The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has issued through its Secretary, a strong statement, condemning an unacceptable attack on some lawyers, who have been named and portrayed in a negative way for providing legal services to persons alleged to be involved in offences involving terrorism.

In the statement, it is pointed out with reference to legal provisions, that it is the duty of all lawyers to provide services to all those who seek professional assistance. The statement emphasizes that such attacks amount to obstruction of justice and should not be tolerated. It also says that the BASL supports the lawyers named to continue to discharge their professional duties without fear or favour.

No lawyer is able to enter any police station in sri lanka,and be present during interrogation and advise any citizen arrested by the police.
Same is true of those “arrested” by armed forces personnel, and taken to army camps.
When lawyers are so enabled, we will have at least a semblance of democracy.
In many countries, any citizen can refuse to be interrogated in the absence of a lawyer.
In many countries, anyone arrested is informed of his right to remain silent, and the state provides the services of an attorney to advise him.

Everything has become achcharu in the current administration. I mean every thing to this day :(((( I even heard earlier programs broadcasted by Balumgala- in which prisoners have kept live contact with outside world thorugh telephone calls – these were drug dealers… so, how come that go that far… if the rule of law under the MR aadministration is failure free ?

The Sri Lankan lawyers have no honour or self respect. They all canvass and stand in line to be appointed President’s Counsel but then say Presidency is corrupt ! As long as they can make money they will support any one. After making money they then want political positions and appointments. Only way to get into some official position is either by supporting President Rajapakse or opposing him . Those who cannot get into Rajapakse circles try to get into Ranil Wickramasinghe circle. To do these things they have to hold their nose and be half blind ( to avoid the stink and ignore the obvious wrong doings). Maybe Rajapakse and Ranil also hold their noses when they meet the lawyers !The whole thing is a game to make money and obtain positions.
Those who cannot do these things now go to countries like Fiji to work as judges. Why ? Because it is a military goverment which cannot attract good quality lawyers from self respecting countries who for obvious reasons do not want to serve a military dictatorship ! Of course for Sri Lankan lawyers there are no moral considerations .What is the rule of law in a goverment like Fiji which came into power through a military coup deposing a democratically elected government ? But even judges from Supreme Court of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka are serving the military goverment of Fiji as judges! Why doesnt some one challange this in court as these judges have taken an oath to uphold democratic principles ? Or maybe that is only applicable in Sri Lanka. Outside our shores they can even commit murder ( no not only the queen’s language !)
