Answer Please For Us To Decide

By Helasingha Bandara

Mahinda, you ask us to vote for you on the claim that you have defeated terrorism and you have given us roads.  Yes we agree that your claim is well founded. Yet we have numerous other questions for which we are desperate to get answers before deciding to vote you in for an unprecedented third term. We cannot do it just because Dayan Jayatilieka says that you deserve a third term. He has lost our respect a long time ago. We held him at high esteem during the time he showed his ability to defend Sri Lanka at UN battles. His greed for positions at the cost of his self-esteem and dignity has made us change our minds. So whatever he says holds no water for us. We cannot elect you just because Tissa Attanayake sided with you. In our view Maithri did not defect but formed a new alliance for him to lead. Both Tissa and Rajitha have defected, one to the old alliance and the other to the new.

Mahinda RMWe do not believe either of them. On the part of Tissa, one day he cried and swore that he would stick with one party and he smiled and defected to another on the very next day.  No decent fellow can follow him. Now that he has been offered the Health Ministry, is it not a bribe? In fact this could even be against election laws. Someone called Mahindapala is writing in your favour. His stuff is all about Chandrika and Ranil, not about Maithreepala. Besides, his style of attacking people is disgusting. We cannot learn anything from such a malicious man. You call Maithri a puppet. That is not good enough reason for us to choose you. In this sense, your entire government is full of puppets. They do not have views of their own. It has always been your view they represent.  Nonetheless, if you can answer our questions properly and defend your case we may still support you.

Why did you decide to hold an early election?

Was there any internal pressure from the opposition to do so? Was there any international pressure for you to hold an early election? Was there a pressing economic or a social issue that could have been resolved by holding fresh elections? Was it that you thought your governance is getting worse and your popularity is diminishing? Was it your greed for power and opportunistic nature that made you decide to have an early election thinking that you can still play the race card?

Why do you protect rogues?

You are being accused of protecting murderers, rapists, plunderers, criminals and the like. We are sorry to see your government is full of them. Mervin Silva is known to have committed everything that a citizen would not approve of. He has famously invaded media stations, harassed opponents, damaged night clubs together with his son, tied people onto trees and uses a language utterly unbecoming for a Minister. He is still there under your protection. Duminda Silva is alleged to have murdered one of your own party members. His hand in the murder is utterly true.  Yet he is free and close to you.  Yes we know that a person is not guilty until proven. In this case he should be guilty until proven otherwise.  He should therefore not be functioning as a parliamentarian. Johnston Fernando is a pole-vaulter and is of the fame of Ethanol. He is still earning dirty money under your protection. Sajin Vass has assaulted the Sri Lanka High Commissioner. Only in Sri Lanka such an incident is overlooked. Why do you not remove them from your government or party? Are you afraid that they have your files or do they pay your family a big share from the black money they earn?

Is it not mainly your propaganda material littering the country?

People say that billions of public money is spent on your own propaganda material. Is it untrue that you have got ministries and other public bodies to spend public money on your behalf? Is it your own money that you have spent on that promotional material? If so how did you earn that much?  Is it the money that your cronies pump into your election campaign?  Have they stolen that money from the people? Have you promised to give them many more opportunities to steal double of what they have spent if you are reelected?

Did you win the war on your own?

Is it not right to say that political leadership and the military leadership are equally important to win a war? Is it not right to say that the defeating of the LTTE was a collective effort of everyone including the journalists and opinion writers? Is it not right to say that the former army commander was entitled to some share of the glory that you have attributed only to you and your family? Was it right to incarcerate the former army commander just because he democratically opposed you?  You ask us to vote for you because you would not let the LTTE raise its head again. Can we not vote the other camp on the belief that the former army commander who won the war on the battle field is in that camp and he would not let the LTTE raise its head again either? Finally would you do the same to Maithree that you did to Sarath if he loses the election?

Why did you reduce prices of various items suddenly?

Has the country suddenly drawn Euro millions lottery or was there any divine intervention with money for you to reduce prices in the election time? Is it part of your dirty politics to deceive people to vote you in gain?

