BTF Condemns Minister Ranawaka’s Threatening Statement Against Tamils

By Colombo Telegraph –

“The British Tamils Forum (BTF) strongly condemns the utterly irresponsible and threatening statement by Sri Lankan cabinet minister Champika Ranawaka inciting massacre of Tamils.” Says BTF.

One Mullivaikkal is enough. Don’t try to get 100 more” -Minister Champika Ranawaka

Issuing a statement BTF says “With no more forces to protect them the Tamil speaking people of the island are fearful of another massacre in the near future.  We therefore call upon the international community to be on the alert to protect the Tamil people against the Sri Lankan Sinhala state which is hell bent on ridding the island of all people of different cultural and religious believes to fulfill its dream of changing it into a mono-ethnic Sinhala/Buddhist country.”

Below we give the full satatement issued by The British Tamils Forum

The British Tamils Forum (BTF) strongly condemns the utterly irresponsible and threatening statement by Sri Lankan cabinet minister Champika Ranawaka inciting massacre of Tamils.

Addressing the media in Colombo, Power and Energy minister Champika Ranawaka, leader of Sinhala right wing Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) said, “One Mullivaikkal is enough. Don’t try to get 100 more”. Referring to a recent speech of the leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), R.Sampanthan during the national convention of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK), the minister said “if Sambanthan is calling us to a fight, our nation [our race] will proudly accept the challenge”.

Mulliviakkal is the place in which more than 40,000 of innocent Tamil men women and children were massacred by the Sri Lankan State in 2009 and must be noted that over 146,000 people are still unaccounted for..  This genocidal massacre is remembered by the Tamil people world over as the Mullivaikal Remembrance in May.

JHU is lead by Buddhist monks and they are known for promoting Sinhala-Buddhist extremist ideology in the Island and key partners of the ruling Peoples alliance party led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

It is difficult to grasp how Jathika Hela Urumaya, a political entity comprised of Buddhist Monks, who presumably abide by a non-violent philosophy, can encourage and partake in the political violence against the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. Mr. Ranawaka’s threat of a “100 more Mullivaikkals” is acceptance of the fact that the GOSL carried out the massacre with the intent of killing the Tamils as part or whole. His nonchalant statement can perhaps be explained by examining the ideology of Anagaraka Dharmapala, a leading figure of Buddhism in the 20th century who held the view that Tamils and other non-Sinhalese people do not belong on the island.

It is undeniable that it is this ideology that dominates the policies and actions of the current government and which inevitably led to the massacre of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The BTF sees this statement of the cabinet minister as a prelude to state sponsored massacres against the Tamil people  A speech by the leader of the TNA setting out the Tamil people’s right to self-determination in a democratic non-violent manner has been responded to by the cabinet minister inciting violence against the Tamil people.

A non-violent cry for equality and freedom from persecution is being met with incitement of violence by the Sri Lankan state.   This statement is not dissimilar to the statement by the then president J R Jayawardene which resulted in the anti-Tamils pogrom nearly 30 years ago; The Black July 1983, in which more than 3000 innocent Tamil men, women and children were massacred in their homes and on the streets in the south of the Island.

Just two weeks before the July 83 pogrom, President Jayawardene in an interview with a correspondent of a London Daily stated,  “I am not worried about the opinion of the Jaffna people now… Now we cannot think of them. Not about their lives or of their opinion about us… The more you put pressure in the North, the happier the Sinhala people will be here…really, if I starve the Tamils out, the Sinhala people will be happy”.

“In 14 minutes the blood of every Tamil in the country can be sacrificed to the land by us” said the then cabinet minister Gamini Dissanayake, soon after the 1983 riots

With the war now ended when people are hoping to return to a period without bloodshed the Cabinet minister is vying for the Tamil people’s blood by his racist and provocative speech. These statements from prominent Sinhala leaders clearly exhibit the systematic Structural Genocide agenda of the Sinhala extremist backed Sri Lankan state.

