Buddha’s teachings can be 100% practiced only by those who desire to separate themselves from worldly affairs and seek enlightenment in a forest or hermitage.
Sinhala Buddhists are just ordinary folks who treasure Buddhism for it’s gentleness and absence of compulsion but one cannot expect them to abide 100% by Buddhist principles in a “dog eat dog” world.
If there is no buddhism there will be no buddhists. Hence someone must do the distasteful job of defending Buddhism even at the cost of going against Buddha’s teaching of non-violence like some ancient Sinhalese kings did.
