Mass Child Marriage being performed in the town of Alwar of Rajasthan, India. Child marriages are illegal in India, but are still performed in some places, due to local religious and cultural beliefs which support and justify the cultural practice. The practice of child marriage in rural India is deeply rooted in cultural values and grounded in social structures. The caste system is also believed to have contributed to the growth of child marriage. Apni Beti, Apna Dhan (ABAD), which translates to “Our Daughter, Our Wealth,” is one of India’s first conditional cash transfer programs dedicated to delaying young marriages across the nation. In 1994, the Indian government implemented this program in the state of Haryana. On the birth of a mother’s first, second, or third child, they are set to receive 500 rupees, or 11 USD, within the first 15 days to cover their post-delivery needs. Along with this, the government gives 2,500 rupees, or 55 USD, to invest in a long-term savings bond in the daughter’s name, which can be later cashed for 25,000 rupees, or 550 USD, after her 18 birthday. She can only receive the money if she is not married. If a healthy girl attains puberty means she is ready to reproduce. The 16 year or 18 year bar is man-made. It is stealing the biological rights of a girl’s body. So the decision to marry should be taken by the girl herself and not by the parents or the society. I recently read about a 16 years old girl killing her parents who denied her rights to have an affair with a boy. If you conduct a confidential survey among children under 18 who attained puberty to find out whether they wish to marry and settle in life rather than going to study, an overwhelming majority will opt for settling down early. Hence, I think denying a girl’s right to marry after puberty is an abuse of her rights and not the other way.
About forced marriages, whether it is a minor or major and whether it is a Muslim or non-Muslim, it is an offence irrespective of the girl’s age and the parents should be punished by general law.

Amarasiri, I agree that there are child marriages among Muslim communities. But I do not agree that every such child dies after first night. Your cases are few exceptional cases. Custom is not based on exceptional cases. In Sweden, a father, non-Muslim, raped his daughter and kept her in basement for many years. Has Sweden banned fathers from daughters? In US, a man captured school going girls and kept in a closed house for many years. In UK, parents kept own children in closed houses for many years, in one case a child starved to death. What US and UK have done about that? There are many such cases involving non-Muslims. You do not paint a religion factor to them in those cases but if it involves a Muslim you are up in arms! If 14 percent of girls are married under 15 in Yemen, how many percentage died? I am sure you do not have the answer because your study is incomplete and stopped at a point where you wanted. World is very old and human culture evolves with time. My mother married when she was 16 and my grandma married when she was about 11, they lived very happy life. However, in our generation nobody marries under 20 and I think it is a cultural evolution. I heard about Sri Lankan women roaming around half-naked several decades ago. No body do it now except in some clubs where the so-called very civilized people gather. The Muslim culture in Yemen, Nigeria etc is at a certain point and it will evolve with time. We don’t know which way it would evolve, Mulla way or other way, just leave their life to them. But you and the West should understand that they have a culture and one shouldn’t insult that culture. Yemeni are proud to say that their ancestors introduced multi-story buildings to the world. They respect their culture. Every man in Yemen carries a knife as a part of his costume even now. They are poor in UN standards but not in Yemen standards. You are talking from a country where people perished when protested for clean water! So, instead of searching for statistics on Muslim children and their life standard over the internet, you better first study about the situation in Sri Lanka!