It was only two months ago, on 14th April 2012 many houses belonging to Tamil people were set ablaze and Tamil youth in the area beaten up by the Sri Lankan military, in Galle in the south of the island.  Refusal by a Tamil youth to address a Sinhala soldier in civvies as “Sir” was the trigger for this attack on the Tamil people.   On 20th April 2012 a Sinhala mob led by Buddhist monks firebombed a Mosque in Dambulla and threatened Muslim and Tamil people who had lived in the area for centuries to vacate the place claiming that it was a Buddhist sacred zone.

The Tamil and Muslim people are living on a knife edge, extremely fearful of the island returning to the repeated pogroms against them as in 1958, 1961, 1963, 1977, 1981 and 1983.  These state sponsored pogroms against the Tamil people resulted in an armed resistance movement, which had been a major factor in the lull of such attacks in the past 30 years.

With no more forces to protect them the Tamil speaking people of the island are fearful of another massacre in the near future.  We therefore call upon the international community to be on the alert to protect the Tamil people against the Sri Lankan Sinhala state which is hell bent on ridding the island of all people of different cultural and religious believes to fulfill its dream of changing it into a mono-ethnic Sinhala/Buddhist country.

Words are not enough to express the frustration this government has brought over this land with ‘paha paas’ (even that is doubtful) hooligans and idiots running our parliament and nation. This sadly mirrors the new age buddhist thinking (as the fellow represents the JHU) with their ‘radical’ buddhist philosophy. For crying out loud, where in the pit of hell did this new ‘violent’ buddhism come from???

The LRRC had recommended a Law against the Incitement to racial, religious and ethnic hatred and hate speech. This Pathala Ranaviru character needs to be tired and locked up for threats against minorities and disturbing the peace.
He is so uneducated that he once returned from Burma and praise the military junta and that country’s development to the skies is a laughable article published in a newspaper that is a piece of trash, only fit to wipe mahinda rajapakse’s ass – and guess what like most of the rest of the most undereducated cabinet in the history of Lanka he cannot speak two sentences of English – the language of international knowledge production, technical competence and development that people who head ministries should have!

There are some post war heroes like this man Patali Ranawaka or similar who never ever did something to win this war, never been at the war front, sent his children to Ananda and Nalanda college to educate, left the battle to the poor sinhalese fools, shouts after completing the dirty job as if he has done something to win.

He believes you guys, poor sinhalese farmers, are born to serve his clan and family

Have you been to his house? Do you know how many sinhalese “servants” he has and how much he pays them for a month? Do you know whether they get the same food like him and his family?

Do you need some more information?

Pathala Chamipka who represents the JHU is an insult, as is that organization, to Buddhism — a philosophical and political doctrine whose core principle and practice is non-violence in speech, thought and action.
Pathala revels in propagating HATE SPEECH, indeed he lives by HATE SPEECH! He is a living violation of WHAT THE BUDDHA TAUGHT – RIGHT LIVELIHOOD. Pathala is the worst kind of hypocrite and sycophant and he has wasted billions of public funds by failing to run the Ministry efficiently. The Electricity board is a mess. This guy too cannot speak English properly let along read and understand the technical requirements for energy policy and efficiency, or review of sector development plans. Like the other goons, fools, criminals and leftist geriatrics in mahind rajaapkse’s jambo cabinet of incompetents who have bankrupted and looted the Sri Lankan people is a politician who lives by hate speech, threats and sword waving at minorities and those how are weak. But the true values of a society are evident in how they treat minorities, the poor and disabled.

        Kalyanamitta says:

“Pathala Chamipka who represents the JHU is an insult, as is that organization, to Buddhism”

As he is not a spokesperson for Buddha, Champika cannot be an insult to Buddhism.

The last Buddhist I heard of was Buddha. Was/is there a Buddhist since his attainment of Parinirvana, particularly in Sri Lanka?

