JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has accused the Yahapalanaya government of protecting the former first family, including Shiranthi Rajapaksa and her sons, despite credible evidence proving that they have wrongfully taken over property and lands from across the country.
Addressing an event held in Colombo titled ‘Fraudsters & Protectors’ Dissanayake said that there is a ring in the government that is protecting the Rajapaksas. “The UNP MPs are coming on television and saying it’s very difficult to find evidence against the wrongdoings of the Rajapaksa family. They are saying the Rajapaksas have hidden their wealth in Dubai and even though they have gone to Dubai, the Dubai government is refusing to disclose information. I am telling them to stop going to Dubai, instead go to Hambantota and Mount Lavinia and see the amount of wealth they have amassed.”
Dissanayake also listed out various lands under the possession of Shiranthi Rajapaksa, her sons Yoshitha and Namal, and her mother Daisy Forrest. He revealed that they, along with Basil Rajapaksa have lands from Gampaha to Mount Lavinia, and Hambantota to Colombo 7. Dissanayake also questioned as to how Basil Rajapaksa owned land worth Rs. 379 million.
“These are only what we know about. What did they do to get so much of property in these past few years. These belong to the people. They are thieves who were defeated at the January 8 Presidential Election,” he said.
The JVP leader also criticized the judiciary system for prolonging various cases against Basil Rajapaksa. “In one of Basil’s cases, the hearing was held last month and it has been put off till next March. Our judges are so busy. So basically, these cases are only taken up twice a year. There is a ring that is protecting these thieves. We have presented the evidence against them, but still no action is being taken,” he added.

What the JVP leader claims is nothing new. We have heard it before. The questions he has posed are also questions the general public is asking. How is that only some members of Rajapaksa family are charged and not others like Mahinda and his wife. Is the government afraid of them or the government is deliberately shielding them from the long arm of the law. Not surprisingly the courts are also not in a hurry to hear the cases. when a case is postponed not only the accused person(s) everybody else also stands to gain. The lawyers enrich themselves by postponement. They have another day to bill the clients. The judges gain by postponement of cases to stay in office after they have reached their retirement age.
Under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s dispensation the judges were falling over each other to send his critics to jail. for writing something not much different from what many others have written over the years,
J.S.Tissanayagam was the editor of North-Eastern Monthly magazine that was published on and off. In March 2008 He had gone to the Police to inquire about two colleagues who had been arrested the day before. He was promptly arrested and detained by the Police. It took five months to indict him and he was charged under the PTA with (a) bringing the government into disrepute, (b) inciting ethnic and communal animosities, and (c) receiving funds from terrorist organisations. All these charges were based on two articles he had written in 2006 in the North-East Herald. The PTA had in fact been suspended following the ceasefire agreement between the government and the Tamil Tigers in February 2002.
Not many people seem aware of what he wrote. The relevant passages from two articles which expressed critical opinions about the government’s treatment of Tamil civilians affected by armed conflict were as follows: A July 2006 editorial headlined, ‘Providing security to Tamils now will define northeastern politics of the future’ concluded: “It is fairly obvious that the government is not going to offer them any protection. In fact it is the state security forces that are the main perpetrators of the killings.” A second article published in November 2006 addressed the humanitarian situation in the eastern town of Vaharai, where warfare included attacks on civilian areas. It accused the government of starving and endangering civilians to further political and strategic military objectives. It took almost two years and a visit by Tissanayagam for some other purpose for the Police to realise that he needed to be charged for ‘inciting communal disharmony’. Tissanayagam was convicted by High Court judge Deepali Wijesundara on three counts: to 20 years hard labour!
This is the first time a journalist has been convicted under the PTA Under the notorious PTA Ragupathi Sharma was arrested in connection with the suicide bomb attack on former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. On 2015 September 30, he was handed a 290 year suspended sentence by Colombo High Court Judge Padmini N. Ranawaka Gunathilaka to be served in 30 years/ He was a Brahmin priest employed by a temple in Colombo.
I suggest if these judges are still around, cases against Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members must be sent to them for hearing and sentence!

IT IS BECAUSE THE GOD IS ALSO FED UP OF HIS AND HIS FAMILY’S CRIMES COMMITTED AGAINST SRILANKANS IRRESPECTIVE OF RACE OR RELIGION. THIS IS ONLY A START AND MUCH MORE PUNISHMENTS WILL FOLLOW IN DIFFERENT FORMS IN THE PASSAGE OF TIME, I GIVE BELOW SOME OF THE THINGS PREVIOUS REGIME HAS DONE!!

Attacks on two TV stations by Government goons where in both cases the perpetrators were identified but no action was taken.
The rape and murder case against the Tangalle Pradeeshiya Chairman where for two years absolutely no action was taken.
The humiliating incident where a Samurdhi office was tried to a tree.
The attacks by the Bodu Bala Sena on Muslims in Aluthgama which received widespread international condemnation.
Attacks on hundreds of Churches in all parts of the country.
Involvement of politicians including ministers in drug and ethanol peddling
In all the above cases not one word was said by the President who just allowed the situation to get out of control and failed to take action against any of the police officers who were involved in these incidents..
The repercussions of the draconian 18th amendment were listed below.
The emergence of a completely subservient judiciary with many questionable appointments to the highest courts.
The deterioration and politicization of the once highly respected public service with the appointment of political stooges
The virtual collapse of the once highly respected foreign service with the appointment of political stooges and family siblings
The politicization of the police service where both senior and junior police officers dare not take action through fear of reprisals and punishment transfers.

This man and his party can not provide any future vision, mission or economic plan for Sri Lanka.
So he always talks about Rajapkses and Avan Guard. But that is why they (peole) have appointed the new government. So that he and his party needs to look at the performance of the new government.

I think that it is time that this man should step down from the JVP leadership. Lalkantha is much better to be the leader of the JVP. This man simply become a spokesperson for the UNP to cover up their in ability to run the present government.

Will the President appoint a separate court to investigate these or will he continue to protect the accused the same way he is protecting the soldiers who committed human rights violations?

JVP is good mainly at finding faults with others. When they are given a job they are reluctant to call a spade a spade. Look at the COPE report. Chairman Handunetti was reluctant to document PM Ranil Wickremasinghe’s direct/indirect involvement in the CB Bond issue. At least he should have added a time-line so SL voter can understand what exactly happened during that period.
Not only that, He allowed UNP’s ‘Footnote clique’ to hijack the report by letting them add what they wanted. Though he had the power and authority exercised by the Speaker of the House he acted like another Rathu Ali Patiya (red baby elephant: a criticism leveled at the JVP leadership).
If this is the case how can Sri Lankan voters trust the JVP? My understanding is the JVP MPs need more maturity if they ever plan to come to power. In the first place, they should understand certain hidden hands behind Yahapalan crooks and consult a few professionals before they submit crucial reports.
