With the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) scheduled to submit its findings on the bond scam at Central Bank later this month, the Auditor General has confirmed that the country lost a staggering Rs. 1.6 billion due to the scam, highly placed sources said.

The Auditor General had reaffirmed his findings via a communication addressed to the COPE, which is currently finalizing the report on the Bond Scam, despite facing setbacks especially with several UNP members in the COPE attempting to derail the investigation, claiming that the Auditor General’s report is not ‘acceptable.’
Last months, Chairman of COPE Sunil Handunneththi assured Parliament that there was no move to sweep the bond scam under the carpet, in response to an allegation by Joint Opposition MP Bandula Gunawardane that the COPE was attempting to sweep the matter under the carpet due to pressure from certain groups within the government.
In June, the Colombo Telegraph reported that Auditor General implicated ex-Governor of Central Bank, Arjuna Mahendran in the bond scam in a 1200 report that was submitted to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and COPE. No sooner the highly damaging report on Mahendran was issued, several UNP members kicked off a campaign to work in a manner aimed at jeopardizing the COPE investigation, in their efforts to safeguard Mahendran, who was appointed to the Central Bank Governor post by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Soon after the Auditor General’s report was released, several UNP MPs had criticized the report and said that it was not acceptable and therefore a report from an independent party was required.
In September, Perpetual Treasuries Limited, linked to Arjun Aloysius, son-in-law of Mahendran, recorded a profit of Rs. 5.1 billion for the year ending March 2016. The firm has seen a staggering increase in its profits of up to 430 percent in comparison to the previous year. During, Mahendran’s tenure as Governor, Perpetual Treasuries made the news after being allegedly involved in the bond scam. Reports claimed that Perpetual Treasuries was issued, directly and indirectly, with Rs. 5 billion worth in bonds at 12.5%.

Mr Gamini Wijesinghe is a very eminent Chartered Accountant well versed in audit and finance. Judges have to make decisions on medical, financial engineering and many other technical matters without any specialized knowledge in any of these areas. Any body cannot find fault with judges. Auditor general has to do his job. If Auditor General is given proper powers like in US, India and other countries we do not need to have so many other commissions to investigate corruption. One cannot become a Chartered Accountant without a substantial knowledge of economics.

Most of the tamils in EUrope have achieved a lot compared to sinhalese. Be it in the UK, Germany, France or any other smaller countries in Europe – they have guided their second generations well. You may find at least few tamil doctors, engineers or other like academics scattered almost in every provinces of the mentioned countries. This is not the case with sinahalese, since they become infected easily to western cutlures immediately they put the feet on here. THat is actually the big difference. No all these tamil srilankens living in Germany, france, switzerland or anywhere are pro-LTTrs as you feel. Most of them are now happy the way that there is no civil war nt he country. Apart from seemingly crooked way the SIL got away with 50% of bonds the rest regarding profit made is highly speculative where 10 financial experts could interpret in 10 different figures. They made an upfront profit when they purchased the same bonds at a lower price than the rest of the bidders. That’s all the profit. Ranil’s plan to make SL a financial hub is for high profile white collar crooks to make easy money quickly like what AM did. How much of this money will be used for the development of the economy?
Singapore and Hong-Kong have very small land space but are strategically placed in terms of shipping routes. Their strengths are in trading and finance which they rightly identified and capitalized on.
SL on the other hand has a history and culture of agriculture and trading and have developed a manufacturing and industry capability recently. SL can never be a financial hub as these white collar crooks and dreamers think and want only short term financial windfalls for themselves.
We have to improve our agriculture and industries as HE the president believes for long term benefits to the country. Ranil does not believe in this.

the problem here i see is, its a insider deal between fil & sil. normally even a small raffel ticket cannot be bought by interested parties, even if they win its not allowed. as it doesnt seem right, as insider party has info others dont have.
fine and thirty years in jail for both crooks.
