Bar Association Condemns Police Inaction During Ruhuna University Attack

The Standing Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on Rule of Law has today condemned the attitude adopted by the Police when students of the Ruhuna University were brutally assaulted by a mob led by the Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya and some members of the Provincial Council.

Issuing a statement the Standing Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on Rule of Law said; “This is another instant where the Police were mere spectators to the commission of crimes by politicians.  It is a pathetic sight to watch such episodes over and over again.  What these incidents show over and over again is the complete erosion of Rule of Law in our country.  It is now clear that the politicians enjoy absolute immunity in respect of the commission of crimes against persons who do not agree with them.  The dangerous aspect of it is the impunity with which these criminal acts are committed and the fact that the political leadership of our country as well as the law enforcement authorities has failed to at least show its concern regarding this development which makes it obvious that the political leadership is supportive of these acts.  It is seen that the law enforcement authorities has neither the will nor power to do their duty.”

“These actions by politicians and the attitude of the police has made the provisions on fundamental rights of citizens guaranteed in the constitution meaningless.  This will be our main focus at the ‘Public Forums’ that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka will be holding throughout the country to enlighten the people on the erosion of Rule of Law and the lack of accountability by the government.” the Standing Committee further said.

(If these revelations are true) – Shame on you Sanath J…. we all used to look up to you with such reverence when you donned Lanka’s cricketing gear and led form the front, but sadly you too have succumbed to the temptations that holding political office brings to lesser mortals.

We the People have also wondered out loud whether that other cricketing great, Kumar Sangakkara will ever take to politics (he has terrific and very broad credentials to be a strong contender), but the nagging worry is of course is whether he will become another Sanath J or best him and all the beggarly lot today to rise like a knight in shining armour to rescue Sri Lanka from the vermin that have infested it today….

We the People hang our heads in shame at your actions, Sanath.

No doubt some cricketers are thugs, because of the power and wealth. But people like Kumar Sangakkara are quite different. They come from a descent family and from a good educational background. Education matters a lot. Even Arjuna Ranatunga does not behave like Sanath Jayasuriya. Even among the cricketers, some go for cheap politics. They have got to learn a lot from England and Australia, if they are enter politics. I am sorry to say that Sanath has proved himself shameless person, as had reflected the qualities by joining the ranks of Wimal Weerasooriya, Dillon Perera, Mervyn Silva, MR and his siblings, etc.

    Hey Paras.

“The Standing Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on Rule of Law has today condemned the attitude adopted by the Police when students of the Ruhuna University were brutally assaulted by a mob led by the Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya and some members of the Provincial Council.”

    Apeanduwa. Our Govt.

    What is the problem?

A Govt, Elected by the Paras, to be over the Paras.

Can you paras go back to South India? You can play cricket, the Para-English game, there too!

The Paras will jolly well go to S.India to play the para English game of cricket but Jayalaitha won’t allow because she is a spoil sport,so what advise would you give the SL govt. to make her do? Take advise from Subramaniam Swamy?

      Abosolutely.

I don’t know why Bar Association even bothers to issue a statement. There is no point. What so ever.

There is no Justice in Sri Lanka. Country is ruined beyond any recognition.

Sanath J is a shame to the game he reprensented. A disappointment to millions of fans who routed for him.

      Cheers!

It is not fair to say Sanath act as the norm in SL. I guess still there are lot of better people who keeps some democracy and law in SL, still maintaining human levels bit above some African countries.. SanathJ like people dragging down the country with huge force, you need to raise your voice and act against such people, otherwise couple of Sanath Jayasuriyas could drag down the country to the hell very quickly….

Dear Bar Association,What do you expect from this BBS led govt? worse come to worst His Excellency Sanath will be asked to resign and promoted to a cabinet post. How can you blame the police for their inaction? They have families of their own to look after and they all will be working for this new thug when he becomes a cabinet minister doing his toilet cleaning shopping, carrying his mobile phone/s dog grooming etc – None of them want to end up like that foolish PC Saman.
If you really want to do a service to this country of ours which gave you free education educate the masses on good governance and create and agitate for a workable constitution to get rid of former pick pockets, moon shiners kudu Mudalalies who had become our political masters. By the way is it possible to have a clause in that new constitution to fix election dates on our county’s horoscope than someone’s?
    Thank you.

Of all people,I never expected Sanath Jayasuriya who gained national and international fame, and of whom sri lankans in and out of sri lanka are proud of,to assault young defenceless students in public.
He, who should have continued to be a shining example to our young generation, has commited a serious blunder.
If he, even now, admits his error and apologises,it will be a proof of his greatness, and mitigate the consequences.
He should also quit politics, entry to which was the cause of his behaviour.