        You say:

“a philosophical and political doctrine whose core principle and practice is non-violence in speech, thought and action.”

Your above observation is irrelevant in Sri Lankan context where they practice Sinhala Buddhism.

The Pali term Buddha Sasana “The Universal Buddhist Church” has been redefined by Sinhala Buddhist and elevated to a status where it is afforded constitutional protection in Sri Lanka in case if the true Buddhist hijacked the true teachings of Buddha from the Sinhala/Buddhists.

In fact Buddha renounced his inheritance, the kingdom. The irony is here in Sri Lanka the Kingdom protect Buddhism.

Yes I have been to his house . he lives a very simple life . There is one servant in the house . I do not know how much he pays her neither would you . He has not sent any of his children to Ananda or Nalanda . The fact is that he has only girls . So the writer of this comment must be one of these journalists who propagte lies and fantasies .

Find out how much he pays for “only one servant”. We don´t have any servants in SL in our constitution. Tell us where he sends his daughters without telling us “I don´t know” . To check your credibility tell us where he lives?

Everyone knows the fact this is s silly politician. peace n harmony is a threat to their survival and trying use rascism as a whip to disrupt with the control of few mentally under developed MONKS & mobs. If GOSL has genuine respect toward minor communities in this country it should try to take evey possible action to avert this kind of situation and bring these Mobs to the justice..so far we only see GOSL approve these act.. So Pathetic :(

The guy said ‘One Mullivaikkal is enough’. I agree, in fact, it was one too many! So what is the problem? The guy is asking not to create anymore, and one would think that is the lesson we should all learn from this unfortunate experience.

This statement from the BTF sounds just as warmongering as what they are accusing this guy to be.

Demanding human rights while holding the flag of an organisation that carried out more human rights violations against the Tamil people of Sri Lanka than any other (with no more forces to protect them = LTTE, who abducted innocent Tamil children and killed off moderate Tamil voices)!

Who do they think they are fooling? Its like watching Saddam Hussain kissing babies on TV all over again. When will people like this learn, propaganda based on lies never lead to anything positive. Speak the truth, stand up for the innocent, be genuine, and at the least, they will one day be able to leave this world with their heads held high! Instead, they continue to spin for personal gain, and demand human rights and freedom while at the same time defending one of the most disgusting and inhumane organisations the world has ever seen! These people not only insult the intelligence of the global community, but also take away much needed attention from those truly desperate for human rights and protection, such as most people in Sri lanka, including the Tamils!

Come on you know what Champika Ranawaka meant in his utterances.

      You say:

“Demanding human rights while holding the flag of an organisation that carried out more human rights violations against the Tamil people of Sri Lanka than any other”

This is simply a stupid comment Navin. There has not been any comparative studies conducted in this respect.

Okay, I was perhaps getting carried away. The point I was making was, one who refers to the Tigers as ‘defenders of a people’, when the Tigers in reality did some terrible things to those same people, and many others, is simply being a hypocrite when demanding from the rest of the world that they impose human rights on others.

Human rights need to apply to all. One who cannot see the evil in the Tigers, but can see the evil in the Sri Lankan regime, is a clown, and a hypocrite, and as long as such people continue to be given a voice in society, we will always have people blindly justifying evil on all sides, and making a mockery of what human rights and freedoms truly mean.

Navin, whose creation, or in other words who is responsible for Mullivaikkal? These are the buggers who are responsible, the JHU type. After creating disharmony between ethnic groups, for these low bred scum to climb the social ladder, today they are threatening others once again. As late Ranjan Wijeratne said these buggers have no right to live in decent society.

Gamini, I agree, and apologies for coming across as supporting this guy. I simply picked up on the hypocrisy of the BTF and ran with it. I in no way support the bigotry and ignorance of the Sinhalese ‘elite’. But as long as the Tamil elite continues to justify war crimes of one faction, and demand those of another be punished, I can’t see any real solutions coming out of all this but for the elites of the two sides keep screaming ‘you did it’, ‘no you did it’, ‘no you did it’, ‘no you did it’. Its a joke, and all the while the vulnerable people in Sri Lanka continue to suffer, while these cronies live in absolute luxury.