Are you intimidating state sector employees?

Is that true that you and your Ministers, MPs and other disciples force people to come to various election campaign meetings? Is it true that they are threatened with serious consequences if they do not attend?  Is it true that even the University teachers comply with this for the fear? Is it true that you are unleashing a terror campaign against the opponents? Do you not think that it is unwise to physically harm opponents because people of this country do not approve of such intimidatory tactics?

Are you truly a nepotistic person?

Is it true when people say that you give your immediate family, your extended family and your friends undue responsibilities in the government, in the local government structure, in the Foreign Service and in many other areas? Is it true when they say all your Ministers have complained, secretly obviously, that they have no freedom to administer their ministries as you and your brothers dictate terms to everyone? Is it true that there are plenty of people in your party wanting to cross over for that reason but they have no guts and they fear losing perks? Finally has Rohitha paid for his own ticket to Katmandu? If you have paid his ticket with public money, is it ethical, legal or acceptable?

Do you know of Julius Caesar?

Have you heard that Julius Caesar was one of the greatest commanders of the Roman Empire? Do you know that even he was murdered when people suspected dictatorial tendencies in him? Do you know that like the Romans, we the Sri Lankans do not want a dictator amongst us or a nepotistic despot who is full of himself and has no respect for the rule of law, democracy or the ordinary people like us? If you are not in a position to answer all those questions and clear yourself, we are afraid that we would ask you to go home this time.

Very valid questions which will be impossible to answer to seek a favourable mandate from the people. Well written and questions raised without any bias.

      Mahinda, Oh Mahinda,

You are an embodiment of lies!

      Your hair lies its color,
your broad grin lies about your hidden criminal self,
your attire lies about your pretensions,
and you lie about war crimes,
      crimes against humanity,
      crimes against the poor people,

And you will lie all the way to the grave!

Dear Helasingha, thanks for your utterly childish rhetorical questions. But let me answer on behalf of the great man, not that I have any authority to do so. But had you any common sense you would not need to ask such silly questions that burden only the rich and famous of colombo.

Why did you decide to hold an early election?

Maybe because he believes that the presidential term should be reduced to 5 years instead of 6. When he wins the third term and takes oaths on 19th November 2015, he would have held office only for 10 years.

Maybe because he wants to prove his popularity among the public and his right to rule in front of the western world, who are hell bend on getting revenge for his arrogance before their might.

      Why do you protect rogues?

Maybe its because these ‘so called rogues’ can actually work, get things done. If not for his political maneuvering, and Machiavellian tactics, the UPFA government would have lost the budget in 2007 thanks to ‘literally’ Swiss funded cross over. In that case, long live the LTTE indeed.

Is it not mainly your propaganda material littering the country?

Any idea about electoral politics in Sri Lanka? who pays for election propaganda? who paid for Sarath Fonseka’s videos, cutouts, posters, tv and radio ads, newspaper ads? apart from the US embassy, it was local businessman They do this for many reasons including to make it easier to gain political patronage to survive the red tape in government.

Been in Colombo recently? seen how many new cars, SUVs, 4wheel drives, BMW and Benzes around? did you see so many 10 years ago? there is a growing wealthy business class in the country. They have done incredibly well under this government. I would not doubt that they would spend a bit of their money to, a. show loyalty b. to ensure stable government c. out of their own interest

Did you win the war on your own?

Never heard him say that. have you?

Why did you reduce prices of various items suddenly?

Hear any average people complaining about the reduction of prices. But even if you do have too much money, do a google search, notice a reduction of fuel prices online? Did you realize that production of electricity cost using coal?

Are you intimidating state sector employees?

Did you know that under his leadership, more than 200,000 have been employed by the public sector. Did you also realize that the number of university graduates demanding jobs from the government is almost none? it used to be about 40,000 at its peak. Do you really think these people need threatening to show loyalty? also, have you heard of any public servants being dismissed, losing jobs under this government. ever heard of public servants losing jobs under previous governments because of political allegiance?

