Army Officer Re-Remanded Over Lasantha Killing, Facing New Charges Over Rivira Editor Attack

Army Intelligence Officer Premananda Udalagama arrested in connection to the murder of Sunday Leader founder editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, has been further remanded till August 11 by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate.

Udalagama is also facing fresh charges in another journalist attack, after the court granted permission to the CID to produce the suspect before the Gampaha magistrate in connection to the attack on Rivira Newspaper editor Upali Tennakoon, in 2009.

Last week, Udalagama was identified as the kidnapper of Dias, the driver of Wickrematunge. Dias was reportedly kidnaped a few months after Wickrematunge’s assassination, after he reportedly went around claiming that former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was behind Wickrematunge’s assasination.

Udalagama was arrested mid last month by the CID in connection to Wickrematunge’s murder.

And who was giving orders to police and military during abductions and killings?

Of course, the commander in chief MaRa. Look at the face of the Editor; do you want to bring the perpetrator of this crime (MaRa) back to power through Pada Yadthra?

I always said had the new govt appointed Sarath Fonseka to head all the investigations of the last govt, today we would have seen all the robbed money back in our state coffers and the crooks in jail.

MITHRI, RANNIL ITS NOT TOO LATE TO APPOINT SARATH FONSEKA TO HEAD FCID, BRIBERY AND OTHER INVESTIGATING ORGANS OF THE GOVT.

PLS ALSO REMOVE WIJEDASA RAJAPAKSE FROM HIS POST AS MIN OF JUSTICE AS HE WILL BLOCK ANY ACTION AGAINST GOTA AS HE HAD SAID SO. ALSO WE SAW HIS PICS OF PRIVATE TRIP TO THE USA WITH NISSANKA SENADHIPATHI WHILST CLAIMING HE DIDN’T KNOW THE CHAP AND TRYING TO BLOCK THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE FLOATING ARMOURY.

        Good points Richard!!! Bravo!!!

My3 & RW don’t love the country. If they do, MaRa and his whole murderous gang would be in jail by now, not in Pada Yartra. There is no one fit to do that job (or have the motivation)other than Sarath Fonseka in Sri Lanka if he is appointed as Law & Order Minister. Gota will be in jail within 24 hrs. The rest will follow suit.

There is no reason for members of Intelligence groups to murder Journalists or any other individual. They certainly carried out some body’s instructions. What we are interested is to find out who misused the personal from the Forces for their dirty work. Those are the individuals who should be exposed and punished.

LTTE killed so many journalists, police officers, blew up things. Financeirs are living overseas.

All those are for a reason.

anything govt did should be investigated because that helps reconciliation by allowing Tamil dalits to take revenge.

Good punishment for carrying out orders.

black eyes, bandaged hands, hospital stays and jail.

Everything says, dumb politicians and beaurucrats screwed it up. those who obeyed the orders are suffering.

Most journalists don’t have journaliststic ethics or they don’t have a value system as most other sri lankans are.

They just mislead public for in order to feed their families or just to earn their living.

So, they all get what they really deserve.

Recently there were bursts of outrage over Ranil’s verbal outbursts regarding media coverage and interpretations. The furore is justified in a democracy.

But compare the Ranil incident with the 2009 attack on Rivira Newspaper editor Upali Tennakoon.

During the reign of Rajapaksa family they behaved like demi-gods. Those serving under them slavishly followed their orders. Life was worthless for editors, reporters, businessmen, sportsmen etc. Anyone who choose to cross the line or tried to step on their toes were sentenced to death by firing squads. Yesterday, Colombo Fort Magistrate Mohammed Mihal, re-remanded till August 10, 2016, former Senior DIG Anura Senanayake and the then OIC Crimes of Narahenpita in respect of the killing of ruggerite Thajudeen, in Colombo on May 12, 2012. The Senior State Counsel, Dilan Ratnayake told the Court, that the telephone calls that reached the office of the OIC had been investigated by the CID. Some of the calls had been from the Presidential Secretariat. They were yet to be investigated. This shows the orders to assault, kidnap or killed critics originated from the presidential secretariat. And it is a well knows fact that Gotabhaya gave orders to police/army personnel to carry out these foul acts.

remanding and re remanding the sprats is a waste of time hoodwinking the people.

the genuineness of this investigation to catch the culprits who organised the lasantha murder will be judged by the following steps

1.Will the CID get a statement from lal wickremetunge on his conversations with mahinda where he had stated that mahinda told him twice that fonseka had killed his brother.