The truth is, the elite of both sides found the vulnerability and division of the people of Sri Lanka to be an advantage. And to this day they continue to encourage it! Organisations such as the BTF fall into the same category for me, as the various Governments and religious leaderships of SL. I am not taking sides, rather refusing to buy into propaganda with a hidden agenda of either side. Though I understand I may have come across biased to one side in my last post. Which was not my intention.

Navin, the LTTE to the Tamils is like the JVP to the Sinhalese. Both LTTE and the JVP have originated from the same social strata. Although the JVP did not have the support of the entire Sinhala society, the LTTE had the majority Tamil backing due to the indescriminate suffering they had to face at the hands of the Sinhalese as a whole. The majority Tamils did not help the LTTE because they liked them or loved them, but because the LTTE were the only ones who stood up to Sinhalese violence against the Tamils. That is why. The majority Tamils are aware of the atrocities they faced from the very LTTE, when the LTTE decimated the very Tamil intelligetia. Killing the very intelligentia of it’s own kind has been resorted to by both the JVP and the LTTE not because of ethnic division but because they do not want the Intelligentia around considering the impediment they face in capturing political power. Further the forces that help nurture these rebel forces from outside the country also prefer to deal with the mediocre corrupt, which is easy to handle than the honest, intelligent and the educated.

It is for this reason I believe that many of the Tamils do not regret the massacre of around a forty thousand LTTE cadre knowing that they would have been more of a threat to them than some of the Sinhalese chauvinists. This explains why so many Tamils today are willing to sit and work with the very Sinhalese regime accused of War Crime, for a solution, after the massacre of the LTTE.

        • 0
          0

I forgot to mention that the JVP and the LTTE are similar and have had each other’s support right along, although at times they may have resorted to theatrics. As for ironing out all social differences and irregularities that both these radicals promise the society, the country is witness to the manner how the JVP has stood up to it’s promises being religated with political power as to their performance. Similarly had the LTTE succeeded they would not have been that much different to the JVP.

        • 0
          0

Gamini, I am not at all a fan of the JVP or any other terrorist or ‘political’ movement of Sri Lanka. But when one terrorist organisation calls another a terrorist organisation, and demands justice, it is difficult to not question their intentions. No one should demand justice for them, while justifying human right violations against others. That is what allows war and violence to just keep going around and round.

If one wants to stand up and demand human rights and justice, then they should do that with dignity, not hidden agendas. To the Tamil diaspora, that means being just as open and critical of the crimes of the LTTE, as they demand the rest of the world to be of the GoSL. If not, their actions are nothing more than a pathetic little act aimed at continuing to breed ignorance and division. No different to the Taliban or Al Qaeda’s claims to be fighting against those who wrong Muslims!

I cannot justify the war in Sri Lanka for the simple fact that I see more in common between the Sinhala and Tamil cultures, than with international communities we try to side and gang up on the other with. It is like two siblings fighting each other and trying to get help from villagers to beat the other. It is embarrassing and pathetic. Until both sides start to accept their flaws, instead of justifying them by blaming the other, our country will continue to be nothing more than a goldmine for a corrupt few.

All groups, such as the JVP, LTTE and even the Sri Lanka governments, they all have a vested interest in the war. You say the JVP has worked with the LTTE. So has numerous Governments of Sri Lanka before. They are all manipulating the general public, who remain blissfully ignorant and devout to these corrupt, inhumane movements.

There is little one can really do to change all this, but to me, my little contribution is to speak up when either side use lies and propaganda to further their cause. It is the silence, and the lack of an actual challenge, that allow these people to keep society dumbed down and vulnerable enough for them to manipulate as they wish. I just hope one day, more Sinhala and Tamil people living in Sri Lanka will stand up to these corrupt and opportunistic criminals claiming to represent them.

