives if they come to power? Can there be growth with Harsha as the governor of the central bank? Will there be democracy a la Batalanda with Ranil in charge?

Will we actually be better off than we are under Hitlers brother?

Like most journalists you have a sort of juvenile inability to look reality in the eye and a talent for leading fools down the road to US hegemony.
