Former staff sergeant of the Army Sunil Ratnayake was released from death row on a special presidential pardon today.
Ratnayake was sentenced to death over murder of of eight Tamil civilians including four children in Mirusuvil, Jaffna on 19th December 2000.
Sunil Ratnayake was sentenced to death on June 25, 2015 after a 13-year-trial.
on 24 Dec. 2000, some bodies were found in the septic tank of a toilet by the side of the army camp. The matter was then reported to the Chavakacheri Courts. When the judge inspected the scene, four youths under the age of 18 were discovered besides four men with decomposed bodies, throats slit and eyes blindfolded. Some had their legs and hands chopped off. One had his skin peeled, looking pink. Among the eight murder victims was five-year-old Visvarayan Prasath. Even the most hard-hearted could not fail to be moved by the sight.
Further to it, an inquiry was held at the Chavakacheri Magistrate’s Court and a report was sent to the Attorney General’s Department. The Attorney General filed action in the Jaffna High Court. A direct and important eye-witness was Ponniah Maheswaran, besides others. Staff Sergeant Ratnayake was given a death sentence. Appeal to the Supreme Court failed.

This massacre happened in December 2000, during CBK ‘s era.. Initially 14 people were indicted for murdering 8 civilians including 5 , 15 and 18 years old boys. In the middle of the trial, first 9 and then another 5 were acquitted of all the charges against them. Finally Rathnayake was sentenced to death over murder of eight Tamil civilians. The judgement, delivered by the High Court was confirmed by the Appeal court and Sunil Rathnayake was sent to jail. End of the story.
Still I am unable to understand one thing. Did he himself carry out this massacre? No one assisted? Can a single man kill 8 people , such a brutal way?
If anyone assisted , then where are they now? Why they were not traced and brought to book?

TWENTY SIX young Tamil men were massacred on the night. There were literally tens/hundreds of miscreants responsible; most of all the police and army who had a sacred duty of care to protect the young men who were in their charge. They failed, and no one was charged for dereliction of duty. Today, some of the culprits strut about Bandarawela and Diyatalawa; and the people of the area know who they are.
I am not a Tamil and the temptation is to stand back and say ‘nothing to do with me’. WRONG! I saw denial in the 50’s and 60’s and not enough stood up to be counted. See where it has got us to.

It seems it is rare and remarkable to stick up for justice in this country of deep divisive communal feelings.
But why is it so difficult to see such brutality that happened in daylight under the oversight of country’s armed forces and clearly recognize how the state has failed these communities throughout history?
Gosh. Such Unimaginable horror! And too many who cannot careless about those innocent butchered by the state.
