Basil Rajapaksa, brother and right hand man of ex president Mahinda Rajapaksa commenting on Army excesses when trying to quell protests in Rathupaswala said that it was so brutal that he could well imagine how they would have operated in the North.
Rajapaksa made these observations in an interview with the ‘Ada’ newspeper. He said in Sinhala: “ඉස්කෝලෙ ළමයිනෙ මිය ගියේ, අපේ ශාඛා සමිතිවල සාමාජිකයින්ගෙ කකුල් 21 වෙඩි වැදිලා කැඩිල තිබුණ. එතකොට මට උනත් හිතෙනවා මුන් උතුරෙ ගිහින් කොහොම මරන්න ඇතිද කියලා. ඒක මහ අමානුශික දෙයක්.”
The statement is in stark contrast to the general image of the security forces portrayed by that government.

He told them to leave the main road and go to the next “Handiya” but people didn’t listen because they expected a direct assurance from the government. The Minister responsible was Basil. A simple word from the Minister could have dispersed the protesters. But someone pigheaded like Basil would never go to the street to talk to protesters. Though we call them buffaloes, Ministers of this government at least go to the protesters and talk to people to calm down them even though they were hooted by the protesters.

The intervention of the International Editor Michael Slackman, out of the blue, blatantly violating the Code of Professional Ethics for Journalists which is to honour and respect the reputation of the subject of the article and his or her right to defend, is a clear indication that New Joke Times has an obvious political motive for publishing manipulative information against the former President.
The “right to defend” of the former President by way of conducting a press conference or issuing a statement should not be considered as “silencing critics” or “curbing press freedom” unless of course the New Joke Times is not very sure of the origin of the information carried in their article. Michael Slackman should not resort to cheap ways to block former President’s right to defend by him or his supporters.
Slackman should explain as to what made him to think that political writers paid by Minister Mangala Samaraweera are above criticism?

Thanks for directing that question to me of all people! I feel flattered. I will try to answer you as best I can, using the few insights I’ve got from associating with people as a government village school master. By the way, I assume that you are a Tamil speaker who doesn’t understand what is happening in the South.

We should never under-estimate the Rajapaksas. What a tragedy Prof. G.L. Peiris has been! We respected him so much as a scholar and a liberal. But even in our Sinhalese society, caste is a sufficient factor to have lessened his chances long before people like us got disillusioned with him. He would have realised even fifty years ago that despite his wealth and academic brilliance getting to the very top would have been impossible.

On the other hand, he was a good Professor of Law, and even as Vice-Chancellor of the Colombo University he was respected. His first entry in to politics was also a welcome move; what happened after that, I just don’t know. Today, he is associated with opportunism and lack of guiding principles.
.
Now, he can be manipulated in any way; fielding him would give the Rajapaksas certain advantages. The farmers do form a majority of the Sinhalese, but all other castes naturally resent this seeming reservation of the highest positions for one group. This can be exploited as Ranasinghe Premadasa succeeded in doing, so that a GLP candidature could garner all votes from other castes.

That is the downside; but there are other aspects of it – and the week-end developments in the Maldives are there to prove to us that even the good politicians must be alive to realities.

Yameen has made laws which make it impossible for any strong or charismatic leader to contest: There is this ridiculous trumped up charge against Anni – accusing that peace-loving man of being a “Terrorist” – reminiscent of what J.R.J. did to Vijaya Kumaranatunga. Anni was sentenced to 13 years in jail, but has managed to escape and is directing operations from Sri Lanka. People who have been sentenced cannot contest; nor can those above the age of 65; nor those have had foreign citizenship – which they may have renounced years ago; nor those who have sought refuge abroad.

So, the obvious thing to do is to field a quiet, unassuming man who will do nothing flamboyant to get himself disqualified.

For us, the task is far more challenging. We have to build up some of those, like Suganthika Fernando, who are may not be known to many Sri Lankans. Nagananda is as an older lawyer who has consistently fought corruption. And there are genuine supporters of the now discredited Yahapalanaya. I wonder if you have heard of Janaranjana, Profs Viyangoada, Wijesundera, and Parakrama:

My guess is that “Rajapakse family” is not desired by, leave alone the CT readers but even by the Western Powers that may be and as such neither BR nor GR would be released from their citizenship of the US even if they make an application of renunciation. Hence none of them can be a Presidential candidate as the Election Commission will have to reject their nomination without any valid renunciation as someone already would have got proof of their dual citizenship from the relevant state organization using the RTI and submitting the same as reasons of objection for nomination. If my guess is right, MR would field someone else not quite heard of but would perform anything and everything he wants perhaps by mid-2019 as the “pohottuwa” candidate. Noting that even under the “Yahapalana” government there is muzzling of the media for attacks against “Maharajano” one could expect the extent of muzzling if an MR stooge gets elected. What if the mere reading of the CT alone is enough to be a capital offence and the punishment could be a summary execution by the white van method? Take into account that the thumping majority of voters are not CT readers and their concerns must be addressed by this government at least in the form of damage control. Therefore, the target of CT patronizes should be the election of a Government in which we can even read the CT in peace. Hence as per my guess neither “Basil bashing” nor “Gota or Gotler bashing” has no real value in a lead article but it should be one that directs the present government towards addressing concerns of the majority.

In 2016, I posted a comment saying that Pohottuwa (Podu Jana Peramuna) was formed with Ranil’s bond scam money. I said that Mahinda has a deal with Ranil. That may have hurt Mahinda. But that is how I saw it. So I refused to support JO. Then in the latter part of 2017, I realized that it was actually Basil who had the deal with Ranil, not Mahinda and that it was Basil who remote controls Mahinda and JO in support of Ranil.
Now he is taking trouble to make people break Mahinda’s camp. Otherwise no man in his right mind would make a statement like that about Rathupaswela. I said this many times already to Wimal. Basil will never help Mahinda’s candidate to win the next Presidential election. He will work against their victory.