In India per day how many women are being raped? only one or two cases will show on the media. If you were watching NDTV these days,you would be familiar with three sex scandals in India. BJP’s PM candidate Modi is in news for appearing with a girl in a 2008 photo whom he was snooping later on. Second is about the famous Tehelka editor Tejpal now in remand for molesting a female journo. Third is the Supreme Court Judge (Rtd) Ganguly being investigated by a high level committee for alleged molesting of a Law apprentice. All three were non-Muslim high profile people in their sixties and the victims are non-Muslim girls in their twenties (about forty years difference). A boy under eighteen was imprisoned for three years for raping and killing a medical student. His companions were sentenced to death. Because the boy was few days less than 18 years, he was tried at a juvenile court which has power to grant maximum of 3 years imprisonment for any crime; all involved were non-Muslims. The reason for my quoting those news is that whether the men are over sixty or under eighteen, they have sexual desires irrespective of the religion, age or social status. The artificial bar of 18 years is man made and does not have any link to biological needs. Marrying after gaining experience in the society may be good if the men around are Buddhas! But practically what happens is different. Girls are abused at home by male siblings and relatives, by teachers at schools, from conductor to driver and everybody in between in the buses, jacked in crowds even at Pereheras, squeezed under umbrellas, molested behind shrubs in parks, kissed in the last raw of theaters and robbed every thing left at the university and workplace! Finally when she poses like a Virgin Mary for wedding photograph, she already lost everything what Mary had. Sadly, she is already in her thirties and can contribute only to an aging population. My argument is not based on Islam. What I am telling is that people lose about 15 potential years lonely starving for sex and hunt for illicit pleasure to compensate that later. No animal or plant postpone breeding for better life. So the man made artificial age limits are against the nature!

You see crows and bats around Colombo, does anybody do a birth-control to them? Yet have they out numbered you? The nature knows how to keep a balance. If human increases in number, wars and diseases will break out to control the number. Saudi which had Islamic way of life for more than 1400 years has hardly reached 20 million. In my opinion if a man or woman marries early he or she will have more years to grow up their children and grand children in a well mannered way. Otherwise, the nextgen will be like most of the non-Muslim readers who comment in an uncivilized way in this public forum. I can imagine how their parents would look like and behave like! Your theory of marrying late and having limited number of children will end up in unproductive over-aged community and that is what you should call ‘unsustainable level’!.

So you have proven that you have a metal brain that has stuck somewhere thinking man is Supreme. Refresh your mind watching the buses floating over Galle bus stand during Tsunami, then go to Maharagama Cancer hospital and see some child patients, now visit to Mullivaikal and smell the burned skeletons. Ready, now place a coin in your table, close your eyes and imagine that the coin is the sun, now imagine that there is a tiny dot in your neighbor’s house, that is the earth, imagine an atom in the dot, that is Sri Lanka, imagine a proton in the nucleus of the atom, that is you and now imagine a photon size particle in the proton and that is your brain. We are happy to use inventions but they are not taking one to where he wanted to be. I have seen many grandfathers living 90+, parents living 80+, uncles living 70+ and friends struggling 40+.! In this most civilized, well advanced Sri Lanka very rarely people cross 100 mark while supposedly their counterparts in Saudi and Mongolia marry classmates of great grand daughters (just an imagined statement). Inventions may give you the feeling that you have beaten the nature, but that feeling is temporary and will remain only until you find it out how helpless small creature you are. I found it when one of my close relative, even after chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplant, was slowly dying in front of me due to leukemia!

We can’t help if one is consumed with propaganda and insists on spreading false information. Islam in fact permits marriages only at puberty for both Males and Females and certain conditions have to be met, such as mental maturity / financial ability for Males and many other factors are taken into account by their respective guardians.
Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) received divine inspiration in matters concerning his life. Before describing the rationale behind this married relation, let it be known that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) married Sayyida Aisha (RA) not out of his own desire rather it was a Divine inspiration. One need to note that for the first 54 years of his life he had only one wife, which was Sayyida Khadija (RA). He spent his entire youth with her and she was a two time widowed woman, 15 years elder to him. For the next four years, his only wife was Sayyidah Sa’uda(RA).
One must first understand that 1400 years ago was a very different time than now, times have changed since then and so have humans. 1400 years ago it was something very common to marry young girls, in fact they were not considered young girls, and rather they were considered young women back then. Back then the average life span of people were around 42 years of age.
It is a historic fact that girls from the ages of 9 to 14 were being married in Europe, Asia, and Africa, in fact even in the US girls at the age of 10 were also being married just a century ago. Yet with these facts no historian claims that all these people were sick perverts. Historians would call anyone who made such a claim to be arrogant and very stupid who has no grasp or understanding of history.

Muhammad put an end to slavery, but those Muslims created the tales about Muhammad that he was keeping Loundi and slave. Other than this, they made very wide and effective propagation about abundant wives and making a premature small girl as wife. Whereas the clean and pure characters of those venerable people who accepted the Muhammadi lesson is exposed to the world.