Are you truly a nepotistic person?

Did you realize that when CBK was president, her brother Aura was the speaker of parliament, mother Sirimavo was prime minister, maternal uncle Anuruddha was the minister of Defence? Did you realize that Ranil’s unle was JR? and Ranils Nephew is Ruwan Wijewardene?

Do you know of Julius Caesar?

I don’t know if he is but I would not think that he would care.

Just having watched this weeks Balaya program, I got to know how some ministers are empowered by MR regime too.
Jonsten Fernando looses his control if the opposition counterparts produce their arguments. This kind of culture is sowed by Rascal Rajapakshes. I would never recommend another Jonsten Fernandos to come and argue publicly. THese men should be discarded by using the rest amunitions of the war. Most of these thugs are being empowered by the multi criminal president.

RE: Answer Please For Us To Decide

      Thanks. Well articulated.

I am of opinion that you could be the Sri Lanka Thomas Paine of 2014, .

Please consider writing the Common sense pamphlet. Only 4 weeks left.

      Common Sense (pamphlet)

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29

Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2]

Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[4] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[5]

Why are crimes unsolved, criminals protected, and powers abused? This article alone shows why Rajapaksa should not get a third term. We are tired of the nepotism, misuse of our money, and rampant corruption.

The main question we need to raise is why to elect MR into his 3rd term.

What he would change than has been sofar. In the post war situation, what has his administration mastered to top ? Long term projects such as buidling roads and constructions to improve the infrastructure of the country are part of every developing country today. Be it in Nairobi or Dako that will not change since the contractors are chinese or Koreans. Those contractors work self since the enginering work based on tasks are managed by them not local engineers. Moreover even skilled laboureres were also brought from those countries since the locals are not that upto work for them.
So any govt can continue such work, even better if those tenders would have been transparent and accountable. With the money being wasted future rulers would be able to give a life to the poor of the poor in the country that specially struggle for their 3 meals.

“Sri Lankans do not want a dictator amongst us or a nepotistic despot who is full of himself and has no respect for the rule of law, democracy or the ordinary people like us”… -your definition of “ordinary people”, sadly is a minority in this country. The majority has two non-communicating brain cells each, and they might very well follow the Darwinian path to “natural extinction”. This is why I believe election of MR for a third term will be “natural”, and a “must”.

“Do you know of Julius Caesar?”… Are you kidding me? MR might think that this is a close associate of Mervin Silva who “Helped” the “Development projects” at numerous occasions, and the general populous might guess that this is some type of a booze. They will almost never guess that this could be an Italian race car brought in tax free for night races, or the name of a puppy brought in a “dedicated” Sri Lankan airlines flight, or the name of a lounge of a newly built super luxury hotel in Colombo, or a new song put together to woo school girls into a dance, or the street name of a luxury house in America, or a bank in Luxembourg or Switzerland or Cayman Islands.

Trust me on this one. If MR runs on an explicit slogan that anyone who rescues a woman from drowning has the right to rape her right on the river bank in broad day light, the majority Sri Lankans will vote “YES”.

Did MR declare his and his family assets on nomination day? If not, why? He should declare it and publish it in the newspapers. Maithripala Sirisena’s and hopefully his family assets , declared on nomination day, should also be published in the newspapers. The people should know and should be given the opportunity ask questions. This would be a good beginning to clean up our political system. Sirisena should take the lead and the moral high ground in order to force the Rajapakse hand.

You may have read my suggestion in earlier weeks, where I made out that the Opposition should have large placards placed around where they hold Rallies in future, disclosing a fake MRs Declaration of Assets Form.
The figures are available to most journalist, but a foot note therein
should state that the figures are subject to change if an when MR
furnishes a legal and correct Form to the EC – at least for the 3rd
Term. WILL HE DO IT or DENY THE Faked figures. This should be the
best political propaganda of the times for our SB Voters to open their
eyes. We are excused from this mode as the FORM was submitted by MR.