His rhetorics can help nobody who are honestely trying to find solutions for the tamil problems.

Widespread inflammatory political rhetoric and other forms of racism are further damaging to community relations, particularly,at this juncture of the country. Stigamatise already marginalised groups and often result in minorities being treated as scapegoats.

Now their power base is eroding, their new tactics is to copycat Indian style of Hindutva RSS, by promoting racism & communal disharmony to please the Moda Sinhala Buddhist to win votes.

Many Tamils and groups were forced by continous – and sometimes well planned – violence and injsutice imposed on them veered towards thoughts of going their separate way. This has been recognised, sympathised with agreed to by both local and overseas political students. Going by the rhetoric of the Rajapakses many are now settled -post-May 2009 – to a new future with the Sinhalese. In fairness to the Govt they seem to have taken several steps, voluntarily and at the instance of the international community, to bring the Tamils back to the national fold. Inflammatory and irresonpsible calls like this poorly-performing Minister Ranawake only go out to widen the differences – a factor, it may be noted, is in need this kind of dangerous politician feeds on. On his own, he has been a total failure in the running of his ministries and his mendacity
is now a part of our tragic history. A respected former CEB official called him in a newspaper article “a magician or a super accountant” for fudging the pathetic accounts of the CEB to mislead the President, Cabinet and the country it is performing proftiably for the first time
in its history. He has been caught badly with his falsehood and should have been shown the door long ago.

SL Gunasekera, Tilak Karunaratne and others know at close hand his conspiratorial nature to unduly climb up the political latter – because it was over their heads he built his nest. For this former violent JVPer to survive as an effective force he has to up the ante in the Anti-Tamil, anti-Christian and anti-Muslim card. President Rajapakse must take note of this and weed this cancerous element out of government ranks pronto.

    Native Veddah:

The Sinhalese have every right to produce leaders who speak for their commond good. But this should not be at the expense of other communities – Tamils being the major one. We might not agree with Anagarika Dharmapala and what he stood for. But his communal approach to National politics gurgitated extremists like A. E. Gunasinha. R.G. Senanayake was an anti-Tamil hardliner from whom Kobbekaduwa took over on an anti-Thondaman line. KMP Rajaratne from the Uva, believed to be of Tamil origin, came in between. I am, of course, speaking more of Parliamentarians (exluding Dharmapala) The deranged Mathew is a temporary phenomena on a fast-track to Cabinet politics that died as fast as it came. Champika Ranawake and the ilk are the successors to this kind of extreme Sinhala supremacist politics that, sadly, brought forth extremism of a more potent order on the other side. The venom in Ranawake’s lot seems to have exceeded most of the rest. It will only be a twisted mind that will call for “100s of Mullaivaikkals” while examing just one the Rajapakses are knee-deep in trouble with almost the entire global community. I fear unless the Rajapakse Brothers sagaciously control the communalist canine within them, out for blood, they will bite more than they can chew in terms of local and international condemnation. But the hard reality well may be before all that the economic holocaust might consume many in the regime in the months to come. Did you ever hear the Central Bank orally instructing the Banking sector not to trade on the rupee above a certain level while lying to the country the US$/Rs parity will be brought down to less than Rs.130?

Just think it was the USA and they suspected Osama bin laden was hiding there. So, for two decades or so bombed Afghanistan into oblivion. What happened from all these human right activists and from humanists, nothing.

Even with that kind of human rights record from USa, there are how many to priase USA and worship USA ?

I still think the combination of stupidity and racism make people like Cyril, Champika and Weerawamsa suitable candidates and useful idiots to act as buffer between the leader of the country who can’t overtly say things that these idiots can freely express with the consent of the leader.

Mahinda didn’t clip Champika’s ears. That goes to show how the leaders hide behind these useful fools to get across their message/warning to the vulnerable section of the population.