2.Will the CID then question mahinda as to the statement mad to them by lal wickremetunge and ask whether he did indeed make such statements and why.

3.Will the CID question Ranil wickremesinghe on his statement just after the murder, that fonseka was behind the killing of lasantha.A statement has to be got from the PM as to why he said such a thing.

unless these steps are taken we might as well forget about this investigation, which is merely being conducted to show foreign governments.

I don’t think SF had anything to do with this. He was a professional soldier that worked by the rule book whereas there were some people who were seen to run parallel operations after the war. Lasantha himself made a lot of enemies exposing financial misappropriations of individuals, the case was in the courts much later after the end of the war; as far back as 2005 he published an article in his Sunday paper that he was keeping a death threat type phone call in his mobile, a call that he alleged to have received from a very very high level politician for writing in his newspapers some improper things about the politics family. I remember reading that article by Lasantha.

i hope you are right bo,but PM had said in parliament that it was fonseka and it is in the hansard. So if the CID is doing a genuine investigation why has it not asked the PM for an expalnation as to why he brought such a serious allegation against the army commander at that time and why to day before the investigation is over he has made the same army commander a cabinet minister. Are we to become the laughing stock of the rest of the world with a high profile case like this without the CID getting a statement from the PM as his sources at that time.

Also people know what fonseka is capable of because of the keith noyakar case where he was beaten very badly and i read somewhere a part of his penis cut off. This happened just after he had written an article criticising fonseka for using the army as his private fiefdom. So much for your professional soldier crap.fonseka is indeed one of the best soldiers in the world, but do you know what soldiers are meant to do.Kill, kill and kill their enemy.after some time they become programmed to do so and the enemy can become a personal one too.

I saw a advertisement in a foreign country for the military recruitment. It was pasted in their HQ walls. The requirements were bloodthirstiness, murderous qualities, serial killers etc.It was a joke of course but showed that a good soldier is not necessarily a nice guy too.

We had a tough war with a cruel enemy and the right man for the job to take them on was fonseka, not an angel. So journos also maybe should have been a bit careful in this war environment when they start to criticise such people.

Now that the war is over their use by date is over too. However we must not forget the immense contribution they made to eradicate terrorism.

with lasantha , i feel he was killed because of the MIG fighter planes issue and he was going to give evidence in court one week before he was killed.

The question is did fonseka help gota in this murder. After all they were good buddies since ananda college, but fell out over the white flag case.

I personally feel that this is not the correct time to pursue this case.

Shankar, you said PM? If you mean RW? He was not PM then, and was alleging false utterances in the parliament things which he could not prove. Just abusing parliamentary privileges at the time to denigrate all those fighting the war against terrorists. RW thought that his unilateral betrayal of the country and splitting it up with the connivance of Norwegian foreigners was the only solution to terrorism. MR proved he was wrong and liberated the country instead. RW during the latter part of the war along with his lieutenants were mocking the defence forces efforts to put down terrorism. Remember the notorious statement in the parliament, “they say they were marching to Alimankada, but they are going to Pamankada instead”. Which UNP idiot made those cussed remarks? Is he the one sitting shamelessly in the speakers chair? Those were the UNP derogatory statement about the work of our heroes, but the heroes made those that uttered those abuse to eat their hats, better said made them eat their own balls. RW was party to that abuse at the time, so whatever he said in the parliament had no credibility at all. RW knows that he was lying his head off, otherwise why would he support SF to become the Presidential candidate, and why would he today appoint SF as an influential minister. The proof is in the action and not mouthing off nonsense from the glass house.

yes,i meant ranil all right. If what you say is true and this is the norm in parliament then god save the country.Anyway i believe the CID should interview him about his statements and make him regret his loose talk.

No it is the three musketeers Athos(mahinda),Porthos(gota)aramis(fonseka).

aramis got estranged with the other two who accused him of betrayal and lust for power. He was in the wilderness including prison for some time then his fortunes changed and he was appointed head of the sri lanka Swiss guards recently guarding the popes venice origin prince regent ranil the third.