Will the JVP that is busy distributing print-outs to every home include
the above suggestion on the last page??? There is no better way to
garner votes democratically than this, and specially this time.

A very sensible and an illustrious article. We are “undecided” voters and need answers to very many “doubts” before deciding to cast the vote.

One more question I have: What was the cost and other incidental expenses of your pilgrimage to TIRUPATHI? Was that on “Government Business”? If not who paid for the entire pilgrimage?. Was that not PLUNDERING of Public money?.

Another question just came in to my mind: The Election Commissioner had paid Rs. 8.00 millions to the Police to remove the “cut outs” and “posters” put up in Colombo and suburbs. Of those cut outs, 99.5% belonged to you and you approved them. Is is correct to spend that amount of money to remove those? Should not this money spent by the Election Commissioner be debited to you and recovered before the election?

I need answers to all the questions raised in the article PLUS the two questions by me to decide to vote for you.

A friend of mine from abroad gave me a telephone call after reading my comment above and he explained how his country deals with this “cutouts” and “posters”. The posters are allowed only on “authorized” spots such as road sides and definitely not on electrical posts or public places such as bus stops. The posters have to comply with certain sizes (length and breath). If any of the posters do not comply with this requirement and on a complaint, the Police will come and “remove” it and will issue a fine on the person whose name and the picture appears. Then again a certain stipulated date, after the elections, all such posters have to be removed by the candidates. If not done by the given date, the Police will remove those and will issue a fine by way of a legal ticket to the person whose name or the picture appeared. What a NICE country that could be?

In the same manner, if these posters and cutouts are illegal as per our election laws, why can’t our esteemed Election Commissioner order the Police to remove those and charge it to the person whose name or the picture appears. He can also bring a Law Suite against the person in a court and seek conviction. What is our “Election Commissioner” doing by disbursing our money to remove those cutouts and posters. In my opinion this Election Commissioner must be charged in a court of law by a citizen for “unauthorized expenditure” of public funds. Then only he will learn his lesson, of course, the hard way.

Food for thought for a future administration.

I totally agree with your suggestion, however i would go further to add that cut-out /posters must be put up by only authorised personal from political party organisation with prior permission of the location from the local authority, with the name and address of the authorised person on the poster/cut out. This avoids unscrupulous personnel putting up posters of the opposing camp to create a trouble for the opposing camp

In any case I believe these posters/cut outs are such a eye sore that it is working negatively for a political point of view The Rajapakse campaign has gone over the top with these posters to annoy many citizens that it is more than likely to lose more votes than gain them as a result of such hideous excesses.

ps- i take it you, like me have been barred from making comments in a “certain” blog. My comments are being severely doctored by LW or not posted at all if I question the authenticity of statements in articles or comments. cie la vie

In all media including TV we find the UPFA government stooges attacking Chandrika, they have nothing against any of the Opposition coalition partners (heads of those parties) or Ranil (other than some comments about signing agreements with LTTE, but they forget Rajapakse gave money to buy their blockage of Tamil votes) or Maithripala Sirisena. This clearly shows that they are loosing the battle to Maithripala Sirisena. Its Maithripala Sirisena who is contesting the Presidential election and not Ranil, Champika, or the Theros.

However, opposition has so much to say against Rajapakse.

Marco: Nice to meet you here. The same fate fell on you fell on me too in that web page. Anyway, I have no grudge or complaint against them. It is their right and let it be like that. Only thing I did was to ask for the reasons for not accepting my comments; but no reply came. In that respect CT is different and the reasons for deleting a comment is given. I have been contributing to this page for a long time and have not come across such obstacles.

Coming back to this “Cutouts” and “Posters”, if I remember correct, there was a rule that every poster had to indicate the place of printing, such as the printers name and contact. Over the period of “misuse” and “planned hijacking” of the law, the unscrupulous politicians have messed up the justice system to their own benefit like any other matter. What we are fighting here is to “put right” the things that have been willfully messed up and of course it indicates a fight against individuals who are accused of such misdoings.

All in all this “Big Mess” has to be cleared for the country to move forward in the modern world.