These stupid racists act as human shields when push comes shove.

Racism is a pendulum that swings both ways. If the Tamils want to live in Peace people like Sampanthan should shut up and stop provoking the Sinhelas to go to extremes. The BTF can continue lying about the numbers massacred and their numbers will augment till they have reached the “recorded” six million having people in their midst who can multiply and divide to see more boats allowed to enter the friendly waters of the US, UK France and Australia. The truth is that today there are more Tamils living in the South West than any where else. This Ranawaka and most other peace loving Sinhela people rightly believe is a great security risk. There have been no bombs killing innocents (450,000 according to my estimation so I believe the scores are not level yet and the match goes on) but the sides being really close matched with spin on the one side and defined aggression on the other we could reach the six million on both sides soon. You just need a better leader than Sampanthan and Gnanakoon. Two cowards. Manufacture in a test tube another Prabakaran. After all Gnanakoon can do almost anything except make his political entry here in Sri Lanka. Come on Gnana many people here including you old school mates from Yaalpaanam and Welikada are dying to see you and listen to you. I am that is for sure and I am in Colombo my friend.

Simon Casie Chetty was a great Tamil scholar unrivaled by any of his contemporaries. Is there a remote possibility that this Peter Casie Chetty fellow is a descendant of that scholar and a judge? I don’t think so. What do you think? I always believed Tamils and Sinhalese are evolving into Homo erectus. Now here is the proof.

Please read about Simon Casie Chetty below:

(Simon Casie Chetty was appointed a Tamil Member of the Legislative Council when this office was rendered vacant due to the death of Coomaraswamy Mudaliar. He held this office for seven years and then resigned. On his retirement from the Legislative Council due to heavy expenses he was made the First Ceylonese Civil Servant and also a member of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1845. He proceeded to Chilaw as District Judge which office he held until his death on November 5, 1860 at the age of 53. Before his death he became a Catholic.

Simon Casie Chetty was a prolific writer and author of 12 published monographs and seven manuscripts. The Ceylon Gazetteer was his Magnum Opus – his great work, and it is the one that was displayed together with his portrait in the 75 cents postage stamp released on National Heroes Day of 1989.)

Tamils need not worry about Ranawaka. In fact he gave a perfect gift to the Tamils with this racially provocative and threatening speech, as the Tamils can show this as an example of the Rajapakse cabinet, who need to take collective responsibility from rabid dogs type speech.

Let the rabid dogs bark but the caravan rolls on.

There was no 1983 riots which killed 4,000, and Ranawaka things that Tamils will be shaking when he threatens another Mulliwaikkal, where the government hearded 400,000 Tamils into a NO FIRE ZONE and slaughtered 100,000 of them, mercilessly.

Now see the cost for the Rajapakses and Fonseka, as well as the country. Politically, economically and diplomatically. There is much more to come. Sri Lanka is surviving by the skin of their teeth begging from the IMF 3 Billion dollars, and borrowing 1-2 Billion dollars, issuing bonds and guarantees.

There is little FDI, grants, loans and foreign aid. Tourism is from the diaspora with foreign passports and most of the Hotels are loosing money heavily. Stock market is down 50% in 18 months considering the 30 % devaluation it is much more. Miracle of Asia? My Foot.

Real estate is still down despite the end of the war. The only high demand is in the North and East, and the Sinhalese are flocking to Jaffna to sell their wares, house to house and be domestic tourist.

Remember what happened to the President in NY, and London twice. Well, there is more to come and it is a disgrace for Sri Lanka. But thick skinned guys still don’t get it. GOSL better follow their UNHRC resolution to the T, or else see what happens.

Weerawanse’s, Ranawaka’s Mervyn Silva’s, Kudu Silvas, Vaas G are all jokers in Rajapakse’s deck of cards. All the big talk is at home.

Thank You Ranawaka. Please Go Ahead and make 100 more speeches like this if you have the B………….ls. We know you do not have the brains.