Sooner or later the true character emerges. Just because he was a pol adi batsman jayasuriya became famous. Because sri lankans have nothing to be proud of the cricketers become heros. We never ask what qualifications, what education or what character they have ! So this ugly man from south became a hero. See what he has done ! First make a lot of money including match fixing. Then make about a dozen young girls into hopeless divorcees and destroy their lifes. Then MR makes him a MP as any criminal is welcomed to criminal brotherhood. Is this the kind of MP our parliament must have ?

Bar Association must condemned this also:

Today government hospitals helped people to evade judiciary by admitting them into hospitals before the court case date. Kalubowila hospital has many such cases and doctors (Bad unethical professionals) make money out of it. Remove such medical person names from SLMC register. Even this bogus patients go home day time and do the illegal works and come and stay in hospital getting support from many lower level hospital staffs. Finally they get even medical certificate to produce for court to postpone their criminal cases for months. If it is not accident or heart attack never admit such criminals to public hospitals to mis-lead judiciary. Kalubowila hospital is very famous for this type of ill works.

Even if you bring fresh clean water to a hog, the hog will run back into the mud. Sanath was a piece of whatever before cricket, after cricket he has become a piece of whatever again.

Some years ago I was travelling in a taxi to Delhi Airport and the Taxi Driver had high praise for SJ. His words, “Sir you are from Sanath Jayasuriya’s country”. What would be that Taxi Driver’s reaction if he now knows that SJ has become a thug?

The true colours of a selfish, bum sucking punk who had been bestowed with a great talent by god. Not content with making millions of tax free money from cricket, he had to join a bunch of uneducated thugs in politics to earn more money. Or is it the cricket crazy public who treat cricketers as some kind of gods that have made him this way?

There are people at all levels (high and low profiled) among us who would identify and tap the “Talents” ( good or bad) to achieve their ultimate goals. This one time “Hero” who emerged from the cricket world succumbed to the calls from such persons. That is how he entered the Parliament.

Since entering the field of “Politics” and into the Parliament, the country “LOST” a very valuable “ASSET”. He too “LOST” himself. That became evident from managing his own personal and public life. This terrific “downfall” has not stopped, even though he has once again entered the cricket arena. This man is a “rotten egg” now that will be used by our corrupt politicians at their own will and pleasure.

My only hope is that this fate will not fall on our other cricket heroes viz Sanga, Mahela and many others. They must take a “CUE” from this performing and living example, Sanath.

Let me also take this opportunity to pass on a word of praise and appreciation to another of our heroes – Murali for setting up an example and a bench mark for others to follow.

Dharmasoka changed from villain to hero! SJ changed from hero to villain! Sanath please, Just read the comments from top to bottom! Please get help from Sri Lankan Airlines if you cannot understand! Most have adored you in the past which includes me. You have spoken to me over the phone and asked for favours (nothing unethical) and I have obliged with prides (again nothing unethical) ! All that is gone!! What a waste! Yes you have money, power, and women when you want them! But that is not everything my dear boy!! You are now only a tentacle for Mahinda and Namal! How long are you going to suck the shi…t from their backsides! Look at Mervin, PB J, or others who are trampled, insulted near suffocation! They are helpless since they have had unethical favours from M/N R! Now they are blackmailed, unable to face realism, prisoners within!! You are one of them! What a pity, what would Tony Greig have to say?? Probably turning in his grave? Little Kalu your opening partner may be more ashamed of you than us! What about your own family (not the 3 extended airline families) ? Poor old sonna boi we weep for your past but not for the present!
Someone please send the comments to the bug….r

As for Sanga, I suppose if he is grasped by the tentacles of the Jarapassas, he too would be one! Give him a chance! MR must be looking for Sangas Achilles heal to blackmail him!

Murali may not have got caught that bad as Sonna, He did get on to platforms against Fonny! However he is not that bad except for his brother who does alcohol business with the governement!!!

Police inaction is the the intended consequences of the Jathikathwa Chinthanaya that arised first due to suppression of minority rights due to Islamophobia. When it raised its ugly head through BBS et al the status of impunity was maintained by the Police. The Police action is the root cause for all lawlessness in the country. In addition the Jathikathwa Policy adopted mainly after 1958 led the country into lawlessness.
Sri Lank’s per capita income was second only to Japan in 1956. At that time SL’s Per Capita income was USD 380 and Korea was USD 45. The unintended cosequences was Sri Lanka is fast growing backward in all human aspects including development. The Jathika Chinthana attitude led to erosion of all human values. This happens when the leaders of societies become weak

Now the situation has been further aggravated due to adoption of a Public Policy of survival and growth via BBS at el

Is there a common factor in smashing sixers and bashing heads of restless Varsity youth? Poor Sanath. He was invited to join the snake pit of politics and went ahead clueless – not realising what bottomless hell it is. I used to enjoy his unforgettable champagne batting. He brought a welcome character to Lanka’s growing cricket reputation. I hope he will choose to dump dirty politics soon to protect a name Sri Lanka – Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher – has learnt to adore.
